Spring Football Is Here ...
Time to start thinking about our football program again. Spring practice kicks off tomorrow afternoon. If you are interested in attending here are details of practice schedule posted on the official site:
UCLA will host a Fan Appreciation Day, with players and coaches signing autographs and posing for photographs on Saturday, April 7. Practice will conclude on Friday evening, April 27, with a final scrimmage.
Following is the schedule (tentative and subject to change):
Week One - April 5 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 6 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 7 (11:00 am-1:00 pm).
Week Two - April 9 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 10 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 12 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 14 (10:00 am-Noon).
Week Three - April 16 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 17 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 19 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 21 (1:00-3:00 pm).
Week Four - April 24 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 26 (4:00 - 6:00 pm), April 27 (7:00 pm scrimmage).
The story of this camp is going to be the faceoff between Cowan and Olson. I have certain thoughts on that duel which I will post later this week or early next week.
Meanwhile, the other story line (at least here on BN which will probably filter into the traditional media sooner or later) is the incredible pressure building on Karl Dorrell to win the Pac-10 in his fifth season at Westwood.
We weren’t paying much attention during the Madness. However, bluestreet flagged something really startling in a writeup Sportsline.com’s resident a**hole Dennis Dodd. In that write up Dodd laid out his pre-season top-25 in which he penciled in the Bruins at number 9. Now there are other folks who are picking UCLA to be a top-10 team next season. But what was really interesting from Dodd’s writeup is that it was Marc Dellins, the Sports Information Director from Morgan, who is expecting UCLA to win not just the Pac-10 this season, but beat Southern Cal by at least 20 points (emphasis mine throughout):
You knew that, and you didn't know that. Final Four? Sure. The Spring Top 25? Let's just say I am making Marc Dellins' day. Dellins is the UCLA Minister of Propaganda -- they call him the sports info director in Westwood -- who was quick to point out that his Bruins have 20 returning starters from a team that beat Southern California.
This is an issue because the Bruins got, uh, well, somehow left out of my first 2007 Top 25 in January. Being the good MOP that he is, Mr. Dellins quickly shipped me the galleys of the spring guide. He apologized in advance for the typos (the bound version is coming). I didn't notice any except the bold prediction on Page 3 about beating USC. Again. By 20. To win the Pac-10. Now that's a good MOP.
It also set the table for what should be an exciting and successful 2007 season.
Coach Dorrell and his staff will welcome back a wealth of experience as the nucleus of this year's team. The starting contingent includes 10 players on each side of the ball who started the majority of games at their positions. In addition, there are several other players on both offense and defense with extensive starting experience. A total of 24 scholarship seniors populate the 2007 roster.
"Last season, we made tremendous strides defensively and we are going to build on that unit's success. The competition for playing time at several positions promises to be intense and the returning starters are going to have to continue to perform to hold off the younger players in the program.
"Offensively, we have made some changes that I feel will help us maximize our offensive potential. We are looking forward to taking a long look at both the veterans and the newcomers during Spring Practice and building a very productive unit.
"We have quality experience at virtually every position on both sides of the ball, but our younger players will also be given the chance to earn playing time. I expect this will be the most competitive Spring Practice during my tenure and it should raise the level of everyone's game."
Well now that hoops season is over as soon as practice starts we will keep an eye on all the stories coming out in next two weeks. I don’t think it is going to be very difficult for us to lay out over next few months, why Dorrell should either win the Pac-10 or leave (or be fired) Westwood at the end of this upcoming season.
We are not going to be patient and from reading the tea leaves at Morgan Center, it looks like UCLA officials themselves may not be in the mood to be all that patient with an underachieving coach either. Good news all around.
GO BRUINS.

no excuses
Wow!
Frankly, I am embarrassed that this sort of non-speak is emanating from the head of the football program. His ability to speak is on a par with his ability to coach.
KD would be perfect
No substance whatsoever
Leaving his lack of coaching abilities aside for a second, why can't KD (who appears to be intelligent) just come out and speak words with some "meat on the bone," so to speak? Has the man ever said anything, as coach, of any substance? Anything?
And I am STILL waiting for him to declare that loss to SuC two years ago a complete, humiliating embarrassment, which it was. I want to hear him say that we were completely outplayed and totally outcoached and it will never happen again as long as he is coach. If I had to buy a ticket and sit through that horror of a game (all the while suffering the obscene, verbal abuse from the SuC fans), the least he can do is to take some responsibility for that mess. As you can tell, I am still emotionally scarred from that debacle.
Please KD. Say something real. If you can't coach, at least speak to us like a non-politician.

