Tuesday Ben Ball Roundup
By now I'm sure you've all seen the Hubert Davis (UNC alum) segment on Sports Center predicting a WKU upset over the Bruins on Thursday. Davis' "analysis" (which strains the definition of the word) is part of an already tired MSM theme that seems to be the story de jour--that is, but for some grand conspiracy by NCAA referees, the Bruins would not have received a number 1 seed and would not have advanced to the Sweet 16.
While annoying, I hope these idiots keep blathering away about how "lucky" the Bruins are and how easy their bracket is. It's just a little more motivation to go out and step on WKU's throats.
On to the news.
Our favorite pro-UCLA beat writer Brian Dohn has a feature on WKU's style of play. The Hilltoppers will likely push the tempo and look for the 3:
It is a formula the Hilltoppers used to nearly beat Gonzaga and Tennessee earlier this season, had success with in defeating Michigan, and will use that guard-oriented breakneck approach when they make their first Sweet 16 appearance in 15 years.
...
The Hilltoppers have 6-foot-9, 190-pound sophomore Jeremy Evans and 6-9, 260-pound D.J. Magley to guard Love, and the lack of inside presence makes it even more imperative the Hilltoppers (29-6) force a fast-paced game with plenty of 3-point shooting, which they excel at.
Western Kentucky is 18th in the nation in 3-point percentage (39.4), and ranks 31st in scoring (77.3 ppg).
"They're a pressing team that runs and jumps all the time," Howland said. "They run and jump and double team the ball both in the backcourt, early, they'll also do it once you cross halfcourt. They will double all on-ball screens. They play primarily pressure man-to-man defense."
...
NBA scouts have been following Western Kentucky's leading scorer, 6-5 senior guard Courtney Lee, much of the season, and as Adras said, the 3-point shooting can be the "great equalizer" in the tournament.
Lee is shooting 40.4 percent from 3-point range and averaging 20.3 points per game. He scored 29 in the NCAA Tournament's second round defeat of No. 13 seed San Diego, but he is not the lone outside threat.
Senior guards Ty Rogers (37.4 percent) and Tyrone Brazelton (41.7 percent), both starters, and reserves A.J. Slaughter (44 percent) and Orlando Mendez-Valdez (39.4 percent) each shoot 3-pointers.
"Lee is just a big-time player, and then Brazelton is very, very good," Howland said. "He's about as quick as anybody we've seen all year."
Steve Greenburg of The Sporting News also chimes in regarding the respective teams' game plans for Thursday:
Western Kentucky's game plan: The Hilltoppers must do whatever is needed to make UCLA point guard Darren Collison give up the ball, using half-court and full-court traps and lots and lots of ball pressure. The Hilltoppers also would be wise to let All-American center Kevin Love take all the perimeter jumpers he can hoist; WKU certainly can't handle Love on the low block. And there is reason to believe Shipp will continue to misfire. UCLA is so strong defensively that Lee might have to play decoy for shooters Tyrone Brazelton and Ty Rogers.
Many are wondering what is going on with Josh Shipp. According to Diane Pucin at LAT, Josh has been furiously working on his shot:
I am confident that Josh will find his groove in one of these games. We all know what an absolute terror on opposing defenses he can become once that shot starts to fall.
Thursday is going to be a batttle. Everyone in the US that does not have UCLA connections is going to be rooting for the Cinderella Hilltoppers. Accordingly, if you can make it to Phoenix, help turn the arena Bruin Blue.
Go Bruins.

Thanks for the insightful analysis.
I'm suddenly looking forward to this game a lot more.

Just checked out WKU's roster.
I'm not saying this game is a gimme. No game is a gimme, especially in the tournament. I'm just saying that Keven Love presents the Hilltopers with a huge match-up problem.

