After the Sunset
Forgive me for not doing any Sunday news roundup today. I am just not in the mood to read any articles in the traditional media. My feelings are somewhat mixed this Sunday. I am disappointed over last night, but incredibly proud of our basketball program.
Obviously, it goes without seeing by objective measure this has been an amazing season. Coach Howland and our boys far exceeded the expectations we laid out before the season. What this team has accomplished in last two seasons which is compiling a 62-12 record, two Final-4 appearances, two Pac-10 regular season championships, and a Pac-10 tourney championship, is nothing short of remarkable, considering where this program was just two years ago. Sure some blowhards (with the IQs of SuC fans) will try to argue that results from last two years are not surprise, given the talent on UCLA roster. But they are simply not taking into account how Coach Howland has done more with less.
However, there are some things from last night's game that are bugging me. Bugging me a lot. Here they are:
- Referees: Coach Howland and our players too classy to mention it. I will. Those doofuses did affect the game. Something was seriously wrong in a game in which our players were getting called for breathing too hard in first few minutes of the first half, while Noah was getting away with elbowing (and literally slamming Mata out of the way for a put back dunk). Pretty much by the half way point of our first half 3/5 of our starting line up was wiped away with foul trouble. Sure thanks to Shipp we hung in there, and if came out gave a good effort right out of the gates in the second half, we would have had a shot, but it was a shame how the referees decided the complexion of the entire game. The referees should never have than kind of impact at the Final-4 level game. Just because we have to go through that kind of nonsense dealing with amateur, unprofessional, clueless Pac-10 crew during the season, doesn't mean we had to be subjected to that BS in a Final-4 game. Oh well I guess.
- Effort around the Rim: I mentioned all week how rebounding was going to be one of the three main keys to last night's game. I get Mata and Luc were in foul troubles in first half. Still. Getting out rebounded by a margin of 25-42 left a really foul taste in my mouth. I was deeply disappointed at the effort we showed around the rim. I think we have a group of warriors who were capable of putting forth a much better showing. Not sure what happened there. Did they get intimidated? Did they get psyched out by Noah's clown show or did they get thrown off rhythm by all the shitty calls? Whatever it was I really thought we were going to persevere through the adversity and then come out strong in the second half. Didn't happen and it is still bugging me this Sunday.
- Classless Gators: I wanted to write this post by congratulating the Gators. They are a special team. And they will have their place carved out in college basketball history (should they win tomorrow night). But man they were bunch of classless a**holes. It was great to see AA be the first one to extend his hand. It was the right thing to do considering he is the guy who currently carries the torch of Wooden's program. We wouldn't have expected anything else. But my stomach is churning picturing Noah and rest of the Gators' freak show through out the night. That makes it very hard to wish them well tomorrow night (Go Bucks I guess) and through rest of their basketball careers. Whatever.
I hope our boys can ride into the Sunset with their heads held high because they had an awesome season.

And they can look forward to perhaps even more memorable run next season.
We will keep the show going here on. God knows we will have plenty to discuss in the coming days, weeks, and months, which will include AA's future (brain tells me goodbye AA, heart tells me he wants another (title) shot), Love's arrival, spring practice, and the future of our underachieving football coach.
So with that once again congrats to our Ben Ball warriors for giving us a great season.
We are so proud and appreciative for all the wonderful memories from 2006-07.
Thank you AA, DC, Shipp, Luc, Lo, AA2, Roll, Westbrook, Keefe, Wright, and rest of the boys.
Thank you Coach Howland.
We will be back for more.
GO BRUINS.

