Catch The (Ben Ball) Madness

Let's begin this post with a little shout out to everyone who might be out tonight doing this:

So they can show up tomorrow afternoon to put together this:

The best student section in America.

I don't think I am the only member of the Pauley sleep over club (there was no "Bruin Den" and cool t-shirts back in the 90s) who miss those days. But you can always get nostalgic and recount those 'Old School' memories by getting together with other members of this Nation.

If you are not one of those lucky ones with hot tickets for the big show tomorrow afternoon, you can always hit the bars to watch games with other alums and fans around country. Here is a quick list:

  • The Bay Area Bruins are putting together two parties. One is going to be in San Francisco at Kezar Pub & Restaurant, 770 Stanyan St. If you want to join this party please RSVP to Harry Machnov here. The other is going to be at the New Old Pro sports bar at 541 Ramona Ave in Palo Alto.

  • The alums in NYC will be watching at Village Pourhouse at 64 Third Avenue (corner of 11th St and Third Avenue)."

  • Alums in Washington, DC will be watching the game at the Ugly Mug - 723 8th St SE (near the Hill)

  • In Chicago, the Bruins watch their games at Joe's Bar, located at 940 W. Weed St. Here are the details.
Again, those are the get-togethers we know of. For more on alumni club football watching parties visit this site. If you have info on where the alumni group are watching the games in your town, post it here. One note to keep in mind - even though these get togethers are hosted by alums - of course, they are open to every member of Bruins Nation.

And, as always, if there are no parties in your areas, you can always self organize and plant a base at some local bar, café, or at your place! And, if you are planning to put together something big, or Bruin alums in your area are putting together a big event around this game, please share the details with us in this thread and invite everyone to come.

GO BRUINS.

The Madness
I was actually on campus for lunch today, and walked down through that very area between Pauley and Acosta.  There were more tents than in this photo, and it really got the memories flowing.  I can only hope that this year's version of those folks will get to experience the same thing we did in 1995.

Good times
During the 1994-95 we used to wheel a dirty couch down the Bruin walk (from our apartment) and hooked up NHL95 on Sega (and some frosty beverages - we were all 21 of course!). Good times!

Camping out
There were more than 100 people here camping out THURSDAY night and there're around 500 on the list now.  I hope they give us our priority passes early tonight instead of making us wait till 5am...

Guys
It would be really awesome if you can take pictures, put it on flickr and then blog it/link here.  Let us alums join in the fun and live through your college days.

Overnight Scene
So, the list has been full for hours now, and people are all over the place drinking, dancing, screaming, playing frisbee and football.  During the volleyball game a lot of us went in there to cheer them on, and even though they lost it was a lot of fun.  At around 11:00 the Den leaders called everyone together, gave the first 300-400 people southstreet, and handed out a special midnight episode of the dirt from the den which was basically a page-long bashing of O.J. Mayo.  Fun stuff :)

I remember a few years back...
When campers were allowed to sign in and out of the list for class and work.  The camp-outs would last multiple days.  My longest Pauley camp-out was 5 days for priority numbers for Oregon St and Oregon (senior day) in 2002!  We started Sunday night and were there until the wee hours of Saturday morning with a brief break for the Oregon St game on Thursday.  This was during some of the darker days of the Lavin era...I can only imagine the excitement among the students now  with the great team we have to root for!  To the campers: I know its going to be cold, but enjoy these times!  You'll look back on them as some of the most unique and fun experiences of your time at UCLA.  Its this kind of tradition, spirit, and fanaticism for our basketball programs that the clowns at JustSC will NEVER know or realize!

The build up will be better than the game
I said we'd breeze by WSU, and I say we're gonna breeze by U$C.

Watch parties in OC?
Anyone know where most of the OC Bruins will be watching? Fox in Irvine or ESPN at Disneyland?

by tommybruin on Jan 18, 2008 6:46 PM PST reply actions

Watch Parties in OC
I plan the watch parties for the OC Bruins.  We have them for all weekend away basketball games at Sharkeez in Huntington Beach.  They give us 2 for 1 drinks, free appetizer platters, and a reserved seating/standing section in the front of the bar.  Its really good times!  You should come out to them in the future.  E-mail me if you have any questions and/or check out our website: rgalloucla@hotmail.com or ocbruins.com

i'm glad i don't have to...
camp out because i get my tixs at will call, but at the sametime it would be fun to do it at least once.  the only problem is that i have work till midnight, all the ppl i know at acosta would give me a load of crap, and since i'm an old 5th year all my close friends have already moved on

Whatever happened to Frisbee?
in the second picture it looks like the "Yes thats a basketball" cheer that Frisbee did back in the 70's and 80's and is still done.  Where did he go?  To all you students out there who will attend tomorrow.  Be loud, be very loud.  Harass the Trojenz to no end.  Get in OJ2's dish.  Help the team to a big win.  Go Bruins.

I was at UGA @ UF Womens Gymnastics match tonight.
#1 vs #2 in the nation. 10,500 people showed up at the O-Dome. IIRC, that was more people than showed up at Pauley to watch UCLA win the National Championship in 2004. Anyways, it was an amazing matchup, UGA won by .025, the smallest margin possible.

So on the way out, there were a ton of tents set up for the Florida vs Kentucky basketball game tomorrow.

I couldn't help but ask these kids very loudly why they would bother camping out in the freezing cold to watch 2 unranked teams play each other?  Obviously my UCLA hat didn't help me much given our 2 f4 losses, but nonetheless, it was a good time.

MSM beginning to catch on?
While Grant Wahl's placement of the Bruins as one of his Magic Eight teams tabbed to win the national championship is not a particular shock, his comments regarding Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook seem to follow along with recent discussions on BN.
UCLA

Kevin Love's 27-point, 14-board tour de force against Wazzu should immediately put him in the discussion for Player of the Year, with extra degree-of-difficulty points for doing it against one of the nation's stingiest defenses. Russell Westbrook just became the nation's best sixth-man with his move out of the lineup (when was the last time a non-starter was an All-America candidate in college hoops?), but the real story here is UCLA's defense. The Bruins' first-half assault on Washington State was the single best half of D we've seen all season. We fear what the Bruins will do to USC in Pauley on Saturday after a week's rest.

Sleeping out
I slept overnight for The Who and The Clash in 1982, The Bruins with Rod Foster in 1983, Scotland vs England in 1984, the Sundance Film Festival in 1999, 2000, 2001.  I wish I was just rich enough to pay scalpers one of these days.

Pasadena?
any UCLA friendly hangouts in the Pasadena area?  I usually run into fans of some other (alleged) school there.

by doublebonus on Jan 18, 2008 11:38 PM PST reply actions

Hmm
There are a couple bars in Old Town on Colorado but I believe they cater to both UCLA and USC. You'd think I'd know since I live in the next town.

by Raisin on Jan 18, 2008 11:52 PM PST up reply actions

You'd think with the Rose Bowl and all
that Pasadena would lean towards UCLA, but it seems to be largely a USC town (and all parts east, in addition.)

Well, at least we have Woodenfest!

Save your receipts

Grr... I'm going to miss it.
But for a good cause, I think.

I'm in Nevada for the week volunteering for the Barack Obama campaign and tomorrow is caucus day.
