NYT Reports on Shady Details on OJ2's 'Recruiting' at JustSC

Lee Jenkins of the New York Times (who used to be the UCLA beat writer for the OC Register) has written a profile on the Juice Deuce. Southern Cal is out there to take on UNC in East Rutherford, NJ. The article is factually challenged, but it has some eye opening details on the shady "recruiting" that resulted in the thug Baller's commitment to JustSC.

Apparently some "stranger" came into Floyd's office last summer. He presented himself as some sort of rep. for OJ and dangled the troubled recruit to a desperate coach of a pathetic basketball program:

Mayo was entering his senior season as a point guard at Huntington High School in Huntington, W.Va., but Floyd said he did not bother to call him. He did not even send him a U.S.C. brochure.

What was the point? Major universities had been courting Mayo for four years. Floyd had been at U.S.C. for fewer than 18 months. Besides, Floyd had only recruited two top-100 players in his life. He had no business going after Mayo, the No. 1 player in the country, especially being from a football college that was 3,000 miles away.

"O. J. wanted me to come here today," the man told Floyd. "He wanted me to figure out who you are."

Floyd was desperate enough to play along. His starting point guard, Ryan Francis, had been murdered two months earlier. The backup, Gabe Pruitt, was in academic trouble. The third-stringer, a walk-on, was leaving college. Not only the whole story is shady Jenkins got few key facts wrong. First, Jenkins is totally wrong in reporting that major universities had been recruiting Mayo. None of the elite basketball programs (Duke, UNC, KU, UCLA) had any intention of touching this kid. The only program that was showing any interesting in Mayo last year was Bob Huggins's KSU.

Second, Jenkins goofed on the name of the "stranger" who presented himself as OJ's rep. From "RussSmith" on Bruinzone: Aside from the factual errors, it's Rodney Guillory not Ronald, Mayo was not a senior guard at Huntington Highschool, at the time he was still at North College Hill and trying to get into Oak Hill, it's an interesting story.

I don't know all the NCAA rules but one has to wonder how a guy the NCAA has already determined to be a representative of a sports agent, Rodney Guillory, can contact Tim Floyd on behalf of OJ Mayo, and not be jeopardizing Mayo's eligibility? I would assume it's legal or none of them would be stupid enough to tell a NY Times reporter it's what happened, but it sure does sound odd?

Someone on a USC board said it was Taj Gibson that recruited Mayo, they knew each other from camps or something which didn't sound right to me given Gibson didn't play in most of the big HS camps. But this article says Mayo recruited Davon Jefferson which does make sense since they've been on the same AAU circuit and all star camp scene for years. I wonder if any one in the Trojan Times will ever followup with questions.

Back to the story in NY Times. It gets even weirder: "Let me call him," Floyd said.

The man shook his head again. "O. J. doesn't give out his cell," he said. "He'll call you." Uh yeah. OJ doesn't give out his cell. Yeah that would go over will with credible coaches such as Howland, Williams, and Pitino.

It is just really disgusting to see how Trojies are whoring themselves for this kid. Just one more example of a school and its cultish fanbase having no morals whatsoever for the sake of athletic glory. Guess it's not a surprise. These are the same losers who are willing to be ok with graphics of black babies in handcuffs as a "joke," just so it could coddle the losers from its thug dominated football program.

Go Bruins!

It may be weird or
factually challenged, or any of that sort of thing.  It could be totally fiction.  But tell me -- would you be surprised at all if it were the Gospel truth?

I still say that it's waaaay too soon to tell whether OJ2 will ever see time in a ketchup and mustard uniform.

Considering
Reggie Bush skated away for three hours and Dwayne Jarrett took in thousands of $$ in free rent, I won't be surprised if OJ2 ca$hes in and out of JustSC.

Fox 71
Why do you say that that OJ2 may not end up at USC?

by BruinFan1 on Mar 21, 2007 1:01 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He has all the earmarks
of someone who will get picked some jail time before too long.  If he stays in jail for a year, he'll be old enough to go to the NBA without having to raise the caliber of the kids at justsc for a year.

I may only be half right.  He may get his jail time when he body-checks a ref in his first game.

Ack
leave out the "picked."  (I've said many times I get paid as a writer.  Obviously I don't get paid as an editor of what I write.)

I want OJ as a Toejam!
So he can piss off his teammates, the fans, the coaches, and burn down that sorry excuse of a basketball program. And that's before getting arrested for a carjacking followed by a drive-by.

by tasser10 on Mar 21, 2007 1:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

His presence or absence on justsc's
alleged basketball team will not impact his team's performance except in a negative sense, in my opinion.  I would bet the mortgage on the fact that every ref (certainly every Pac 10 ref) will have watched the ref-bumping incident about a thousand times.  Hence, he enters the season with a Dennis Rodman reputation.

And his ego is so disproportionately inflated (as reflected by his little exhibition at the end of his last game), I am convinced that he'll overreact the first time something goes against him.

But having K Love (whose warts (if any) are invisible) go to the Bruins and this guy go to the trOJans seems to restore a sense of balance to the universe.

(The sad thing is, if he were lucky enough to get coached by Coach Ben, or Coach Knight at Texas Tech, he might grow up and turn into a decent guy.  But we'll never know.  And he'll never know what it's like to be around players who are gentlemen and who have character.  So he'll continue to be a thug and a punk until someone sets him straight.  I doubt if that will be Timmeh.  Timmeh's contribution to his character development will be to make sure he has the phone number of the team bailbondsman and the team spin meisters.)

