How Many More Saturdays?

Earlier in the week we commemorated the 10 year anniversary of Route 66. I wrote how it served as the nuclear moment for a Texas football program which had enough of John Mackovic. I also wrote if somehow someway we lost this weekend, it should serve as the "nuclear moment" of current coaching regime at UCLA.

Now it has happened. We have officially experienced the nuclear moment of Karl Dorrell's worthless tenure at UCLA.

I don't think there is any doubt as bad as the losses against Fresno State, Wyoming, Arizona (05), 19-66, Washington, Notre Dame, and Florida State, this is the WORST LOSS in the history of Dorrell era and possibly one of the WORST FIVE LOSESS in the history of UCLA football.

Seriously though?

Are any of us who have been around this Nation really all that surprised?

How many more Saturdays do I have to feel sick in my stomach every time I watch a UCLA football game?

How many more Saturdays do I have to watch our opponent's football team look like the one that is always more inspired, fired up, and focused when taking on my alma mater's program?

Just how many more Saturdays we are going to have to put up with a total CLOWN making a mockery out of our beloved football program?

How many more Saturdays will Dan Guerrerro allow this worthless CLOWN to sully the proud tradition of our alma mater's football program as the laughing stock of college football.

One silver lining to the latest Dorrellian special: we didn't have to wait till the end of the season (like we did in 2005) to be humiliated and exposed as a worthless paper tiger.

Let me see if I can be fair. I will try to write this with a straight face and with out ROFL: UCLA can still win the Pac-10, which will be the only accomplishment at this point that may justify the CLOWN's return as the UCLA head coach. I use the word "may" because even if we somehow pull that miracle off, the bitter taste of tonight's game will not go away.

But we can all kind of see the writing on the wall. Can't we?

The question is just how many more Saturdays do we have to go through and sign this same sad and pathetic song?

Around here, most of us knew Dorrell is nothing short of the Steve Lavin of college football. Only question remains is whether he is a "Steve Lavin with conscience"?

If the answer is yes, he would resign tomorrow.

If Dorrell has any sense of dignity and self respect left he would resign and let this charade end this week.

GO BRUINS.

PS: DeWayne Walker is a farce. He is an overhyped clown. So stop the nonsense of him taking over as an interim coach before you think about typing it. The entire KD staff is a sick charade.

I don't even know how to describe what I just watched.

Just, wow.

I'm so sad about the way we lost.
We'd be calling for his head if we lost, but the way we lost hurts.  My vote is

I think SUC also uses WCO and
they've been pretty successful.  I am just looking out there for someone to restore respect to our football program.

I'm embarrassed
That was the worst-coached game I have ever seen, and I was at UCLA during the Cory Paus era!  Completely ridiculous...

Dan Guerrero has done a great job with Basketball and Baseball, why can't he pull the trigger on Dorrell?

Sick to my stomache
I am just shocked. Shocked. A battered, beaten up Utah team just raped a UCLA team returning 20 starters. Oh. My. God.

Why not take a knee every possession? At least ADMIT you aren't trying to win, KD. That was pathetic. Pathetic. PATHETIC!!!!!

This is the worst loss for UCLA football at least since I have been closely following the team (mid-Toledo era).

When was the lost @OSU when Jonathan Smith was QB?
That's the only one I can think of that compares to this.  Seems like dude threw a bomb on us every single play.  Anyone remember the year?  I do remember almost throwing the remote through the front window.

This is like
that Stanford loss when Lavin was the coach and we lost by like 44 points.  I'm surprised they didn't have one of those contests on the screen where you could text message some number and tell KD what play to call next.  Maybe instead of having a head coach for the rest of this season, they could just have UCLA fans vote on what play to call via text message.  I'm guessing UCLA would win more games.

Nightmare!!!
My  co-worker is a Ute, and we were discussing the game on Friday.  He was sure the Utes were going down, given the injuries they've had.  Leave it to KD to prove him wrong.  Now I have to go to work on Monday with this over my head.  Thanks KD.

Coach
I was so angered by this crap today that I am posting for the first time. I vote for Rick Neuheisel.  UCLA alum. Proven winner. Very slight gambling problem. This was horrible. How long can he stand there on the sideline and applaud?

