Around SBN: The 2009-2010 Card Chronicle Big East basketball preview

After the Sunset

Forgive me for not doing any Sunday news roundup today. I am just not in the mood to read any articles in the traditional media. My feelings are somewhat mixed this Sunday. I am disappointed over last night, but incredibly proud of our basketball program.

Obviously, it goes without seeing by objective measure this has been an amazing season. Coach Howland and our boys far exceeded the expectations we laid out before the season. What this team has accomplished in last two seasons which is compiling a 62-12 record, two Final-4 appearances, two Pac-10 regular season championships, and a Pac-10 tourney championship, is nothing short of remarkable, considering where this program was just two years ago. Sure some blowhards (with the IQs of SuC fans) will try to argue that results from last two years are not surprise, given the talent on UCLA roster. But they are simply not taking into account how Coach Howland has done more with less.

However, there are some things from last night's game that are bugging me. Bugging me a lot. Here they are:

  • Referees: Coach Howland and our players too classy to mention it. I will. Those doofuses did affect the game. Something was seriously wrong in a game in which our players were getting called for breathing too hard in first few minutes of the first half, while Noah was getting away with elbowing (and literally slamming Mata out of the way for a put back dunk). Pretty much by the half way point of our first half 3/5 of our starting line up was wiped away with foul trouble. Sure thanks to Shipp we hung in there, and if came out gave a good effort right out of the gates in the second half, we would have had a shot, but it was a shame how the referees decided the complexion of the entire game. The referees should never have than kind of impact at the Final-4 level game. Just because we have to go through that kind of nonsense dealing with amateur, unprofessional, clueless Pac-10 crew during the season, doesn't mean we had to be subjected to that BS in a Final-4 game. Oh well I guess.

  • Effort around the Rim: I mentioned all week how rebounding was going to be one of the three main keys to last night's game. I get Mata and Luc were in foul troubles in first half. Still. Getting out rebounded by a margin of 25-42 left a really foul taste in my mouth. I was deeply disappointed at the effort we showed around the rim. I think we have a group of warriors who were capable of putting forth a much better showing. Not sure what happened there. Did they get intimidated? Did they get psyched out by Noah's clown show or did they get thrown off rhythm by all the shitty calls? Whatever it was I really thought we were going to persevere through the adversity and then come out strong in the second half. Didn't happen and it is still bugging me this Sunday.

  • Classless Gators: I wanted to write this post by congratulating the Gators. They are a special team. And they will have their place carved out in college basketball history (should they win tomorrow night). But man they were bunch of classless a**holes. It was great to see AA be the first one to extend his hand. It was the right thing to do considering he is the guy who currently carries the torch of Wooden's program. We wouldn't have expected anything else. But my stomach is churning picturing Noah and rest of the Gators' freak show through out the night. That makes it very hard to wish them well tomorrow night (Go Bucks I guess) and through rest of their basketball careers. Whatever.
Anyways, I will get over these things. It was just one Final-4. Obviously we are going to back for more. And the way our program is set up under the leadership of Coach Howland, number 12 is just a matter of time.

I hope our boys can ride into the Sunset with their heads held high because they had an awesome season.

And they can look forward to perhaps even more memorable run next season.

We will keep the show going here on. God knows we will have plenty to discuss in the coming days, weeks, and months, which will include AA's future (brain tells me goodbye AA, heart tells me he wants another (title) shot), Love's arrival, spring practice, and the future of our underachieving football coach.

So with that once again congrats to our Ben Ball warriors for giving us a great season.

We are so proud and appreciative for all the wonderful memories from 2006-07.

Thank you AA, DC, Shipp, Luc, Lo, AA2, Roll, Westbrook, Keefe, Wright, and rest of the boys.

Thank you Coach Howland.

We will be back for more.

GO BRUINS.

Apologies for not being around much recently
I haven't really had the chance to see any of the "analysis" from outside sources on this, so these are just a few thoughts that have been fermenting for a while now.

I don't know about all of you, but in my eyes there has been a disturbing trend both times we have gone to the Final Four, and that is the lack of respect we seem to draw from nearly everyone. I'm not saying that everyone should kiss our ass and make us feel good, and I certainly prefer opinion pieces to come strong with the reasons why they believe so-and-so will win, but the attitude out there these past couple of years has been downright dismissive of the Bruins, and that is unacceptable. I say this not because we are UCLA and we have Wooden and Kareem and Walton and any of the other million reasons to be proud of our tradition, but more because I feel that EVERY team that makes the Final Four is worthy of respect. If things changed since Wednesday, then a partial retraction of the above is in order. To be honest, I tuned out the analysis leading up to yesterday when everything they said became a repeat.

