Expectations for 2007-08: Karl Dorrell's "Show Me" Season

Before heading into Dorrell’s 4th season last spring we laid down our marker last year on what we expected from the Bruin head football coach: 9 wins and a victory over Southern Cal. Dorrell came short on getting his 9 wins and eeked out an expected home win (from the pov of BN) over a Trojan squad with vanilla offense.

It's time for us to lay down our marker again. As we head into Dorrell’s 5th season, I think there is a general consensus on what we expect from the head coach who has year after year fallen short of the expectations he set for himself when he was hired in Westwood. Again here was KD on the day he was introduced as the head coach for UCLA football program:

''My expectation for next year is to win the Pac-10 championship,'' Dorrell said. ''Winning the Pac-10 and beating our crosstown rival are the biggest things on my mind.''
After four years Dorrell still hasn't been able to put together that season in which UCLA wins the Pac-10 and beats Southern Cal. However, I do believe he is boxed into such a corner at this point that this season decidedly will emerge as the "show me" season for Karl Dorrell, that will decide his ultimate fate in Westwood.

Morgan Center has already sent out clear cut signals laying down the expectations that they are expecting a football season in which UCLA will win the Pac-10 and beat Southern Cal (by 20 points) in that last game of the season. And this comment from DG (after winning number 100) is consistent with that signal sent out earlier this spring:
Guerrero says when one of his coaches wins a title, it motivates the others. "There's always a buzz in this department," he says. "And the expectations here are very, very high. We expect to win national championships."
Obviously we expect DG to hold KD to same standards he holds our other magnificent athletic programs.

Given KD’s pathetic track record as an abysmal, detached (07 Southern Cal game stands out as an aberration), passive leader of course many think he will ultimately stumble this season (just like he has in previous four). But that is not going to prevent us from laying down our expectations. 2007-08 will be KD's "Show Me" season:

We expect (again we are not predicting, expecting) UCLA to win 11 games, beat Southern Cal, and win the Pac-10 this upcoming season based on the facts that Dorrell has had five years to build his program, he has enough talent at his disposal to make a run, and he has a favorable home schedule which puts UCLA in perfect position to capture its first Pac-10 football championship since 1998.

Here is how we expect (not predict) the storylines to play out this coming season, which is going to be Dorrell’s "show me" season:
at Stanford (w): Last time Karl Dorrel's team went up to Palo Alto, it needed a miracle performance from 2LIVEDrew to pull put a lucky OT win. Stanford of course is a pathetic program. The best player from it's 1-11 team - QB Trent Edwards - is gone. While Jim Harbaugh is an intriguing head coach and may improve the play of fifth year QB T.C. Ostrander, even a close game against this bunch of losers will spell trouble for Dorrell's program. Make no mistake about it. If Dorrell wants to make an emphatic statement that this is going to be his years, Bruins should pull out a methodical win by a comfortable margin (we are looking a win by at least 2 TDs).

BYU (w): BYU has a nice football program. But it has no business winning against UCLA at the Rose Bowl. Considering UCLA footballs teams tossed around BYU football teams even during their halcyon days with Ty Detmer, this game should serve as nice little season opener for Karl Dorrell’s football program which is talking openly about winning a Pac-10 championship and demanding respect. BYU’s head Bronco Mendenhal has a done a nice job in Provo resurrecting some pride in a program which used routinely dominate its non BCS conference, but they should face a huge uphill battle at the Rose Bowl as they will be working with a brand new QB (Max Hall, a transfer from ASU) to replace John Beck. Again this shouldn’t be a much of a game. I am sure Dorrell and his apologists will be talking about what a challenge Cougars are going to be, but anything less than an impressive win should be a troubling sign for a program which is coming into this season with the expectation of winning a Pac-10 championship.

at Utah (w): This should be a really interesting game to watch. Utah has one of those interesting college offenses which DeWayne Walker’s much hyped defense had a lot of problem defending last season. Utes are going to be hungry for revenge and I am sure will be playing with a lot of gusto. But again if Walker’s defense wants to make a statement demonstrating their worthy of all the incredible hype they have been getting this off season, this is a game they should dominate, by shutting down a non BCS opponent which had to scrape and claw to win 8 games last season.

