Daily trOJan strikes out wrt McNair

I'd like to credit BruinEric for pointing me in the direction of this LOL-tastic DT article.

It was only a matter of time before the half-wits at the daily trOJan opened their mouths regarding the McNair issue and exposed to the world how little they understand about...well...everything.

Someone call the "Whaaaaaambulance" because the DT's editors have a severe case of butthurt:

Bloggers at BruinsNation.com, arguably with Vick in mind, decided to dig up dirt on USC running backs coach Tom (SIC) McNair, who was convicted twice in the 1990s on charges concerning the mistreatment of dogs.

Really? We "just decided" to dig up some dirt on McNair. Randomly. Out of the Blue. Well, besides this:

You're just jealous

That our coach doesn't have convicts on his staff.

Bitch as much as you want, when you look at it objectively, he is a good person, and a good coach.

Good luck BN.  You'll need it.

That's right, the impetus behind the "investigation" (read: Google search) was a cowardly driveby posting by a trOJan nitwit. But don't let the facts get in the way trOJan editors, it's not like you do your jobs well. Strike One.

BruinsNation took a sports rivalry to an inappropriate level, bringing back McNair's already public convictions, forcing him to deal with issues that should remain in the past. The site practiced poor journalism as little - if any- good can be done by the resurfacing of McNair's actions.

I see, so it is inappropriate to point out where a trOJan in his driveby posting is factually incorrect. The facts are that with even a minimal amount of research on how this all started (many blogs carrying this story have referenced the fact that this was started by a "rival poster"), the DT could have saved themselves the embarrassment of taking their false assumption and running with it. You know what THAT's called? Bad Journalism. Ironic. Strike Two.

BruinsNation has used the media frenzy fueled by the Vick case to take advantage of McNair and has accused the Trojans of acting inhumanely by employing a man who was convicted of a crime, as if no coaches at UCLA have ever themselves been convicted.

The Bruins brought the rivalry to an inappropriate level. The great rivalry between the Bruins and Trojans has worked so well and lasted so long because of a mutual respect between the teams.

For the most part, both teams understand that the rivalry is to remain on the field.

Nice job in the first paragraph to attempt to shift the focus of this to BN when in reality, the scope of this story is how the trOJan "family" will react to this. Based on their silence with regards to White Nation, I'm not holding my breath that they'll do the responsible thing and demand accountability. It's a shame too, because BN, the internet, and the LA Times really did their jobs for them, digging up all the dirt from an outsiders perspective. I'd like to also add how funny it is that the rivalry is supposed to remain "on the field" just because it's convenient for them. If you don't like to hear about how your football team is comprised of rapists, thugs, dogfighters, and how your student body is made up of baby-dumpers (read: Murderers, and I'm not even talking about OJ), then don't recruit/accept these people. If you do, then it's your cross to bear, and no amount of messenger shooting is going to distract from the stink coming out of South Central. Strike Three.

And the DT goes down swinging.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Poor poor babies
rivalry is to remain on the field.
Surely these SCumbags expressed that opinion when TrOJies were snitching about Foster's SUV?

Oh by the way Toejams, its Todd McNair not Tom.

God what a bunch of dumb losers.

I also noticed that
Either they don't know their own coaches' name or they think that "dd" is pronounced with a silent "d" and an "m". Perhaps a snark-tastic (SIC) is in order?

Done.

I highly recommend
SUCLink's whiny apology to the trOJan family for starting all of this. I think you know where to find it. It's pure comedy, of the "I'm taking my ball and going home" variety. One can only hope that this is his final drama filled "internet goodbye". Kind of like THIS ONE.
I'm done, officially, completely, and totally.

Good day.

I thought being done implied that there would be no further posts...like the one in the diary.

Nothing will happen to McNair
That picture of the dog that escaped from McNair's house is horrific.  I would hope that kind of animal cruelty isn't rewarded by continued employment at Figueroa Tech.
Unfortunately, nothing will happen to McNair because he knows where the dead bodies are buried with respect to Bushgate.  The Yahoo article that first broke the Bushgate story specifically mentioned him as the SC coach who knew that Bush and his family were receiving improper benefits.  SC can't afford to let him go b/c as long as he's there, he won't spill the beans.
Besides, any school that welcomes a double homicide killer to its football practices probably could care less about cruelty to animals.