ROFL
I'm trying to envision a scenario where a HS kid's "representative" tells Coach Howland "don't call us, we'll call you." I just LOL.

There are so many issues with the scenario I don't even know where to start.

If this is all true, Floyd might as well put on some high heels and a bustier and go stand on Sunset Blvd.

Also, how can Jefferson qualify at Southern Cal when he couldn't even get into UNLV?

by Ajax on Mar 21, 2007 1:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ajax, I'm disappointed in you.
"Also, how can Jefferson qualify at Southern Cal when he couldn't even get into UNLV?"

The entrance exam is simple:  Just figure out how to get to Senora Ross's class.  It's an open-book entrance exam and, as an athlete, he's entitled to have someone else take it for him.

Surreal
What is stunning to me is how Floyd just tells the whole story as it was cool. He doesn't even see the red flags or doesn't even seem to care.

And then be brings in Pom Pom to "close the deal."

Just amazing.

I think I saw Timmeh
on Sunset Blvd, but Eddie Murphy got to him first.

Are you sure
it wasn't Hugh Grant?

LOL!
Once again, Ajax brightens my day.

Good point
but Eddie did get busted for picking up a guy in drag.

by Barnes2JJ on Mar 21, 2007 2:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Then it was Eddie for sure!!!
Timmeh in drag should be the new Toejam mascot.

It goes without saying that
no one is surprised by any of this happening at justsc.

What surprises me is that no one ever calls justsc to account for any of the stuff that goes on at that alleged institution.  Not the NCAA, nor the MSM, nor the people with integrity at justsc (I'm making an assumption here, but the odds are that there are some), nor anyone else.

Its like the Mafia
Mayos Agent: "Im going to make you an offer you cant refuse"

SUC and organized crime just seem to fit together. They just need to work on the organization part.

by Tydides on Mar 21, 2007 3:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Good catch
If I recall correctly, Woodward and Bernstein uncovered a bunch of justsc guys (Don Segretti comes to mind) who were known as the "sc Mafia."  They were the dirty tricksters of the campaign.

The justsc Mafia doesn't go away.  It just goes underground.

by Fox 71 on Mar 21, 2007 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good Catch
That is true...

some also refer to the SC film grads of that era by the same name.

Funny how perceptions of a school and its alums are so consistent even in very different areas.

Hahaha
This is the funniest story I've read today.  I can't believe JustSC's NCAA compliance director hasn't gone on a murderous rampage today.

BTW, where are those JustSC morons from yesterday in this thread?

by stevenucla on Mar 21, 2007 3:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Anyone have a list...
of all the justsc infractions/off-field incidents in the last 5 years? i know it dates way back more but im just curious with how much crap they have gotten away with from reggie bush to dwayne jarrett.

Someone mentioned the idea
of having a $C violation/infraction/felony/misdemeanor counter and/or list on the BN Home page, updated daily of course. One for the football team, one for the basketball team. Can't go back too far due to limited space. I think it would be a great idea.

Yes, Menelaus was keeping score
He did say he was going to update it, but Mrs. M is expecting a baby any day now (if she hasn't already had it).  Keep your eyes open next month.

It could be any day now!

I assume she
won't interrupt his basketball watching with anything as mundane as childbirth.  (Just kidding, M.  Just tell her to remember what she learned in her Lamaze classes, and you'll call a cab for her at the next time out.)

So Much To Love About This Kid
His dedication to his studies. Why else would he pick Southern Cal without visiting the campus, knowing who any of the players were, or meeting the coach (except through his agent)? Obviously he selected the school for its International Studies program.

His love for travel -- which has prompted him to play basketball for schools in four different states (and only suspended in three!).

His selflessness -- volunteering to do Coach Tim's recruiting for him, and refusing to give his cell phone number for fear of running up the Southern Cal AD's phone bill.

His clever use of the nickname "O.J." as a metaphor for how he loves slashing to the basket.

Too bad we'll only get to admire this fine young man's character for one year!

by vanaaron on Mar 21, 2007 6:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

His uniform number
in at least one You Tube I've seen is -- dah-dum -- 32.

This guy is so absolutely perfect for justsc.  And justsc seems so absolutely perfect for him.

this is going to turn out good
stating the obvious, Juice Deuce is going to turn out real good for SC.  The lunatics are running the asylum.

NEXT year's tourney
I just cannot wait to see OJ's tantrum next year when his justSUC team loses in the tourney.

You think they'll make the NIT?
Eh, SC is making a rise, but we'll see if it lasts more than 1 or 2 seasons.  I wish I could be a good sport about it, but they keep doing things like their football team.  Win at all costs, nevermind how sleazy.  Though I must say they are taking some of the BH strategy in terms of defense and I at least respect that.  I do hope they lose bad against UNC.

I also like Gibson
Any guy that gets his jaw dislocated and gets back in the game is a warrior in my book.  Kind of like Mata.

Also, I couldn't believe Durant's comment after the game about how he wished he would have tried harder.  There's no doubt SUC wanted it more than UT, and I can respect that.

Anyway, I'm sure Hansbourough (sp?) and co. won't pull a Durant and will take it to the SUCsters.