Good analysis Ajax
When the A&M line opened at -10.5 I thought it was completely insane--everyone knew it would be much more competitive than that simply due to matchups. This line opened at -12 which I still find to be excessive this time of the year, but I can understand it much more than that A&M line.
In fairness

Hopefully the Hilltoppers come out running

Three point defense will be key. We're usually good at limiting threes, but we've had some times when we didn't do a great job.
We should kill them on the boards, hopefully we can get some offensive contributions from more than 2 players, and maybe some more quality bench minutes.

nba prospects
Granted, some of the games were pretty darn close, but so were a lot of our other games. I just feel the NBA aspect is a little overblown and could also hurt a team if the player thinks he has to do too much (e.g., OJ Mayo).
Agree
These boys can shoot. If they penetrate and successfully dish, and make their 3s (which they are very good at) w/ regularity, we might be in trouble. Probably not a bad idea to focus on shutting down Lee, and see how the other two do first.
I think we'll be able to see how well we'll do after the first 7-10 min. of the game. If by that point we've showed we can slow them down, and they aren't shooting well b/c of our D, so long as we play a decent offensive game, I don't see us losing this one ("So long" being the operative words.)

Laser love passes
Guard Play
Next year, we have 3 highly recruited guards- Jrue, Malcom, Jerime, but we might lose both of our centers- Love, Lorenzo.
BTW, Jrue is the real deal, comparable to Dwayne Wade. Good kid too! I can see us using the press next year and even using a pressure zone-ala the amoeba defense UNLV used in the early 90's.
I just loved that defense!
I don't know if we want to run with WKU (it might look like the Lakers-GSW games) or have a shootout. We will do better to slow it down and have Love & Mata score points in the paint and foul their bigs out.
In regards to MSM, I was just thinking that now Duke is out, they want to use a "name team" to be the good-bad guy (Yankees, Lakers, Manchester United, Duke). The use it to gain attention and increase ratings. Just a thought!
Go Bruins!

we should run as much as possible
However, I think we should run as much possible against WKU. Frankly, it is WKU that is in real danger if they come in with a shootout mentality because they will end up with quick shots, no offensive rebounds, and quick counters by the Bruins.
I agree with everybody who says this is a much better match up for the Bruins relative to the Aggies. Obviously this doesn't mean it will be a cake walk, but it should be a much different style game than against A&M.
I'm not saying WKU has bad guards.

Injury prone?
DC was injured at the beginning of the season and hasn't been since. He plays in the mid to high 30's as far as minutes, which isn't something you can do if you're in foul trouble all the time. The backcourt depth issue is legit, but their other reasons are complete crap, and even in the best possible light for WKU, this is a push.
Probably consulted with the PAC-10 guys

Hubert Davis...
WKU will have to shoot very well to win. That said, they might since they have 3 good shooters. But the Bruins seem to have a way of making sure that doesn't happen.

Who cares?
That being said, Hubris may end up being right, but so what? He doesn't get any cookies from anyone for that...does he? Our boys had better be prepared, because 1) I (and they) would hate to lose, and 2) I would hate for someone like Hubert Davis to be "right".

Offense
I'm not a huge fan of Bob Knight, but he is still a great coach. In a recent article, he stated that Coach Howland should receive immense credit for the team's success because UCLA is lacking talent in some areas. The position that we have lacked is the very athletic swingman that is about 6-5 or 6-7 and can create their own shot.
AA and Josh have been excellent in this role, but they were limited during the last 2 tourneys because they relied too much on Jordan & Darren to create shots for them. Teams with athletic defenders can shadow and shut out our small forwards.
We might see a transformation in our offense and defense in the upcoming years. Coach knows how to use his personnel.
I see James and Chace blowing up next year.
Go Bruins!

MRI Results?
Anyone know when the test is and when the results will be back?
I take it Luc's not practicing at all until we know what's up.
Does the MRI look for the kind of structural damage that gets worse if he "toughs it out"? Is the idea to make sure there is no permanent damage?
Can one have no pain and swelling and still have an injury that is enhanced by play?
When we say precautionary, are we saying he might feel strong enough to play but we won't let him because doing so would be dangerous?
More than for our chances, I wish the best for Luc -- I hope it shows there's no threat of real damage and that he can make play if he feels up to it.

MRI's Can Show
I have to believe that they're doing this to determine the exact cause of the increased swelling, and to light up any tears that could "go all the way" if it starts to roll again.
Advisory: I am NOT a medical professional of ANY kind. I had a very, very bad ligament tear in my right ankle from rolling it, which eluded diagnosis, then I spent eight weeks in a cast, then a walking boot thing, then physical therapy, etc. I'm just repeating what I was told over the course of this mess.
I want Luc to be ok and safe before he goes out there.
