New 5 star QB transfer???

Bumped. If this turns out to be true also be on the look out for former Michigan QB coach Scott Loeffler (as speculated on Sunday). Rick F*&^ing Neuheisel. GO BRUINS. -N

If this is true...

Now, don't get your hopes up about the dude on the right. However, apparently the dude on the left, freshman QB Ryan Mallett from Michigan, has already decided to leave the team and sign up with UCLA! Here's the source:

There is speculation out of Ann Arbor that freshman quarterback Ryan Mallett has decided to leave Michigan and will transfer to UCLA, according to a person close to the team. Here's Mallett's profile.

Rick F*&%kin Neuheisel, ladies and gentlemen!

UPDATE –N: Brian over at MGoBlog has a post up on this topic, which reads like a concession post (?). Wolverines are taking "comfort" in landing Pryor (a hot shot 5 star QB for this year’s class who some are speculating will end up in Michigan, should Mallet decide to transfer). So, if this is true, it could be a double whammy for RN. Land an incredible talent in Mallet, while keeping Pryor out of the Pac-10 (Oregon is gunning hard for TP). GO BRUINS.

UPDATE II -N: From Sean at Michigan Sports Center:

As I said earlier today, listening to Lloyd Carr in his final meeting with the media suggested that Mallett had already made a decision, and my opinion was that that decision was to transfer. (By the way, Carr was wearing Adidas gear in that meeting because he can do what he wants) What really is interesting about this whole situation is to see where quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler ends up, because there are so rumors that he could go to UCLA. At the same time, rumors suggested that Mallett and Loeffler may sort of be a package deal, so if both landed in Westwood it wouldn't be surprising. Also per godblesstyus95 in the comment thread ESPN reported that "Lloyd Carr has spoken with Mallett and knows his decision, but wants Mallett to 'announce it himself'." Stay tuned. GO BRUINS.

UPDATE III -N: As flagged by SuperBruinMan in the comments, from Detroit Free Press, Debbie Malley pour a little cold water on all the speculation: "No decision has been made," Debbie Mallett said Thursday night of her son, the freshman quarterback — currently — at Michigan.

"Everybody thinks they know what Ryan’s doing. But Ryan has not made a decision yet. All these sources? They never came from anyone here." [...]

"He’s not a cure for cancer," she said of the thousands of fans across the country discussing her son. "We appreciate he has fans, but I don’t know how he handles this. He’s just 19 years old." LOL. Point taken. But next time we see any news report we will surely take note of it. In all fairness, from what I am hearing UCLA is not the only school in picture at this point. This all depends on where Scott L ends up as an assistant coach.

GO BRUINS.

Would be amazing
I won't hold my breath for this one but if we do get him, he will be amazing! He WILL be playing on Sunday's in the near future - he's an absolute stud at that position.

It would possibly make sense for him to come here, especially if we get the Michigan QB coach. Plus, RN's had great success developing QB's and other offensive players both in college and in the pro's...

As soon as I heard about RRod taking the job at
UM, I was thinking about the potential for Mallett to transfer out.

That would be a coup.

If true
RN will have equaled the number of offensive 5 star recruits in ONE WEEK than KD was able to haul in in 5 YEARS.

Go Bruins.

If True
Mustain Who!!!!

by bluestreet on Jan 3, 2008 10:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

IF true
Would he have to sit out a year?

by bruinbabe2000 on Jan 3, 2008 10:44 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeap
But then in two years we will have a roster of:

Mallett (redhsirt soph)
Forcier (redshirt soph)
Crissman (redshirt fresh - assuming he will redshirt)
The Law Firm (red shirt junior)

And I am sure RN will have other recruits on boards.

That would be RIDICULOUS DEPTH!!!

In the meantime, hope RN
can help develop Ben Olson into an NFL-type QB.  He deserves it after Doofus mis-used his talents for 3 years.

100% agree
Ben Olson's pitiful career at UCLA is IMO the most disappointing part of Dorrell's legacy. This kid transferred to UCLA and got totally wasted by Dorrell, Training Jay, and that miserable WCO. Considering his age and raw  he deserves a 2nd chance. Look at that kid Mauk in Cincy, Olson could have a similar resurgence next year in the hands of a competent coach.

Obviously reduntant...
but I could not agree more! I met Olson briefly on campus and he is a gracious, thoughtful young man. If he is used properly, Ben could have a great impact on our team. Nothing but best wishes from this Bruin!

