Taking Responsibility (Protecting Players)

This is pretty amazing. Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy goes after some local hack for taking shots at Bobby Reid (HT norcalbruin95), arguably the most talented signal caller on the Cowboy's depth chart:

A little different from our Sleeping Beauty, who throws his players under the bus every chance he gets.

Someone needs to send that video to the Sleeping Beauty.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE -N: The money line in this thread belongs to Dante:

Like Gundy said, this is not professional sports. Coaching in college isn't just about X's and O's, and that is why Ryan Hollins was a March Madness MVP, while Ben Olson has looked so unremarkable. A point I have been trying to make for last three weeks. GO BRUINS.

Bravo!!!
I love this guy.

I love his passionate protection of his players -- that's what a stand up coach is supposed to do. That's what any leader, CEO, lead trial lawyer, fire captain is supposed to do -- protect the people under his command.

I also loved the fact that he appeared to lock eyes with the guy who wrote the article. No fear of the press. Right at them.

His team might not win, but I can see why kids would want to play for him and parents would want them to, also.

Good find.

Wow
Somehow I cannot imagine Dorrell ever getting this animated or protecting anyone other than his own a*s.

Powerful stuff.

Wow
thank you for finding this! This is a real coach. 66 said it best, he might not win, but this is a guy kids would want to play their hearts out for, and parents would trust their kids with.  A guy that would most likely not forget a player is on the sideline, that would most likely make sure a star recruits paperwork was in order, a guy that would take the blame for losses and spread the credit for wins.  It's nice to be reminded that real coaches are still out there. Someone should send this as a tape or disk to Guerrero and Dorrell.

No tape needed
They just need to find Ben Howland's office for that.

As an NCAA athlete
at the Division III level, I have to say that Gundy is the kind of coach any college athlete in any sport at any level would like to play for.

I am fortunate enough to have such a coach - a coach that really cares about every student-athlete's well-being, a coach that keeps his players out of trouble, a coach that will take the blame for a loss and after a win, credit his players.

Like Gundy said, this is not professional sports.  Coaching in college isn't just about X's and O's, and that is why Ryan Hollins was a March Madness MVP, while Ben Olsen has looked so unremarkable.

Here's the original article...
that led to Coach Gundy's response.

article

Some low-brow writing, with some definite cheap-shots IMHO.

No Cussing Either
That guy shows control....he managed to express himself and make his point very clear without going all Bobby Knight on the scribes.

A technical question
Purely hypothetical:If several players were to bolt to other schools, would those scholarships be replaceable beyond the 25 per year limit or would the school go shorthanded on scholarship athletes for awhile? Anyone?

Ben Howland Protected His Players from the Press
The videos of Howland made me remember when he chastised the press for being too noisy during some player press conferences.

He was criticized for it -- but he did the right thing. He really is a stand up guy.

Now THAT is a stand up coach
I want that guy at UCLA.

And there is no question in my mind that he was addressing every word of that speech to the guy who wrote the article.

I am very impressed with that guy.

Can someone send this to Mr. Guerrero?  He needs to see what a stand up guy looks like.  You can't tell me his players would not run through a wall for him.

Saw this last night
Didn't read the article until now.  Wow.  This lady set female sports journalists back decades with that crap.  There are classier way to get your point across.  You don't need to write like a tabloid writer to make your point.

A big hand to this coach for sticking up for his players the way he did.

Defining the the anti-dorrell
"Come after me, I'm a man... Write something about me, or our coaches..."

Does anyone here think that Dorrell would ever, in a million years, utter such words in the face of some BS hack job on one of our players; say Platchke ripping on BO's play?

I followed a few links to look further into this
The reporter stands by her story.  Wow! There's news.  She makes up something, gets called out on it, and decides she has nothing to lose by sticking to her guns.  And the head of the College Football Writers Association called out Gundy for jumping down this reporter's throat.

I remember when reporters actually inspired admiration.  Unfortunately, we have seen so many of them simply invent their stories or worse.

Anyway, another place I clicked to was a series of comments about Coach Gundy's statements.  I may be off in my numbers, but there were something like 500 or so.  100% of the ones I saw were supportive of the coach.  Basically, everyone reacted to the story like we did here.

It will probably all die down.  But the kid the Coach defended will not be the same.  I would not want to be around him when someone took a potshot at the coach.  I think those Oklahoma boys can get pretty tough when the time comes.

I dont agree
You want to be a D-1 coach at a BCS conference school, you have got to show more composure than this. Sticking up for your players is one thing. This is a ridiculous overreaction, and completely ignores the 85 other guys who busted their collective ass to beat Texas Tech. You would never see Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Mack Brown, Bob Stoops et al pull something like this IMO

That being said, Gundy showed more passion and emotion in a 4 minute rant than I've seen in 5 seasons under Dorrell

by BillyZoom on Sep 24, 2007 11:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think
You are on point. I wouldn't want Gundy at UCLA. But I loved how he defended his players.

by Nestor on Sep 25, 2007 4:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gundy just rants
Blowing a gasket doesn't make you a good COACH.  Are you guys high, suggesting that UCLA hire him?  He just got his head beat in by Troy.  He's on the hot seat just like Dorrell is.

by ucla21 on Sep 25, 2007 2:23 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would take half a Gundy over
ten guys like the pretender who occupies the chair for UCLA.

He's 2-2, including a loss to ranked Georgia and a loss to a team they shouldn't have lost to.  Gee, where I have I heard that before.

Absolutely - I would absolutely take Gundy over CTS.  Are you saying you want to keep CTS if the choice is to trade him for Gundy?  You're saying CTS is a better coach under any criteria?  I will never agree with that assessment.  Never.  A much more difficult decision would be whether to trade Lloyd Carr for CTS, but I think I would have to make the deal.  I'm now back to reality - there is no coach anywhere in the country who I would not prefer over CTS (with the exception of Cheatie Petie and others like him who flout the rules.)

I would take the Taco Bell chihuahua over KD
At least I could understand when the chihuahua speaks.

by bluegold on Sep 25, 2007 7:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
I don't think anyone is genuinely suggesting that UCLA hire Gundy.  It's a rhetorical device to say "I wish we had that guy" to show admiration for him sticking up for his players.

IHO, this and the last few comments to this story are a bit of an overreaction.

by Menelaus on Sep 25, 2007 6:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No Way
Saw this on ESPN when it happened and Gundy just lost it. I agree, he shows no composure whatsoever. And his teams get punked more times than I can count. This guys is a moron. As much as KD needs to go, definitely wouldn't bring this guy. That would be taking another step back... going from bad to worse.

by northwestbruin on Sep 25, 2007 4:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I just watched it again.
I have one question for those of you who think Gundy is a moron, or overreacted or lost it or whatever.

You must choose one person to be our head football coach.  Your choices are Coach Gundy or The Thinker, the Sleeper, Dopey, Coach Toledo's successor.  Who would you choose?

If you actually, honestly would prefer CTS, I would really like to hear your explanation.  If you really think that UCLA's football program would be in better hands with CTS rather than Coach Gundy, then I somehow must have been warped into the Bizarro Universe.

Thanks.  I'll hang up and take your answer off the air.

by Fox 71 on Sep 25, 2007 10:16 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Both idiots
Nothing more to say.  Howland would never melt down like Gundy, and at the same time isn't a spineless person like Dorrell.

by ucla21 on Sep 25, 2007 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, but not responsive
Who is your choice - Gundy or Sleepy/Dopey/CTS?

If you elect to choose no one, then in my opinion that's a vote to maintain the status quo.  That prospect is so terrible that I can't even think of any clever joke to throw into the mix.
