Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Brace yourselves!

I have found something even worse than Sanjaya. Scarier, freakier, and far more disturbing. This was forwarded to me by my friend who works at the US embassy in Paris (where do I sign up?!). You need to pay attention, about 1 minute into the video clip. I hope it does not make you throw up. I gagged a little bit, not because of the video but...well I won't give it away, you'll just have to watch it.

As background, the guy is a jokester, kind of in the same vein as Weird Al. Obviously this was a French clip. But he's making fun of the whole reggaeton movement (don't worry Fox, you should be GLAD you've never heard any of it).

So here it is, in all its glory, the most disturbing video you've ever seen. I am sorry to share this with you, for I know it will not make you laugh. But the truth must be known. I can't insert the clip but here is the link:

If anyone knows how to nestle the clip in here please do. And please don't shoot the messenger.

Go Bruins.

Cancel my Memorial Day plans
In fact, cancel my 4th of July plans, my Labor Day plans, and my NY trip, too.

Cancel everything.  I really, really, really, REALLY have gouged my eyes out this time.

It was horrible enough on its own.  The fact that a UCLA jersey gets significant screen time is the ultimate beat-down.  At least a Celtics jersey made an appearance.

Unbelievable!

What the???
MMM...Kay...
Actually, I think that I yerped a little of my lunch back up, but it still was kinda funny (somehow I made it through the whole clip). Maybe it's because I'm a little freking nutso myself. I dunno!

UCLA is international
for better or worse.

THE GOGGLES! THEY DO NOTHING!

by Tydides on May 25, 2007 4:07 PM PDT reply actions

Um, yeah
To think that I was going to eat dinner after this. All I can say is that at least he changed into the Celtics jersey for that last scene.

Wow
I must say, I always thought Puccini was the greatest at creating the perfect melody line (3rd Act Quartet in La Boheme, or the Love Duet in Butterfly are good examples), but then I say this.  And who said French Opera died with Bizet.

It's hard to deny that France is the cultural hub of the universe.

Hey Fox.....
Can you please come take my art of listening final?

by lil eg not cs on May 25, 2007 11:41 PM PDT up reply actions

The listening part is easy
It's the part that comes after the listening that's hard.

Every bit frightening.

UCLA is big in France
People wear the t-shirts and don't even know what it stands for. They call it "UKLA", one word. But some of them do know. Anyway, sorry to cause so much indigestion...

Big in Japan
actually, UCLA outsells every university in Japan by a long shot. We are big in Japan. I know cuz I worked in BearWear for 3 years while at UCLA.  Anyone remember the bus loads of Japanese tourists coming to campus every Summer?? They'd get off their buses in front of Mens gym run to BearWear get their trinkets then get back on the bus. On occasion some would go to Royce and Powell to take pictures, but mostly back to the bus because they had a schedule to keep. Im sure it still happens.

We even have a store in Tokyo
maybe even more cities now. I almost forgot. That is how big we are there.

by DumpDorrell on May 26, 2007 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

UCLA
is huge in Asia.  Checkout this Daily Bruin release from 2005:
Over the last 20 years, 15 stores have opened in South Korea and five in mainland China. UCLA also has licensed manufacturers in Singapore, Mexico and parts of Europe.

UCLA makes $400,000 in royalties each year through its international licensing program, Holmes said.

I imagine there's a few more stores now that it's 2007 (like Japan).

I remember reading that in the paper
when it came out, but the impact didn't really sink in at the time. The picture alone implies that it's like a name brand over in Asia. I've never been into fashion, but this is one brand I can get behind.

japanese exchange student
Back in teh last 1980's, my parents hosted a Japanese exchange student for a month.  Top on her shopping list was going to UCLA where she must have bought 10ish shirts and another dozen UCLA trinkets.  It was nuts.  I asked her about USC and she had no idea what I was talking about.

Three or four of the shirts said, "UCLA Alumni" on them, and she had no idea what it meant - she just liked the shirt.

I remember
watching a Homer Simpson episode when the Simpsons were in Tokyo a UCLA shirt showed up in some context. Can't remember who was wearing it. But I remember it showed up in a Simpson episode.

by Nestor on May 27, 2007 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions

The shirt read
"UCLA Yankee Cola"

They were at an American themed restaurant in Japan, where all the tables were in the shape of the 50 states. The waiter greeted the Simpson family with a good old American "Howdy, gangsters".

by Tydides on May 27, 2007 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

That was it
Now all we need is someone to youtube that clip. Surely someone has all the Simpsons episodes here on BN?

Tasser
You got linked up on Deadspin.

Well done.

About the jackhammer

Want to know what the jackhammer is about? It's a reference to this music video by Benny Benassi:

Also the workout scene is a reference to this Eric Prydz video here:

These probably give a little insight to why the video is like it is. Both these tunes have been quite a big hits here in the Old Continent.

by pomppu on May 28, 2007 5:08 AM PDT reply actions

I've watched
both of these videos a few times now and have not found the UCLA connection.

I will continue watching them, over and over, pausing when necessary, until I see the kid in the UCLA b-ball jersey appear.

I think my time spent on this research is well worth it.  I recommend it to others, too.
