Unbelievable: Eric Scott Arrested

UCLA Coach Arrested For Allegedly Burglarizing Home

Wide receiver coach Eric Scott was one of three burglary suspects arrested Tuesday in Norwalk.

Suzanne Rico reports

CBS Report

Not sure how to comment on something like this.

I do know, if the allegations are true, it's bad. It's bad because it's a crime, naturally. It's bad because the season is about to start and UCLA could lose it's wide receivers coach. It's bad because Scott is a key recruiter, or so I've read.

It's just bad.

So, let's hope it's not true.

ADDED THOUGHTS: The reality is, if (and I'm going to keep saying "if") these allegations prove true, it's going to be something that sticks to our program for a long time.

And because we portray our program as the "clean" program and because some of our fans and supporters never fail to lay the thug/criminal tag on other programs, the situation is rife with sad irony.

UPDATE - N: Just last week Rich Perleman posted this note in attempt to rebut the argument Dorrell is one of the worst coaches in the NCAA:

(2) Lack of trouble.

Dorrell may have changed a lot of his assistant coaches, but after the cataclysmic handicap-parking scandal that destroyed the 1999 football season, his players have pretty much stayed off the police blotter. And reports are that he is recruiting fairly high-character high school players. This aspect of his tenure should not be overlooked; it certainly isn’t inside the Morgan Center.
Also from the same blog Scott was hailed as Dorrell's ace recruiter.

UPDATE II - N: Dohn with some early details:

UCLA receivers coach Eric Scott is facing suspension, and a possible firing, after he and two other men were arrested and changed with felony residential burglary early Tuesday morning, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
Scott was booked at 1:07 p.m. He posted a $5,000 bond and was released at 9:25 p.m., according to an arrest report.
"He was brought to Norwalk station and booked on residential burglary and bonded out,’’ said Tera White, the LASD’s station watch commander.
"Deputies were called (to a house). It was a call for service. It wasn’t an observation on deputies’ part. They were called there by neighbors.’’
White said two other men, Jesus DeAlba and Timothy Williams, were also arrested with Scott, 32, was hired as UCLA’s receivers coach in March, and was making a big impact in recruiting.
Dorrell should put Scott on "paid leave" immediately until more details come out.

UPDATE III - A: One word of caution: It must have been about a year ago when Maurice Jones-Drew was momentarily implicated in a criminal situation at the Denny's in Westwood. MDJ was completely exonerated. Wrong place, wrong time, if I recall correctly. Not saying that's the situation with Eric Scott. I'm not naive. And if this turns out to be true, I'll be the second person calling for his immediate dismissal. (Nestor will be the first.) If Scott is guilty of burglary, it could be the beginning of the end for the entire regime. But news of the arrest is only hours old at this moment (10:01 Pacific Time). More details will shed more light on the situation.

UPDATE IV -N:Obviously we are going to hear more in the coming hours. However, I do believe right now Dorrell and Morgan Center should take immediate action and put Scott on "paid leave" (unless there has been some kind of dramatic misunderstanding) and keep him away from Morgan Center and all football facilities just like Vick has been instructed to stay away from the Falcons.

UPDATE V -N: No comment from Morgan Center as folks are still "gathering information".

UPDATE VI -M: The first set of MSM stories are starting to trickle out. Here's the LA Times piece. Also, the OC Register points out that DG has the power to do the right thing if the allegations against Scott prove accurate:

The first-year coach could be suspended or potentially fired, under terms of his contract.

A standard contract for assistant coaches at UCLA includes a clause that states: '... Acts which may be considered a breach of this agreement include, but are not limited to, acts of dishonesty, theft or misappropriation of university property, fighting on the job, insubordination, acts endangering others or other serious misconduct.''

Upon any such breach, Athletic Director Dan Guerrero could terminate the contract.

UPDATE VII - N: Per Dohn authorities are trying to figure out who lived in the house where the alleged robbery took place. The case could be sent to the DA's office tomorrow.

Wow!!
If there is a shred of validity to this story Scott should be immediately kicked out of the program.

And then Dorrell will have some splaining to do.

So much for "cleaning up" the program.

Wow
I guess this means we aren't paying our assistants as much as we thought.

by CAJason80 on Jul 25, 2007 9:22 AM PDT reply actions

Simple question
What kind of background check did Dorrell run before bringing in Scott on board?

