Luck?

I have been reading and watching a lot of people say how lucky UCLA has been lately and how maybe there is some grand conspiracy out there to push us further and further in the tournament.

I understand that to the outsider, things have looked a little fishy lately but there is more to the situation than meets the eye.

Stanford:  DC draws a foul that allows him to make 2 free throws and push the game to overtime.  All the media pictures show the play from the head up, completely ignoring the fact that the ref called the foul for Body Contact.  Later, it comes out that there was a foul but the call was inappropriate, what?  Are referees only supposed to call fouls when the game is not in the balance and ignore everything during the final minute of the game?

Cal: A foul is not called in the corner giving UCLA the ball with time for Josh Shipp to make his circus shot over the corner of the backboard.  This one has been addressed by several people already and even Cal fans have noted that the play in the corner was clean.  As for the shot, it did violate the written rules but the referees allowing it is not unprecedented (thanks Oregon).  Here, I think we did get lucky.

Texas A&M: Josh Shipp blocks a shot that could have tied the game and pictures show that he got a good helping of arm along the way.  A&M fans are screaming all over that this should have been called a foul and that the tournament's worst free throw shooting team would have tied the game up and possibly won in overtime.  Watching this game live, I wasn't sure but I thought that this was a clean block, especially since the refs had been swallowing their whistles all game.  The refs let the players play and it got rough several times inside the paint and there were plenty of instances where I screamed at the television about fouls that were not being called.

So it was a loosely called game and the play was hard to see so quickly.  But more importantly, didn't we learn in the Stanford game that referees aren't supposed to make calls like that in the final seconds of a game?  Didn't ESPN go on a rampage about how, even if it was a foul, it was close enough and important enough that the referees should have not called anything.  Now all of a sudden, because following the rules they had been spewing all week would benefit UCLA, referees are supposed call close fouls late in the game.  There were 3 players in position to block that shot and Shipp made a great play to get it first.

People who scream loudly about bad refereeing need to remember that referees watch television and read about sports on the internet too.  Instead of complaining about them taking your advice when your team gets hurt, think of the irony and laugh.  You may have influenced the game and helped eliminate what you loudly called bad officiating, only to have your recommendations beat your team.  Everyone should be so lucky.  Here at BN we have been trying to get something done about the terrible referees that plague the PAC-10 for years.

Now, if I am totally off base and this has been a giant conspiracy to get UCLA another championship, I will happily swear off complaining about referees for the next 5 years and only say positive things about the tireless, selfless, and all around wonderful human beings who work so tirelessly to make sure that athletic contests are played fairly (I'm not sure I could last any longer than that).

As to the question about whether we have been lucky, I think we have.  But I am not sure that we would not have won these games anyways.  This team is always prepared and Howland's teams have always shown their ability to win close games after it looks like all hope has been lost.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

It might be the opposite I think
None of these calls deserved the attention and scrutiny they got. The myth is perpetuated by the media that is too lazy to do the research themselves. They see a narrative about UCLA being favored and don't bother to see if it's actually true because the narrative is the easy story to write.

This of course plays into the hands of the fans of teams that are scared of us. In a Phil Jackson-esque way, they want to plant the seeds of doubt in future ref crews minds that if you don't make calls against UCLA, then you will be a part of the "problem" that is fictional in the first place. The level of the fake indignation out there is just a measure of the fear that these other teams will not be able to beat us in a fairly called contest so they have to trot out their "preeemptive strike".

Well, just like what Yoda said,
"... Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." I'm pretty sure we're in the level of anger or hatred right now. Of course, if we do win it all (hopefully), the fans of the other teams and the naysayers would feel the suffering.

any ideas?
I know this is unrelated to this topic, but it seems like there are no good sports bars to watch the games in Los Angeles area (with the exception of   the bar in westwood), whereas orange county has so many nice sports bars to see games. I always wondered why that is. My friends and I are looking every year for a place with big screen TV's to watch the tournament games, does anybody have any suggestions?