Washington (w): Last year’s game against the Huskies one of those classic exhibits of Dorrell’s mediocre and lackluster head coaching. Bruins looked weak, tentative, and clueless down the stretch as they coughed up a lead with that classic playing not to lose Dorrelian mentality against a pathetic Husky team. Well this time the Huskies will be at the Rose Bowl with a brand new quarterback. And this time if Bruins find a way to choke like they did in Seattle, DeWayne Walker and his colleagues in the coaching staff will not be able to get away by playing a pathetic blame game. We will expect another Bruin win running their record to 4-0.

at Oregon State (w): This game right now is set up a classic trap game with the week before you know who. Bruins have an unfortunate tradition of choking in games like this one. Of course I am talking about Washington State (88), Arizona State (94), and then there was Miami on December 5, 1998. Mike Riley is a less inspiring leader than Karl Dorrell. He couldn’t beat Karl last year with Matt Moore. I don’t see how Karl’s team can choke in this game with the opportunity to go 5-0 heading into the rematch against the Irish. We expect the Bruins to go 5-0.

Notre Dame (w): If not for Dorrell’s worthless playing-not-to lose mentality (do you sense a theme here?) Bruins would have closed out a program making win last year in South Bend. This time there will be no Quinn to Shark connection. Sure there will probably be some 30,000 Irish fans at the Rose Bowl but we expect nothing less than a TOTAL DOMINATION by a UCLA football program, which again is heading into 2007 with 20 returning starters, experienced pair of QBs (who by this time should well versed in Dorrell’s playbook, whatever that is), and some 70,000 UCLA fans who will be charged up. This is a game Dorrell will have to win. If he doesn’t it could turn out to be one of the final death nails in his waiting coffin. Again we expect nothing short of a DOMINATING Bruin win running their record to 6-0.

Cal (w): Yes Tedford is a very good football coach who has put together a nice program up in Bay Area good enough to build a tradition around Holiday Bowl runs. But he has no business winning this game. He in fact has never won at the Rose Bowl (0-2 against a coach like Dorrell) and we expect that trend to continue without Marshawn Lynch. Of course this will be one of those "show me" games Walker in which he will have to prove he can scheme up defenses that can stop college teams not playing predictable pro-set offenses. We will expect the Bruins to run up their record to 7-0.

at Wazzu (l): Okay we are practical enough to know a Dorrell team is not capable of going undefeated. Surely it will have to choke somewhere as the pressure of going undefeated will catch up to them as their head coach will shrivel up start busting out his dynamic run, run, pass offense. This is the game which we expect Bruins will stumble … and stumble badly. Pullman has never been kind to Bruins. Last time they were up there they pulled out a miracle win on the backs of 2LIVEDrew. This time they are going to fall short dashing their hopes of BCS, falling to 7-1.

at Arizona (w): As the Bruins stumbled into Tucson everyone is going to be talking about what happened last time Dorrell’s team marched in with a gaudy record. If Dorrell has truly learned from his previous stumbles as a head coach, we expect him to have his team mentally ready and pull out a tough win. Again this is why he was brought into Westwood. He was brought in to build a program that is mentally tough and capable of winning Pac-10 championships. If he is truly worth the money (almost a million bucks a year) UCLA is spending on him, Bruins will bounce back from the week and improve their record to 8-1.

ASU (w): Dennis Erickson is kind of a shady college football coach (notorious for putting together programs of questionable character) and he will probably fit in nicely in a school which will probably do anything to win. But ASU given the talent it has on its roster will have no business competing against the Bruins expected to be in the final stretch to get to Rose Bowl for the first time since 1999. Bruins go to 9-1.

Oregon (w): This is going to be another show-me game for DeWayne Walker. Last year Walker admitted how he was outschemed by Bellotti’s spread offense. If the Bruins play up to expectations the whole season this is going to be the final hurdle before they head into South Central in a battle for the Rose Bowl. We expect Bruin defense to come out like bunch of gangbusters and hound Dennis Dixon all day. Bruin offense should not have problem putting up points against a defense which got embarrassed by teams such as Arizona, Oregon State and BYU. Bruins go to 10-1.