all cliches
No, the problem I have is the lack of emotion. Bash Floyd all you want after the paperthrowing incident, but he was furious about his team getting screwed by the refs. I wouldn't mind seeing Dorrell get similarly furious during a game! I want to see him pissed and happy and everything else. Basically, like he got a stake in the action.
There's something to be said for calm and collected, but it's worth noting that his finest hour has been the one game where he clearly was involved (the huddle, etc.).
Fair enough
I guess if KD could coach, I would not care about the cliches. However, I can't take a guy who can't coach and just blathers on with the robot-speak. Also, if I hear him say, "we are improving" one more time, I might just lose it.

with one exception...
The time is now
I don't get
I've never understood this. By the time spring practice wraps up, you're essentially giving yourself two months, tops, to make personnel decisions prior to fall practice.
I'll be more interested (honestly) in the battle for receiver spots in spring practice than the quarterback position. Tailback is also a big question mark, I think. Our running game was, by most accounts, pretty awful last year.
IMO, if Dorrell had any offensive ingenuity and Cowan and Olson both played near each other, I'd consider utilizing a two-QB package. I'd consider using Olson on deep packages and bring Cowan in for dump-offs and QB options. Obviously, you'd have to mix up the packages occasionally (have Pat through deep on occasion), but the fact is, Cowan has no deep ball.
If we hope to effectively compete in the Pac-10 next year, we'll have to stretch the field with a vertical passing game, and, let's face it, Cowan doesn't have the natural ability to do that. The only way Cowan can effectively stretch defenses is with his running ability and that largely succeeded in the USC game because no one was expecting it - it's not like Cowan is blazing fast. 'SC just had no QB spy package that was working effectively.
However, I have no faith whatsoever that Dorrell could effectively manage a two-QB situation. So, natch.
It's Because of the Quarter System
final product?
Ultimately, I just don't have faith in our coaching to get the job done. We have sufficent returning talent to contest for the Pac-10 title; we have sufficent talent returning to make a serious run at a BCS bowl; we have sufficent talent returning to possibly be undefeated going into the USC game. We do not have great talent, but we have good talent, especially on defense; we do not have talent on both sides of the ball as good as USC. I think we have solid reasons to believe that we can win the Pac-10 title.
But with Dorrell as coach, we can be fairly sure that somewhere along the line, UCLA will stumble against a demonstrably inferior opponent, and I am not all optimistic when we play USC at the Coliseum. I don't think Dorrell is a terrible coach; instead, he is simply a mediocre coach who cannot maximize lesser talent or capitalize on having outstanding talent. I hope that UCLA wins the Pac-10, beats USC and plays for a national title, but realistically, I see us at best as a Holiday Bowl participant at perhaps 9-3 or 10-2.
SWAGGER IS GREAT, BUT ...
"But what was really interesting from Dodd's writeup is that it was Marc Dellins, the Sports Information Director from Morgan, who is expecting UCLA to win not just the Pac-10 this season, but beat Southern Cal by at least 20 points ..."
I'd be happy if Dellins said that we are confident that we will beat SC again, but to start with an opening bid of 20?

TrOJan lover
Of course, we don't have the benefit of having players who receive free rent, free houses, limos while being recruited, and taking cake-walk Spanish classes, to name a few. Is that what you're referring to, SCDAD? UCLA is at a disadvantage because they PLAY BY THE RULES? Shocking, I know.
And please, please, please stop using the word WE when referring to the Bruins. You are not one of US. Stay on the Dark side, because we all know that's where your heart lies.

Really?
Thirty years from now I guarantee my Bruin allegiance and my hatred to $C will be as strong as it is now. You are lost and conflicted. Too bad. You have your own free will and you chose the Dark side. You are not one of US, SCDAD!

Yeah, whatever $C Dad
SPENDING 160K FOR A TROJAN DEGREE!!!
Not what I'd call a real wise investment, $C Dad!
Even if your son or daughter got a full ride, still wouldn't chalk that up as a smart move.