Get you own Big Screen TV
and invite your friends over to watch.  Even after fully stocking your bar, you'll probably come out way ahead.

I agree that
we got lucky with Cal, I think the stanford call on the body was because the stanford charge wasn't called on their possession.

The aTm game had bad officiating throughout, so not sure how I would evaluate the end, other than saying the officials were inconsistant the whole game, including the end.

I agree
I have been saying the samething to all the critics around me....i even put up a post on cbs when someone called out UCLA...not sure why people just like to bash teams/things they are afraid of...

I was at the game and from my perspective
It looked like a pretty clean block--it happened so fast (as someone above pointed out) that one second Sloan (?) is driving towards the basket, the next the ball pops out and Russel's got it and is dunking.  I never had a doubt in my mind that we would get the stop, so maybe my judgment was clouded?  Of course, none other than the Trojan Times was the first to trumpet the infamous picture of Josh apparently grabbing Sloan's arm on that last block...what do you expect I guess?

One other thing I was suprised at during the game re: officiating was the amount of contact the zebras were letting go below the basket all game--for example, KLove's streak of blocks would have been called fouls in the Pac-10--and some of the traveling calls on Luc seemed a bit sketchy (not to mention the call against Collison when he got tackled by aTm player in the 2nd half).  It also seemed that quite a few times the refs made the wrong call (both ways) when balls were deflected out of bounds.

I think we just say the officiating for both games in Anaheim on Saturday (our game and the Stanford game) was extremely poor and let the chips fall where they may.  The good teams find ways to win even when the zebras are seemingly sabotaging them every step of the way.

I thought the same thing, Rhapsode
The Stanford no-call backlash could have helped us by training officials to swallow their whistles unless a foul is egregious.

I also pointed out to a friend that in the last 5:50, only 3 fouls were called (all by UCLA), so it's not like the officials were just making calls in our favor. It was more that they were letting a lot of contact happen, and Josh's block/lovetap did not rise to the level of what was called a foul in that game.

For those who like to say there's a conspiracy favoring us, I suggest you mock them with humor along these lines:

UCLA gets every call in every game because the officials are conspiring to make sure that they get a national championship, even though the team, without this conspiracy, would merely be an NIT team. This is in part due to a large cash payment that Stan Love made to several NCAA officials who usually work games in the west, along with having his brother give outgoing NCAA head of officials Hank Nichols the rights to all Beach Boys music and lyrics as a retirement gift.

lol, we should really spread that rumor
then see how stupid these naysayers are by believing something so inredible.

Brian Dohn
The LA Times isn't the only that's gone overboard. There are multiple entries about the play on Brian Dohn's blog including the last two. It's freaking Tuesday and the MSM has moved on but ol Dohn hasn't. Geez.

To be fair,
it is Jill Painter this time, who is independent  of Brian Dohn.  Brian himself hasn't talked about it more, after the huge backlash on his blog (with the exception a couple of his obsequious idiot-friends defending him against the backlash).

It is too bad in a way, I thought Jill Painter was better.  Sure showed me!

Boo-frickity-hoo to all of the complainers
This is just sports. I want every call for my team and none for the other. I am not going to feel bad because a few calls go our way. In fact, I would love it if it were true and referres did lean our way on questionable calls. But I know that isn't the truth. Calls tend to favor the aggressor. And the Bruins put themselves in that good position.

Besides that. Calls still don't make the final decision in a game. Stanford should have played better in OT. Cal should have pulled away when they had the chance. A&M should have run a better play. We fought and clawed for those victories harder than our oppenent. I'm not going to apologize to any nah-sayer for that.

And as far as being lucky? I don't consider all of the injuries we've had to be good luck. But we play on! Which is the best advise I can give to the other 15 teams. JUST PLAY ON!

That's true
I don't think any team that has one starter with a giant ankle and another one with strep and an important role player off the bench sidelined for the year going into the most important game of the year can be considered "lucky". If that's lucky, I'd rather be unlucky any day.

Nice...
esp. the wishing the refs did favor us part.