Southern Cal (w): Obviously I don’t need to write much to weave the storyline/expectations for this game. We are not going to worry too much about a program which choked against a Dorrell coached football team with a BCS game on the line. This is a team that is riding high after a Rose Bowl against an underachieving Michigan program which is led by a rich man’s Terry Donahue. Trojans have all those All Americans and nice defense. But their offense isn’t much when it comes to featuring a dynamic scheme that strikes fear in the hearts and minds of college defensive coordinators. All they do is line up their 5 stars backs and receivers and come straight at you. Obviously even an above average coach like Walker had no problem figuring them out. With a Rose Bowl on the line and probably his job on the line, we will expect Dorrell to win this game, run his record to 11-1 and bring UCLA’s first Pac-10 championship since 1999.
Now obviously the scenarios above represent our expectations based on the talent we have returning to our program. UCLA has enough talent on its squad to be one of the two or three most talented teams in the Pac-10. Now given that we are going into Dorrell’s fifth year this will be his "show me" year in which we and rest of the Bruins Nation will expect him to deliver on the hype he (himself) generated during his hiring when he promised that he would put together a program that would win Pac-10 championships and defeat Southern Cal.

It’s now or never for Karl Dorrell. If it becomes clear during the middle of the season Karl Dorrell will once again fail to deliver on these expectations, it will be time for him to go. And this time a season ending win over Southern Cal should not be enough to save his job should at the bare minimum one of the end zones of Rose Bowl do not have UCLA letterings on January 1, 2008.

2007-08 will be Dorrell's "show me" season. He is not going to find any place to hide should he fail to deliver again in his fifth year in Westood.

GO BRUINS.

God how I want a great FB season!!! My issue is that given the history established over the past 4 years, the inspiration and creativity it takes sometimes to get over the top has yet to surface. Come on KD make me a believer on this one!!!

This is a well-written piece.
I think you should send it to Mr. Guerrero.  He won't respond, I'm sure, but it would be good I think to make sure he understands the expectation for this team.

by Fox 71 on May 16, 2007 6:55 AM PDT reply actions

At Utah?
I am assuming we scheduled this game back when UTAH was in a BCS Game?  Otherwise, since when does UCLA need to do a home-and-home with schools like UTAH?

Sure I like our schedule from a final record point of view - but otherwise it is lackluster (Notre Dame is a nice name, but they are so overrated it that a court could take judicial notice of it).  Notre Dame is a must win.  And if their fans embarass us by taking up half the seats I am going to throw-up.

11-1 would be nice.  And, I think it is a fair expectation.  Unfortunately, however, KD hasn't shown me an ability to go against 4-0 against teams like SC, CAL, OREGON, and ND.  Too bad.

by rfirpo on May 16, 2007 7:36 AM PDT reply actions

Wazzu?????
Bill Doba is worse that Karl Dorrell.

No wide-outs

No Running backs

No defense(D-line weak,Linebackers weak,secondary weak)

Wazzu might be the worst team in the pac 10 if it wasn't for Stanford

Arizona is the 1st possible loss.
New Spread Offense(tough for d-walker),QB returns,good wide-outs, O-line returns,plus home field.

Cal will have a tough game cause UCLA has a Bye week to prepare for them and they dont.

Otherwise I totally agree with this post.

Go Bruins!!

Almost totally accurate
except I challenge anyone who says any coach is worse than Mr. Dorrell.  I would trade Mr. Dorrell for Coach Doba or Coach (you fill in the name) in a heartbeat.

wow
I love your optimism about our team's prospects for the upcoming season.  However, I think you need to put the Kool-Aid down and remember one key fact: Karl Dorrell is still coaching this team, and the last time I checked, he was an absolutely inept coach.  So, unless KD picked up a copy of "College Football For Dummies" during this past offseason, I think we are in for another season of the same pathetic ineptitude we have seen in the last 4 seasons.

I agree that with the schedule and returning  talent, we SHOULD have an impressive season.  But if you genuinely believe we will win 11 games, you are setting yourself up for a big letdown.  I actually think we'd have a better chance of winning 11 games if Coach Howland assumed the helm of the football team.

by SactoBruin on May 16, 2007 8:17 AM PDT reply actions

It's not the Kool Aid
It the difference between expectations and predictions.  Yours is a prediction, and I'm afraid it may be accurate.  But, with 5 years, all the returners on both sides of the ball, and the schedule, among other things, I think these are reasonable expectations.

by Menelaus on May 16, 2007 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Sactobruin...
if you look at the first line under the picture, you will see that Nestor has framed this piece as expectations of our head coach, given the circumstances.

