CRN and PC agree to home uniforms for rivalry game

link here

According to Tracy Pierson of BruinReportOnline.com, Neuheisel and Trojan coach Pete Carroll have agreed to have each team wear home uniforms when the two rivals meet on Dec. 6 at the Rose Bowl.

Before 1982, the teams had a tradition: Both teams would wear their home uniforms. UCLA would don its home blue jerseys and USC would wear its home red. But in that year, the NCAA ruled that the visiting team must wear away uniforms. Since then, the visiting team has worn white to avoid a penalty and a forfeited time-out in the first half.

Neuheisel and Carroll have reportedly agreed that the home team will take a time-out to offset the one the visitors must forfeit. The penalty will be declined. The agreement is said to be set to last as long as Neuheisel and Carroll remain coaches of the respective schools.

I was already looking forward to the rivalry game this year at the Rose Bowl. It will be interesting to see how the trOJans react to Chow on the sidelines. I'm really excited now to know that the game will feature home colors.

I hate to repeat all the fanboy talk around here, but CRN has shown a tremendous amount of effort in getting people excited about UCLA football again. To have reached out to Sneaky Pete after only being here a short time speaks volumes about Neuheisel's ability to get things done in LA.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

The ncaa continues on its quest
I can only assume that the ncaa is on a quest to become the most ridiculous organization in the history of mankind.  It has a rule about what colors teams must wear and which cannot be changed even by agreement.  The rule will not allow the continuation of a tradition that were a staple of a rivalry between a University and an alleged college for years.  And the rule actually gets enforced.  What is the reason for the rule, you might ask.  Forget it.  There is no reason.

The ncaa is the governing body in another revenue generating sport which most people call basketball (but which in Washington is called faceball, but I digress.)  In that sport, where it is important for players to quickly distinguish friend from foe in a split second using only peripheral vision, one team can wear white and another can wear off-white, and it's OK.

That same organization stands Kelvin Sampson up against a wall and asks if he wants a blindfold and a cigarette for talking to kids who he wants to come to his school.  But that look like the Three Stooges imitating the Keystone Cops when it comes to taking any action against the school that overtly pays its athletes and has for years.

If I were the Chancellor, I would get with some of my Chancellor buddies and start talking about a different direction.  The ncaa is broken, and appears to be beyond fixing.  If I were Chancellor Block I would explore creating a new body.  He would need to convince about a dozen big schools, and that would be that.  justsc would never join, but who can blame them for not wanting to opt out of a system that has let them cheat for decades.  But I have a solution for them, too.  justsc can join the World Wrestling Federation, an organization win which they would be right at home.

That's why I was surprised when I saw this
CTS and PC tried to do this a couple of years ago but the NCAA said no.

Not Quite
I think the NCAA said it would not suspend the rule depriving the visiting team of a timeout. We can now infer that it was Karl who nixed the idea, unwilling to give up the ability to burn through three timeouts in the first quarter.

More NCAA Insanity
LSU wears white jerseys for its home games. Did the NCAA waive the rule for LSU? If so, how come they couldn't waive it for a traditional game played once a year?

Just a rhetorical question, mind you.

The rule was adjusted
and it was only that one team must wear white and the other a color. The home team gets to choose so if LSU wants to wear white at home they can. If UCLA wants to wear white at home, they can too.

Begs the question...
If they made that adjustment, then why not allow adjustment for specific games (i.e., rivalry games)?

You're trying to understand
the NCAA's logic. That's never a good idea.

You're being a bit charitable
By even referring to it as "logic" in the first place.

Awesome
There was some talk about doing this last year between Dorrell and PC. I'm glad to see it finally come to fruition.

It's quite a spectacle to the school's don both home unis. This is a unique rivalry that should stand out amongst all the rest.

No f@^*#in Way!
It's like CRN read my mind. This hiring is fast becoming better than my best Christmas. It gives me that feeling that there is a good chance your are going to get that gift you really wanted as a child and after you have unwrapped it and decided Christmas can stop right there and you will be happy enough you keep unwrapping gift after incredible gift.

This has been a dream of mine to walk into the Masoleum wearing the home colors, announcing to the world however subtly that this is our town and we're here to prove it.

This is a special time my brothers, a special time indeed.

PS: Since we are in the business of reviving and creating new traditions. How great would it be if The Serving Spoon in Inglewood became the defacto Signing Day location for announcements and celebration site? Had I known it was going to happen that way, I would have been there in a heartbeat. Can you imgaine the UCLA Alumni Marching band showing up every year on signing day and playing The Sons of Westwood?

I mean why the hell not? Clearly anything is possible now.

This is very cool
Coach Neuheisel has been pitch perfect so far this year.  He has hired a high quality staff, with 2 high profile coordinators.  He has secured a talented and tight knit incoming class, thanks in part to the previous staff.  He has actively worked the media to ensure UCLA Football is a recognized and respected name.

He has given praise to the players, his new staff, and to his predecessor.  All the while he has deflected and shared any accolades sent his way.  Case in point, many apparel brands tried to get his permission to carry UCLA merchandise with his name on it.  There was even talk of a throwback replica jersey with his name/number similar to the Aikman jerseys from a few years ago.  Coach Neuheilsel said no.  He didn't want to distract from the team.

This latest move is yet another reason for me to gush about him.  This is very cool, and makes the rivalry all the more fun because it emphasizes how special it really is.  I can't wait.

Boo
Stupid idea. I don't want those ass holes wearing their home uniform in our stadium.

But...
We'll get to wear our uniforms in their stadium next year. You reap what you sow!

yes but...
I don't expect Cheaty Pete to decline the penalty.

For all the lawyers...
Theoretically, couldn't Neuheisel or someone come up with a contract for Carroll, forcing him to keep the agreement?

by jaffa on Feb 16, 2008 1:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Two things
First, I would absolutely positively be thrilled to represent Coach Neuheisel in that lawsuit.  The first thing I would do is depose Cheatie Petie, and we would quickly get his answers under oath about bu$hgate.

Second, the lawsuit which you envision would go nowhere.  That kind of a contract would be for an illegal purpose (to do something which violates some goofy ncaa rule) and that sort of K is unenforcible.

But I would still take the case.  And of course there would be no fee.

Actually, Fox
CRN has his law degree.  Of course, I've heard that even the best lawyers don't represent themselves.

During the Timeout
will the two teams huddle in the middle of the field, each huddle inching closer and closer until the referees have to jump in and throw flags for unsportsmanlike conduct?

What Penalty?
I read the 2007 rule book and there does not appear to be penalty for not wearing contrasting color uniforms. The rule 1-4-3 does state that visiting team must wear a white jersey. The home team can wear white jerseys if there is an agreement with the visiting team before the season starts.

However, if a player is not wearing required equipment (1-4-4) or wearing illegal equipment (1-4-5), there is a penalty. The team is charged a timeout for each incident and if the team has no timeout, then a 5 yard penalty is enforced. I don't see any mention of only one timeout charged. In addition, the section for applying violation timeout does not even mention rule 1-4-3 but does mention the others.

From the rules, contrasting color uniforms is neither required equipment or illegal equipment.

So is the rulebook missing a paragraph? I haven't read the whole rulebook, but so far I can't find a penalty for not wearing contrasting color uniforms. Can someone else read the rules and come up with an interpretation?

Here is the link to the rules:
