Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

The Promised Land

Well boys and girls. Mrs. N and I are heading up to NYC early tomorrow am.

We are taking the train up to Penn Station for a little get away to the Big Apple. Oh yeah we are going to watch AA, DC, Luc, Shipp, Mata and rest of our Ben Ball warriors.

We will be at Professor Thoms' to take in Ben Ball with hundreds of other fellow alums, doing our eight claps, losing our voices, as Howland and his boys continue to drive towards the promised land:

Let's hope the Boss and the Bruins karma continue to roll through San Jose this weekend.

I am sure A, T, M, and rest of the gang will keep this place rocking. If you are watching the tourney tonight enjoy the games.

Consider this our Friday night Madness open thread.

GO BRUINS.

OJ Mayo article
In the spirit that one of the teams in the playing tonight will have this kid next year:
  http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news;_ylt=AjsnN_YGyXX.J9O.jLKx5h85nYcB?slug=aw-east2007ojmayo032307&am p;prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Pretty much puts into perfect words on how to describe this kid.

p.s. Hope you guys have fun watching the games tonight. It's my mom's bday....hopefully they can give her a belated present with a W tomorrow.

What a powerful article
but a total waste of words. sc does not hear this.

What the article doesn't do is quote Mike Garrett who says something like "OJ is the best kid to ever sit in my office. Better than Bush and Leihert (sp?).

I don't doubt that. I really don't.

He's never had a kid like Aaron Afflalo in his office and I doubt he ever will.

Players and parents who value character will not send their kids to sc.

What a game, Roy.
Nothing pleases me more than to see these Trojans crushed the way it happened this evening at the Meadowland arena.  Great job Roy.

These ragtag players thought they belonged in Elite Eight.  Too bad Roy said no way.  If I were the ref, I would call another technical on Floyd when he ventured on the court again after play resumed following the TarHeels' technical shots.

Wait till next year when their Mayo kid start causing problems for them.

My questions to Tim Floyd
  1. Did you need a police escort after you were ejected from a game?
  2. Were you ever pulled over for marijuana possession?
When I read his comments, all I could think about was Ajax's comment about Floyd putting on a bustier, knee high boots, and strutting his stuff on Hollywood Blvd.

Aaron Gray is a puss
Watching the highlights on CBS and reading Pittblather.com posts, its a trip how much of softy this guy is.  The highlights featured the play where Mata drove to the basket and let go /lofted the ball over the rim. Gray, at the basket, just turned saw him, made no attempt to get in the way, but actually stepped back and put his hands up, guarding nobody.

The highlight video has slowed the play where Shipp missed the 3 with the shotclock down to 2, missed, Mata (the Man!) rebounded, quickly passed to Shipp who cut in and scored over Gray, who able a feeble attempt at contesting the shot.

The guy was a big load of soft goo, and I think it was us and him.  I read before that he either rocks in a game or gets dunked on all the time by guys as big as him.  And last night, the Pitt blog was saying that he may have lost millions from his performance last night.

Love how Enberg ends the highlights "Keep Afflalo away from the carnival cause he'd shoot the lights out." Hope that rings true tomorrow for all his shots.

Vaya con dios.

Noah's Elbows
I was hoping we'd run into Florida on the path to #12.

But, Noah has pissed me off and I'll cheer for Butler.

IIRC, Noah took a cheap shot at one of our players last year.

Within minutes of the start of the Butler game, he put an elbow in the face of a Butler player. Donovan took him out and talked with him.

I'm surprised that no one smacks him back.

He better not try that on Mata or Aboya. They could both break him in half.

With less than a minute
an offensive foul was called on Gibson. tim came onto the floor, threw some paper on it and drew a technical. NC made the 2FT's and got the ball back.

He took sc out of the game.

But they lost because the trojans burst -- they totally came apart.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Mar 23, 2007 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

A foul called on a trOJan
which Timmeh doesn't agree with (and it was a fairly obvious foul), so Timmeh walks out on the floor and throws what looked like some tickets at the ref.

There is no way the refs could have looked the other way on that.

So the NC guy hits the two free throws for the technical, and NC gets the ball back.

It was something that no real coach would do.

Rooting for $UC to win, 'cause wouldn't be a MAJOR STFU to the bulk of the Sports steno pool at the networks to have to deal with 3 Pac teams in the elite 8, and one precious big 10 bunch left - hanging in by the shortest of pubes - and no more vaunted ACC left either.  Yeah, I know it was $UC, but still . . . you would need the sports equivalent of Rush O'Hanitwit to spin out of 3/8 of the Elite being Pac-10 schools - let alone 3/4.  Oh well,  go Ducks,  smack Michael Jackson Noah and his buds on Sunday.  And Bruins - get it done tomorrow.

I just couldn't finish the sentence.  I have yet to have my family held hostage, or to have God Almighty tell me that my immortal soul was hanging in the balance, but until those eventualities come to pass, I cannot and will not root for that team no matter what.  Just can't do it.

Amen, brother
My Dad was rooting for $uC too, because of A.) the Pac-10 having 3 and the ACC zero teams in the Elite Eight, and B.) His partner would foot the bill for our tickets to Atlanta if SC made the Final Four, plus C.) He's still bitter about UNC ending our run of 7 straight titles.

All pretty good razones, except for one thing: The 3 letters on the ketchup and mustard jersey's that kept  hurting my eyes. I just kept praying that God would forgive him.... And that UNC would win.

Phew! SC had been a thorn in my side the entire freakin' tourney. Now I can relax and get PUMPED UP FOR KANSAS TOMORROW!! GO BRUINS!! ONE MORE TO THE 4!!

misplaced bitterness
UNC didn't end the titles run - that was NC State.  David Thompson and Rick Burleson and 3 OT periods in '74 . . .
. . . a rematch of a game earlier that season where the Bruins had won . . .
Still, UNC is hate-able because of how frequently the wags pile kudos onto Dean Smith - a fine coach, but (apologies to the late Lloyd Bentsen) he's no John Wooden.

who said anything about "rooting?"
Actually had UNC in the "family" bracket - so it was a "win win."  Still - and in this day and age you filter what you can but if you want to watch and/or pay attention to sports you absorb some measure of the "party line"  which is - unquestionably - that "real" basketball is only played in places other than the West Coast (that's been the line for years from the quasi-Moonie sports press - as if they could repeat it enough times and make the Pauley rafters display disappear).  It would have been immensely entertaining - for a change -  to watch and listen to the talking heads try to spin the blow out of ACC teams and the one staggering, remaining big 10 entry left in the 8, while 3 of those "soft teams" were still playing in the final rounds . . .

I'll be honest
I wasn't all that upset when they were up big, mostly because I was salivating at watching BSPN try and spin this with no ACC teams in the tournament. It would have been great for the comedic value alone, but the Bruin in me will never be upset with watching the trOJans burst under pressure.

What can he say ?!?
When you hired an average collegiate coach with a few years of pathetic NBA records and experience, this is what you get.  I wonder how Mike Garette feel right now.  Quite possibly he is going nuts in his hotel suite looking for his America Worst's plane ticket to get out of town fast.

Floyd's lucky I wasn't the ref.  I would give him a second technical without so much as a blink the second I caught him lingering on the court when play resumed.

Hey coach, next fall when your Mayo boy fouls somebody and you think the ref is wrong, you know what you need to do ?  First you throw a chair all the way up the stand, not across the court.  Then you pound your fist on the table to make sure it collapses.  And if it doesn't make the ref buckle and rescind the call, grab the jersey of any of your player and make an example of him.  That should do it.

Fox 71
I'm not taking to your questioning my Bruin fandom lightly. I have a lot of reasons why I was hoping for USC to make the Elite 8, but I have one main reason:

My fiancee is a Trojan. She told me that she wouldn't get excited about USC basketball until they made the Elite 8. Some of my best memories of us together surround USC and UCLA sports. I have a fantastic time tailgating with her, cracking jokes about how USC is full of criminals and she cracks jokes about UCLA being a basketball school. Our USC and UCLA friends get invovled too. Again, these are just some of the best memories I have.

I was looking forward to watching USC play Georgetown with my fiancee on Sunday. I love to see her happy. I love to see her cheer USC on. She doesn't love USC as much as I love UCLA, but I love her more than anything else. Her enjoyment is priceless to me.

That is the reason why I wanted to see them do well. I wasn't like this until she went to USC. I have to be a good sport about this, especially when we have kids.

What you did has me insanely pissed off. Since I was 17, I wanted to go to UCLA Law. I had little confidence in myself as a high schooler and didn't think I could get into UCLA right off the bat, so I didn't even apply. I worked my ass off at UC Irvine for the one shot at UCLA Law. I wanted to be a Bruin, and that's what I was working for. Thank God I did well at UC Irvine. Now I'm living my dream. Yes, my dream was to be  a Bruin. It may sound silly to some, but probably not anybody here.

