Center Court: Ben Ball (Washington) Open Thread

Here we go. Almost game time.

Once agan our Ben Ball warriors take on a desperate team on the road who are going to come out and treat this game against UCLA as their national championship game of the season.

Bruins need to come out focused, poised, and composed. They will need to play their trademark defense, withstand an expected emotional onslaught from a dangerous Husky team, and keep things moving forward. In other words they need to follow his directions:

Remember that Shipp pass
that led to a score. He's been doing that a lot.

Not showy, but important.

I wonder if LMR is OK.

About time
K love on the scoreboard. Now only if DC can get going.

by bruinhoo on Feb 10, 2008 2:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

DC
never looks to score in the first half and usually, it's fine as he's setting up the offense. However, I wish he'd read the game a bit more and in the odd game where we're having issues (like this one) assert himself earlier.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 10, 2008 2:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
I agree. He's normally doing something else (setting up other guys, good D) when he's not scoring.

Can't afford Love to not get his though. Even if Shipp has stepped it back up.

by Raisin on Feb 10, 2008 2:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Keefe staying aggressive on offense. We need to get this down to one possession by the half.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 10, 2008 2:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Ref's are bad
but not reason we are losing.

We are not playing our D.

Offense is helter skelter.

Worst half I've seen us play this year.

One good half and we win
as bad as we were, we're close.

Keefe and Drago have added little.

A Grim First Half
Other than Westbrook, no one should feel good about how he played.  Collison (one FGA?!), in particular, played his worst half of the year.

What the hell is it about playing in Seattle?

by Dexter Fishmore on Feb 10, 2008 2:29 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Westbrook is just as bad
At least 3 turnovers by my count and probably more.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 2:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but...
At least Westbrook has put up 10 points and 4 rebounds.  He's coughed it up a few times, but at least he's aggressively looking to score when he gets in the paint.

by Dexter Fishmore on Feb 10, 2008 2:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And Westbrook's
hustling. He's working hard defensively and offensively...something the some of our team can't say.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 10, 2008 2:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dragovic is killing me
At least Keefe showed some heart on that putback. Drago was just a huge minus out there.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 2:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

His defense hasn't been great either
NO ONE should feel good about this first half.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 2:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

These are the games
that cost you #1 seeds. If our guys want to get that seed, they better gut this one out and come out with a win.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 2:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

UW: 128 RPI as of Saturday
Hard to argue for a #1 seed with a sub-100 RPI loss on the resume.

by bruinhoo on Feb 10, 2008 2:36 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree
We need to slow the tempo of this game and make U-Dub play some defense.  They thrive on helter skelter type of ball.  This also doesn't allow our defense to set up.  Too many open drives to the rim which also resulted in tons of offensive rebounds.  Too many turnovers too.  MAN UP and get it done!

by BlueReign on Feb 10, 2008 2:36 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

They are imposing their will on the game
Creating the chaotic environment you describe that they like to play in. DC and Westbrook need to control the game, slow it down, and let the rest of our guys get to work.

We've had poor first halves before.
Perhaps not this bad, this year, excepting Texas, where we were down 12.

We came back.

We've been a second half team.

Somebody(ies) needs to step up.

I don't doubt that somebody will.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Feb 10, 2008 2:36 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Love Will Carry Us
He's 1 for 4 now.

Missing put backs.

I think he'll power us through.

We can shoot poorly if KLove is there to put it back in. He will. He always does.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Feb 10, 2008 2:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This is my concern
Helter Skelter neutralizes the impact that Love can have on the game.  He's too busy trailing plays instead of facilitating the O.

It's not the Refs
What do you expect?  We're not going to get the 50/50 calls.  We're the road team.  That was clearly a foul on Shipp.  The guys need to focus, don't bitch, don't get into extra stuff with U-Dub, play defense, REBOUND and let our play speak for itself.  Our disappearing defense and rebounding is the reason we are getting our asses handed to us and not the refs.

they're out toughing and out hustling us. Don't blame this crap on the refs. You mention the refs every game. It's not them. It's us. They're taking it to us and we're not fighting back.

let SUC blame it on the refs.  when we lose it's because we played an "outstanding" team.

Truth hurts
They are "out-toughing" us.  They are playing with more passion and as if their season depended on it.  We're out there expecting UDub to fold and hand over the W.

Oh my god the stars have aligned
the refs called a shooting foul!

by tsunugundam on Feb 10, 2008 3:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Just got home...
... what's up with all the fouls?

Geezus, we'd better take a deep breath and get something happening here.

by bruinchick on Feb 10, 2008 3:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Aboya and Shipp doubled on the baseline
while DC stood and watched. When they got the ball out of the double and started in transition, DC started jogging down while Dentmon sprinted. Dentmon got the ball and hit the jumper.