This is not a prediction piece on how our football team is going to do.

by bornagainbruin on May 16, 2007 8:44 AM PDT reply actions

prediction vs. expectation
yes, I noticed the careful framing of the terminology here, but this distinction is merely semantics.  Furthermore, to go game-by-game and give a detailed explanation of how each contest should occur, then it's a prediction.  If you then try to say that this is just what you "expect" to happen, not a "prediction," I fail to see any genuine difference.  In that case, the "expectation" is merely a recitation of "what you would like to happen" and may or may not have any connection with reality.

Here's my prediction: Koach Dorrell will win 7-8 games.  He will lose some games that he should win.  He will win some games that he should lose.  His coaching style will be frustratingly conservative at inappropriate times.  He will struggle embarassingly (and lose) in a third-tier bowl game (back to Las Vegas anyone?).  He will then get fired and sit back and count the severance package so generously bestowed upon him by Guerrero's annual contract extensions (I think he's signed through 2026 by now).

by SactoBruin on May 16, 2007 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously?
I see a huge difference between "this is what you MUST do" and "this is what you'll PROBABLY do".

by Tydides on May 16, 2007 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

alright...
Yes, and if you don't really think there is a reasonable likelihood of "what you must do" actually occurring, what's the point of even mentioning it?  Any legitimate fan of the program would love to see an 11 win season.  And if you are being honest and realistic, your expectations should match your predictions.

In this discussion, it may be that Nestor is saying "With the amount of time you've had with this program, the number of returning starters you have, and the favorable schedule, all of the pieces are in place for an 11 win season.  And if you can't pull that off, then you are not the guy to be handling this program and you're fired."  And I have to say that I agree with that, although I'd find a way to be satisfied with 10 wins.

Now, if you would like to make a distinction between "what I would like to see" and  "what I expect to see," then you may have a legitimate discussion there.  Otherwise, I think we are playing a game of semantics as I noted before.

by SactoBruin on May 16, 2007 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

What's the point?
Standards and accountability, that's what. If I have a job, I would like to know what is expected of me so that I can either meet or exceed those expectations. If no one sets anything down in stone, then who's to say I can't skate by doing the bare minimum with no one holding me accountable because there is no standard to judge me by. That is the situation we have if we do not make it explicitly clear what is expected. To do things your way is to have KD stick around forever, whether or not he succeeds this upcoming season. Success, of course, is defined by us and by our athletic department.

by Tydides on May 16, 2007 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough.

Based on the results on the field since then, that would have been the best solution. Either that or hire a real coach in the first place.

by Tydides on May 16, 2007 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

We can only hope....
Unfortunately, I have "zero" confidence in KD.  The only time during his tenure we had a competent offense was when we had a senior QB with a playmaking RB & a match-up nightmare of a TE.  Otherwise, our offense during KD's tenure has been inept.  I personally despise the WCO at the college level.  It takes pro's years for them to get comfortable with it so how can one expect a college kid to master in a 4 - 5 year period wherein he won't be playing all those years anyways.  I see no creativity, adjustments, putting players in positions to succeed, etc.

I think Walker has brought improvement on the defensive side of the ball but I'm not ready to anoint him as a defensive genius.  We were too inconsistent (SC vs. FSU) during the season.  Our offense put our D in compromising positions all year long but we'll see if he's the real deal or not.

Coaches value senior leadership.  This team is stacked with seniors.  There is no excuse for not taking the Pac 10 and beating SC.  It is just sad that although I hope for the best, reality tells me that I'm going to get the same old crap from KD.  If KD doesn't live up to these expectations, DG better kick KD out the door.  A University that demands excellence in all its sports should never allow mediocrity be amongst its presence.

GO BRUINS!!!

Great and Reasonable Expectations
Mainstream media will say that expecting 11 wins is unreasonable in light of where we are in the Pac-10 hierarchy (which is to say that we are in the middle, the soft underbelly), but it is reasonable to expect that every once in awhile, we would win a Pac-10 title (which is likely to require 11 wins in a 12-game schedule).

