Around SBN: The cost of firing vs. the cost of retaining head coaches

On USA Today: Dorrell Must Win This Year

Looks like the word from BN is getting around!

Check out this post from In The Bleachers:

1. Karl Dorrell (UCLA) - Last year 7-6; UCLA Career Record 29-21. The Bruins' fans in Westwood have grown weary of year after year of mediocrity under Dorrell. I really believe that the win against USC last year saved his job, and allowed him to have a one-year reprieve. This season all the cards are in place as he has all of his recruits and 21 returning starters. The Bruins should be able to win their first four games, but the next three against Oregon State, Notre Dame, and Cal should set the tone for the rest of the season. For Dorrell to keep his job I think he needs to finish in at least the top 3 of the Pac-10 and get 9 to 10 wins. But to get a real feel how Bruins fans feel about Karl Dorrell head over to Bruins Nation . Dorrell is number 1 on their list in terms of coaches who have to win NOW.

Star-divide

Why is that post important?

Because it is now posted on USA Today.

Karl is not going to have anywhere to hide (okay may be at a local golf course).

Thank God not everyone in the national media is not as stupid and lazy as LA's local media. Although to be fair this came from bloggers proving once again bloggers tend to be few steps ahead of the MSM.

Go Bruins!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

GREAT find, bluestreet...
... and PROPS to Nestor for getting the ball rolling.

I'm not talking about getting the ball rolling on firing a man.  I NEVER want to see that happen, because it either means something REALLY bad has happened to elad to it, or it will lead to something bad because of it.

Rather, I congratulate Nestor and every other writer on this Board for fostering this little blog/ community and channeling a big old amount of UCLA love and enthusiasm into a means of possibly influencing the perception of our beloved student-athletes, both lcoally and nationally.

We believe our players -- in all sports -- are among the best in the nation.

And we want everyobdy to know it.

But, dang it, those low standards again!!!
Finish in the top 3 of the Pac 10?  9-10 wins?  Sorry, but a 3rd place finish followed by some farce-bowl doesn't do it for me in my books.

This would be Donahue all over again.  If enough Bruin fans are OK with that, then KD will outlast most of us.

Agreed
but heads will still explode over at BRO seeing the shout out to BN. And also I don't think Dorrell can win 9-10 games this season. And if he does he is gone to the NFL because he knows he will get exposed next season and he is going to face the same pressure again.

But whats important is word is getting out that UCLA fans are not happy with Dorrell.

Alright then, I feel better now
I'm just tired of outsiders telling us what is acceptable for UCLA, like 3rd place in the Pac10.

Some on BruinGold aren't happy...
... with the metnion of the Nation,  Oh well, I can agree to disagree, since I used to live on that Board before coming here.  A lot of those guys know football, but just disagree with our assessments.  No harm, no foul.

However, I found this somewhat amusing:

----------------------------
Now, fans of other college teams are going
to mosey on over to Bruin nation and will
think that how is how most bruin fans feel,
they will see that these supposed bruin fans
have posted pictures of Ucla's head coach
in terrible degrading images to make fun
of.
They will see the 'whining', bitchin,
moaning posters who have relatively nothing
positive to say about anything............

yeah.......way to go bruin nation, Im sure
that will help Ucla's image and will surely
help with recruiting too.....job well done.
--------------------------------
He has problems with terrible, degrading images?

The only ones that are arguably in that category are:

(1)  KD dancing in the big sombrero -- and I'm sorry, unless you're actually performing mariachi or folkorico music while wearing such a hat, a REALLY big hat on ANYONE makes for fun pictures anytime.  Doesn;t matter what kind of hat -- big ahts make for fun pictures.

(2)  Kool-Aid Karl.  That's just good old-fashioned satire.

And as for the degrading images blast, check out what he's got as the top picture on his post:

Have fun, folks.

That guy is an idiot
I went on Bruin Gold for one week. It was all I could take. I got a lot of responses from that poster, and he still never answered any of my questions. And I am convinced that many in that forum are not alumni yet vehemently defend KD's honor.

Now, not everyone there defends Dorrell but they all give him the benefit of the doubt. A lot of them do seem to think that this is a make or break year, but they are all unanimous in saying that we should shut up and not criticize the coach. Some knowledgeable folks there, but a lot of absurdity and Orwellian-style obedience.

Orwellian-style obedience at other boards
Probably a big reason why BN has grown so much in last couple of years.

You heard it on BruinGold first
It's BN's fault that the facts and numbers surrounding KD's tenure are negative. Those who choose to point these facts out are clearly the reason why our football team has underacheived the past 4 years. We are obviously breaking the unspoken rule of fandom that criticism is only warranted after a coach has been fired.

I believed all these things once...then I took a step outside and removed my tinfoil hat.

Last Year's Record
What is interesting about the USA Today article is that while Dorrell is number one on their list, he is also the only one of the five coaches that posted a record over .500 last year.  With the shout-out to BN, I think the writer, after looking at the Dorrell related posts on BN, got the message that Bruin fans are tired of mediocrity.

A close to .500 record and lower tier bowl game appearance are not acceptable after four years to build the program his way.  Ergo, number one on the hot seat.

If Dorrell had posted the record of the other 4 coaches on this list he would not be on the hot seat, he would (hopefully) be gone already.

BruinGold
They're just KD addicts who are in denial.  Remember that the 1st step to recovery is admission.

When your hated rival, loves your HC so much so that they do not want him to ever leave, what the f**k does that tell you?  Hmmm...... Just like I loved Hackett because he was our #1 weapon at that time, so is KD to SC.

If they were in charge, we'd still have Lavin.

I have lost count of how many who now say
"...back then, when I was a Lavin critic..."

If they are to be believed, there was not a single Lavin supporter back then.
