Yet Another Recruiting Advantage for UCLA

You know, some may think that it's already just too darn unfair.

After all, UCLA has practically everything that a young athlete (male or female) could want: beautiful weather; a picturesque campus; outstanding academics; great social life; great access to beach and slopes...

PLUS, the sheer abundance of beautiful people roaming the hills of Westwood.

Well, folks, we may have kicked up that abundance even more.  Take a look at who's been taking Intro to Western Civ during the summer:

Shakira may get high grades in singing and swiveling her hips, but what about ancient Western history? For the past month, the Colombian pop star has attended a class at the University of California, Los Angeles, called "Introduction to Western Civilization: Ancient Civilizations from Prehistory to Circa A.D. 843."

Dare I say this to U$C?

Yes, I dare:  SCOREBOARD.

You know there may be only one thing on this earth better than being a UCLA alum.

And that's being a UCLA student.

Heard about this
on the radio on the way to work. Let's spread some of the love to South Campus shall we? :-(

All the same, I have to say...
... that while Shakira makes a lovely UCLA co-ed, I'm already living the dream.

I married an absolutely lovely, smart, Latina, former UCLA co-ed who stuck with me all through law school and out-screams me at football games.

Yep.  Life is good.

I had no choice
but to bump this post.

Forgot about the Alba...
... although I don't know if she's still dating Mike Warren's kid.

Either way, though, we have had recent press pieces this year covering Shakira taking a UCLA class -- a HUMANITIES GE, no less! -- and Alba toting a blue and gold b-ball during the Tournament.

And $C?  I think the last "starlet" mentioned in the context of UCLA was when Whine-art was rumored to be dating Paris Hilton.

Niiice.

It's the marriage made in heaven
Matt Leinart and Paris Hilton.  I can just see Matt taking her home to meet his parents.  "Mom, dad, here's the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with."  And when she takes him home to meet her parents - "Mom, dad, here's the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.  No, we haven't released a sex tape on the internet yet.  He was busy being a great dad the day I had the studio booked."

I can't imagine people who deserve each other as much as those two.

Obvious correction
That should say the last starlet mentioned in the context of U$C, NOT our beloved alma mater.

One more for the academic scoreboard...
...just to make sure we give a little love to South Campus.

Many of you may have alreadys een this, but Newsweek/ msnbc did a nice article last month on our own math-whiz alum Danica McKellar (formerly "Winnie" of "The Wonder Years" and all grown up now) and her new book "Math Doesn't Suck":

"When girls see the antics of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, they think that being fun and glamorous also means being dumb and irresponsible," says McKellar. "But I want to show them that being smart is cool. Being good at math is cool. And not only that, it can help them get what they want out of life."

Imagine that: a UCLA alum wanting to encourage young people -- especially young girls -- that being SMART is cool.

Gotta love it.

I had a crush
on Winnie way back when, and she looks pretty darn good still.  And she has a good head on her shoulders.

Nice find.

From Wikipedia
As an undergraduate, she coauthored a scientific paper with Professor Lincoln Chayes and fellow student Brandy Winn. The paper proves a theorem in mathematical physics that could be called the "Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem".

I remembered hearing something about her having a theorem named after her, which is pretty damn awesome.

Danica was a pretty cool
in person.

IIRC she was in ADPi. Ran into her in couple of parties around Westwood. Very cool, down to earth person. I am glad she is doing well. She deserves it.

Now Fred Savage on the other hand from what I have heard from good sources was a total scumbag (during mid 90s) when he was attending Stanford.

I worked Sproul during her Frosh Orientation...
... and we fielded a lot of juvenile crank calls during her stay. By all accounts, though, she was a pleasant, patient (esp. since we had a ton of grade-school and junior high-age sports camps at the dorms at the same time), bright kid.

Kicking myself for not posting this as a separate Diary a couple weeks ago.  Definitely proud to have this young lady as a UCLA alum.

I kept running into her
at the Bomb Shelter...while getting my chicken teriyaki bowl... And I always asked myself what the heck she was doing on South Campus! I found out later that she was a Math stud!!! Meanwhile, Urkel and his posse were busy contributing at the Wooden Center...

You know why the wind always blows from the North to the South at UCLA?

Because South Campus sucks.

I still remember the old jokes even after (ack) 16 years.

Why do you have to rub it in?
Now that I'm working in a field that has nothing to do with my major, I keep wondering what it would have been like to have the easy life on North Campus instead of the cut-throat pre-med classes...

North Campus had the Sculpture Garden...South Campus had...the Ear Wax Statue...sigh...

My roomie did a paper on graffiti
and how it changed depending on where the bathrooms were.  As I recall, he said the stuff in the Engineering building was by far the most clever, and from the evidence that I saw he was right.  Maybe it's time for an updated survey.

Would it be in bad taste
to nominate a certain Senator for that assignment?

Ouch.  I'll stop right there.

I wonder what would happen if
Craig and Barney Frank got named to the same committee?  It would give an entire new meaning to the phrase "Joint Investigation."
