ESPN All Access: KD sounds like, ....well KD

Just watched the ESPN All Access segment on our Bruins. As I feared, (and I'm sure no surprise to anyone here on BN), KD pretty much sounded like a bumbling, stumbling, cliche-dropping idiot. Here's a few of the gems:

KD: "You have to utilize your experience of what it took to win that type of game ('SC)...and...we've learned from that, and we've learned what not to do from the results of that." Huh?

KD: "We're trying to build that practice attitude of being very competitive...and (stutters) playing with your best rep, each time you get a rep to do something."   What?

KD: "They're understanding that, it takes them to be hard on themselves..to achieve great things." Ooooh, that's inspiring!

KD: "The image of UCLA football...is..rich in tradition...tradition was...kinda put on the backburner for a little bit...and now has re-emerged...I've helped bring that process back to (stutters) to the forefront." WTF?

There we were on the national stage, a chance to showcase our program, and this is the type of dialogue we get from our "coach"???? Did KD actually graduate from UCLA? I can't even make sense of what he's saying! On the bright side, at least Horton and Joseph sounded coherent and articulate. And at the end, Mark May said this:

"With 20 returning starters, they should win at least 10 games, possibly more"

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

(Stutters)
Alright, he stuttered, but did he clear his throat? A throat clear is a non-verbal indication of doubt (George Costanza).

But seriously, those sentences are incoherent. Maybe that's why it takes him so long to get the damn plays on the field.

Saw this
I had my comments in the "Expectations for 2007-2008" post.  You didn't mention the distortion of KD's record that they introduced the segment with, not to mention calling last year "a terrific season."

So many things to complain about
I didn't know where to begin. Clearly, to me, KD is just not a communicator. Period.

And how about that comment he made about "bringing tradition to the forefront" Are you kidding me? EARTH TO KARL: YOU HAVEN'T WON SHIT YET!

Sorry, I just can't take it anymore.

but they did plug
www.dumpdorrell.com...KD sounded even more pathetic on TV than his quotes read online.  As excited as I am about this year, I cannot suffer through any more of his drivel.
What would happen if Harbaugh & Co. surprise us (like UC Davis surprised them) over Labor Day weekend?  "We learned what not do by doing what we shouldn't do, so now we know what do in order to not do it again.  We're growing"

what did they say
about KD's record that was distorted and what did they say about dumpdorrell.com??

by DumpDorrell on May 18, 2007 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I heard Scott Van Pelt
(I think it was him) mention the website "dumpdorrell.com" specifically and begin to list some of the many critiques posted there at the beginning of the segment.  I didn't get the chance to verify #'s, as I was listening from the other room.  Hope somebody has it on TiVo

that would be a great clip to get
ESPN going over Dorrell's horrible record??!! That would be awesome.  If it is how you remember, we should get that clip and post it on this site and on dumpdorrell.

I remember that as well
He talked about the continuous 7-6 record, having beat SC to keep them from playing for a national championship but then got "Blasted" by Florida state.  And then I believe there was a sound-up of of a KD quote saying that now is the time...

"We've been to 5 straight bowls....
so what are we complaining about."  What the f**k?  Those ESPN tards need to shut their trap if they don't know shiat.

Yes, we've been to some very lucrative bowls that are shown before New Years Day because our coach is so considerate of others that he wants everybody to enjoy the holiday.

When will this nightmare end?  Thank God for Howland!

I've had enough of Mr. Dorrell
I had actually started keeping a list of all the insipid things Mr. Dorrell had said, and was going to spring them on the BN at an appropriate time.  But no more.  I am going to have to purge this diary from my computer, because I don't want any of those wonderful Dorrellisms leaking out and ruining my hard drive.

He is truly an embarrassment.  What is so surprising to me is that he apparently doesn't realize how staggeringly stupid he sounds.  I have never encountered a UCLA grad who sounds that inane, so I have to question whether he actually graduated.

My position remains as stated time after time:  Mr. Dorrell must be fired immediately.  Every day that he keeps someone else from being the head coach of the team is another day that the team slips below the mediocrity level.  No reasonable argument can be articulated to justify keeping Mr. Dorrell as head coach.  NONE.