Ben Olson sucks
I have been a bruin fan since the 70s and this is also my first time posting.  This loss was so terrible, it compelled me to blog. The problem is a QB that can neither run or throw. He is only good for handing off which my nine year old son can do. This is Cory Paus all over again. We need Patrick Cowan back.

KD put this team together and this is KDs program. BO did not play well, but neither did the rest of the team (66 pts against Utah????). KD needs to get out.

looking back on the BYU game
someone on the forum said we made them "1-dimensional" by stopping there run. i said they merely passed because we couldnt stop them. im pretty sure this makes it VERY F**KING CLEAR that our defense and offense is absolutely terrible.  totally outcoached and outplayed.  its is EMBARRASSING to see such a lower level team dissect our every move.
Go Bruins!

Our pass defense has been embarrassing all year long. Stanford lit us up. So did BYU. Now this.  Who cares how many returning starters we have at this point. All KD does is reinforce their bad habits. wow---still in shock

Only one question
Who's the next coach after the season ends?   They have to wait for the season to end to hire and respectable coach.

I somehow wasn't surprise either
This was utterly disgraceful.

Honestly, it is difficult to overstate how bad that was.

But the part of you post that I can relate to the most is how KD has sullied my joy in following Bruin football.

I guess Michigan's loss to App. St was worse for Michigan.  But only because their fans probably didn't think they had a shot of losing that game.  For me, on the other hand, I had to go into this one thinking it was a distinct possibility.  I guess at least I wasn't blindsided.

Still, the way we lost even surprised the pessimist in me, and was the worst thing I've seen in recent memory.  Appalling.

by Menelaus on Sep 15, 2007 5:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

To be honest
I knew losing to these guys was a good possibility. But even a jaded fan like me is surprised at the way our guys just quit on him.

I mean they quit on him.

And then KD left all his starters in ... as his best OL and DE gets hurt. I know we can't even go there. But the clusterf*ck is just mindboggling.

Also
I wish someone TIVOed the show before the season started titled, "In His Own Words" or something like that. Apparently in that show KD implied he was underpaid. A youtube clip w/ a rough transcript - if anyone has it would be awesome if you can share or post it here.

The whole team basically
told Karl Dorrell to go f--- himself in the second half, and then Dorrell told his starters that they can go f--- themselves and he left them in there to get injured.

This is the mentality of the no-talent ass clown that is "leading" our alma mater's football team.

Romper Room Response
Are You So Called Fans
"Are you jumping off the bus already? Boy an ugly loss and all the BN rejects come flooding in. So regulars here also disappointment as well.

Yes, we got a beat down by the Utes. Them came ready to play and we did not. That turn over when Everett tried to reach for the endzone permanetly put the momentum in the Utes hands for good.

Lets face it our defensive stradegy sucked. As well as the play of our offensive line. And I think Ben played pretty good when given time. The offensive game plan look good in the first drive than we tanked for the rest of the game using plays that this team has seen twice and now we have seen it for a third time.

DW did not learn a damn thing from the BYU game last week in how to attack a team that plays out of the shotgun formation.

With all that said I am not going anywhere. I will be there next week at the RB rooting my tonsil out for our boys and coaches.

It's okay to bash the coaches but let's not BN here okay. If you want than go to the BN and pledge your alegiance to nestor and the like."

My predictions
The season will go in one of 2 ways:
  1. The team implodes and and wins maybe 2 more games.
  2. The team rallies and plays well the rest of the season, but I can't see more than 4 more wins.
Either way, we get a chance at a good coach next year.

Fire Him, Tonight!
Friday, in response to a question from Fox, I wrote the following post. In it, I argued that whether or not we won this game, we should fire KD, now.

I am re-posting it because I am so angry I cannot write anything as careful and even handed as this post.

So, here it is:

"Yes, I Would Fire Him Now
Actually, I would have fired him at the end of last season.

In my eyes, the sc victory was not enough lipstick on the pig to save his job. And, whatever luster the sc game gave the pig's face, it was quickly removed in the nut bow.

Fox, you have been the consistent voice of reason on this issue.

Instead of listening to you, the powers that be decided to allow KD one more chance to prove he was the man for the job.

But, they also raised the standards. All agree that the expectations set forth in BN over the off season are reasonable. They have been incorporated by the AD, the MSM and by KD himself.

Now, after two games against less than stellar opposition, it is clear that we are not going to meet those expectations.