That being said, congratulations to Florida. I despised them last year but just didn't find it in me this year to blanket hate the entire team. I found that I don't really dislike Horford, Humphrey, Green, not even Brewer (even though the 31% 3pt shooter went 4-4, the real reason we got screwed yesterday). No, my dislike is directed at the world's ugliest girl, Joakim Noah. I swear "Joakim" is French for unjustified arrogance. Yeah, Noah sure had a great reason to make an ass of himself last night what with all his opportunities coming off of great play by his teammates, with him sitting like a lump right under the basket. Nevermind that Humphrey, Brewer, and Horford carried your overrated ass last night, you were still the one doing the most woofing. Good Job. I hope you bring that attitude to the NBA and get decked by -insert crazy NBA player here-. I hope their fans enjoy it, and that they remember that payback is a bitch. I'm not talking about our failed attempt at revenge, but rather the backlash from other fans after losing all those draft picks and possibly their coach. No one is going to care about their excuses when they're struggling next year, all opposing fans will remember is whether you conducted yourself with class or whether you were a jerk, and the return treatment will likely reflect that. It would be in their best interest to take the high road.

As for our team, Afflalo was a no show. Considering he only played 5 minutes in the first half, I'm not surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. I'm not going to say that we got completely screwed by the refs, because while two of the fouls he was called on were questionable, they have been called at various times over the course of the season. It was said earlier that we were getting called on our hedging action, and that was really where our trouble started. Honestly, I don't see why interior play should be called any looser than on the perimeter. This kind of inconsistency played right into Florida's hands. If it's a foul 20 feet from the basket, it's a foul right under the basket. Does the NCAA want contact or no contact? I wish it would make up its mind and then apply the rule equally across the floor.

Shipp was a bright spot in an otherwise dismal game, and it's good to see that we will be able to count on him next year. Since we are pretty sure almost all of our team will come back, then let's hope for a restful offseason for Luc. If he comes back with the consistent midrange jumpshot, then we've really got something devastating cooking next year. Hopefully Mata continues to develop his post game, and our bench likewise gains the confidence to be more consistent contributors. I have high hopes and expectations for most of our bench.

The fates of Collison, Afflalo, and Love are somewhat tied together. I believe Afflalo needs another year. The accolades are nice, Pac 10 POY and 1st team All American, but his draft stock has taken a huge hit this tournament. I know the ball was taken out of his hands in this last game, but he has the inconsistent label on him, I believe mostly stemming from the lack of interior threat, which means we live and die by the jumpshot which is inherently inconsistent. Collison, I believe will also benefit from the inside presence, as he will not have to have the ball in his hands 2/3rds of the time. These three players will mutually benefit the most from the presence of the others and I believe AA will get the recognition he deserves from scouts by playing with Love.

All in all, a great Final Four season, and I'd like to join Nestor in thanking the team for giving it all they had. I hope to see all of them next year. They do the Bruin Nation proud not just on the court, but off of it as well, just like Wooden.

Lack of respect
Pretty amusing. Check out "HornsFan" comment on SwampBall calling UCLA an "atrocious offensive team." HF should stick to following Texas hoops and figure how can Horns can play hoops that doesn't resemble ugly, AAU basketball.

And of course there is that one Trojan "basketball fan" celebrating in SwampBall. Saying that its amusing is probably being way too nice.

You have love Paragon.....
Just pandering to the Gators, that was amusing.

Tough to lose the game, but back to back Final Fours are pretty good and I look forward to the 2007 - 08 edition of our team.   Having Collison, Shipp, a healthy Luc, Mata, Westbrook (who is going to be an enormous star if coach turns him loose) with Mr. Love, will be insane.

Would love it if AA comes back, but if he does not, we will be fine.   I want to trackback to Paragon when we play SC again next year and see how OJ2 is working out for him.

It is a bit of a sad Sunday, but I am sure any of our compatriots in the PAC 10 would surely trade places right now if we let them.

Go Bruins!!!!! And Nestor please put up two clocks - one for the first football game and one for SC in December.

I agree completely
You cannot justify the calls on the hedge screens, or touches on drives with the no calls inside.

The problem we faced was trying to figure out what we could and could not do. That, and having so many people in foul trouble, forced us into playing a "tweener" D -- somewhere in between our tough D and no D.