And I disagree that Mr. Dorrell with the note that Mr. Dorrell is a bad communicator.  I think he's just plain stupid.  And what he is doing is accurately and adequately communicating the best his thought process can generate.  He thinks in cliches.  He actually believes all this baloney about growing and turning corners and all that other indecipherable drivel quoted above.

To save time and to keep my blood pressure at a reasonable level, from now on I'm just going to abbreviate my posts.  "FDI" means "Fire Dorrell Immediately."

I just got an email from my alma mater asking for money.

I sent back "Not a penny until Karl Dorrell is fired."

Took me a while to join you, but '71, I'm on record.

It was truly embarrassing
I had no idea what he said.

And at the time I had no idea what he was saying.

Except for the part about UCLA football being on the backburner, and my reaction was that -- hey, YOU put it there.

there is nothing he could say
that would make any of us happy, so I don't pay any attention to it.

That being said, he is a terrible public speaker, regardless of whether his content is meaningful or not.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

by silverlakebruin on May 18, 2007 9:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That was really depressing.
KD has no plan, no experience, no history, no aura and no communication skills.  He does however shower often, starch his shorts and remember birthdays.  Would you let this guy run your companay?  Would you give him money to start a company?  It's not that he's a bad guy, he's just not THE guy.  At first I thought ESPN did a terrible job editing the piece to make it look like the players are unsure and concerned.  Then I realized that's probably all the tape they had and these players are unsure and concerned.  KD's tenure as coach has produced players who seem like they have no guidance at all.  As a result, it also seems like they don't really feel a part of anything, they aren't having much fun or flying around the ball (or winning).  They seem to be living scared of when they will make a mistake and having so much new stuff to deal with every day with no plan, style, unity or definition to the program.  What's one word to describe the program?  Do they look proud to be a part of this team?  Do they have a goal?  Is there a swagger or moto or style that describes what it is to be a UCLA player?  Makes a fan worry there will be more of the same this year.

A couple other thoughts:

It was great to hear ESPN quoting Dorrell as saying (my paraphrase) "This is the year."

Thanks ESPN for showing the clip of (I think it was Olsen) throwing, high, late and inside for the easy pick and quick 6 for the defense.

On the BN expectations for next year.  First, and I don't know if this has been covered, winning the Pac-10 and going to a BCS bowl are the same thing.  If you win the Pac, you go to a BCS bowl so that poll may need to be redone.

Also, while my expectations are a BCS bowl, I look at the 11-1 prediction and can't help but think that people need to remember that UCLA can easily lose any game on that schedule.

And back to All Access on ESPN, did anyone see Boise State?  Having just won arguably one of the best college football games in history, their players talked about building and winning and growing and being part of something great.  Contrasted to how our guys sounded in was a remarkable difference.  They also mentioned how they've outlawed Fiesta Bowl gear because that was last year...  something to think about when seeing someone wearing a 13-9 t-shirt and wondering why we're always 7-6.

by greatgymnasticsschool on May 18, 2007 12:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

not necessarily true
we can win the Pac-10 and still NOT go to BCS bowl.  Just ask Cal last year, who were co-champs with SC but did not make it to a BCS game. They technically have the right to say they won the Pac-10 and fly a banner.  If KD wins the Pac-10 (even if its co-champ) he will save his job, but if he doesn't go to a BCS game at the same time, many will still want him to leave.

In case anyone thinks that being denied the Rose Bowl takes away the conference title recognition, think back to the 50s and early 60s when the conference champ did not get the Rose Bowl invite if they had gone the year before. It hurt us in '54 when our undefeated #2 (I think) ranked team should have played top ranked Ohio St in the Rose Bowl for the national championship, but we couldnt because we played in the Rose Bowl the year before against Michigan.

thanks for the link
not sure if that was the whole thing but what is there is awful. And the "expert" later says "UCLA has to learn how to deal with prosperity."  What?? What prosperity??

