Guerrero Grades: Utah
Bumped. GO BRUINS -N
cross-posted from DumpDorrell.com
This may be a pointless exercise from here on out, but we will stick with it because we must be relentless until the outcome (Dorrell is fired) is secure. For those who are new to DD or are coming back after a hiatus, we have been using Dan Guerrero's own words to assess Dorrell's performance during the season. Here is what Guerrero said he expects this season:
"The important thing this year," Guerrero said, "is that we don't beat ourselves, that we play with consistency, that we're an excellent second half team and that we improve as the year progresses."
As we posted last week and will continue to do throughout the season, here is our assessment of Karl Dorrell's performance yesterday against Utah with Guerrero's clear points of analysis in mind (obviously this won't be surprising):- We don't beat ourselves. Grade: F. 5 Turnovers, 10 penalties, 5 sacks, unprepared, unfocused, outschemed, outcoached, outgamed. Self-mutilation.
- Play with consistency. Grade F. There was consistency today. We are sure Dan Guerrero did not have this type of consistency in mind when he spoke about needing it. There was only 1 drive and play that looked good ... the long pass to Marcus Everett in the 3rd quarter that could have made a 17-6 game closer. But the fumble touchback killed any hope that was left at that point. We played consistently and thoroughly badly throughout the game so the obvious grade is an F here.
- Excellent 2nd half team. Grade F -. We are breaking convention and assigning the minus grade here to Dorrell. What the heck did he say during halftime to bring our senior-heavy experience-rich team down??!! What de-motivational speech did he give??? Outscored 30-0 in the second half by an 0-2 MWC team reeling from key player losses, playing with the backup QB is a break in convention that deserves the F-.
- Improve as year progresses. Grade F-. While we are using it ... F- again. Our #11 ranking we knew was a joke (look at our BlogPoll ballot). Dorrell has never EARNED anything but that SuC win. That is it. The rest of his victories any one of us could have gotten using sheer talent alone. He was OUTCOACHED period!! What team, what coach, is going to lose to Dorrell now?? All the game film out there this year already, even our Stanford win, amounts to about as easy a recipe as there is in college football to beat a BCS conference team. What coach loses sleep when he has to meet Karl Dorrell for their next game??
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Dorrell has F'd Up the Program
My favorite Dorrell quote from yesterday (and there are always so many to pick from) was his idiotic explanation for the illegal procedure penalties on UCLA. "It was the noise." Um, right. Has anyone checked this guy's IQ?
No offense whatsoever to Utah, who completely deserved their win, but playing at Utah is not generally considered an overly loud, hostile environment.
I hate to use this as an example, but SuC played before 85,000 drunk and rabid crazies at Nebraska last night and SOUNDLY crushed them. If Dorrell thought Utah was "loud," what would he think of playing at Nebraska? How about at Tennessee? The Big House? The Swamp? Shall I keep going?
Dorrell gets all "Fs" from me. He has F'd up our football program and now the players and the fans have been F'd by him.
He will never, ever resign his million dollar job no matter how badly he destroys the program. He does not have it in him to do so. He must be fired now. If he stays, next year will be WORSE. This is not a prediction--it is a fact.

I almost forgot
What a horrible, horrible broadcast. It was only marginally better than community access television. Perhaps not.
The announcers, who were obviously either escaped mental patients or moonlighting rodeo clowns, suffered from both extreme verbal diarrhea and consistently moronic observations.
Did Versus have more than two cameras covering that game?
Dorrell and Versus deserve each other. I am not sure what UCLA fans have done to deserve either of them.

The pollsters have given out their own grades
As expected (and deserved), UCLA falls from #11 to being out of the top-25 (Coaches - #29, AP - #30).

Voters can't see all the games
But those voters knew enough about a 44-6 drubbing at the hands of Utah to know that we don't belong in the to 25.
Can anyone remember when the Bball team wasn't in the top 25? I suppose when Coach Howland was trying to fix the mess caused by his predecessor. Oh yeah - a professional coach cleaned things up in one season. If Coach Toledo's successor is fired now, and we get a Howland-esque coach in to fix things, maybe that fix can be done in an eight game season, and we'll be ready to fly next year.
Plus, if you want to watch a reply of the UCLA-Utah game, turn on the Chargers against the Patriots. The Chargers are getting UCLA-ed.

Actually
About football: somehow we still got 122 votes in the coaches' poll, so some of them didn't know enough.

I disagree, Tasser
If he does not fire him now, why not? He has never explained his reasoning.
The only explanation is that Mr. Guerrero thinks Coach Toledo's successor is doing an acceptable job. If that is so, then Mr. Guerrero does not understand what is happening to the program. To me, that means he is not the right person for the job of Athletic Director.
I'm a long way away from Los Angeles. Doesn't anyone ever get the chance to stick a microphone in his face and ask some tough questions? I really would like to hear his reasoning for keeping Coach Toledo's successor in place.

You just can't fire a coach mid-season