This contributed to our lack of offense. We score off our D. We also score off of rebounds. One reason we did not rebound their glass well, in the second half, was that we were in so much foul trouble.

It's not fair to say the offense didn't show up -- our offense starts with our defense and if you tie our hands on defense it will obviously hurt our offense. The hedge screens and traps result in turnovers, and scoring in transition.

And, then there is the shock that sets in when the ref's arbitrarily take away a big part of your game and plan.

It reminds me of of watching great trial lawyers fumble, in important cases, when judges make off the wall rulings -- taking away their trial law, themes, and defenses.

There are very few endeavors that cannot be ruined by a radical and unexpected paradigm shift.

And, that's what we faced all season. Either or defense is legal or it is not. If it is not, we should change it. If it is within the rules, we should be allowed to play it.

The defense we were allowed to play almost all year, and in the tournament -- especially against Indiana, Pitt and Kansas -- was made illegal last night.

We've had that happen in parts of games this year. Stanford is the best example of a sudden paradigm shift.

But, I can't think of a game where the referees redefined the game from the beginning of the game.

It's amazing, that we stayed in the game as long as we did.

And, that we never gave up.

Unfortunately, unlike the court system, there is no appellate court to overrule the decision.

And, since we are not "respected", no one will really care.

But, I think we play beautiful basketball and that the ref's were ugly.

ucla celebrates 4th place
What is the big deal about going to a Final 4? In what other sport do we celebrate 4th place? ucla players and Ben Howland were probably tired from all the interviews they did last week. This is what happens when you talk too much and can't back it up. ucla basketball history is a fraud because they can seem to win anything without Sam Gilbert's money. Now that the season is over ucla fans can do spend their time doing what they do best, being jealous of USC football. I won't even mention the fact that USC has the most titles all time in baseball. Can I get a 8 clap now?

Jealous of USC Football?
That's hilarious...

OJ Simpson.  Reggie Bush's house payments.  Matt Leinhart playing his senior season on 2 units of BALLROOM DANCE.

Oh yeah. 13-9, Bitch.

we're about as happy getting to the Final Four as you were winning the Rose bowl this year. If I remember correctly, it was US that put you there!

SUCkass nation
That's funny, considering we all know that if you were in our position, you idiots would be the first ones proclaiming how the Final Four is some sort of "validation" of SUC basketball. Don't lie, we all know you'd commit double murder, take free rent, rape women, drink underage, assault students, etc just for a SNIFF at a Final Four.

SUC is a fraud, as an academic AND athletic "institution" because they can't win anything without paying off their players, and they can't pass their classes without jokers like Senora Ross handing out SUC degrees that are worth no more than the toilet paper they're printed on.

That's the best thing about being Bruins. We are better than you, and we both know it. Anything negative you try to say about us almost always goes double for you. I won't even mention the fact that UCLA has the most titles all time in EVERYTHING. Can I get a "cheat on" now?

How I love your description of Noah.  I truly believe he wants to be a woman, and if and when he willingly submits " it " to a pair of surgical scissors, he / she will be a lesbian too.

Forgetting one other thing
I found the defensive rotation was not quick enough. Several times when the Gators set a high pick for their guards they were able to get pretty deep penetration. Very uncharacteristic of a Howland team to not have that quick rotation to seal off the lanes. Worse yet, they were drives down the middle where the guard could pass off to either side or take the shot himself.

Noah's a punk. The refs were terrible... I still cannot believe they let Noah throw Mata to the floor for him to do a putback dunk-and-scream. Better see if Brent Bearup or whatever his name is was involved.

Better team - Florida
It seems like we've all accepted the reality that Florida's a better team, a great team even.  It's tough that they're so annoying and classless - what's also tough is 2 straight years we haven't given them our best shot.  We would have had to play flawlessly to beat those guys and we didn't do it ... it'd just be a lot easier to accept the loss knowing we left our best game on the floor.

Regardless, Bruin basketball is back where it belongs in the small handful of elite national programs.  Thanks to Howland and all the guys for making the season another memorable run ... here's to keeping their heads up throughout the offseason and getting after it again next year!

Refs

I was sitting two rows behind the band (and boy do those guys overdo it), and have to say that while the refs blew a few calls, such as Afflalo's third, which took place right in front of us, they didn't do anything to make our offense look so anemic. We could have changed the entire tenor of the game in an important stretch from about 5 minutes to 10 minutes into the game. During that time, our defense shut Florida down good, and Noah and the others looked flustered. We banged them around, made steals, boxed out . . . did everything right. Notice that Florida committed 10 turnovers in the half, to our 1, and Florida was able to launch about 8 fewer shots (if I recall).