RN is one guy who can probably help...
...turn Olsen's career around. I really do think that if Olsen really has what it takes and is not overrated, Neuheisel will get it out of him.

Confused...
Not that I am complaining, but I thought Rick couldn't talk to recruits until this weekend? Is it different for transfers?

by kidro2001 on Jan 3, 2008 10:48 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I believe
phone calls can be placed. I think no contact period deals with on campus visits or visiting recruits schools etc.

by bluestreet on Jan 3, 2008 10:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Here you go
I believe we are in the "dead period" right now:
What are the four football recruiting periods?

There are four specific recruiting periods in which coaches and athletics department staff are limited in their interaction with prospective student-athletes.

Contact period: Schools can have face-to-face off-campus contact with prospects and parents, and prospects can take part in activities designed for evaluating athletic and academic abilities.

Evaluation period: Schools can take part in activities designed for evaluating athletic and academic abilities, but they may not have face-to-face contact with prospects and parents.

Quiet period: Schools can only have face-to-face contact with prospects and parents while on campus. No contact or evaluation may be made off campus.

Dead period: Schools may not have face-to-face or in-person contact on or off campus, with either prospects or parents. Schools may write or telephone prospects during this period.

Full recruiting FAQ. Note that was from 01-02 recruiting calendar but I believe the same principle apply in this situation.

Must Be Quiet Period
That is the first time I have seen the recruiting period laid out in such a logical and concise manner.  Thanks for the post.

I believe I heard after the Neuheisel annoucement on Monday that he could still meet with recuits and their parents on campus. If that is true, this must be the Quiet Period, not Dead Period.

by Bruin77 on Jan 3, 2008 12:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Addendum to Previous Post
I forgot to mention, that before he can have any contact with recruits RN must first pass an NCAA examine on recruiting.  I have not seen anything on when or how that examine is administered.

by Bruin77 on Jan 3, 2008 12:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Great pickup
I think the recruiting class is going to be improved on the offensive side of the ball as well. I think we end up with a top 5 class.

QB's
We could have the kind of depth that $uC enjoys, but would that many QB's wait in line?
Also, if Mallett had to sit out a year, wouldn't he be a redshirt Junior (losing a year of eligibility)?  Was Olson a 5 star?

But then in two years we will have a roster of:

Mallett (redhsirt soph)
Forcier (redshirt soph)
Crissman (redshirt fresh - assuming he will redshirt)
The Law Firm (red shirt junior)

by BruinFam on Jan 3, 2008 11:01 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

re. QB's
Olson was a 5-star, at least when recruited out of high school.
Mallet would burn his redshirt year by sitting out next season (as a transfer), but would lose no eligibility, leaving him as a redshirt soph in 2009.

Got me thinking
Ain't holding my breath but makes sense considering RN's "expertise" is at the QB position.  He has tutored some very good/great QB's in Aikman (Great :P), Kordell Stewart, Tui, Derek Anderson and Troy Smith (Looked like he can play in the NFL against Pittsburgh).  Not inclusive but these are the names that would stick out.
The thing that really sticks out to me is that he has coached the classic "Pocket Passers" as well as "Dual-Threat". My memory evades me but when asked what type of O he was going to run on the radio, I'm pretty sure RN replied an O that moves the ball.  The bit that got my attention was when he specifically mentioned how with Tui, he incorporated more option based plays into his O because Tui could run.  Awesome.  A coach that modifies his O around the talent he has.  Breath of fresh air.

UCLA has a rich QB tradition that has faded recently but with RN, I can forsee a lot of stud QB's finding their way to Westwood to be coached by him.  Shoot, If I was a QB recruit, I'd definitely look at UCLA.  Spring Ball is going to be interesting overall but the QB position will be very, very interesting.  On paper, we have tremendous talent at the QB position.  Can RN help BO turn his fortunes around and have a monster SR year?  Will it be PC?  If OR stays at QB, how much will he improve under RN?  Wonder what he'll be able to do with Forcier & Crissman?  The competition for the QB should be hot and heavy.  I'm beyond stoked that I can once again root for UCLA whole heartedly.

by BlueReign on Jan 3, 2008 11:05 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think OR Moves Back to WR
I think one of the many tragedies of last year in addition total misuse of BO's talent was the way we handled OR.

