Seattle Paper Ridicules Dorrell

The Seattle Press Intelligence picks UCLA to finish 5th in the conference (a finish that will get Dorrell fired). And check out the reason it proffered for picking Oregon ahead (4th place) ahead of UCLA:

UCLA will have an experienced quarterback and returns nearly all its starters -- 10 on O, 10 on D -- but, save for an upset over USC last year, the Bruins haven't played particularly inspired football for Karl Dorrell or his revolving door of assistants. Karl Dorrell - can't even get any respect in the Pac-10. No wonder fans from other teams dig him so much (just like Lavin).

GO BRUINS.

Respect
As we all know, you have to earn respect and KD has (obviously) not earned it from more than a few folks who are satisfied that he runs a clean program and goes to a bowl game every year.  Nevermind that a .500 record will send any team to a Nutso Bowl each year.

The above quote from the Seattle paper slams KD for not inspiring his players, which I think is true.  Can anyone else think of a coach at any school who is or was as laid-back (comatose) as KD who had great success?  This is not a rhetorical question.  It seems to me that the  college HCs who seem to do the best have some fire in them.

Even Terry Donohue was more "fiery" than KD, although I doubt anyone has called TD fiery.  It's all relative, I suppose.

I hate to say it, but even when KD has gotten excited on the sidelines, his emotion seems sort of "forced" on his part.

What if...
What if UCLA finishes 11-1, loses to USC in a close one, finishes 2nd in the Pac-10, but finishes ranked in the top 10?  Do you want a new HC at that point?

by MrGray on Jul 19, 2007 6:33 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That would likely result in a BCS berth
which in my opinion would have to be considered a successful season for KD, so long as his team doesn't lay an egg in that game.

And if it didn't
It wouldn't be Dorrell's fault.

I've got another "what if"
What if UCLA finishes with 8 or 9 wins, beats SUC, but (obviously) misses out on the BCS and finishes ranked outside the top 10. Do YOU want a new HC at that point?

by Tydides on Jul 19, 2007 6:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
I honestly feel like unless Dorrell wins a NC or comes within a play or two of getting to that game, he should be gone.  Not because I think we should be winning NCs every year, but that I think any success he has is a fluke.  Like someone said below, I want a coach that can sustain success.  Even if it means being .500 against a USC program that is ripping up the college football world, as long as we're in the  BCS hunt going into that game year after year, that's fine with me.

its been so effing long
since we even were there that some folks dont think its possible.  Its sad ... and torture.

11-1 and top 10 finish
and Dorrell would meet our expectations (given all the fortuitous circumstances that happen upon our team this year); 12-0 and a NC would exceed our expectations.

So I would say that if either 1. KD meets expectations or obviously exceeds them, he has earned the right to stay on as HC.

Now your question is "Do you want a new head coach at that point?" And my answer would be "yes", simply from the fact that I have already made up my mind that KD is not the coach I want for this team long term.

I want a UCLA headcoach who
is able to SUSTAIN excellence among the ranks of college football.  Currently the only thing KD is able to sustain is a constant stream of questions regarding:  what the hell is he doing?

The reporters
and fans have to be awake to launch a constant stream of questions at him.

What if...
Dorrell won only 8 games, got fired, and all of these vaunted recruits for 2008 get a good new coach who turns them into all they can be?  Oh, to dream!

What if...
These recruits actually signed on to play for UCLA and not specifically for KD?

To take it further, what if they signed on, knowing that KD has a good chance of being fired and the next coach will be a monumental improvement?

What if ...
It seems to me that for the last several football seasons I wake up to Sonny and Cher singing "I Got You Babe," and then I go watch the groundhog come out of his burrow.

What if Mr. Dorrell does things exactly the way he has done them in the past?  What if he then throws out some cliches about corners and learning?  What if the Dorrellistas talk about what a fine job he is doing?  What if Mr. Guerrero smiles and says nothing?

When does "Groundhog Day" end?

Or what if we had a real coach who knew what he was doing?

What if
the only person not "improving" and "growing" each year is KD?

well...
obviously his golf game is getting better...can the season start already