With that kind of effort, DC doesn't deserve to be on the court.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 10, 2008 3:11 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

One of the worst games
I've seen him play thus far. If we're going to win, he needs to be a part of it.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 3:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No D = No Chance
Grabbing a f'n defensive rebound would be nice too.

by BlueReign on Feb 10, 2008 3:11 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

we're down
because the ball isn't going through the hoop even on open looks.

I agree that the refs are missing some calls.  However, you'll look like a loser if you claim that cost us the game.  That's why I like Howland -- he will congratulate the UW and move one... if we lose this one.

by bruinofthenorth on Feb 10, 2008 3:12 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

They are missing obvious ones
We deserve better as a conference. Still isn't the reason we're losing though.

I think Love is doing what he can at this point
It's DC that needs to show up from this point on to make the big push.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 3:16 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Love is definitely battling.
DC, however, is having a nightmare game.  He needs to collect himself and make some plays.

by Dexter Fishmore on Feb 10, 2008 3:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Explain this to me,
Sincerely -- why Keefe and Drago instead of LMR?

Especially when they are handling us on the boards and inside.

by Class of 66 on Feb 10, 2008 3:16 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Keefe Maybe
But I see no reason why Drago is in ahead of Mata-Real.

by Tydides on Feb 10, 2008 3:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps
because they are quicker, more able to guard on the perimeter.

Wow
Westbrook is 5 for 15 in FGs? Ugh.

by Raisin on Feb 10, 2008 3:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

5 of 15
Is third best on the team, after Aboya's 2-2 and Shipp's 8-14

Airballing a layup?

Get LMR in for Keefe. Although it did seem like a BS call considering what Love has gone through thus far.

We are getting killed on the boards. How uncharacteristic of us.

DC, have faith, each shot is a new game. Look forward not back.

Bad D
and no 3-pt shots going in.

by Raisin on Feb 10, 2008 3:28 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

0-12 from behind the arc
Pathetic. If we hit those at our normal rate, we are up by 4 right now.

Get a freaking defensive rebound.

GRAB THE DAMN BOARD
They're going to get 6 FTAs in one possession. We don't deserve to win this.

Open 3s!
Why can't we make any????

we're not playing D at all, so we're not getting it back

Our players ought to be ashamed of themselves for this effort.

Just shameful.

Dentmon & Overton
are giving it to DC.  He doesn't look confident with the ball and our offense is being initiated around halfcourt.  Can't grab a rebound, getting out hustled and our defense is non-existent.

by BlueReign on Feb 10, 2008 3:34 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

by bruinchick on Feb 10, 2008 3:46 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Isn't that what the walk-ons are for?
I don't think losing Robinson or Schmidt for a game or two would have killed us, though Howland is far to classy to pull such a move.

Nothing to see there. GEtting nearly head-butted by Overton though, that's a technical, son.

We didn't deserve to win
they out hustled us for 40 minutes.

I'm most disappointed in DC though. I've lost a lot of respect for him today. It's one thing to have an off day or make a mental mistake, but to just not try. There's no excuse for that. If I had the talent of Telemachus I'd pull up 4 or 5 plays where he just watched the play and jogged while everyone else was running. While the entire team got outworked, he just didn't seem to care.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 10, 2008 3:49 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Maybe he's hurt.
Or broke up with his girlfriend. Wooden used to say that when a player had a bad game it was usually because he had an argument with his girlfriend.

by Chandler on Feb 10, 2008 3:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bad games happen
a lack of effort or caring is an insult to your character.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Feb 10, 2008 3:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Hear, hear
Players have bad games.  It happens.  It doesn't mean they're bad human beings.

by Dexter Fishmore on Feb 10, 2008 3:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Shame on UCLA
We played like b***s.  We got punked up and down the court.  We showed no heart.  No fight to grab tough rebounds, to hustle for every inch on the court, didn't D up.  We simply got owned.  F'n embarassing and disgusting.

by BlueReign on Feb 10, 2008 3:51 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Just a bad game...
This sure was ugly today...

by RScal on Feb 10, 2008 3:51 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

While this loss is disgusting..
I can't think of a better time for it to happen but a week before SUC in their home court. We need Luc back and the team pissed from losing to the 2nd worst record in Pac-10.

by lildre on Feb 10, 2008 3:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

That's what Arizona thought
After the Bruins destroyed them, they were all sure that it was a wake up call and that they would respond by mopping the floor with ASU.  Didn't work out too well for them.

But yeah, they REALLY need Luc back.

by LA Seitz on Feb 10, 2008 4:07 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If we are a championship caliber team
We shouldn't need losing to wake up--especially since we lost to USC so recently.

by dokein on Feb 10, 2008 4:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not too much to say on this one
The outcome reflected the effort that was put into this one.

by bruinhoo on Feb 10, 2008 3:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Collison
Collison better think twice about turning pro.  His inconsistency, fragility, seeming lack of mental toughness puts him well below a first round pick.  No points in the first half at WSU.  NO SHOTS in the first half today.  This team needs his shots.  No excuse for 35% shooting average when we have Kevin Love.