I hate to say it, I honestly do, but Dorrell looks worse than he has at any time. He talks with less confidence and determination than at any time that I have ever seen. He truly looks and talks as if he is overwhelmed and really doesnt know what to do or say.  I mean, saying that the players need to be "hard on themselves" to be champions is about the worst "insight" I have ever heard. It comes from someone who has no idea what it takes to be a champion.

I was hoping beyond hope, truly, that this team can achieve great things despite Dorrell, but they are going to have to dig deep within themselves and overcome Dorrell's deficiencies that will stymie every effort.  And that may be asking too much.

What a truly bad interview that was. Stunning. The only way Karl Dorrell ever surprises us, aside from the SC win, is in how he pushes the envelope of mediocrity.  He is regressing.  This stands in stark contrast with the First To 100 campaign and the amazing job Howland is doing.

that was the whole thing
As sad as it is...  KD and by connection the player's attitude is down and miserable and scared...  Doesn't it feel in some weird way like losing would be more comfortable for them than winning?  Like it would put less pressure on them and feel more normal?  KD just doesn't understand what a winning attitude is and doesn't belong in Westwood.

by greatgymnasticsschool on May 18, 2007 7:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree
it does look like they are scared and like it would be almost a relief to lose.  I cannot recall ever seeing an athletic program being promoted as on the rise and looking like it expects and would prefer to fall. Unreal ... words cannot adequately describe how sad that is.

Top RB Recruit
Darrell Scott (St. Bonaventure in Ventura) has named a Top 3... and UCLA's not in it.  He includes USC, Penn St, and Florida.

UCLA is no longer in contention for any of Scout's 5 star players (though the rankings will probably change).

by SuperBruinMan on May 18, 2007 8:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

one thing we have to keep in mind
and should not forget, is that Dorrell needs to be able to take an out ... to the NFL.  We, as UCLA fans, need that option too.  Realistically, I see Dorrell winning 8 games, 9 at best, and not winning the Pac-10 or going to a BCS game.  Though I think DG will fire Dorrell with 8 wins, it will be hard with 9.  Im hoping that DG will, behind the scenes, forcefully nudge Dorrell to look for that NFL jump if he comes up short with 9 wins.  Therefore, it is critical that Dorrell NOT look like a complete tool until that time.  This interview on ESPN hurt his marketability, and that hurts our chances of getting rid of him in the likely scenario of 9 wins.

People might recall I correctly predicted the 7-5 season last year, and the SC win on the eve of the game.  I think its 8 or 9 wins this year, with 9 wins being the worst case scenario for us.  8 wins, like I said, and Dorrell is fired.  10+ wins and Dorrell gets NFL offers and he bolts (not wanting to stick around for a hugely depleted '08 and another sure-fire .500 season, basically his 4th in 6 years).  I think its NFL or bust for him and us.  Better to get him to reduce his idiotic bumblings so that we can make the NFL a reality.

DG needs to take a very close look at what exposure Dorrell gets this coming season to make that NFL option as available as possible, to ensure that DG can do his job with the least amount of damage to the program as possible. DG earns his job this year.  He cannot afford to have Dorrell do any more idiotic interviews again.  Though the general public may not remember this interview, football insiders will. Hopefully, its early enough so that Dorrell can counter any effects of this interview.  But I wouldnt count on it if I were DG.

And Dorrell, for his part, should realize that his  shortcomings in terms of PR because he should know above all else that this season he is on a 6 month job interview.  He made a bad first impression.  I dont think KD is aware like we are of all his idiotic bumblings but he better start learning.

by DumpDorrell on May 19, 2007 11:48 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Overly Optimistic, in my opinion.
Your analysis has merit.  It looks like the team has the talent to get 7 wins even with Elmer Fudd as coach, and that 8 wins is a pretty reasonable prediction.

But I don't think that assessment takes the "Dorrell Factor" sufficiently into account.  I noted elsewhere that it looks like Mr. Dorrell is good for at least 1.5 losses each year.  So I think 7 or even 6 wins is a more likely result.

