Happy Birthday from your Nation, the Bruin Nation.

We just have 4 regular season games left with LMR with the last 2 at Pauley.

Whatever happens LMR is going to leave UCLA as one of my all time favorite Bruins.

He is part of the class that started the process of reestablishing the natural order in college basketball universe. No matter what happens LMR has been a winner, is a winner, and in my eyes will leave as a winner out of Westwood.

Happy birthday big guy.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE:Because the Nation demanded this:

Guys like this rarely get a shot at the NBA but I'll tell you something--Lo Mata-Real is a ferocious defender, great blocker especially for his height, and will do whatever a coach asks. He's a liability at the line and from outside, but he's very good in deep and is a smart player. Shooting can be worked at, and often is improved when a player cares about it (Shaq when he had a FT coach, Farmar this year, etc.). Mata-Real's not going to change a franchise, but I think he's an absolutely fantastic guy to have around, and I hope someone gives him a shot.

With his work ethic and dedication
LMR will be successful in whatever endeavor he undertakes as a professional.

Good question about future career
Happy birthday to the big guy.  A true warrior, no doubt about it, and a real credit to the program.

LMR has really evolved and is a solid, solid player.  Playing behind Love and not getting minutes and a couple of injuries have kept him from getting the opportunities and recognition he deserves.  He can rebound and defend and he's obviously a very hard worker.  I would have liked to see him get more minutes on the floor with Love, who would probably be best at getting LMR the ball in good position down low.

LMR should have some pretty good pro prospects.  Maybe not the NBA, but why not?  He's a strong, tough player coming out of a great program, he has steadily improved over 4 years, and he didn't really get a chance to show his stuff as a senior.  Some good minutes in the tournament could also help him--let's not forget where Hollins was at this time of year when he was a senior.

And
I'm guessing Dicki V's health insurance didn't cover the throat surgery, because he just sunk to a new low by appearing in a God awful hooters commercial.

Apologize for drifting off topic
He's been doing Hooters ads for awhile now.

The Burbank Hooters is the offical headquarters for the Univ of Florida "So Cal Gators Club."  I really hate walking in there and seeing Gator crap everywhere.

But they have a beer I like on tap, so I still stop by from time to time.  (There's something else that draws me in too.  Can't place my finger on it...or they'll kick me out.)

A Solid Ben Ball Warrior
Happy Birthday, LMR. And thanks for your 4 years of sacrificing your body, playing 110%, doing whatever was asked of you, graciously and honorably stepping aside for the freshman phenom, and most importantly, taking that picture with those babes in Maui! (anyone still have that picture?)

Happy Birthday Lo
Your dedication over the past four years has been inspiring. Moreover, your willingness to do whatever has been asked of you by Coach Howland is greatly appreciated by all of us in BN. Whether you end up playing BBall in the NBA, Europe or choosing a different career path, we wish you the best of luck. And remember: once a Bruin, always a Bruin.

Happy Birthday Lo
Hope to see some pics of you in Hawaii w/ the Laker girls this summer.  (Actually one of the Laker girls is a former UCLA dancer, so I guess it would be a reunion of sorts.)

Happy Birthday, Lorenzo!
Lo-Ma is an outstanding example of the kind of player I am PROUD to call a fellow Bruin.

This guy broke his nose twice and his leg in service of the Blue and Gold.  Maybe not the flashiest athlete on God's earth, this guy gave all he had -- his strength, his quickness, his hustle, his court sense -- game in and game out, never complaining, always working.

If ANYONE has earned the right to have an Ed O'Bannon kiss-the-court moment in his last game at Pauley, it's THIS guy.

Come on, Nestor, put up the picture of our boy Zo kicking it poolside with the hotties in Hawaii.  It's his birthday, man!  ;-)

Lo, A man of great character
I love Lo because he is so dedicated, hard working and humble.  He lives by Coach Wooden's principles and goes about his business without any bravado.  He doesn't care about personal glory and is always the first to cheer on his teammates, especially KLove who took his job.  But most of all, he came from very humble beginnings being the son of a single mom in South Gate with no father around.  To see him excel at UCLA is an inspiration to all of us, not just the homeboys in the 'hood. LO-- you, my brother are the definition of Bruin Warrior.

Who doesn't love LMR?
If you're a Bruin fan, it is impossible not to love this guy and the way he plays.  A class act, one of my all time favorites.  But then again, it's hard not to really like almost all the guys BH has brought to westwood.  Even so, LRM is one of those standouts for all the reasons mentioned on this thread.

Happy Birthday Lorenzo...

I think N really got it right
Mata-Real is the real thing, and will be successful if a pro team is smart enough to sign him, or if a pro company signs him or if he decides to venture out on his own.  I can imagine him missing a free throw from time to time, but I can't imagine him failing to take his hard work and dedication with him wherever he goes.  And that will take him a long way.  I think Coach would be proud to call him a Bruin brother, and that's the highest accolade I can think of.

Haha
I've noticed that...someone should start a running diary on the ever changing status' of LMR..sorry to everyone that really doesn't get that or doesn't like facebook...the one cool thing about it though is seeing the players off the court and that they're real college students and real people like the rest of us

We should all wear headbands to his final game
All of Pauley in thanks.  Wish the AD had arranged a give away from Adidas.  Should have done if for Kapono as well.

Have to wear it over our ears in tribute.

Go Team Go!

Kapono just doesn't look right without one
It always seems more natural when I just draw a white line on his forehead in MSPaint.

An Inspiration to the Hispanic Community...
I've read and heard time and again about how he has become an inspiration to those who look up to him. He has been great asset to the UCLA basketball and its community. I wish him the best should he coninue onto the nba or pursuit a different avenue...

Don't judge a book by its cover...
is what mamma always said.  But I have to admit, I was one of, I presume many, who found it hard to look at him.  But his blue-collar work ethic, team-first attitude is undenyable and quickly won me over.  While I still hold my breath and cringe when he shoots free throws, that poolside photo made me a believer and confirmed that a big heart and a mountain of charm, can win over even the most beauty conscious fans in LA and on the Hawaiian Islands.

You go LO!!  Many happy returns and thanks for the past and future memories you will certainly bring to the Bruin faithful.

Happy Birthday Lo
You are a first-rate example of a great Bruin warrior--always ready to take the floor and go to work for the team.  I love watching you play the game, and I truly hope to see you playing pro next year.

Center of it all
Couple of things I've noticed is that Lorenzo is always leading pregame rituals. The TV cameras will often catch Lo in the center of the circle of Bruins during pre-game warmups. He is always leading the pregame chants and rituals. I think leads me to believe that Lorenzo in many ways has been a leader on the floor and in the locker room.

Also I checked out the summer league this past summer in Hollywood. I got to see Roll and Lo play. He had a ton of friends and family there cheering him on which was at least 1/4 of the gym. He was also nice enough to take a picture with us. Happy b-day and Lo have the cheerleaders sing you the mananitas!
