UCLA v. WKU: 2008 Sweet 16 Open Game Thread

OK, I win the award for lack of productivity today. I'm sure you are all as psyched-up about this game as I am.

All week I have been trying to come up with a thoughtful and creative theme for this week's open game thread. However, sometimes the most appropriate way to say something is the most obvious:

The Bruins need to make a statement tonight.

AA2 making a statement last year against KU.

They need to make a statement that they will not be "run off the floor" by the Hilltoppers.

They need to make a statement that Josh Shipp and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute are invaluable components of this team.

They need to make a statement that 33-3 and back-to-back Final Fours is not the result of luck, fortune, or a few questionable calls.

They need to make a statement that will make all of the talking head analysts STFU and appreciate what Ben Howland has done since coming to UCLA.

Most importantly, they need to make a statement that Bruins believe in "WE" and send the Hilltoppers back to the comfort of their homes to enjoy the rest of the tournament.

So here is some "statement" MOJO to help carry us through tonight's match up:

Game on.

This is your official open-game thread.

Go Bruins!

Absolutely psyched up!
If you win the award for 'non-productivity' then I must be the runner-up. I spent the entire day at work checking every possible sport websites and had butterfly in my stomach all day. God it's going to be a beautiful tonight.

A contested title, I would argue
To be fair, today is my light day, but I did spend nearly all of my afternoon seminar checking all sorts of sites looking up stuff for the game.

I was able to drag my mind away for an hour to hit up the law school's admitted student BBQ - one of the few events here where beer other than Bud or Natural Lite (Natty) is served.

@Laser Guided: It was Kevin Love's idea. He wanted to advertise the minimum cup size for any co-ed hoping to get with him.

Been thinking about this game, and nothing but this game, for the past four days.  And I completely agree with the theme of Ajax's post: it's time to drop the hammer on someone.

Enough with the close calls and second-half comebacks.  Those are great, but it's time to put the full power of the Bruin war machine on display.

Time to serve the beatdown.  Go Brus.

Johnson: Well, my Final Four's still alive. I picked Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA and Stanford, so I still have a legitimate shot. I feel like North Carolina's gonna play UCLA in the final, and that UCLA's going to win it.
And on that note I am out of here.

OT: Recap of Jrue's McD performance
This is probably quite old news for most of you, but thought it was worth posting.

From USAtoday.com:
""Jrue Holiday, UCLA: 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting, 0-for-2 from three-point range, 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, five rebounds, five steals, three assists, two turnovers in 22:10 minutes of play.

Holiday played solid basketball - like he usually does. He was disruptive on the defensive end while playing an efficient game on offense. ""

Gotta love the shooting pct, the FIVE steals, FIVE  rebounds, THREE assists, etc....

Never really liked him.   Seems like he ran a sketch program at Cincy.   I will never forget 2002 (I think it was 2002) when Huggy's Cincy was a 1 seed and Steve Lavin as an 8/9 seed beat him.  The game was in Pittsburgh.  You know who played before our game?  Ben Howland's Pitt vs Ben Braun's Cal.

Xavier is in Cincy, right?  I am sure there is some sort of animosity between them and Huggy Bear.

And now he turns on his player.

You're right, CBH would NEVER do that.  He always has their backs, and they know that, and that's why they play their hearts out for him.

We should be up 25
Still too many tentative players on offense. When they are tentative, they miss.

You're not kidding
If any of their 3 point shooters get hot in the 2nd half, we'll be having a heart attack game again!!

what do you think CBH does against the press
2nd half adjustment will shred the press.  Hopefully wku will keep it on.

They only press after a score
the best way to beat it is to stop them from scoring.

They need to pass on fast breaks not go in 1 on 1
It results in a turnover or a bad shot each time.

This way defense wins games
both teams aren't playing that well offensively (obviously especially WKU), but defense keeps you in the game.

It's time to dial it up a notch.
Taking them out of their 3-point game, now we need to move into the paint and score score score.

I'm sure Howland will talk to Luc at the half
Luc won't make those uncharacteristic turnovers in the second half.