I watched that interview once.  I resisted the temptation to turn it off immediately, but I watched the whole thing.  I think Mr. Guerrero should be required to watch that once a day until he fires Mr. Dorrell.  Mr. Dorrell isn't even very good at delivering cliches any more.  He is more and more simply the man in the empty suit.

Somehow, the message has to get through to Mr. Guerrero.

by Fox 71 on May 19, 2007 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

With this schedule
5 wins is a worst case scenario.  This team should be nearly as good as the 2005 team, which did manage to get 10 wins.  And there is absolutely no reason to think this team will be worse than last season, where the team won 7 games.  I would say the most likely regular season record is 8-4 with losses to OSU, Cal, WSU, and USC.  Going 6-6 is unlikely, and nobody should be shocked if we are 6-0 when Cal comes to the Rose Bowl.

by SuperBruinMan on May 19, 2007 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see what you're saying
But exactly what job in the NFL is he going to get?  He certainly will not get a head coaching gig.  I seriously doubt anyone will make him their OC.  So the argument that he's going to the NFL to save face doesn't hold much water when it's for a wide receiver coaching gig.

by greatgymnasticsschool on May 19, 2007 1:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree with GGS on this one
It seems reasonably likely that anyone who hires Mr. Dorrell in the NFL would take at least a brief glimpse of his "achievements" as a head coach.  Even with such a review, someone like Detroit or Oakland might say something like, "Hey, not bad.  So he has the worst first-four-year record since World War II, but when you go back to the Iron Age, it doesn't look so bad."

But presumably he has to interview.  And I think we've seen the real Mr. Dorrell.  He is flat out stupid.  He thinks in cliches, which is why he speaks in cliches.  That's his way of critical analysis.  Not even the management at Detroit or Oakland would be stupid enough to hire Mr. Dorrell once they talked to him.  And I mean in ANUY capacity - certainly not head coach, but also not even a wide receiver coach.  (Quick question - if Mr. Dorrell had been dealing with Randy Moss last year, what would Moss's numbers have been?  How on earth could Mr. Dorrell coach a Moss or a Keyshawn Johnson or a Terrell Owens?)

Nope, I think there is no chance that Mr. Dorrell will be invited to go to the NFL.  Neither Mr. Dorrell nor anyone in the NFL is going to do Mr. Guerrero's job for him.  Mr. Guerrero is going to have to fire Mr. Dorrell.  And he should do it now.

all good points ... but
Dorrell's name was mentioned in a number of NFL openings last year DURING that abominable season.  NFL owners are looking for the next African-American coach and Dorrell's name comes up often.  And remember that NFL owners hire horrible coaches ... just look at who Dallas has hired!!

If Dorrell wins 9 or 10 games his name will be mentioned again and again in NFL openings and he will interview because he has said that the NFL is his goal.  The point isnt whether he is a good coach or not.

by DumpDorrell on May 20, 2007 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

DD, I think you need to change your name
to WT (for "Wishful Thinking.")

I guess I'm a pessimist when Mr. Dorrell is involved.  I don't think he'll win 9 or 10 games (or 11 or 12 or 13) and get snapped up by some lucky NFL team.

And I don't think he'll win only 4 or 5 games and be given the option of either leaving voluntarily or being given a blindfold and a cigarette and asked to stand next to a wall.

I foresee 6 or 7 wins, more cliches than have ever been uttered in the past, more scapegoats (both coaches and players), an enormous groundswell of support by the Dorrellistas, intense pressure by the Black Coaches Association, and an announcement by Mr. Guerrero that he really thinks Mr. Dorrell has grown, and that the corner has been turned.

Mr. Dorrell is not going to leave.  He will stay here forever.  This is Groundhog Day, Bruin style.

It's too dark to be a Chargers jersey, and it doesn't have the bolt on the shoulders. But it also has white numbers, which means it's not a UCLA jersey. Stupid knockoff all around.

he was still trying to rep UCLA from the background, to the choice of clothing of everyone else in those pictures. I am probably not alone in being disgusted by this.

Of course I am embarrassed as well, but we can't choose who hops on our bandwagon. At least it's appropriate, since that cheap imitation ripoff jersey, Sanjaya, and Idol are all garbage.