On second thought
My opinion of justsc is such that I could never look myself in the mirror again if I sent my child (or even my worst enemy's child) to that place. Yours is obviously different. Our minds will never meet on this issue, ever.
So you know what? I won't bother asking any more, and you don't have to bother explaining. Your conscience allows you to live with your decision. So good luck to you and to your son. I hope there are no negative repercussions from this decision.

that is funny
How does Cheat Carroll
"LOS ANGELES - The would-be agents who provided the house, the money for the tricked-out car, the luxury hotel rooms and the tens of thousands in cash used to roll right into the Southern California locker room after the game, right past security, to meet and greet the triumphant Trojans.
The marketing agent who provided the cash allowance, the plane flights, the limo rides and the designer suits used to hang around Trojan practices, filed paperwork with the athletic department and walked the sidelines of the Los Angeles Coliseum like he was Pete Carroll himself.
It is no surprise that Reggie Bush and his family cashed in on his future earnings during his Heisman Trophy career at USC, as so many allege. Finding eager agents willing to pay for an edge on representing him was easy; they were all over the place at the loose ship known as Trojan Football.
At practice. At games. In the locker room. At the football program's Heritage Hall. Even with permission of the athletic department's compliance office."
Okay, so the NCAA looks the other way when a "high profile" program pays its players and breaks the rules because it's "good for college football" as a whole when schools like U$C and Notre Dame and Texas are winning. We have to live with that. But when a bunch of unpaid players go up against all that flash and cash and STILL win 13-9, it makes a victory that much sweeter.
A couple months ago a $UC-wad fan called a sports radio show and asked why UCLA still talks about that game, and why don't we just move on because it's over. It was right after the pounding we gave them in basketball when we rang the bell at halftime, shouted "13 to 9", etc.
Maybe it's to remind everyone that money doesn't ALWAYS buy victories.
Good Luck Coach Dorrell!
At the risk of hijacking the thread more...
We all love to mess around and engage in hyperbole and ranting and raving on this blog. That's sort of what it's for.
But saying that he's not really one of us, or questioning his loyalty, or hijacking any thread he shows up in to blast his moniker or where his kids ultimately went to school?
WHO FREAKING CARES?
He comes on this Board, he participates, he chimes in, he's respectful, even if he doesn't agree 100% with every nuance of every cheer and thread in here.
He may not always be as rabid in hating our opponents, and he may not take every loss in as debilitating a fashion as we do, but who freaking cares.
Saying he doesn't belong? Saying he's a traitor? A little good-natured ribiing is one thing, but for about 2 weeks, I've seen repeated personal shots at him anytime he tries to make a point that may be somewhat impartial.
GIVE IT A FREAKING REST.
MIM
I wouldnt be surprised
Ill give him all the crap I want for the stupid things hes already done (referring to SUC as "we" and making excuses for racism), but I dont find it necessary to attack his family. I can certainly understand others irritation however when he attempts to deflect attention away from every SUC scandal that is posted. As far as being a traitor, one could certainly make the case that he has already revealed himself as one, so its not like the accusations are off base.
MIM
But to be honest sometimes this SCDad comes across as lecturers ala Joe Lieberman. And I am not a big fan of folks who always get in the mode of lecturing at the expense of our own side while letting off our rivals.
SCDad needs to grapple with the fact that BN is an unapologetic partisan Bruin blog. We are not going to have it any other way. If he is looking for a place where he can say nice things about his son's school and not get called out for it, he needs to find another community.
Sorry to sound so harsh. But we didn't build this place so we can hear good things about Southern Cal while putting down UCLA (notwithstanding our issues with Dorrell).

Disagree
So, yes, I care about name calling. And, I care about disrupting discussions about the Bruins.
Of course, I agree to the extent that I believe that the stuff about his family and other personal stuff has no place here (or anywhere).
Maybe I'm just crumpy after having been up all night with a newborn, but that's how I feel.
I second these comments
I don't care for the personal attacks, either, because it detracts from all the good stuff on this site, but that incident was memorable, in a bad way.
A Newborn!
Thanks
Too bad you missed Bennifer
I missed that
Not to worry
Now to the business at hand, which is one addition to the BN (Bennifer) and one deletion (Coach Dorrell).
Really...
There is nothing different out of Morgan and no more heat on Dorrell. How is "We expect to win the pac 10" from last year, complete with bracelets, any different from what is being said now?
I'm ready to hear something different after our 4th loss this year.