So, the question is: Do we really want to sacrifice our chance for a golden season by allowing this coach to stumble through the remaining games?

I, for one, would pull him, now -- before we lose a conference game that will end our quest for greatness, a Pac 10 championship and a BCS bowl bid.

Is there anyone who thinks we have improved over last year? That we are playing with consistent energy, intensity, and creativity?

If not, it's time for a change.

Why should we sacrifice our chance for a golden year? Why should we sacrifice the chance for our large senior class to truly achieve the greatness their talent mandates?

Yes, replacing a coach after three games is not "nice". But, neither is wasting another season.

At least KD was given a chance. There are risks associated with taking that chance -- one of them is mid-season dismissal.

Is this premature? Should I be waiting until after the results of the Utah game? I think not. The Utah game is not relevant to the reasons we need to make a mid season change. I don't care how big we win, I don't see enough change from the past years to warrant keeping the current coach.

Yes, it is only the third game of the season. But, that reasoning should ring very hollow; we have a very experienced team on the field. It should not take 2 or 3 games to come up to speed.

Is there any doubt that KD, or for that matter any coach, would not hesitate to go to a back up quarterback if his starter was shown to be ineffective for the first couple of games?

If we accept the removal and replacement of "key position" players, why don't we apply the same set of standards to the head coach?

Oh -- I get it. We have a new OC -- that's slowing us down. Sorry, but that's on KD's shoulders. The revolving door is his fault and his responsibility and ought not be an excuse for giving him more time.

No business would tolerate this slide to mediocrity. And, no university would allowed a pattern of mediocrity from a classroom teacher.

But, it appears that although my alma mater demands excellence and accountability in the classroom -- from both its students and faculty, it does not demand that same excellence and accountability from its football coaches.

So "yes" 71, I'm with you. I've been with you since last year. When asked directly what I'd do, I'll answer. But, I'll not knock my head into a stone wall by raising the spectre of firing the coach, each week. I'll leave that to you. You've done a great job. I  admire your tenacity and consistency.

There are a few of us who never drank the Walker Kool Aid, who didn't think our D was all that good, who didn't think he was a big time coach or appropriate replacement for KD.

38 point loss to the 0-2 Utes
ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?!

I honestly cannot recall a more humiliating loss. Even 19-66 didn't feel this bad.

I wrote back in July or something that Dorrell would find a way to lose either at Stanford or at Utah, given his dismal road record. After the 1st couple of weeks I thought that it couldn't happen given how bad Stanford and Utah appeared to be.

Sadly, Utah may be the worst team left on our schedule, except maybe Notre Dame.

I honestly can't fathom any rational Bruin fan who still can support Dorrell. He is a joke. I feel bad for our kids who have to play for this clown. They deserve better.

When will this nightmare end?!

It's up to DG now.

Hire an Interim Coach
Taking decision making power away from "incompetents" is not unheard of. In fact, it happens every day.

I am quite serious. Maybe, we can get someone like Dick Vermeil to take control of the program for the remainder of the season.

He'd probably have to keep much of the current staff, but put them under scrutiny and limit their autonomy.

Conservators are placed in charge when people can't get out of their own way -- and when they run the risk of doing irreperable harm to themselves or others.

DG -- you have the power to step up and do the right thing. Step up.

More people are not surprised by this game
But there is still a lot of shock out there.  This is UCLA football.  Accept it and get angry and call Guerrero.   We are the 7-6 team that got BLASTED in the bowl game, not the fluke at USC.  Maybe now the masses will finally understand that.  I can not see how KD survives this but I've been saying that for 5 years.

Also:

The offense is not a West Coast.  A west coast has 5+ options for a QB.  This simply doesn't.

I'm not sold on Ben, but I do believe that no QB in the world will be successful in this crap system.  Let's not forget, NO ONE EVER HAS BEEN.  The only time a UCLA offense has worked (except against the Stanfords of the world) is when they just started chucking the ball down field when down big.

I wrote this poem a year ago...
but some it still applies today.

Disclaimer: I by no means claim to be a poet but one Sunday evening I was bored, fed up with Karl and inspiration hit. Also, it was written before the sc game hence my reference to not winning a big game.