Apologies for not being around much recently
I don't know about all of you, but in my eyes there has been a disturbing trend both times we have gone to the Final Four, and that is the lack of respect we seem to draw from nearly everyone. I'm not saying that everyone should kiss our ass and make us feel good, and I certainly prefer opinion pieces to come strong with the reasons why they believe so-and-so will win, but the attitude out there these past couple of years has been downright dismissive of the Bruins, and that is unacceptable. I say this not because we are UCLA and we have Wooden and Kareem and Walton and any of the other million reasons to be proud of our tradition, but more because I feel that EVERY team that makes the Final Four is worthy of respect. If things changed since Wednesday, then a partial retraction of the above is in order. To be honest, I tuned out the analysis leading up to yesterday when everything they said became a repeat.
That being said, congratulations to Florida. I despised them last year but just didn't find it in me this year to blanket hate the entire team. I found that I don't really dislike Horford, Humphrey, Green, not even Brewer (even though the 31% 3pt shooter went 4-4, the real reason we got screwed yesterday). No, my dislike is directed at the world's ugliest girl, Joakim Noah. I swear "Joakim" is French for unjustified arrogance. Yeah, Noah sure had a great reason to make an ass of himself last night what with all his opportunities coming off of great play by his teammates, with him sitting like a lump right under the basket. Nevermind that Humphrey, Brewer, and Horford carried your overrated ass last night, you were still the one doing the most woofing. Good Job. I hope you bring that attitude to the NBA and get decked by -insert crazy NBA player here-. I hope their fans enjoy it, and that they remember that payback is a bitch. I'm not talking about our failed attempt at revenge, but rather the backlash from other fans after losing all those draft picks and possibly their coach. No one is going to care about their excuses when they're struggling next year, all opposing fans will remember is whether you conducted yourself with class or whether you were a jerk, and the return treatment will likely reflect that. It would be in their best interest to take the high road.
As for our team, Afflalo was a no show. Considering he only played 5 minutes in the first half, I'm not surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. I'm not going to say that we got completely screwed by the refs, because while two of the fouls he was called on were questionable, they have been called at various times over the course of the season. It was said earlier that we were getting called on our hedging action, and that was really where our trouble started. Honestly, I don't see why interior play should be called any looser than on the perimeter. This kind of inconsistency played right into Florida's hands. If it's a foul 20 feet from the basket, it's a foul right under the basket. Does the NCAA want contact or no contact? I wish it would make up its mind and then apply the rule equally across the floor.
Shipp was a bright spot in an otherwise dismal game, and it's good to see that we will be able to count on him next year. Since we are pretty sure almost all of our team will come back, then let's hope for a restful offseason for Luc. If he comes back with the consistent midrange jumpshot, then we've really got something devastating cooking next year. Hopefully Mata continues to develop his post game, and our bench likewise gains the confidence to be more consistent contributors. I have high hopes and expectations for most of our bench.
The fates of Collison, Afflalo, and Love are somewhat tied together. I believe Afflalo needs another year. The accolades are nice, Pac 10 POY and 1st team All American, but his draft stock has taken a huge hit this tournament. I know the ball was taken out of his hands in this last game, but he has the inconsistent label on him, I believe mostly stemming from the lack of interior threat, which means we live and die by the jumpshot which is inherently inconsistent. Collison, I believe will also benefit from the inside presence, as he will not have to have the ball in his hands 2/3rds of the time. These three players will mutually benefit the most from the presence of the others and I believe AA will get the recognition he deserves from scouts by playing with Love.
All in all, a great Final Four season, and I'd like to join Nestor in thanking the team for giving it all they had. I hope to see all of them next year. They do the Bruin Nation proud not just on the court, but off of it as well, just like Wooden.

You have love Paragon.....
Tough to lose the game, but back to back Final Fours are pretty good and I look forward to the 2007 - 08 edition of our team. Having Collison, Shipp, a healthy Luc, Mata, Westbrook (who is going to be an enormous star if coach turns him loose) with Mr. Love, will be insane.
Would love it if AA comes back, but if he does not, we will be fine. I want to trackback to Paragon when we play SC again next year and see how OJ2 is working out for him.
It is a bit of a sad Sunday, but I am sure any of our compatriots in the PAC 10 would surely trade places right now if we let them.
Go Bruins!!!!! And Nestor please put up two clocks - one for the first football game and one for SC in December.

