Rocking & Rolling ...

Ben Ball warriors come out focused, intense and strong and run the Devils out of Pauley. Bruins BLOW OUT the Devils. The final score was 84-51. Here is the box score.

There were lot of reasons to celebrate tonight:

Bruins were dominant. DC continued his stellar play. Love was efficient. Josh was in rhythm. Westbrook returned to form.

Actually everyone contributed tonight in what was the most complete performance since the game against Washington State (who by the way were upset by Cal at home tonight).

All in all a great win for our Ben Ball warriors tonight on the day we are also marking Jackie Robinson's birthday.

Bruins will now need to build on this performance and get ready for the Standard on Saturday night.

Thread it up in our Ben Ball blow out victory thread.

GO BRUINS.

Finally made an account just to say: Thank you Grok.  You make an oregonian ucla-grad feel connected to the team and the school.

You're welcome!
Acknowledgments like yours really make it worthwhile knowing that it adds to Bruin fans everywhere.

And on that note, big props to Nestor and gang for the BN site in the first place. The timely and quality writing,  analysis and inside info beats the MSM hands down!

Great videos
Grok, I watched the whole game and I still love checking your videos. :D Can't wait to pass it around the office and send links to friends in the morning.

Arizona State
Looking to the West-wood, the "Ship..p" came in.  Know doubt it would and great to see. Go Bruins.

And on the other side of town
OJ2 scores 23 on 23 shots.

Shipp has 21 on 11 shots and Love has 20 on 11 shots.

It would have been interesting to see what OJ2 could have done on a real team with a real coach, but of course by the 8th grade OJ2 was probably uncoachable.  He might have been something special if he had had Coach helping him, or Coach Howland.  I hope justsc gets a dozen more just like him.

Great game
one of the better games we've played in a while. It was great to see the balanced scoring and for the first time all season, we consistently were able to get to the middle of the zone. We really turned the corner in our zone offense tonight.

We're going to see a 1-3-1 on Saturday like Michigan played so we're going to have to bring this same efficient and patient offense.

What a game
... to miss due to HW and midterms.

What a game to miss...
due to Feb club (N, ask your old UVa law buddies about that one) and the lack of TV coverage here. I certainly was surprised to see a 68-35 lead on sportscenter a while ago.

Then this will probably sound shallow..
..I know what it's like to be isolated in some corner of this country where they think UCLA is a daily smog report(get it?) and not have the Bruins on the tube, so I should be grateful to get the broadcast, I guess.

But I wish FSN/Prime Ticket/whatever would understand the teams they are broadcasting and not feel obliged to show those supposedly dramatic floor shots (yeah, I get it, the players' perspective) and the obligatory close-up of the guy who just made the last bucket -- completely missing a KL outlet pass and subsequent dunk. And then show some after-the-fact replay made by a fan with a handi-cam.

It is almost (almost!) as frustrating as listening to those old Fred Hessler calls; guaranteed to be four plays behind at any given time and launching into Big "O" tire spots at critical junctures.

That's it, I have officially reached curmudgeonhood.

Another Reason To Celebrate...
Season 4 of LOST premiered tonight! Any Lost fans out there?

Great win tonight, Bruins! I must say, I expected a dogfight with ASU, and we absolutely rolled them.

Hats off to Coach Howland for having the team ready to attack that zone!

GO BRUINS!

Mata-Real Hurt
Good season opener of Lost, shame there are only 7 more episodes this season.

Dohn is saying Lorenzo Mata-Real hurt his left wrist in the final minute of the game. X-rays tomorrow.

Another injury....
are you f-ing kidding me? Is there another contender that deals with more injuries than UCLA?  I know it's a byproduct of the intensity that they play, but c'mon, enough's enough.... big game Saturday! Go Bruins!

Injuries
never seem to end with this team, yet they keep winning. Mata Real can't stay healthy. I didn't get to see the game, sounds like they played great and looked sharp. Sucessfully attacked the zone and hit their 3s. Shipp back in form. ASU has played exceptional defense this year, holding most opponents under 60. Bruins shot almost 60% from the field! Held ASU to 38% and shut down Harden. All around nice game. Cal's victory over Wazzu helped, conference race looking good.  Looking forward to Saturday's game.

i love these games
fun to watch and no stress whatsoever

by jjreicher on Feb 1, 2008 2:04 AM PST reply actions

That is exactly the way we felt
way back in the 60's with Coach and all of those banner-winning teams.  It was a nice relaxing evening.  If you took a date to the game, the euphoria could yield pleasant benefits.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.  (Barnes, where are you?)

Free Food
Fox, I'm guessing you were around when the Walton gang was dismantling their pre-season opponents like OTM (O! The Mighty) Citadel and such. I was told by a bro' that the local Jack in the Crack would offer freebies depending on the Bruin score. I think anything over 90 got a bag of fries for students while eclipsing the century would yield up a burger. This would drive the faithful into a literal feeding frenzy, causing them to chant for the particular food item that was in reach.

Must have been a curious thing to be an opposing guard, bringing the ball up the court only to have the starving student section chanting "Hamburger! Hamburger!".

..was it not so?

by whp68 on Feb 1, 2008 7:01 AM PST up reply actions

it was Whopper time
in the mid and late 80's if we went over 100.

by ucladj89 on Feb 1, 2008 7:32 AM PST up reply actions

Whoppers
Whoppermania was still in effect during the mid-90s.  Whenever the score got close, the student section would start the "Whopper" chant.  I remember one game in particular where Kevin Dempsey hit an otherwise meaningless three pointer to seal the free  Whoppers, thus endearing himself to the fans for life.

Mickey D
In the mid-70's, hitting the century mark meant free Big Mac and fries at the McDonald's in the Village. When the score was 98-62 (as it often was in those days)and the building was half-empty, the students were going crazy with each Bruin possession. Must've been the munchies...

by 78Bruin on Feb 1, 2008 9:48 AM PST up reply actions

Now it is burrito time
Chipolte offers burritos free -- with a game ticket -- if we score 100!

When I was there (75-79) we chanted "we want a Big Mac" because McD's offered free Big Macs when the Bruins scored 100

Only problem is that we control tempo too much to get to a 100 now.

Go Team Go!