But at the other end, we took several bad shots, ran an offense that made no progress for the first 20 seconds of the possession, and blew one chance after another to develop a 5-7 point lead. I noticed that Brewer wasn't covering Afflalo at first. He had a guy three inches shorter than him, but we never ran an offensive set to capitalize before Afflalo went out. Shipp was lightning hot, so why didn't we let him isolate the way Oregon did with Brooks, who burned Humphries again and again last week? Collison was entirely ineffective, and our offensive rebounding didn't exist. Luc had one of the worst games I've ever seen him play, and he looked defeated and despairing most of the game.

So, yeah, the refs made three or four bad calls, but that was a small part of the problem.

by markb on Apr 1, 2007 11:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you about our offense
Everyone was missing shots except Shipp.  Westbrook missed a little turnaround fader, Aboya misses a one handed hook, Keefe goes 1-1 on the game and that was a dunk, Roll I think made one three pointer, etc.  That was frustrating to see.  Even Luc was right under the basket on that drive and traveled.  I know this team can score because we hung 90+ on teams during the season.  I'm wondering if they get tired out during practice on coach's grueling defense and don't dedicate enough to offense; either that or they were just not aggressive enough last night.  Hopefully Love will bring in another threat next year because our centers and forwards need it.

by bruin95 on Apr 1, 2007 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree 100%
sure there were some pretty bad calls that went against you, but in no way, shape or form can you blame the loss on the refs. whenever you blame it on the refs, no matter how bad it is, you are just saying that your team cant overcome adversity.

just like you guys simply outplayed us last saturday, florida simply outplayed you yesterday and you just have to suck it up a live with it bruins fans. it happens sometimes, i will say that the majority of you are realizing that it was more than the refs that lost you the game, namely no low post presence (something im sure love will change next year)

Rock Chalk Talk, the second happiest place on Earth!

Strangely
I am completely at peace this morning.  We had some breaks go against us and against a team that stocked with talent and size and athleticism, it was just too much to overcome.  I was very, very proud of how hard AA and company fought in the last 10 minutes to somehow scratch back in it.

What we have accomplished in the last two seasons, particularly where we were at just two seasons earlier, is nothing short of staggering.  We just ran into a team that will likely be looked upon as one of the very best of the post-Wooden era both seasons.  There is absolutely nothing to be disappointed in.

I am already very excited for next season.  I know it's post-game emotion, but AA sure sounded in his interview like he is leaning heavily toward returning.  I am at peace with whatever he does, and so grateful for the role he has played the last three years in restoring the UCLA basketball program to it's place at the very top.

GO BRUINS!  I am a proud Bruin this morning.

Disappointed but not heartbroken
Did a news fast last night and then prepped myself before reading the Sunday Sports section.

Proud of my Bruins - great season and many accomplishments that should not be forgotten in the wake of this loss.

But really, Florida was the better team and executed better throughout the game.

3 things:

  1. We didn't box out in the 2nd half (esp. Mata), instead we chased the cutter to the lane and left the key wide open for second chance shots / dunks by Richard and others. If you taped and still want to watch it (if you have the stomach), watch Mata's positioning on many of Richards buckets. That was his standard response to drives to the lane throughout the tourney, but against a team like Florida with 2 or 3 athletic big men to clean up around the rim or can pass, your opening yourself up to easy scores by the other team.
  2. Double team in the post strategy, which is our bread and butter defense and carried us so far, is vulnerable to teams that have athletic big men that can pass quickly out of 2x teams AND perimeter players that can shoot the ball well - like Florida. No way after last year that logically Humphrey should've been wide open as he was to knock down those 4 3's. We knew this, but he was still left wide open by our 2x teaming post strategy. Not coincidentaly Brewer and Humphrey were a combined 8 for 13 from 3 for 24 points. Tough to force a team to play an entirely different defensive strategy all year to change it for one game - essentially our defensive identity but we got unglued by the early fouls and it left us prey to this.
  3. Balanced attack: Florida has it, we don't. Outside of our guard trio (I include Shipp since in here since he plays like a big guard) we have no frontcourt offensive production. Luc isn't the same player this year as last, for whatever reason, so teams can play tight on our perimeter players give them no space and make them take tough jump shots. Mata and Aboya are not scoring threats in our greatest fantasies. When you take AA out of the game, and then Collison and Roll are being played tight on the perimeter because our frontcourt doesn't score, we are an easy team to defend. Shipp made tough shots, but he can't carry the team by himself against a team like Florida. Also,  really liked what I saw from Keefe in the game.
I dislike the Gators for their arrogance and classless-ness, and Noah will be so-so to marginal player in the NBA in my opinion, but they outplayed us thoroughly and deserved to win. I also hate to agree with the MSM, since they are usually wrong and don't analyze but cheerlead (hello Seth Davis?), but they were right on this one.