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Unbelievable
Agreed ... he should be at least put on paid leave from the start, and of course if there is any truth to it after a UCLA investigation then he should be fired ... end of story.  This raises so many issues one cant even begin to comprehend.  Obviously this will impact team psyche ... the WR corps and offense ... recruiting. And once again, we have to questions Karl Dorrell's hiring decisions.  This is terrible.

by DumpDorrell on Jul 25, 2007 9:25 AM PDT reply actions

Totally agree
He should be put on leave immediately.

We shouldn't handle this the same way Pom Pom handles his issues.

Scott needs to be off campus now.

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

If there is any shred of truth...
...to these allegations, Scott needs to be removed from his position immediately. If his recruits feel that they need to go too, than so be it.

Way to bring in those solid character guys Dorrell.

WHAAAAT?
This doesn't even make sense. I'm speechless.

by tasser10 on Jul 25, 2007 9:31 AM PDT reply actions

I'm with you
Burglary?  This is shocking.  Why would someone who is at least making $100,000(that's around what they get paid, right?) break into houses.  This could put the team back considerably.  We'll give him the benefit of the doubt but if the police captured and arrested Scott in the act, then there isn't much to consider.

by bruin95 on Jul 25, 2007 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Strange...
I just tried Google News for "eric scott" arrested; ucla coach arrested; and simply "eric scott"

No hits on this story yet. Why would someone with everything to lose do something so stupid?

by Calchas on Jul 25, 2007 9:46 AM PDT reply actions

This is unbelievable
A football coach at a big-name school burglarizing a home?

If guilty, he deserves everything he has coming to him.

What will KD's defenders in Romper Romp say now?  All they could say was how "clean" KD ran his program.

This is just terrible.  What an embarrassment.

by Barnes2JJ on Jul 25, 2007 9:48 AM PDT reply actions

Burglary...
...doesn't necessarily mean creeping through a window with a ski mask to steal a TV. Its any breaking and entering of a residence with the intent to commit a felony. So we can't assume he was trying to steal something.

by Ajax on Jul 25, 2007 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

That's true
Although I think, technically, he was still "burglarizing a home" as opposed to "burglarizing a car" or something else.

Frankly, if he did commit burglary, I hope it was just to steal something versus commit a more heinous act.

It's all speculation right now.

A terrible story.  I hope it is a huge mistake.

by Barnes2JJ on Jul 25, 2007 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Some apologists
Are speculating that this could be a case of domestic dispute.

In my book even in that case he should be FIRED (if there is any truth to the fact that he may have been breaking and entering to get his stuff out from his ex's house). That kind of behavior should never be acceptable as well.

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Wow, I get into work...
and this is the first thing I see on BN. Unbelievable. Just unreal. Can't wait to get more details, but if this is true, just an incredibly distracting way to head into the season...

Hopefully with the NBA ref, Michael Vick and barry bonds stories still circulating pretty loudly, this won't get much national attention.

Acutally
if there is any shred of truth to this story it needs to get blown up.  And Dorrell needs to be put on the spot. So if this story is true I want it to get all kinds of attention.

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

this is really insane
this guy got the break of a lifetime to get a position coaching job at such a huge profile program like UCLA, with next to no experience. He was making an assistant coaching salary at a high school.  Now he had to be making close to $100K, with huge career potential, and he he's been getting great press. This guy should have been at home in bed before 9 pm every night counting his blessings. Or, at least, if not in bed, at home watching film studying plays and making his first year a raging success. With all the returning starters he could have ridden the wave. 2 days before Media Day when his boss was going to be hit with all sorts of questions this guy allegedly is out robbing houses.  WTF??? This is insanity.

by DumpDorrell on Jul 25, 2007 9:58 AM PDT reply actions

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

this obviously calls into question his recruiting successes. I always thought there was something suspect about this guy getting so much so fast. All these recruits attributed to him, when he had never spent a moment on the sidelines??!! What did he promise these recruits?? How did he have such influence?? Too many questions ... this is insane.

by DumpDorrell on Jul 25, 2007 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeap
I had the same feeling too. It was just too weird in the way we were reeling in all these recruits despite the sh!tty product Dorrell put on the field.