Unfortunately for us fans, as I've posted in the past, Dorrell's record of mediocrity proves that he is not a coach who will ever lead his team to a top-10 finish, much less a Pac-10 title. So our reasonable expectations will remain unfulfilled. I know we are not into predictions on this site, but I predict (and don't allow these to affect or diminish our expectations) that Dorrell will lead us to losses in one of the first 5 games, losses to Cal and at Arizona, a loss at USC (of course) and a loss to at least one of Oregon, Wazzu or Notre Dame. Gee, that would look a lot like last year (only without 13-9). I predict that this will be Dorrell's last year at the helm. Let's hope that Guerrero finds a Ben Howland quality coach to lead this misdirected program.

If there was ever a year where Dorrell can accomplish this, it would have to be this year.  Otherwise, when is he going to be able to do it?

by Free the 16 on May 16, 2007 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

High Expectations
Expectations should be high, and this should be the year that will determine the fate of KD, but until the offense shows they can be at least average. I think 11-1 and beating the pre-season #1 team in the nation by 20 is not realistic.

by wizardofoc on May 16, 2007 10:20 AM PDT reply actions

Well
those expectations were from Marc Dellins, SID of UCLA athletics. So I think we can hold KD to those standards. Plus its up to him to get the offense fixed and deliver the goods. We shouldn't lower the expectations calibrating to his shitty coaching.

by bluestreet on May 16, 2007 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Let's compare expectations
between the football program and the basketball program.  I think we had a realistic expectation going into this season that Coach Howland would lead us to the final four again.  I have every expectation that he will do that again next year.  Is making it to the final four an unrealistic expectation for Coach Howland and the basketball team?  I don't think it is.

Now football.  I read what Nestor says and what the SID says, but is that expectation realistic?  Based on all the analysis, sure it's realistic.

But there is another expectation based on past performance, and that is an expectation of no leadership on the sidelines, no imagination, absolutely predictable play-calling, an absence of huevos when it comes time to making a clutch decision (or to put it another way, not playing to win).  Those expectations are based on what we've seen from Mr. Dorrell in his entire tenure here.  And another sure-fire expectation is that we will get beat in some absolutely winnable game after watching Mr. Dorrell's "deer in the headlights" look on the sidelines.  Then we will listen to him do more cliches, and then the entire BN will collectively vomit.

Sorry fellow Bruins, but that is my expectation as long as we have that loser on the sidelines.  I never thought I would see someone more inept than Coach Howland's predecessor, but I have, and his name is Mr. Dorrell.

by Fox 71 on May 16, 2007 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Question for Nestor about the expectations
11-1 regular season.  Got it.

Based on that, what is the expectation for our bowl?  I would think that would get us into a BCS bowl, though probably not the title game.  Do you agree?

by Free the 16 on May 16, 2007 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

BCS or bust
Its an unreasonable expectation for a coach in his 5th season bringing back all that talent on D and the former #1 QB (and overall) recruit in the nation.

If not this season, when?

by Ajax on May 16, 2007 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...
... if we win the Pac-10 outright, then we get a BCS bowl slot.  It's that simple, isn't it?

In a sport where there is no playoff, and teams are inordinately biased in making it to BCS bowls by virtue of their poll standings being bumped up by their not-at-all-recent history (Notre Dame) or their name value over less-publicized opponents (U$C) or by what many perceive as East Coast bias (Penn State, Michigan), I only want what we can sort-of control.

The BCS will take care of itself.

WIN THE PAC-10.

WIN OVER $C.

I'VE HAD ENOUGH.

Good post
I think Nestor has done a good job at framing the issue. The issue is expectations v. predictions. Based on the returning talent and the experience level of the returning talent, a BCS run is a reasonable expectation, although I disagree with his expectation that we will beat USC. However, I imagine that Nestor's predictions are not as optimistic as his expectations, and I find myself seeing 2007 ending with a 9-3 record, a loss at USC, and a berth in the Sun Bowl. I see us losing to Cal (Tedford is a better coach than KD, good QB), at Washington State (we don't do well on their field, they have a good senior QB and always seem to find good receivers), and of course to USC (almost impossible to defeat at the Coliseum, revenge factor for last year, better athletes on both sides of the ball, better coaching.) Plus, there's a good chance that we will find a way to lose one more game for inexplicable reasons because that is what we have done each year since KD has been in charge.