The worst "journalism" in a while
It's one thing for average Trojan fans to try and blow this off -- but the Daily Trojan is supposed to be run by journalists. This was an editorial, written by the editors who run the paper -- not just a column written by a crazy columnist. And they have a journalism school too, which just shows how useless those are.

Real journalists hold the people they report on accountable, and there's two major issues here they could be investigating and asking:

  1. Should someone who was involved in dogfighting be in charge of mentoring young adults?
  2. The fans who pay a lot of money to go see their team play deserve to know who they're paying to see -- it's up to them to decide if they want to support a dogfighter or not.
The Daily Trojan doesn't seem to care about either issue, while here at Bruins Nation, most of us were outraged when we heard about the Eric Scott case. Many of us wanted either Scott gone or Dorrell for hiring him in the first place. Almost all of us at the very least wanted more information about it and demanded transparency. If it came out that any of our coaches were involved with dogfighting, I'd for sure want to know all about it and I'd probably want him fired -- I'm guessing most people here at BN would too.

In this editorial, The Daily Trojan fails to understand what journalism is. I don't know how to blockquote things, but this was the first paragraph:

"The purpose of news is to inform its readership of new, relevant events. Good journalists report with progress in mind, but more often than necessary, news organizations beat stories to the ground, serving no good to the public."

That paragraph is so wrong in this situation on so many levels. News doesn't have to be new (professional newspapers investigate things that happened years ago all the time), it just has to be either relevant or important. Which this was. There is a huge nationwide discussion going on right now about dogfighting, and before Meriones uncovered it, a connection had never been made between Todd McNair's involvement in dogfighting and the fact that he's currently a coach at USC.

Good journalists do report with progress in mind, and good journalists would have reported this story because it's becoming clear that we as a nation despise dogfighting now more than ever and deserve to know who's been involved, how they were punished, and what's being done to make sure dogfighting doesn't happen again.

News organizations beat things to the ground ... how did that happen here? It hadn't been reported that a current USC coach was involved with dogfighting until BN uncovered it -- how is breaking a story beating it into the ground?

As has been pointed out already by Tydides and others, the Daily Trojan got a lot of their facts wrong in reporting how the story was broken here. So they don't do their homework and they don't even know what journalism is -- why are they running a newspaper?

Thank you
You spared me from writing several paragraphs with that great post.

You guys have it all wrong
It's the wrong guy.  The guy who was convicted of torturing animals is Todd McNair.  justsc's coach is Tom McNair.  And I know, 'cause I read it in the Daily trOJan.  So obviously, it's a case of mistaken identity.  Todd McNair is probably the real killer, and OJ is searching madly for him.  It's just a coincidence that the Tom McNair who is the trOJan coach has a similar name.

Plus, why are you guys getting so worked up?  Nothing matters except what happens on the field.  I know that, too, 'cause I read it in the Daily trOJan.  That's why all this talk of bu$hgate and White Nation is so irrelevant.  As long as the trOJans keep winning, it's all about what's on the field that counts.

Yeah, I really admire the trOJans.  I want my children to go there for sure.  That's some great family.

I'm so tired of 'SC's crying.
I still have to hear Trojans (wrongly) saying that Justin Medlock ditched the scene of the accident when in reality he found the CHP officer.
I still have to hear about the handicap "scandal."

But bring up Rey Rey the barbarian or Todd (aka "Tom") McNair and all of a sudden we've crossed the line.

Of course the LA Slimes doesn't want to look at both sides of it. That's why it is the FOX News of Sports Pages.

War a big dog mauling McNair.

deadspin commenters are having a field day here
The Daily Trojan newspaper only likes people digging up stories when it's about someone other than their assistant coaches.

Whether you favor the Daily Trojan or BruinsNation, I think we can all agree that this editorial reads like it was written by a ninth-grader.

BY  BEING SVEN  AT 08/30/07 04:55 PM

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly named the USC running backs coach as Tom McNair. His name is Todd McNair. The Daily Trojan regrets the error.

The purpose of news is to inform its readership of new, relevant events. Good journalists report...

Good journalists? Good journalists don't fuck up common first names.

Y  HEAVYPETTINGZOO  AT 08/30/07 05:17 PM

Some other whiners that the Daily Trojan wishes would shut the fuck up:

Holocaust survivors
Mi Lai Massacre survivors
Desiree Washington (seriously, Tyson did his time, stop bitching)
Brynn Cameron
Pit Bulls

These Trojans are such a joke...