I agree completely
The problem we faced was trying to figure out what we could and could not do. That, and having so many people in foul trouble, forced us into playing a "tweener" D -- somewhere in between our tough D and no D.
This contributed to our lack of offense. We score off our D. We also score off of rebounds. One reason we did not rebound their glass well, in the second half, was that we were in so much foul trouble.
It's not fair to say the offense didn't show up -- our offense starts with our defense and if you tie our hands on defense it will obviously hurt our offense. The hedge screens and traps result in turnovers, and scoring in transition.
And, then there is the shock that sets in when the ref's arbitrarily take away a big part of your game and plan.
It reminds me of of watching great trial lawyers fumble, in important cases, when judges make off the wall rulings -- taking away their trial law, themes, and defenses.
There are very few endeavors that cannot be ruined by a radical and unexpected paradigm shift.
And, that's what we faced all season. Either or defense is legal or it is not. If it is not, we should change it. If it is within the rules, we should be allowed to play it.
The defense we were allowed to play almost all year, and in the tournament -- especially against Indiana, Pitt and Kansas -- was made illegal last night.
We've had that happen in parts of games this year. Stanford is the best example of a sudden paradigm shift.
But, I can't think of a game where the referees redefined the game from the beginning of the game.
It's amazing, that we stayed in the game as long as we did.
And, that we never gave up.
Unfortunately, unlike the court system, there is no appellate court to overrule the decision.
And, since we are not "respected", no one will really care.
But, I think we play beautiful basketball and that the ref's were ugly.

SUC is a fraud, as an academic AND athletic "institution" because they can't win anything without paying off their players, and they can't pass their classes without jokers like Senora Ross handing out SUC degrees that are worth no more than the toilet paper they're printed on.
That's the best thing about being Bruins. We are better than you, and we both know it. Anything negative you try to say about us almost always goes double for you. I won't even mention the fact that UCLA has the most titles all time in EVERYTHING. Can I get a "cheat on" now?

Regardless, Bruin basketball is back where it belongs in the small handful of elite national programs. Thanks to Howland and all the guys for making the season another memorable run ... here's to keeping their heads up throughout the offseason and getting after it again next year!

Refs
I was sitting two rows behind the band (and boy do those guys overdo it), and have to say that while the refs blew a few calls, such as Afflalo's third, which took place right in front of us, they didn't do anything to make our offense look so anemic. We could have changed the entire tenor of the game in an important stretch from about 5 minutes to 10 minutes into the game. During that time, our defense shut Florida down good, and Noah and the others looked flustered. We banged them around, made steals, boxed out . . . did everything right. Notice that Florida committed 10 turnovers in the half, to our 1, and Florida was able to launch about 8 fewer shots (if I recall).
But at the other end, we took several bad shots, ran an offense that made no progress for the first 20 seconds of the possession, and blew one chance after another to develop a 5-7 point lead. I noticed that Brewer wasn't covering Afflalo at first. He had a guy three inches shorter than him, but we never ran an offensive set to capitalize before Afflalo went out. Shipp was lightning hot, so why didn't we let him isolate the way Oregon did with Brooks, who burned Humphries again and again last week? Collison was entirely ineffective, and our offensive rebounding didn't exist. Luc had one of the worst games I've ever seen him play, and he looked defeated and despairing most of the game.
So, yeah, the refs made three or four bad calls, but that was a small part of the problem.

Strangely
What we have accomplished in the last two seasons, particularly where we were at just two seasons earlier, is nothing short of staggering. We just ran into a team that will likely be looked upon as one of the very best of the post-Wooden era both seasons. There is absolutely nothing to be disappointed in.
I am already very excited for next season. I know it's post-game emotion, but AA sure sounded in his interview like he is leaning heavily toward returning. I am at peace with whatever he does, and so grateful for the role he has played the last three years in restoring the UCLA basketball program to it's place at the very top.
GO BRUINS! I am a proud Bruin this morning.