Given the markers set down by DG and KD when he arrived as coach, I do not see KD surviving an 8-4 year and probably not a 9-3 year, expecially if a loss to USC is part of that record.

I am sure the USC honks will read this and find the comments re USC absurd, but Nestor's take on their offense is spot-on. Their offense is not very creative, and none of their running backs have done much to scare any solid defense. Booty is an excellent QB, but the receivers, while undeniably large and talented per the recruiting rankings, are relatively untested and may be no more effective than USC tailbacks were last year (able but not otherwordly.) USC should have a good offense this year, but nothing like the 2005 juggernaut, and if our D plays as well and as inspired as it did last year, we have a good shot at pulling the upset again. Their D, though, should be outstanding.

I had my resume typed by a service long ago and far away when I had limited experience. As the typist was finishing it up, I was explaining how important all the learning experiences I had to date were (at least to me). She had a response I will never forget. "I see the learning. When do you finish learning and start earning?". Talk about sitting me down!!! So, my question for KD is when do we finish turning corners, learning, growing, and all the other excuses, and start winning large, dominating, finishing teams off, claiming championships, demonstrating active leadership, and excelling in big bowl games??!!!!

I noticed Jeff Strand's picture on this piece in the lower left hand corner. FWIW, my wife and I attended his wedding in 1981 (about. Guess where it was? At a church that overlooks the Rose Bowl in the out-of-doors. He said all he wanted to do in life was be a cheerleader for UCLA. The D can do it, but
I'm not convinced that this offense will ever carry the team. In order to win the Bruins will need the defense to shut down opponents and score once in awhile. We lack a break away running back, don't have a go to receiver and don't have a proven QB. The O-line is a lot of question marks for now and we struggle to stay healthy at TE.
The plan that would make sense to me would be to muscle up and try to control the ball (go big backs and blocking TE or H-Back)and let the defense win the game. I think 10-2 is where we finish, could be 9-3. Anything worse is a fireable offense.

something you obviously aren't used to, being a trOJan and all, but I'm willing to bet that you "predicted" that you'd beat us last year too, didn't you?

13-9

Live it. Love it.

by Tydides on May 16, 2007 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

that was last year
so get over it.  we were driving for the winning TD and john david booty made a mistake with that throw just like at OSU.  otherwise that game was ours if he just threw a little higher.  we'll see if your still talking after you come back to our house on Dec 1.

by FightOn0708 on May 16, 2007 3:59 PM PDT reply actions

I don't have to get over anything
We won. Why would I want to get over that? As if you driving for the winning TD makes up for the fact that you didn't get it. Let me give you a hint: It doesn't. Because the scoreboard reads: 13-9.

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda. Sounds like trOJan bullshit to me. Hey, if we didn't make mistakes last year, we would have gone undefeated and been the champions.

Your bitterness amuses me. Keep it coming.

LOSE ON!

Mistakes Mistake....
Stupidest thing I ever heard, aside from bad refereeing, no way you can justify a loss by saying you made mistakes but were the better team. I could say the same about the pre 2007 Colts, the 2004 Lakers in the finals, the Bruins under Lavin or any number of teams

by sbizzy57 on May 16, 2007 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

Paging Matt Whineart
It must be a trOJan trait where they continue to believe that they are great in the face of overwhelming objective evidence to the contrary. See: Classless Matt Whineart after his team got reamed by Texas in the Rose Bowl.

In the tradition of trOJan bullshit spin, they probably call this trait "resilience". The rest of the world calls it "denial".

by Tydides on May 16, 2007 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

no way you were the better team
even if you say the QB screw up at the end doesnt matter, the fact is you only won by 4 pts. and we beat you by 47 in 05.  or maybe you forgot about that when reggie bush does a 3 yard dive over your so called defense.

by FightOn0708 on May 16, 2007 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Better team?
If thinking you were the so called "better team" makes you happy, then congratulations. Since we beat the "better team" I'll take the scoreboard victory.

HA
Right, so I'm supposed to forget about 13-9 which happened JUST LAST YEAR, yet you want to bring up TWO YEARS AGO. At least 13-9 is still relevant to the discussion. 2 years ago is neither here nor there. See what a hypocrite you are?