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions

WTF?
Are you kidding me??? This is the quality of coaches Dorrell is able to attract to a marquee program like UCLA? Having burned through God knows how many assistant coaches in the last 5 years, does he have no one left except thugs to bring into the fold? What kind of program is this guy running here? Burgulary? Tell me the guy got nabbed for speeding or unpaid parking tickets, hell, I'll even take a minor possession charge or even a simple theft, but burgulary? I can't imagine he was doing it to supplement his income; what was he looking for inside the home? Drugs? Weapons? Did he have any weapons on him when he got nabbed? This is bad folks....real bad.

Fellow Bruins and fans
This is no longer merely mocking KD.  This incident is on an entirely different level.  I would hope that everyone refrains from judgment until all the facts are in.  I, for one, hope that it is merely a misunderstanding and that there is a plausible explanation for the allegation against Scott.

In the end, I hope we all could return to making KD's incompetence the butt of our mocking, and this episode blows over with Scott cleared of all charges.

by bluegold on Jul 25, 2007 10:19 AM PDT reply actions

Bluegold - the voice of reason
Last I checked it was innocent until proven guilty - nobody knows what did or did not happen nor the circumstances surrounding this matter.

If the allegations are true then E. Scott has to go.  But I agree with both Nestor and Bluegold, lets look at the facts before lynching this man and throwing the whole program down the drain.

We have enough issues with this program - but the bottom line is regardless of what happens here the expectations for the program should not change and we still need to win.

He shouldn't be aloud to set foot on campus
until this clears up one way or another. If Dorrell et al need to meet with him do it off campus. No contact with players or other personnel, outside of his bosses and their charges, should be allowed. Obviously, he could be completely innocent and this could be a bizarre misunderstanding ... but right now the program needs to distance itself from him until there is substantially more clarity.

agreed in part
Before making any final judgement on the man, we should allow Scott's case to make it through the courts, see what actually happened on Monday night. If he did act as the reports say, boot him.

I trust that I am not alone in saying that Dorrell's first words at tomorrow's media day (if not sooner) should be to the effect of "Eric Scott has been placed on administrative leave, effective immediately. This leave will relieve Coach Scott of his duties as assistant coach at UCLA pending the outcome of recent events. The bruin nation wishes Coach Scott a prompt and fair resolution to the charges pending against him"

And yes, it seriously brings into question his recruiting methods. But right now, I am waiting to hear a statement, from his lawyer, from Dorrell, and from the Morgan Center. What a dumbass. Plus this is going to provide fodder to the U$C fans who've been taking it from us about their thug program...

by tasser10 on Jul 25, 2007 11:25 AM PDT reply actions

Two points
  1.  We all agree that he is innocent until proven guilty (and I know you agree).  That should go without saying.
  2.  If he is guilty, and he was trying to commit a thuggish criminal act, then he is a thug and we should take our lumps.  We can't bash the SuCsters for their criminals without acknowledging our own (if he is indeed a criminal).
If he is proven to be a thug, then let us be different than SuC and denounce him, and fire him.  We are different than the excuse-makers over at South Central and it is at times like this when we need to prove how we are different.

Rumors on other board is that E. Scott was attempting to take back property belonging to him that was in his ex-girlfriends home.

Am I saying that this is what happened - No, I'm just reporting what is being said elsewhere.  I'm also not saying this justifies his actions.  But we also don't know what if any conversation took place between he and his ex if this is true and we need to wait for the facts before drawing a conclusion.

This is still America last I checked.

Also - we still need to remember regardless of what falls out here - the expectations don't change.

Uhm
If that is the "truth" he still needs to be fired.

Scott is not some random Joe Schome. He is an assistant coach at a big time university. He has to use better judgment than that. Even if this result was some kind of "domestic dispute" KD needs to be fired.

Think about it. If a SuCster did the same thing we'd be all over him.

KD will need to set an example and still fire him if that kind of scenario was true.

by bluestreet on Jul 25, 2007 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

If that explanation happens to be true, it is in no way an excuse for his actions. There are other ways to try getting your stuff back than, oh, breaking into a house in broad daylight. If nothing else, as has been said already, this shows very bad judgement, especially for a man whose job is coaching young adults.

Also, How the hell does he have the free time to drive to Norwalk in the middle of a weekday, a month before the season begins??

by bruinhoo on Jul 25, 2007 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with Bluestreet
He needs to be fired just for being in the headlines with a story like that.  Hes also right that if a trOJie did this, we'd be all over them.  In fact even if the trOJie turned out to be innocent, we'd still be all over him.  Let's not be hypocrites.  Toss Scott now.  Let the thugs in south central take him.  He'll be at home robbing houses down there.