Disappointed but not heartbroken
Proud of my Bruins - great season and many accomplishments that should not be forgotten in the wake of this loss.
But really, Florida was the better team and executed better throughout the game.
3 things:
- We didn't box out in the 2nd half (esp. Mata), instead we chased the cutter to the lane and left the key wide open for second chance shots / dunks by Richard and others. If you taped and still want to watch it (if you have the stomach), watch Mata's positioning on many of Richards buckets. That was his standard response to drives to the lane throughout the tourney, but against a team like Florida with 2 or 3 athletic big men to clean up around the rim or can pass, your opening yourself up to easy scores by the other team.
- Double team in the post strategy, which is our bread and butter defense and carried us so far, is vulnerable to teams that have athletic big men that can pass quickly out of 2x teams AND perimeter players that can shoot the ball well - like Florida. No way after last year that logically Humphrey should've been wide open as he was to knock down those 4 3's. We knew this, but he was still left wide open by our 2x teaming post strategy. Not coincidentaly Brewer and Humphrey were a combined 8 for 13 from 3 for 24 points. Tough to force a team to play an entirely different defensive strategy all year to change it for one game - essentially our defensive identity but we got unglued by the early fouls and it left us prey to this.
- Balanced attack: Florida has it, we don't. Outside of our guard trio (I include Shipp since in here since he plays like a big guard) we have no frontcourt offensive production. Luc isn't the same player this year as last, for whatever reason, so teams can play tight on our perimeter players give them no space and make them take tough jump shots. Mata and Aboya are not scoring threats in our greatest fantasies. When you take AA out of the game, and then Collison and Roll are being played tight on the perimeter because our frontcourt doesn't score, we are an easy team to defend. Shipp made tough shots, but he can't carry the team by himself against a team like Florida. Also, really liked what I saw from Keefe in the game.
One last comment on AA:
AA should talk to Brandon Roy about what do to use his senior season to get himself NBA-ready and complete his game. And most importantly become a guard that create his own shot from anywhere on the floor. He has that potential but has some ways to go to reach it. Roy coincidentally will be NBA ROTY over much more hyped players like Morrison etc. Why? Because his fundamentals are very good and he is a complete player not just a scorer. Averaging 16 pts, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds and only 2 fouls a game as a guard in his rookie season. Very solid.
AA has the desire/work ethic and the athleticism, he needs to go from good to great by improving his decision-making with the ball, (good but could be better), his defense to great, and quicken his release on his shot. I hope he comes back to work on those three IMHO.
He will have more space on the perimeter with the development of Love as a low-post scorer (finally for UCLA!!!!) too.
Future is looking bright fellow Bruins - no need to hang your head after this one. We are in good shape, Howland will re-orient the team next year with greater offensive capabilities that Love brings and the development of Keefe and the other others.

I suspect from your crappy grammar and poor spelling that you might be a Trojan grad.
As far as Howland not being able to win the "big one"...he's had TWO tries here and has lost both times to a team that might go down in NCAA history as a dynasty (well, not a REAL dynasty like Wooden's teams, but as close to one as can be had nowadays). Ben Howland has taken a program that had been "Lavinized" and brought it back to greatness.
Anyway...I appreciate your moronic analysis. It gives us some insight as to the qualifications CBS Sportsline considers in hiring their writers.

There is nothing to be ashamed of with Howland and the boys. I would love to have AA back, but if he decides to leave I can understand why. He exemplified UCLA basketball, and I wish him the best, on whatever decision that he makes.
We will definitely be the favorites to win it next year because of our defense and Mr. Love. Florida will lose most of their players and Billy might actually leave. Ohio State will lose Oden, and Kansas is going to lose a couple of their key players.

Oh good...
So you base your brilliant analysis on TWO games that we lost...both to Florida.
We lost three seniors and got back to the Final 4. Florida lost NOBODY.
As far as the "outside shot being open"...well...duh! If we didn't double-team, their big players would have just shot over us. Plus, the double-teaming forced Florida into 10 1st half turnovers.
Howland had to pick his poison. Florida started three players as tall or taller as our tallest player. Corey Brewer...a 31% 3-point shooter...was on fire. If Brewer has a normal (for him) game, this game goes down to the wire.
So, what school did you graduate from? Just curious. I'd like to find out which institution produces such brainiacs as yourself.

For a long while, I thought he was a lock for the NBA. He certainly will get drafted and his intensity and primal chest beating might impress some people, but I'm not so sure he will be so great at the next level.
If you don't produce in the NBA, and produce quickly, you'll ride the pine. If he disappears for long stretches at a time in the NBA, his Pimp Daddy father will get the opportunity to watch his pigtailed son play live on some nothing team in France.

Only a simple mind like yours can think that Howland's defensive schemes are "simple". In fact, they are among the most complex in basketball.
By your Trojanesque mind, a more complex defensive scheme would have been to stay in a man to man with no switching or rotating. Similar to what you might find at any playground pick-up game.