October 29, 2006 - Sunday

RUN. RUN. PASS. PUNT.
I wish I could hate you, then I wouldn't feel so bad
You're a better guy than lavin, but your coaching's just as sad.
You seem like a really nice man
Why every Saturday are you bringing the same shitty game plan?
I'm sure you must care
But there's nothing inspiring about your perennial blank stare.
You are yet to win a big game
By the way, all those field goals are lame.
I must admit I like the way you dress
Too bad this season is such a mess.
And while I really wanted you to do well
The program has gone to hell.
Alas, it's time for you to go
I don't want to hear any more about your W-C-O!

I thought I heard...
...the score wrong.  I watched the first quarter and listened to the second quarter on the radio before attending a function at my daughter's school.  Got in my car afterwards, turned on 570 but there was a lot of static and thought I heard Chris Roberts say "44-6" and for a moment I thought, "Nahh."  But unfortunately, the radio cleared up, and the reality of things set in.

I feel sick - the parallels to Lavin are frightening.  Now it's up to Guerrero to show UCLA fans that the administration actually cares about football, or if they'd rather do it on the cheap, win some hoops titles and a bunch of others in sports I care about only marginally.

I would say this loss is unbelievable, but it really isn't given the history of this team under Dorrell.

Shameful
I found the coach's decision to leave fatigued starters in the game when the outcome was no longer in question, exposing them to the injuries we witnessed, thoroughly shameful.  If he were a physician, a strong case could be made for malpractice.

I don't mean to insult the man....
But do we even know that he has the intelligence to understand what he's doing?

WE DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO COME BACK. He left our starters on the field, and nonchalantly ran out the clock. No shots to the end zone, no hurry-up offense, nothing. Absolutely nothing. I'm beginning to question if he even knows how to coach at all.

THIS IS A JOKE OF A PROGRAM
I didn't see the game, I'll admit that and I'm obviously glad because I likely would've broken my tv set or committed suicide. But as many of us have commented already... many of us simply aren't surprised we lost... but the fact that we simply didn't show up to play AND beat ourselves the way we did? That falls ENTIRELY on the the coach... how will he explain his way out of this one?

While I still have yet to evaluate Olson in a full game (having limited access to Bruin games here on the Right Coast), he clearly doesn't appear to be the answer. I mean, was he limited at all in being able to gunsling it or is he simply proving not to be a southpaw gunslinger?? IF so, what a waste... Throw in the walk-on back-up, what ever is name is, he can't be as bad or as inept as this...

Call it a season... seriously... what will the Notre Dame game be like? I now fear today's frustrated Huskies coming to the Rose Bowl next week. Talk about taking their frustration out on the Bruins... I mean Utah was 0-2 and had scored NINETEEN points in two games (against lowly teams)... they come in and score 44 against Walker's D. What the F- - k??!!

This season is over... yes, they either cave in and win two or three more games or they rally and become competitive... NO WAY IN HELL WILL THEY WIN or can they win THE PAC 10... I'm watching $C gradually grind away at the Cornhuskers in Nebraska as we speak, it's 21-10 now, in about an hour it'll be 44-13, watch. The Bruins never go to someone else's house and annihilate them the way SC does... call it a season, it's over...

We'll be lucky to win 5 games this season.

Fire Dorrell tonight and either let Walker give it a shot or let Ed Keserian (sp?) coach it on an interim basis in order to send a message to the team, to the alumni and to the Pac-10 that we mean business. This program has to head in a completely different direction. It HAS to. This program as it stands right now, is a complete and absolute JOKE.

Other than this blog... I'll probably tune out the rest of the season. I'll spare myself the frustration and the anguish. This is just too painful to bear.

Fire Dorrell first thing Monday morning, Mr. Guerrero, seriously.

Saving grace
The best thing about today's game was that it was broadcast on Versus fuzzyvision, so most fans were unable to get the game. We were clearly outclassed by a MWC 0-2 team. The next best thing to happen would be for KD to remain in Utah and look for honest work where he could learn usable skills and be able to add value someday painting houses or plumbing. Remember too, he said he was underpaid recently.... WHAT A JOKE!!!

So this is what's it's come to....
Utah?!?! A f'n third tier MWC team? Really? This is truly a dark day for UCLA football. This year was full of talk about really putting UCLA football back on the map. We totally took a couple steps back with today's events. SPJ is not the answer. Im sorry. In the second half KD just called it a day. Now Im a  Bruin born and raised, but with an idiot running our football, what can we expect ? Ill be @ the RB screaming my voice off next week trying to push our boys to the Pac-10 title. But if this continues there will be nothing left to look forward except SC winning another title and Bruins everywhere hanging their heads in shame......DUMP DORRELL!!!!!