He was arrested at 12:30 pm.
according to his booking info on the LA Sheriff's website. Could this be an odd time for a burglary? Perhaps.  Or, maybe it was the best time as people have to work.  There could be some explanation for Scott to be there coming forth that may sound somewhat understandable. Regardless, it obviously calls into question his judgment, which to me could be enough grounds for termination.

I URGE REASON AND CAUTION HERE.
Speaking as one of the many attorneys in the Nation, allow me to emphasize reason and caution over snap judgments.

Until clear facts come out to supplant unsubstnaitated rumors, we know close to nothing about the facts of this case.

What do we know?  Apparently, only what Dohn put in his blog.

That's it.

Dohn has been a reliable and accurate reporter, but the information is still very new, and may likely be in flux.

If, if, IF!!! Scott has committed a crime and is properly convicted,  or is held liable in civil court, then by all means have at him.

If, if, IF!!! however, all charges against Scott are dropped, then by all menas he should be treated fairly.

Disagree in part
Obviously, this is breaking news and we need to exercise some caution and remember the presumption of innocence.

That said, the presumption of innocence is criminal concept, and doesn't apply to how we must, or necessarily should, judge someone whose put themselves and the university in such a terrible situation.

So, unless the reporting is just flat out wrong, I frankly don't feel the need to wait for a conviction before disapproving of his conduct and calling for his immediate removal (paid leave) from any contact with the program.

I understand your thinking, and I am sensitive to what you're saying.  But, really, the difference between us and some other schools is that we don't react to these incidents by saying that the girl really wanted it (Sanchez) or explain it away because the assailants dad was seriously ill (Rey Maualuga) or ignore it because noone got hurt (Reggie Bush).

In the eyes of the courts, I hope Scott is treated fairly.  In the eyes of some very disappointed Bruin fans, I hope he catches hell.  Just say'n.

Who's going to go over to conquest cornickles, acknowledge that Scott is a Bruin assistant coach, and then bend over and grab the ankles?

Oh how they must be howling with glee over there.  Our ostensibly untouchable quality - a clean program without out thugs - turns out be be wrong.  Plus, Coach Scott does not have (... umm, let's see what phrase to use - I've got it) a "support program" like they have at figueroa tech.  By this time, fifty slick defense attorneys would have had the case kicked out twelve times over.

Talk about disappointing!  Sheesh.

by Fox 71 on Jul 25, 2007 1:22 PM PDT reply actions

Gloating?
I haven't seen much gloating over at CC, but I am sure they, well, appreciate the irony of the situation.

Plus, even though it sux, it is kinda funny that a coach can get popped for burglary, in Norwalk no less. Too bad Coach Scott doesn't apparently own the Norwalk PD.

Ultimately, though, this is hardly an indictment of the program. Each program, as I have consistently maintained, has its share of thugs/idiots who do foolish and occasionally criminal acts. Of course, what makes this unusual is that it's a coach accused of the criminality. But this does not detract from the underlying point. As long as KD and the athletic department act appropriately-and appropriate would be to place Scott on leave until this is sorted out with no team duties, regardless of the undoubtedly painful effect-then we can all take some comfort in the fact that our school handled the matter fairly and did the right thing.

The difference between UCLA and some other schools is not that we don't have our share of miscreants, but that we punish them appropriately.

There's no inconsistency
It would be one thing if we were attempting to cover this up and make excuses for it. Not one person here on BN has done this. THAT's something a trOJan would do. We demand accountability, and want people to dig deeper to get to the bottom of this. The trOJans would rather bury their heads in the sand.

You're right, this is not an indictment of the program...yet. If he is found to be guilty, then it will be.

There is an E. Scott who lives in Norwalk...
Less than one mile from the 11600 block of Pioneer.  Looks like both areas are predominantly small, single-family homes.  Take a look at Zillow.

Could be someone Eric knew, had lent property to and was he was reclaiming it?

Or maybe he actually burglarized a neighbor.

SAD.

by JohnnyBruin on Jul 25, 2007 1:40 PM PDT reply actions

Sad is right
I'd actually be surprised of Scott was Bergerizing, er, I'm mean, burglarizing some house in Norwalk to line his pockets.  They aren't exactly going to be filming the next Ocean's movie there.