GROW UP FOLKS!
Hey, we got beat by Florida. Is it the end of the world? I don't think so.
When Goldwater gave his message to his folks, his advice was that conservatives should stop the gripping and go back to work. They did, and they built a movement and got Ronald Reagan elected. Whether you or I like it, they dominated American politics as a result.
The message is that we got to the final four which is a tremendous achievement, and even a greater achievement when you do it twice in a row. But, to get to the promised land -- a championship -- we need to learn something from the experience.
Is Ben Howland a great coach? Hell yes. Is he perfect? I don't so. Are there areas where improvement is necessary? Absolutely. Howland is a defensive genius, but as great as he is on defense, our offensive performance for most of this year has been a lacking.
We have consistently had problems establishishing a lead in the first half of games against teams that we should have had no trouble beating. The reason has been that in a half-court situation, we have relied too much on Afflalo, and we have been unable to penetrate to the basket. Further, our 3-point shooting has been inconsistent. We have also squandered leads and have failed to finish off teams that we had already beaten.
Are there things we can do to rectify the situation, even with our current personnel. Again, the answer is, yes. Shipp demonstrated that he can be a significant offensive threat. Mbah a Moute and Aboya are still works in progress. Mata is also a work in progress and a player who is underestimated for his potential. His defensive skills are fantastic. Look at the job he did on Noah and the frustration that Noah suffered playing against Mata. On offense, Mata has actually shown the ability at time to drive to the basket, and if he can develop greater confidence moving to the basket, his production could improve.
All-in-all, this has been somewhat of a frustrating year. We were so close, but so far away from a championship. If we can learn from the experience, our basketball program will definitely go in the right direction.
PS Is all the SC-UCLA-Florida trash talk necessary? It seems like a waste of time to me. For me, there are enough legitimate issues to discuss about UCLA basketball without acting like children and calling folks names.

Defending our turf...
You will notice that any trash talk today was begun by Trolls.
While I am willing to give credit to Florida for a well-deserved victory, if anyone (including you) comes in here to fling their garbage and try to kick us when we are down, I will fight back.
Now go back to the SC website and lecture them about giving scholarships to rapists (Mark Sanchez) and thugs (Rey Maualuga). Then maybe go to Florida's website and give them a lecture about how to win with class, like this:

What kind of person
Yeah, it sure is "diplomatic" of scdad to call a ceasefire on the trash talk. Since his trOJan buddies are the ones instigating it, then I can only assume that he's doing all he can to prevent THEM from stirring things up. If he isn't, then quite frankly, scdad is full of shit.

Well said
That said, I agree with your insightful, apt remarks. UCLA won't go wrong with Howland. He coaches well with what he has, and to a player, they gave it all. With the national exposure generated by UCLA's consecutive Final Four appearances, star recruits will come. Kevin Love and Chace Stanback are only leading the pack.
And finally, my fellow bruin, cut me some slack. I just can't resist the urge to do it. Remember Kermit Washington smashed Rudy Tomjanovish's face ? I'm afraid that pony tail of this girlie man might, even in his first NBA game, get on the nerves of some Ron Artest prototype when they both try to rebound and what the hell, all he gets is some sting hair in his face. So, pop ! There goes
the Noah cheek bones, shreds of bloody facial tissues all over the floor.
No, I don't wish it on him but if he keeps up with that kind of girlie acts..........

We will be back!!!!!
To all the "haters" out there, ponder this for a minute: Everyone but AA comes back (and its not 100% he goes)...Luc's knees heal from some time off, Love and Stanbach join the party, and Collison and Westbrook get that much better from running with the pros all summer.....Do you (rest of PAC 10) really think you have a chance next year????? Please, everything that has been accomplished over the past 2 seasons was done without a legitimate scorer in the middle...no disrespect intended to Hollins, AA2, and Lorenzo, but they are not scoring machines. If Love is 60% as good as advertised and based on seeing him in person twice, he will be a lot closer to 100% as good, you have NO shot at us unless a meteor hits Pauley during practice.
Arizona, WAZZU, Washington, Stanford.....you have no shot at the conference, deal with it now.