OR can succeed as a WR. If Moore turns out to be a good position coach, we can line him at slot, and then use his TO like frame/athletic ability and unleash him on the Pac-10 DBs.

Remember who else RN coached up? JJ Stokes.

by bluestreet on Jan 3, 2008 11:08 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Or you can use him at qb for 5 or so plays a game
that take advantage of his mobility. Maybe some type of option.

by silverlakebruin on Jan 3, 2008 11:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't be a fan of that
because I think he can be a very good WR. Not at one point last season did I want to see O at QB. We weren't going anywhere last season and I'd have rather seen OR get a full season at WR so he can develop and become that elite athlete outside that we envisioned. If you don't think the guy can be a QB (I never have and after seeing him try to pass last season I don't think anyone really does anymore) so I wouldn't waste his time there when he can be an asset somewhere else.

Wow
Someone said "coup" and that's exactly what it would be if Mallet transfers.  I was hearing rumors from a well-informed source that Forcier was entertaining thoughts of transfering to Oregon where his talents would be better suited in a spread offense, but then backed off when RN was hired.  I hope the QBs already in the system and the incoming recruits aren't afraid of the competition and view it as a means of developing in a system to get to the next level.

by ishXdavid on Jan 3, 2008 11:28 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Dorrell spent his time playing golf and sleeping
Neuheisel is spending his KICKING ASS AND TAKING NAMES.  He's done more in a week than Doofus did all of last off-season.

by Tommy Bruin on Jan 3, 2008 12:09 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Great start to the NEU era
Getting Ryan Mallett would be an incredible start to begin the Neuheisel era, and would make some noise in the recruiting circles that UCLA football is back big time. On another note. Is it just me or does Mallett resemble Kevin Love?

by wizardofoc on Jan 3, 2008 12:12 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Haha
Kind of, at least in that picture he does. All he's missing is the beard.

ESPN just reported
that Lloyd Carr has spoken with Mallett and knows his decision, but wants Mallett to "announce it himself"

I may be speculating, but that sounds like he's leaving Ann Arbor.

Toledo Blade reports that Mallett will transfer..
here, but still this is not a confirmation. They just quote someone close to the team.

If Mallett comes, he might just be mistaken for KL as they are both enormous. Here's a report on Mallet, somewhat subdued, and providing some insight that Mallett's impetus to transfer might be a looming confrontation to super star recruit Terrell Pryor.

So with all that excitement over the next best thing, the biggest question lingering in Michigan is how the Wolverines' heir apparent at quarterback, Ryan Mallett, fits into Rodriguez's system. And will Pryor come to Michigan to try to beat him out, especially since Mallett would be only a sophomore when Pryor arrived on campus?
Mallett is a 6-foot-7, 252-pound quarterback with decent but unexceptional mobility and a big arm. He played more than Michigan would have wanted to as a true freshman, filling in for the injured Chad Henne to throw seven touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 43 percent of his passes.
Mallett will never be mistaken for Pat White, the run-first Heisman Trophy candidate at West Virginia. But here's where a misconception about Rodriguez's system comes in. While White and his predecessor Rasheed Marshall were runners, Rodriguez has also won with passers at different levels. Rodriguez's offense began as a Mouse Davis-style Run-and-Shoot at Glenville State, and he's adapted the system since then to the talent around him. Jed Drenning, Rodriguez's first quarterback at Glenville, threw for 4,329 yards in his senior season. One of his receivers, Chris George, set an all-college single-season record with 144 pass receptions. So it's not all just run.

RN vs. KD
I believe one of the reasons you are seeing action from RN is that he is an experienced, successful D-1 coach who knows what to do. He may or may not be working any harder that KD did, but he is doing different activities, activities that related to successful outcomes. KD did a lot of things. He just wasn't sure which ones worked and which ones didn't work. Imagine DW now with a competent HC. He just might simmer down, get behind his HC leadership, and become part of a success story in the making.

Message to 2008 class
I have to believe that this year's recruits read BN.  We need one of you guys to step forward and re-commit yourself to what Coach Neuheisel, Walker et. al. are creating at UCLA!  Call your buddies in the class and get them to join you in re-committing to the greatest university in the world.  It's a great time to be a Bruin!!

From the Detroit Free Press...
"No decision has been made," Debbie Mallett said Thursday night of her son, the freshman quarterback -- currently -- at Michigan.

"He's not a cure for cancer".