It seems much more likely that there will be some "explanation."  (Totally speculating here.)  Maybe it's retrieving property at the ex's house; or "stealing back" items stolen from a friend, or any number of things.  But, unless, it's something like broke into house to save tiny baby from molten lava, I think the guy has some serious splaining to do.

by Menelaus on Jul 25, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Do the RIGHT thing
Not because we want to distance ourselves from SUC w/ regards to discipline, but because it's the RIGHT thing to do.

It's not as if we haven't had brushes with the law under KD before, if you remember the Hale and Ward incidents, and the Medlock incident. The difference between us and SUC is how we handle situations like these. It would be ideal if we never had to deal with these things, but that's not the reality. As it was during the previous two cases, we need to let our justice system decide what happened. But as in the previous two cases, I expect a removal of Scott from the program until this case has been settled.

And as a preemptive strike against all the SUC trolls, remember this: pointing out others mistakes doesn't make your own any less glaring. We demand accountability from our coaches and players. That's more than I can say for morally bankrupt, excuse-making SUC fans.

Wow
I've gotta say that if these allegations are true, this is exponentially worse than the handicap-parking scandal or any of the other shenanigans that occurred under Toledo.

Coaches and professionals should be held to a higher standard. Kids 18-21 years of age, let's face it, are going to do stupid things. But for a coach to commit a crime, whether it be burglary or trespassing, whatever, is UNACCEPTABLE.

If off-field issues are what did Toledo in, this should be no different for KD. He hired Scott. He should be held accountable.

It will be interesting to see how all this shakes out. Right now, it's just plain embarrassing.

Gotta Disagree
The parking scandal has two elements that pointed to a total breakdown in the oversight of the football program.  It was not just one individual involved but many and it appeared that if the administrators of the football program, from the head coach on down, did not know what was happening, they certainly should have.

This Eric Scott situation is about one person who has allegedly made a very bad decision.  A decision that, if true, reflects poorly on the individual, but does not impugn the integrity of the entire program.

No
Eric Scott's actions is not just "about one person."

Eric Scott is a KD hire.

He has been focal point of all the hype around KD's recruiting success this season.

I have been told Eric is like "family" to KD.

There were some concerns about Eric's background before he was brought aboard. If there is any shred of truth to these allegations not only should be booted off the team for good, but we will also have to examine KD's pathetic record of hiring and firing.

Keep in mind he also brought in an assistant coach who had a public record of domestic violence.

This is not just about one stupid moron's action if there is any shred of truth to this disturbing allegation.

more info?
This isn't meant to be an in your face question, but rather one to fill me in. Can you point to the public record of domestic violence and what were the nature of the concerns when Eric Scott was hired?

Thanks

I remember that one
Coach Wristen (new head coach of Upper Lower Inside Outide Puelbo Colorado State) had an arrest or conviction, don't remember which, for spousal abuse.

This was a long time ago, and I know of no evidence to suggest that there has been any recurrence in the past 15 years for Coach W.

I am all for giving people a second chance.  I was given a second chance after a DUI 16 years ago, and have not had any alcohol since.  I hope that Coach Wristen got the message.

Two different posters on BRO
are saying that word out of the Morgan Center is that it's a misunderstanding and his lawyer is saying the LA County Sheriff made a mistake and it should be cleared up in a couple days.  Hope it's true.

Well, finally the definitive word
Coach Scott's lawyer says it's all a misunderstanding.  If a lawyer says it, it must be true, so that's good news.  No one who ever repped a person accused of anything has ever said that his client was "absolutely 100% not guilty" unless it were true.

I know when I see the actual quote from the lawyers it will say something like "if the glove don't fisunderstanding, it's all a misunderstanding."

The only better news is that this comes from not one but two BRO posters.  BRO has a well-earned reputation for dogged integrity, no matter what, when it comes to Mr. Dorrell and anything that reflects on his capabilities.  Maybe the quote from the lawyer will actually be, "He did it, and I'm pleading him guilty."

where do you infer
a definitive word?  I said I hope it's true to leave it open to speculation.

There is a witness
That has Scott and the other two forcing their way into the house.  The police found them with items from the house on their person.  One of the people that Scott was with is suspected to be involved with a break-in at his former school.

Maybe Scott is innocent, but it sure doesn't look good.  His lawyer probably isn't a great source of non-spun facts.  We all know how much the truth matters to lawyers.
