Rally for 100th NCAA Championship

I received this email from Chancellor Norman Abrams:

May 14, 2007

Dear Bruins,

A celebration of athletic achievement is upon us.

Yesterday, UCLA won its 100th NCAA team championship, the first institution to reach this milestone. The women's water polo team defeated Stanford, 5-4, and continued a tradition of winning unmatched in the history of college sports.

A few weeks ago, the Bruins clinched the annual Lexus Gauntlet Trophy by beating USC in head-to-head competition. The 2006-07 season marked the first time that UCLA swept the Trojans in football, basketball and baseball.

Tomorrow, at 11:30 am, there will be a ceremony on Spaulding Field commemorating these triumphs. First, we will present the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy to Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. Then you'll hear brief words from Dan, 19-time NCAA volleyball championship coach Al Scates, 6-time NCAA softball championship coach Sue Enquist, 8-time NCAA water polo championship coach Adam Krikorian and me, as I present Adam with his 2007 NCAA trophy, UCLA's 100th. (Spaulding is located immediately across from Pauley Pavilion's Gate 7.)

You'll be seeing and hearing elements of our "First to 100" commemoration throughout the 2007-08 academic year as the Athletic Department honors this remarkable accomplishment.

Please join me tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. on Spaulding Field.

Sincerely,

Norman Abrams
Acting Chancellor

Hope to see many of you there!  GO BRUINS!!!

That's Awesome!
Too bad I have work at that same time. I would be there for sure if I didn't have to be in Simi stinking valley at the same time. If you're a student you should go, I would if I were still a student. I'll be there in spirit though.

Long Live the Bruins

Victory or until next year!

Wish they made Abrams permanent
because he is more into the bruins spirit than Carnesale did.  Hailed from Ivy League, Carnesale, I thought, seemed to think UCLA could not excel both athletically and academically.  Maybe that's why it took him so long, until Guerrero came, to dismiss Lavin.

I wish Baghdad University made him both coach and athletic director there.

Rally was great
Before the 100 Championships presentation started, they had a short ceremony for us winning the Lexus Gauntlet.  Sean Farnham was there opposite... no one!  Haha, he was free to make fun of SUC and John Jackson all he wanted.  Jackson was in attendance, but of course he didn't go up to the podium because it's not his day.  Mr. Guerrero gave a speech and introduced the representative from Lexus (her name escapes me).  She spoke a little about the competition and congratulated both UCLA and that other school.  DG presented her with one of those commemorative 13-9 football lithographs, which really got the crowd going.

All coaches that contributed to our taking of the Gauntlet this year went up to get their pictures taken and were interviewed by various media people.  I saw Jim Hill interview Coach Howland off to the side.  Then Ed Kezirian asked us to stick around and be patient for the other ceremony.

Everyone was there - yell crew, cheerleaders, Joe and Josephine, and the "best band in the world."  As expected, we did several eight claps throughout the whole thing.

For the 100 Championships ceremony, Mr. Kezirian started things off and (re-)introduced Mr. Guerrero.  DG spoke again, followed by Softball coach Sue Enquist, Chancellor Abrams, and of course, Coach Krikorian.  Enquist's speech sounded like a greatly impassioned graduation speech, and Coach K ("forget that guy out east, we have our own Coach K") joked that he just signed Enquist as his agent.

It was far more exciting than I just described it, but if I weren't so tired I'd try to rack my brain for more details.  It was a fantastic way to commemorate the 100th championship (the first of many, they said), and many, many props to the women's water polo team, who of course has just won their 3rd consecutive title.

Go Bruins!!!!!!

Proud to be a lifelong Bruin

UGH
Why, class, did you have to happen at 11:30 today?

I'm ahead of the curve
I did my class skipping early and often. Which is why I have to go to class now.