One last comment on AA:

AA should talk to Brandon Roy about what do to use his senior season to get himself NBA-ready and complete his game. And most importantly become a guard that create his own shot from anywhere on the floor. He has that potential but has some ways to go to reach it. Roy coincidentally will be NBA ROTY over much more hyped players like Morrison etc. Why? Because his fundamentals are very good and he is a complete player not just a scorer. Averaging 16 pts, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds and only 2 fouls a game as a guard in his rookie season. Very solid.

AA has the desire/work ethic and the athleticism, he needs to go from good to great by improving his decision-making with the ball, (good but could be better), his defense to great, and quicken his release on his shot. I hope he comes back to work on those three IMHO.

He will have more space on the perimeter with the development of Love as a low-post scorer (finally for UCLA!!!!) too.

Future is looking bright fellow Bruins - no need to hang your head after this one. We are in good shape, Howland will re-orient the team next year with greater offensive capabilities that Love brings and the development of Keefe and the other others.

BoowhooingBruins
Face it boys...Howland just can't win the big one.  C'mon, "it was the refs"..."we did not play our best game"..."we don't have a low post scorer"...and on and on.  When Howland was at Pitt he could not win the big one becuase "he could not get top flight players there"...Well now his in LA at a BB dynasty...and he still comes up short in the big game.  The problem with his "system" is that it does not just rely on great defense to win games, it also relies on the other team to miss a lot of the open looks they get (see Pitt, Kansas).  Once he gets deep enough into the tournament that he is facing teams that just don't miss the gimmies, it's all over (see Florida, twice).  Maybe Donavan has a coaching clinic that Howland can attend...or maybe he can just go drown his sorrows in a case of Gatorade!!!

by BoowhooingBruins on Apr 1, 2007 11:51 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If I may say something
Howland has done an incredible job with the talent he has now.  Nobody on the team right now is going to the NBA for sure except Arron Afflalo and Howland has made back to back Final Fours.  And another thing, once you start thinking about a big game as "the big one," you're not going to win.  Howland prepares the same for every game and another 30 win season is fine by me.  Florida was just too good.  The refs did take our biggest scorer out of the game early with 3 fouls and he never got back into the swing of it.  THAT was a factor.

To be expected
Anonymous trolls will come from other boards where their teams have been dispatched much earlier on in the tournament, if they made it at all.  If they had any balls at all, they'd at least use their typical screen name and back it up with some sort of factual evidence.
BH may not be perfect, but who is?  I'll take him over anybody (except Wooden of course), especially the litterbug across town.
Don't even waste anymore time on trash like this.  It's probably the Roach or one of his defenders trying to exact some small, meaningless measure of revenge.

Hey Troll...
Welcome to Bruins Nation.  Though you will probably end up being banned, I hope not.  I would love to see you stay here so we can pound on your ass...something I am sure you are used to.

(Though I suspect you are a one-comment bomb-dropper and will probably never be heard from again.)

I suspect from your crappy grammar and poor spelling that you might be a Trojan grad.

As far as Howland not being able to win the "big one"...he's had TWO tries here and has lost both times to a team that might go down in NCAA history as a dynasty (well, not a REAL dynasty like Wooden's teams, but as close to one as can be had nowadays).  Ben Howland has taken a program that had been "Lavinized" and brought it back to greatness.

Anyway...I appreciate your moronic analysis.  It gives us some insight as to the qualifications CBS Sportsline considers in hiring their writers.

Just want to add
I am so proud of UCLA, yeah we lost but it happens in life. I love what this program has accomplished in the last 2 years and we are finally getting the best recruits in the country to come here. Every shortly we will win number 12 and then the dynasty can begin.

There is nothing to be ashamed of with Howland and the boys. I would love to have AA back, but if he decides to leave I can understand why. He exemplified UCLA basketball, and I wish him the best, on whatever decision that he makes.

