Taking Responsibility (Protecting Players)
This is pretty amazing. Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy goes after some local hack for taking shots at Bobby Reid (HT norcalbruin95), arguably the most talented signal caller on the Cowboy's depth chart:
A little different from our Sleeping Beauty, who throws his players under the bus every chance he gets.
Someone needs to send that video to the Sleeping Beauty.
GO BRUINS.

Bravo!!!
I love his passionate protection of his players -- that's what a stand up coach is supposed to do. That's what any leader, CEO, lead trial lawyer, fire captain is supposed to do -- protect the people under his command.
I also loved the fact that he appeared to lock eyes with the guy who wrote the article. No fear of the press. Right at them.
His team might not win, but I can see why kids would want to play for him and parents would want them to, also.
Good find.

As an NCAA athlete
I am fortunate enough to have such a coach - a coach that really cares about every student-athlete's well-being, a coach that keeps his players out of trouble, a coach that will take the blame for a loss and after a win, credit his players.
Like Gundy said, this is not professional sports. Coaching in college isn't just about X's and O's, and that is why Ryan Hollins was a March Madness MVP, while Ben Olsen has looked so unremarkable.

Here's the original article...
Some low-brow writing, with some definite cheap-shots IMHO.

Ben Howland Protected His Players from the Press
He was criticized for it -- but he did the right thing. He really is a stand up guy.

Now THAT is a stand up coach
And there is no question in my mind that he was addressing every word of that speech to the guy who wrote the article.
I am very impressed with that guy.
Can someone send this to Mr. Guerrero? He needs to see what a stand up guy looks like. You can't tell me his players would not run through a wall for him.

Saw this last night
A big hand to this coach for sticking up for his players the way he did.

Defining the the anti-dorrell
Does anyone here think that Dorrell would ever, in a million years, utter such words in the face of some BS hack job on one of our players; say Platchke ripping on BO's play?

I followed a few links to look further into this
I remember when reporters actually inspired admiration. Unfortunately, we have seen so many of them simply invent their stories or worse.
Anyway, another place I clicked to was a series of comments about Coach Gundy's statements. I may be off in my numbers, but there were something like 500 or so. 100% of the ones I saw were supportive of the coach. Basically, everyone reacted to the story like we did here.
It will probably all die down. But the kid the Coach defended will not be the same. I would not want to be around him when someone took a potshot at the coach. I think those Oklahoma boys can get pretty tough when the time comes.

I dont agree
That being said, Gundy showed more passion and emotion in a 4 minute rant than I've seen in 5 seasons under Dorrell

Gundy just rants

I would take half a Gundy over
He's 2-2, including a loss to ranked Georgia and a loss to a team they shouldn't have lost to. Gee, where I have I heard that before.
Absolutely - I would absolutely take Gundy over CTS. Are you saying you want to keep CTS if the choice is to trade him for Gundy? You're saying CTS is a better coach under any criteria? I will never agree with that assessment. Never. A much more difficult decision would be whether to trade Lloyd Carr for CTS, but I think I would have to make the deal. I'm now back to reality - there is no coach anywhere in the country who I would not prefer over CTS (with the exception of Cheatie Petie and others like him who flout the rules.)

Well
IHO, this and the last few comments to this story are a bit of an overreaction.

I just watched it again.
You must choose one person to be our head football coach. Your choices are Coach Gundy or The Thinker, the Sleeper, Dopey, Coach Toledo's successor. Who would you choose?
If you actually, honestly would prefer CTS, I would really like to hear your explanation. If you really think that UCLA's football program would be in better hands with CTS rather than Coach Gundy, then I somehow must have been warped into the Bizarro Universe.
Thanks. I'll hang up and take your answer off the air.

Agreed, but not responsive
If you elect to choose no one, then in my opinion that's a vote to maintain the status quo. That prospect is so terrible that I can't even think of any clever joke to throw into the mix.