Now that you've been exposed as a complete dumbass, either come with something semi-intelligible, which I know is difficult for a trOJan with Paris Hilton class brain mass, or don't post at all. We like to keep this a place where adults can have intelligent conversation, and you trOJans ALWAYS lower the level of the conversation to a pissing match. If all you're going to do is bitch/moan/whine/cry and make lame excuses like you've been doing, then you leave me no choice but to whip out the delete/ban stick.

Once again, bring something of substance or don't bring it at all. Last chance, trOJan.

typical dumba$$ comment
from a typical $UC fan.  How's this for a 4-year Cheat Carroll scoresheet: Rampant, flagrant flaunting of NCAA rules, agents running amok on campus and in the locker room, players driving fancy cars flashing wads of cash, arrest records, academic fraud, and racism.

Oh yeah, and a 13-9 loss to UCLA.

by Class of 86 on May 16, 2007 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

**oops, typo...
I meant flouting, not "flaunting".

by Class of 86 on May 16, 2007 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

gee, thanks for clearing that up
I must have missed the provision in the NCAA rulebook where 4 point wins are not in fact, "wins".

If we were truly that bad, why couldn't your offense score on us more than one possession THE ENTIRE GAME? Surely Booty did not screw up every time he touched the ball.

by bruinhoo on May 16, 2007 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
Trojie forgot about that.  That high-octane offense only scored 9 points the whole game.  Very impressive.

Hey $C $Cumbag, by the way, how did your basketball team do this year against the Bruins?

I won't hold my breath waiting for your reply.

by Barnes2JJ on May 17, 2007 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

not even that much credit
The "High-octane" offense scored only 7 of those points. The other 2 came off a safety, if I correctly recall.

by bruinhoo on May 17, 2007 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

You are correct
The 2 was off of a safety.  I was (hopefully, obviously) being facetious about $C's great offensive performance.

Arizona has made a habit of spoiling seasons
They did it to us in 05 and Cal last year (they would have won the Pac 10 outright with a win over UA), so I wouldn't be shocked if we lost to them.

Also, I thought that WSU's QB (Brink?) was a senior last year.

by SuperBruinMan on May 16, 2007 5:50 PM PDT reply actions

I just don't want to lose to SC...
That would really suck.  And they are coming back loaded this year.  In all honesty, I think they expected the auto-W last season and we got lucky.

This season, I'm not so sure.  Is Jesus gonna save us this season?  Our O is downright bad.  And while our D should be highly capable, you don't gothrough the Pac without a solid passing game.  No prolific O = no W's.

South Central won't have that problem.

by LilMan on May 16, 2007 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

Oh, and a 20 point win against SC is not only....
unrealistic, given our collective history, it's also just plain dumb.  Always a close game.

Always.

by LilMan on May 16, 2007 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

11-1 Is Certainly Possible ...........
When I take a close look at that schedule it is tougher when I take a moment to really reflect on it.  But 11-1 IS not necessarily unrealistic.  The road games with Utah, Oregon St. (the week BEFORE home with ND), and Wazzu are ALL trap games as I see it.  But, at the same time, they are winnable if we stay focused.  Even at 11-0 a win against hated USC at the Coliseum might be a bridge too far.  Still, I think when it's all said and done we should get a B.C.S. bowl game, though.

by Minnesota Bruinfan on May 16, 2007 8:05 PM PDT reply actions

Not out of the realm of possibility
Not something that I am forseeing, though that is shaped by the fact that Karl Dorrell is our coach.

@ SUC is always a tough one, agree that @ OSU and Wazzu can be trap games. Cal could be tricky; while they lost Lynch, Forsett and Longshore can still do some damage, especially if Walker's D hasn't yet solved the spread/non-pro set offenses. Hopefully the Rose Bowl streak will continue against those guys. Unless Dorrell makes some strides over the season, I'm afraid that I see the Holiday Bowl in our future (if that).

This is my longest respnse ever...
UCLA football expectations....

Upon viewing this thread, there has been much debate on expectation vs. prediction etc.  Most come down to semantic debates about the program, players, and obviously the coach.