We will definitely be the favorites to win it next year because of our defense and Mr. Love. Florida will lose most of their players and Billy might actually leave. Ohio State will lose Oden, and Kansas is going to lose a couple of their key  players.

The future looks very bright for UCLA Basketball for many years!

To BoowhooingBruins
You are an absolute moron. Howland took a underachieved team to the National Championship. And this year he takes the same team minus 3 players to the final 4, but no he can't win big games boy you are correct, genius.

If Florida wins the title again this year ( I hope not, because I hate FLorida) UCLA's only loses in the tournament in the last 2 years will be to the National Champions.

And what are you talking about recruiting he is finally getting the best recruits in the country starting next year.

Get your facts straight before you make stupid assertions or you sound like a stupid Trojan!

BooWhooingBruins
I never said UCLA was not a great team or that Howland was not a great coach...I said that he can't win the Big Game (the one Donovan won last year, and will likely win again this year).  If I was a UCLA fan, I would celebrate the Pitt and Kansas wins too, but I would not be foolish enough to think that two more teams in this tournament were going to miss all of those open shots.  When you double and triple the middle, the outside shots will be open.  Florida did not miss and did not miss most of the layups they shot (again see Pitt and Kansas).  One other thing, yet another similar chant to Howland's days at Pitt "Look what he has done with the talent he does have".  I sure the UCLA players who read this blog love to hear about how good they are not from their own fans!

Oh good...
You haven't been banned yet.

So you base your brilliant analysis on TWO games that we lost...both to Florida.

We lost three seniors and got back to the Final 4.  Florida lost NOBODY.

As far as the "outside shot being open"...well...duh!  If we didn't double-team, their big players would have just shot over us.  Plus, the double-teaming forced Florida into 10 1st half turnovers.

Howland had to pick his poison.  Florida started three players as tall or taller as our tallest player.  Corey Brewer...a 31% 3-point shooter...was on fire.  If Brewer has a normal (for him) game, this game goes down to the wire.

So, what school did you graduate from?  Just curious.  I'd like to find out which institution produces such brainiacs as yourself.

Identify yourself, Troll.  Do you have the guts?

Donovan
Wasn't Donovan at Florida for 10 years before he won a championship? And didn't he go down in two Final Fours (one championship game, one semifinal) before winning the big one?

So Howland has matched Donovan in 4 years instead of 10. What's your point?

AA will come back..
guys like him aren't mercenaries, he really cares and believe me, no way he wants to go out like this. His draft stock has dropped, and so there isn't anything to lose, and probably a lot to gain, by coming back. With an inside presence like Love, combined with him, Collison and Shipp, AA will defineteley have a chance to work on his game, and get some good looks on the court. I know he was an All American and all of that, but at this point, it's better for him if he does come back. I agree with the Brandon Roy comment, AA has similar ability and really has to do the same thing. I remember reading an article about Ben Rothlisberger (sp)after the Steelers AFC title game loss to the Patriots in '04, his rookie season, and how in the offseason he hung out with guys like Joe Montanna and John Elway, and got their thoughts on his game and how to get better. And he combined that with working hard on his passing in the offseason. And the next year, the Steelers came back and won it.

So AA wil be back I feel. If he isn't, we still owe him a lot of gratitude. But AA won't go out like this. He'll be back.

And Noah....
is highly overrated. Brewer, IMO may be the best player overall on that team at this point. Noah's draft stock dropped, he's an NBA starter but nothing that special. I don't say this just because I hate the guy. In all honesty, I hated Patrick Ewing as a player but never begruded his talent. A lot of people hate T.O. but no one says he's not a capable player. But Noah isn't bringing THAT much to the table at this point.

by sbizzy57 on Apr 1, 2007 12:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He only brings
that girlie man style to NBA.  I hope folks don't puke on him.

Noah the Prick
In all honesty, Girlie Man Noah, at times, can look awesome.  At other times, he completely disappears.

For a long while, I thought he was a lock for the NBA.  He certainly will get drafted and his intensity and primal chest beating might impress some people, but I'm not so sure he will be so great at the next level.

If you don't produce in the NBA, and produce quickly, you'll ride the pine.  If he disappears for long stretches at a time in the NBA, his Pimp Daddy father will get the opportunity to  watch his pigtailed son play live on some nothing team in France.

Noah the Nothing
Just finished throwing up after watching Florida repeat.