You seem to have confused hating Trojans for being a Bruin fan. My love for my Bruins is and always will be independent of USC because I will always know that we are the better school. My name is BruinFan1, not Trojanhater1.

You can disagree with me all you want, but I feel as though my reasoning is perfectly logical.

If you were some guy on the street, I would likely tell you to go fuck yourself. Seeing how I never had any problem with you before, I can withold such a statement. My point is saying this is that your questioning of how much of a fan I am will never go well with me.

As an attorney (I do believe you are), I would appreciate it if you asked me why I don't hate USC as much as others. You just accused me of being a half assed Bruin fan without asking me any facts. Maybe my answer is sufficient for you...maybe it's not. For something like this, I do think anybody here deserves at least an inquiry of, "hey, what's up with that?"

To end this, don't ever question how much of a fan I am EVER AGAIN. EVER.

by BruinFan1 on Mar 23, 2007 10:17 PM PDT reply actions

stfu...
please. Just stfu. Over on Chokers Chronicles (SORRY...CONQUEST) chronicles, you said you rooted for SuC cause you love LA teams.

Now it's your fiancee's fault? Please.

And one more thing...I'd love to see you tell Fox 71 or anyone else on the street to "fuck yourself". Rude little trojan, aren't you. But, of course, Trojans are only good for fucking. (Damn...I make myself laugh sometimes!)

Anyhow, a TRUE Bruin will NEVER root for a trojan...it is as simple as that.

by pocho on Mar 24, 2007 12:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Just want to point out the obvious
but the fact your fiancee said that she wouldn't get excited about JustSC BB unless they made the Elite 8 pretty much sums up the typical JustSC bandwagon fan.

by stevenucla on Mar 24, 2007 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions

I accept that explanation, although I truly do not
understand it.  It's not in my nature to be "in your face."  What I saw made me question your credentials, because some of your pro-sc quotes made mewince just a little to see them signed "BruinFan1".  My own background is such that I have a hard time conceiving of a situation in which I would end up being engaged to an sc person, but my background is obviously not the same as yours.

But with all that, I still question the strength of your UCLA passion.  What happens when the kids get ready to go to college?  Where do you send them, assuming they could get into either school?  And what do you do when your wife puts her foot down and insists that they go to the other school?

Abraham Lincoln paraphrased the Bible when he said "A house divided cannot stand."  There is also something in one of the Pauline letters about being unequally yoked.  Although the admonition from Paul was in terms of marriage between a Christian and a non-Christian, it is not something to be ignored on any significant issue in a marriage.  So what will you do?  If, as I would do, you defer to your wife's wishes, then that's perfectly understandable and commendable.  But then the name doesn't fit.

Look, I wish you well in your law career and with your marriage (which is by FAR more important of the two.)  I applaud your desire to affiliate yourself with UCLA.  I welcome your spirit and your passion for all things Blue and Gold.  But you'll have to pardon me for quibbling about your choice of noms de plume.  Just leave off the "1" and I can handle it.  But the name "BruinFan1" doesn't mesh with what I saw on the trOJan blog.

My kids
Can go where ever they damn well please. I would think they they are smart enough not to go to USC. Its not the best academic place in the world and I do not like the morals there...but I can think of a crap load of other colleges that have crappy morals.

I will raise my children to be good people. Even if they went to UCLA, they would be in countless positions where they will have to use good moral judgment (its fucking college). If they went to USC, I would hope my morals will hold true.

They will be 18. They will be adults. I can accept certain choices as long as they are good people. The world will not end if they went to USC.

If you preceive me as defering to my wife's wishes and then say I can't be BruinFan1 because of it, I think you are the one with messed up priorities. UCLA will NEVER COME BEFORE PEOPLE I LOVE. NEVER. To say that I'm knocked down a notch even though my family dynamics will necessitate such a position is insanity.

Additionally, its a fucking name I came up with. I just threw a number at the end of it. I'm sure I'm not the #1 Bruin fan without even having this conversation. I'm sure there is some guy or girl out there that does 100 x's the things I do for my school and knows 100 x's the facts I know about UCLA.

Oh, and bringing up Bible scripture to make an argument about this...not cool. Don't bring up the Bible to make any type of argument about school alligience. That's just wrong.

I'm going to have to stop now because now I'm really fucking pissed and I'm just going to rant. Fuck. I'd never thought I'd be one of those freaking losers that gets all heated on a stupid blog, but I'm not used to being questioned about how much I love UCLA.