Third Tier MWC Team?
How many tiers does that conference have?  One for each team?

Just got home from my show
My prediction in the car on the way home was a 55-0 victory.  There's just nothing to say.

There is no reason that can possibly be conceived by even the most loyal Dorrellista why he should stay one more day.

The announcement should come tomorrow morning.  We can find an interim head coach.  If it could possibly be done, we should get a new OC and new DC as well.  Training Jay called plays that have gotten us a grand total of two TD's and four field goals in the past 8 quarters.  The great Drain Walker managed to direct a defense that has given up 58 points in the past 6 quarters.

What was their explanation?  What was said in the press conference?  When will ANYONE in Morgan Center say enough?  When will ANYONE in Morgan Center find a sense of embarrassment.

You may have noticed that I cannot find it in me to mention the name of Coach Howland's predecessor.  It's the same now with Coach Toledo's successor.

Nestor, it's time to update "the list" and would you please figure a way to make a permanent link to it so we can quickly access it to send it to everyone we can think of who might not understand what we have been going through for the past 5 years?

Calls to Danny Boy ain't gonna do squat
DG is very much part of the problem here.

Anybody that dishes out contract extensions to a unproven, ineffective, inexperienced coach as in KD is very much part of the problem.

Like a previous poster so candidly pointed out, with all of the assistants that KD has canned in the five years he has made an abortion of this program, when does he belly up to the bar and be a man and admit that perhaps he is the problem and fire his sorry ass himself?

Embarrasments such as today's game only undermines the recruiting game where the prizes head across town to sign on instead.

No no no....
The problem wasn't him, it's that we didn't pay him enough! THAT'S the reason!

Quick, someone negotiate a $35 million extension! Then we'll start winning, I know it!

Duke and North Carolina called: They want Steve Lavin back. GO BRUINS!!

The last nail in the coffin
No,  it's not likely to happen from the AD or the U this week.
But after this performance,  if Trite Excitement has any sense of integrity,  he resigns, and his whole, worthless, incapable staff follows suit.

I can't tell if BO really stinks, or if he is terminally confounded by the Worst Crappy Offense (I have ever seen).  All this talk about "defensive swagger" is horseshit, too.  Swagger doesn't make tackles.  Swagger doesn't knock down passes or intercept them.  Swagger just makes you look like a jerk - particularly when you play like unmotivated stiffs.

This loss came to a team which  was embarrassed by Oregon State two weeks ago.  It had several second stringers in skill position starting roles.

Where can I write for a refund for my Season tickets?  Anyone for a class action lawsuit, premised on fraud or negligent misrepresentation?  I feel utterly snookered.  Cal, Oregon, ASU, WSU and of course U$C are all gonna beat us.  6-6 NEXT YEAR?   Nope,  try this season.  ARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Mad Bruin

Now wait
I think we need to give KD a chance.  It's not his fault that we lost this...

Oh man, I can't believe I almost finished typing that.  I think I even threw up in my mouth a little.

GO BRUINS. HOOK 'EM HORNS.

My Condolences
BN, Bruins fans, and those concerned with UCLA: I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am thinking about you, am empathizing with your frustration, and have voted that KD should get fired tonight. This was a loss that only a few coaches, like KD and Lloyd Carr, could have "pulled off." I am terribly sorry and hope that there are better days ahead. Ideally, maybe KD can go, his incoming recruits can stay, and a real coach can get UCLA winning consistently and among the best programs in the country. The classy folks on this site certainly deserve it.

A quote from Mandel
"Finally, it figures the one week I finally disregard the Karl Dorrell factor and bump UCLA up seven spots in the power rankings, they go and put up a vintage Dorrell-caliber letdown, getting destroyed on the road by an 0-2 Utah team. Technically, it has no bearing on the Bruins' Rose Bowl hopes -- but I'm pretty sure it ain't happening."

Thats it... I quit
I have just shredded the remaining portion of my season tickets.  I won't watch another second of UCLA football while Karl Dorrell is the head coach.  I quit, I've had enough, I'm out.  Good luck to all of you that remain.  The road ahead will be harsh and humiliating.  I simply just can't take it anymore.

Goodbye.