With returning players and a soft schedule, THIS PARTICULAR season SHOULD end up with at LEAST 10 wins if not 11 or 12.  For this season, it is a REASONABLE expectation.  All programs are subject to "down" years as talented seniors and juniors jump to the NFL and a learning curve needs to be established for the next crop of players.  We will now be unduring year 5 of the Dorrell era.  I have always personally felt that a new coach at a program should truly be judged in year 4 and 5 of his tenure.  Dorrell has already failed miserably in year 4 (besides the awesome SUC victory).  This year is his 5th year, and although everything sets up for the program, I have little confidence that 10/11/12 wins will occur.

The EXPECTATION from fans, alumni, and DG SHOULD be a PAC-10 championship with this squad.  However, many of our personal PREDICTIONS are lower.  From previous accounts of spring practice, the offense is still a complete mess.  And our stoic coach has shown consistant inability to out-coach or out-scheme our opponents.

With this in the back of my mind, I feel Dorrell will "coach" this team to 8/9 victories with countless cliches and excuses as to why his team wasn't able to win a championship and lose a lower tier bowl game.  I would list them, but we've heard them for 4 years now.  They MIGHT have played then, but there is NO EXCUSE now.  UCLA MUST win this year or he should be gone (not that he shouldn't be gone by now anyway).

My fear, which I believe is shared by many of us on BN, is that Dorrell wins 8/9, wins the Sun Bowl versus an upstart crappy Minnesota team and earns another extension from DG.  I feel like the end of the Lavin era of hoops, where you knew eventually the bottom would drop out and you'd hit rock bottom.  Not that any of us want that to happen, but once Lavin finally collapsed, we FINALLY garnered a top tier coach and began to excel.  I sincerely hope that Dorrell can lead this team to a successful campaign, but I just can't see it happening.  I fear UCLA will be second rate until Dorrell hits "rock bottom."  Unfortunately, that is hard as well considering the type of talent UCLA has over other teams in the conference.  UCLA football can't kill me another year, but I fear it will.

REASONABLE EXPECTATION: 10/11/12 wins, possible BCS bowl

PERSONAL PREDICTION: 8/9 wins, ugly offense, 2 late miracle wins, 2 bad losses, ugly bowl victory, contact extension, I cry.

Go Bruins, Go Howland, F-Lavin, and let's get rid of Dorrell....

I think he has to get into a BCS bowl
That is what I hold him to. IF he does that, he's been successful. I don't particularly care how he does it.

goes "ALL ACCESS" with the UCLA football team TODAY.

Please KD, don't look like an idiot.

by godblesstyus95 on May 17, 2007 8:44 AM PDT reply actions

A very tricky question
Hmmm.  The poll is very tricky.  I think I have to vote for making a BCS game.  I can envision a very disappointing scenario where UCLA is the Pac-10 champion:  Imagine a not so far fetched three way tie co-champions at 7-2 and the tiebreakers sending UCLA to the Sun Bowl.  That would not be acceptable.
I think we actually have to win or tie for the Pac-10 and make the Rose Bowl for my expectations to be met, that's a BCS Bowl, so that's my answer.

by Westwood Wizard on May 17, 2007 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

The world is upside down
According to Mr. Dorrell, he's helped the UCLA tradition re-emerge, or something like that.  Actually, we had pretty good teams until Mr. Dorrell assumed the role of coach.  (I chose not to say "until Mr. Dorrell started coaching" on purpose for obvious reasons.)

So now we have a tradition that translates into the list we have all seen over and over again.  The tradition that Mr. Dorrell has started means a 58% winning percentage, which translates to a seven win season, maybe a win over justsc but probably not (he's only won one of those), and a trip to a fourth tier bowl.  That's some tradition.  Gee whiz, that tradition is sure to make everyone in the BN sit up and take notice.

I sure have to take back everything I said in the past about Mr. Dorrell.  I didn't realize he was generating such a great tradition.  Third place (or fourth) in the Pac 10.  Wow.  Can it get any better than that?

WHY NOT US? WHY NOT NOW?
20 returning starters.

Speed and athleticism on BOTH sides of the ball.

Favorable schedule (Cal, Notre Dame, and Oregon all at home).

Talent at QB.

Exciting, aggressive defense.

Experience and depth at all skill and line positions.

A National Championship?

WHY NOT US???

WHY NOT NOW???

M

And we will have our vengeance, in this game and the next.