I was pleased to see Noah completely outplayed and dominated by Oden. And Noah's bizarre "push" shot from the corner of the foul line was one of the ugliest shots I have ever seen.

This guy is nothing.  I wonder how much chest thumping he will do in the NBA.  Not much, is my guess.

Corey Brewer
Here is my brief analysis of yesterday's game.

Props to Corey Brewer.  He was our toughest matchup yesterday and he was the difference-maker.  We could account for Humphrey...and did early in the game.  But when Brewer started sticking 3's, I knew we were in trouble.

I told you it would be brief.  But I just had a large coffee and now I have to go take a "BoowhooingBruins".

by bbuclabruins on Apr 1, 2007 12:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Brewer
Was the difference yesterday. A 6'9" small forward with that kind of speed and length? Too bad we don't have anyone coming to UCLA that fits that bill..

Oh wait, we do??. Nice. :-)

Congrats to Howland and the Bruins for a great season and we're all already looking forward to a great 2007-08.

Classy
Brewer seemed to be one of the few classy guys on Florida too.  He shook AA's hand and gave him his props after fouling out.

agreed
the only guys i like on that team are him and horford. noah, well we all know how annoying noah is and humphrey and green arent much better. horford is very quiet and doesnt play dirty and brewer has class. billy d didnt influence them i guess.

Really?
I didn't see Humphrey or Green do anything to irritate me (except for Humphrey hitting 3's). Of course, Green was getting his ass handed to him, so he really had no reason to be woofing. Then again, Noah was too, but he mouths off for no reason at all. I don't know, I guess watching the game the only one I saw who blatantly lacked class was Noah, so I'll pile my hate onto him.

by Tydides on Apr 1, 2007 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brewer is awesome
there was an article about his somewhere that I read that showed he comes from a humble background and his father's health is deteriorating. He could have jumped last year and helped his father and family out, but they insisted he stay for another year.  Corey Brewer is an outstanding talent and I have been saying for a long while he is the key to beating their team, at least against us.  He proved it last night and he proved he has class too.  He will be good in the NBA in the 3 spot.

BooWhooingBruins
Nope, it's not going to make a difference in the Big Game.  Howland did not double and triple the middle out of a sense of desperation.  It is his "system", period.  If Florida had players of the exact height and size as UCLA, Ben would run the same system because it is simple, and most the time, effective.  Simply put, he wants to force as many shots from the outside, and as far outside, as possible becuase they are lower percentage shots than those taken from the inside.  The Howland "system" killer is the hot shooting guards.  It takes two of them to beat his system.  Most teams are lucky to have one.  Once, the defense is forced further out toward the perimiter to defend the guards, then the middle opens up more....and then Ben is chasing his tail!

Moron Troll...
Read three of your posts and I am still trying to figure out...

What is your point?

Only a simple mind like yours can think that Howland's defensive schemes are "simple".  In fact, they are among the most complex in basketball.

By your Trojanesque mind, a more complex defensive scheme would have been to stay in a man to man with no switching or rotating.  Similar to what you might find at any playground pick-up game.

"Take who got you!  I got the dude in the red shirt..."

Still won't identify yourself, huh?

Better officiating needed
The refs fundamentally altered both semifinal games with their calls. The big guys for OSU and Georgetown each played only half the game. And crippling our top scorer with a ticky-tack third foul? Inexcusable.

Florida really might have won anyway. They have so many ways to win. But we should have seen two teams playing at their best, not one team crippled. We should have much better officiating for big games like this.

by Chandler on Apr 1, 2007 2:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Is Collison Gone?
I hope not, but there is a real possibility that we lose AA, Collison and even Luc.  That would really suck.

On the other hand, I believe each can definitely improve his draft status by staying.  Next year's draft class will not be as deep as this draft is supposed to be.  If we keep all 3, we will be very close to #12.

ONE MORE YEAR, ONE MORE YEAR!

GROW UP FOLKS!
When Barry Goldwater got his ass handed to him by Lyndon Johnson in 1964, on the morning after the election, he delivered the following statement to his followers, "Grow up conservatives."

Hey, we got beat by Florida. Is it the end of the world? I don't think so.

When Goldwater gave his message to his folks, his advice was that conservatives should stop the gripping and go back to work. They did, and they built a movement and got Ronald Reagan elected. Whether you or I like it, they dominated American politics as a result.

The message is that we got to the final four which is a tremendous achievement, and even a greater achievement when you do it twice in a row. But, to get to the promised land -- a championship -- we need to learn something from the experience.