If you really think that I'm a half assed fan, don't fucking respond to my posts and don't fucking read them.

RELAX
Just read through this little back and forth between the two of you.  Relax hotshot...good luck with law school and the marriage...she is a lucky woman, I am sure, and hearing about the hardships that you had to overcome to get to where you are is amazing.  But you can't root for sc...sorry bro.  No need to get all bent out of shape and drop tons of F-bombs...we need you to have positive thoughts for tomorrow.  My name sucks too.

dude...
Fox 71 extended a big ass Olive Branch to you. Don't drop it. Hold it.

I have two wonderful high school kids; one wants to go to UCLA, the other to Notre Dame. God only knows where they will end up...but my Wife and I will have our say. Yes, they will be 18, but we all know 18-year-olds are dumbasses.

Sure, they can do what they want, but it is our responsibility as a parent to assist them, to groom them, to guide them.

Knowing what you say about sc (not the best academics and morals...your own words) will you encourage them to go there?

by pocho on Mar 24, 2007 12:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Clarification
I would never rout for USC against UCLA.

Even without my fiancee, I'm the type of guy that likes to beat USC when their good because it feels better. I bet most guys here will take any win against USC any day. I will too...I just like the victories to also mean something in a bigger scope. Part of me was hoping that USC and UCLA would meet in the finals whereupon we could demolish them and embarrass them on a huge stage (even though that was a million to one shot of happening).

My apologize for the F bomb. I don't usually do that and it usually isn't my nature. It won't happen again. I promise.

by BruinFan1 on Mar 23, 2007 11:31 PM PDT reply actions

you know what...
that scenario, UCLA jacking usc in the finals sounds SO nice. As you apologized, I do as well. Know why? Your logic...

I would LOVE to see the Bruins dominate SuC...but the only way that could happen would be to root for the ToeJams to make the final.

Sorry for the hate...do your best to help your future wife see the light!

by pocho on Mar 24, 2007 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I assume the apology
was universal, so I accept it.  Issue is over about where your sentiments lie as far as I am concerned.  Life is too short for wasting energy on a subject such as this one.

One note having nothing to do with anything but lawyering.  It has been my experience that when a person is trying to write a convincing argument that it is best to leave out profanity (or even loaded words.)  I confess I did that in my initial post and whether called for or not, it was ineffective.  It only made you mad, and did nothing to convince you about anything.

For example - in a brief, it's rarely (I hesitate to say never) a good idea to say something like "Only a complete idiot would agree that Exhibit A is admissible."  If the judge agrees that it's admissible, then you've just called him or her an idiot.  Also, accusations (such as the one I made against you) are generally perceived as so strong as to be somewhat like profanity.  Example:  "Plaintiff's lawyer is lying about X Y Z." More effective, in my opinion, to say "Plaintiff's lawyer is wrong about X Y Z" even if he or she really is lying.

OK, enough law school stuff on game day.

Just a thought which you can take or leave as you choose.

Amen, brother
Actually, it was North Carolina State, with David Thompson, that ended the streak of seven banners.  There are still plenty of other reasons to dislike UNC.

I go to bed and look what you get into.

As best I can tell, it was after 3am your time.

Next time, have a second glass of warm milk and count banners, not sheep.

 Get your sleep.

Us old people will need to be ready to cheer our Bruins on to the next round.

So here you hav it folks from Mark Schlabach
over at ESPN
Jayhawks guard Russell Robinson said the Bruins would be ill-advised to try and play with them in a track meet.
"I hope they do run with us," Robinson said. "I think it would be great. I think it would play to our advantage because I just think we have more guys, our guys are better. I think we just have to defend. If they go up and down, I think it will be great."

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney07/columns/story?id=2810365

Here's hoping that our Bruins will just suffocate the shit out of Kansas.

That's some awful big talk
from someone who has already outed himself as a trOJan, or did you forget how "we" shut down Durant? Pretty funny watching you label Fox as a Nazi when you're the one defending SUC's lack of response regarding the "White Power" incident.

I really don't want to add more fuel to this fire, but that post, and specifically, that insult, was horrendous.

Everyone should be focusing on today's game and SuC's meltdown yesterday.  All of this other stuff is just BS, 100% pure.

Now let's forget everything but the business at hand, and that is called Bruin Basketball.

For what it's worth, I played a quick round of golf today (one of the benefits of retirement), found a ball in the water, retrieved it, and it was a nice Nike that had the word "MOJO" on it.  If that isn't a sign, I don't know what is.