Is Ben Howland a great coach? Hell yes. Is he perfect? I don't so. Are there areas where improvement is necessary? Absolutely. Howland is a defensive genius, but as great as he is on defense, our offensive performance for most of this year has been a lacking.

We have consistently had problems establishishing a lead in the first half of games against teams that we should have had no trouble beating. The reason has been that in a half-court situation, we have relied too much on Afflalo, and we have been unable to penetrate to the basket. Further, our 3-point shooting has been inconsistent. We have also squandered leads and have failed to finish off teams that we had already beaten.

Are there things we can do to rectify the situation, even with our current personnel. Again, the answer is, yes. Shipp demonstrated that he can be a significant offensive threat. Mbah a Moute and Aboya are still works in progress. Mata is also a work in progress and a player who is underestimated for his potential. His defensive skills are fantastic. Look at the job he did on Noah and the frustration that Noah suffered playing against Mata.  On offense, Mata has actually shown the ability at time to drive to the basket, and if he can develop greater confidence moving to the basket, his production could improve.

All-in-all, this has been somewhat of a frustrating year. We were so close, but  so far away from a championship. If we can learn from the experience, our basketball program will definitely go in the right direction.

PS Is all the SC-UCLA-Florida trash talk necessary? It seems like a waste of time to me. For me, there are enough legitimate issues to discuss about UCLA basketball without acting like children and calling folks names.

Defending our turf...
SCDAD...

You will notice that any trash talk today was begun by Trolls.

While I am willing to give credit to Florida for a well-deserved victory, if anyone (including you) comes in here to fling their garbage and try to kick us when we are down, I will fight back.

Now go back to the SC website and lecture them about giving scholarships to rapists (Mark Sanchez) and thugs (Rey Maualuga).  Then maybe go to Florida's website and give them a lecture about how to win with class, like this:

Every comment in response to Trojies/trolls in last 24 hours have come after these scumbags have been leaving drive by flame posts. And for scdad to come here and lecture us on trash talking in our house is just ridiculous and frankly an insult to everyone else in this community who doesn't see through his ketchup and mustard color glasses.

would want to make this a place where trOJan stupidity goes unchecked? A trOJan, that's who.

Yeah, it sure is "diplomatic" of scdad to call a ceasefire on the trash talk. Since his trOJan buddies are the ones instigating it, then I can only assume that he's doing all he can to prevent THEM from stirring things up. If he isn't, then quite frankly, scdad is full of shit.

Well said
We are grownups here, but that Noah guy deserves all the bashings he can ever get before those NBA crowds eat him alive, bones included.

That said, I agree with your insightful, apt remarks.  UCLA won't go wrong with Howland.  He coaches well with what he has, and to a player, they gave it all.  With the national exposure generated by UCLA's consecutive Final Four appearances, star recruits will come.  Kevin Love and Chace Stanback are only leading the pack.

And finally, my fellow bruin, cut me some slack.  I just can't resist the urge to do it.  Remember Kermit Washington smashed Rudy Tomjanovish's face ? I'm afraid that pony tail of this girlie man might, even in his first NBA game, get on the nerves of some Ron Artest prototype when they both try to rebound and what the hell, all he gets is some sting hair in his face.  So, pop ! There goes
the Noah cheek bones, shreds of bloody facial tissues all over the floor.

No, I don't wish it on him but if he keeps up with that kind of girlie acts..........

We will be back!!!!!
AA may go, he may not.....everyone else comes back.   We lost to Florida twice, not too much shame in that as they are an excellent team  (I may not personally like a couple members of the team and Lee Humphrey's haircut, but that is my problem)   I loved the effort we got all season and even though we did not win #12, it was a very positive season.

To all the "haters" out there, ponder this for a minute:   Everyone but AA comes back (and its not 100% he goes)...Luc's knees heal from some time off, Love and Stanbach join the party, and Collison and Westbrook get that much better from running with the pros all summer.....Do you (rest of PAC 10) really think you have a chance next year?????   Please, everything that has been accomplished over the past 2 seasons was done without a legitimate scorer in the middle...no disrespect intended to Hollins, AA2, and Lorenzo, but they are not scoring machines.   If Love is 60% as good as advertised and based on seeing him in person twice, he will be a lot closer to 100% as good, you have NO shot at us unless a meteor hits Pauley during practice.

Arizona, WAZZU, Washington, Stanford.....you have no shot at the conference, deal with it now.
