Sweet Sixteen Win over Western Kentucky

Update [2008-3-28 18:8:42 by Telemachus]:
Well, as a "Topper" to complete this post, now that we can concentrate on our next opponent, enjoy this tidbit as recommended by Meriones and courtesy of lolwtferic.

No offense at all to a great Western Kentucky team. Just having a little fun to take the edge off our tense win.

What can you say about James Keefe? He stepped up last night, grabbing a double-double and Player of the Game honors for UCLA. Watch his tough rebounding, blocks, key baskets and overall hustle, which helped the Bruins overcome a furious comeback by the Hilltoppers:

Josh Shipp breaking out in double-figure scoring, including 2 of 3 from 3-point distance, was a welcome sight indeed.

Shipp's second three with under five minutes in the game as the shot clock expired was key to extending the Bruins' lead and momentum.

Kevin Love, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, continued his consistent play and to show maturity beyond his years as he collected another double-double to lead the Bruins with 29 points.

Star-divide

Russell Westbrook, Alfred Aboya, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, and a frustrated, foul-plagued Darren Collison also contributed to the scoring and the team win.

Post-game news coverage and interviews follow:

Collison's fouls, you be the judge:

Hey T
In your preparation of these clips, did you formulate a take on the validity of the fouls called on DC, RW, and JS?

I know there were at least a couple of legit calls, but it was very strange that all 3 accumulated so many fouls so quicklly, especially since WKU was aggressively picking up at half court/ pressing UCLA.

In my opinion
The first 2 fouls called against DC were the most legit.

Fouls 3, 4, and especially, 5 were ticky-tack nonsense.  I'm not entirely sure there was even contact on the 5th and the ref who called it was behind the shooter.

I could be wrong.

The last one was total BS
He called it before Collison got close to touching the shooter.  If you watch, he was already moving before the supposed foul.

Calls on UCLA during the game
Wonder if the calls against UCLA last night, many of which were questionable, had anything to do with the  whinning going on after the A&M game.....

good chance
But who knows?

I generally think fans of a given team tend to overstate the badness of an officiating job and us here at BN are no exception. But man... I watched that last DC foul 5 or 6 times on TiVO... I just didn't see contact. I didn't see it. It was total horse shit.

I hate the foul out rules (Dick Vitale offers an interesting alternative where, starting from a guy's 7th foul, the team gets 2 shots + possession, like a technical). But even worse than just the existence of them is refs using phantom garbage to foul out a team's top player with 5+ minutes left in the NCAA Tournament. If it was a WKU player I would've been just as pissed.

DC's Fouls
I saw it a little differently though hard to tell from the quick replays - the 1st and 4th fouls to me looked legit - like hacks.  The other three I felt were bad calls - the last one the worst.  That said, it's possible there were other fouls on DC that weren't called - hard to remember and I haven't replayed the game to check.

I do think the last couple games have been more tightly officiated than our regular season pac 10 games and that's a bit of a worry.  It always used to seem like they let stuff go more in the tourney (vs the Pac 10 season before Howland arrived and altered the style of the league), but now it seems like the opposite.  Maybe this is how Big East teams used to feel coming into the tourney, who knows.

Sounds like the ref we had last night is perpetually whistle happy.  I don't think we change our game, but it's something we need to be aware of as a team and avoid the silly fouls we sometimes pick up.  I think our chances of winning from here on out with DC or another one of our key players out for the last 5 min (even though, as noted, we seem to always have guys step up which is awesome) are greatly diminished.  Got to play smart!  Love this team and they will adjust and find a way to win.  What a great season.

Go Bruins.

who were the refs?
I know that clown that booted Trent Johnson is in Phoenix... was he reffing the game? ESPN's box score isn't listing the names.

p.s.
according to one site he did indeed referee that game... maybe that explains something. I sincerely hope he is not reffing Saturday's game.

Yes
I was able to see your links and images before. Right now all I can see are blue bars?

by bluestreet on Mar 28, 2008 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

That's a new one
Try downloading one of the clips and playing with the Quicktime player to see if the problem is with your browser. Are you using IE or Firefox? Try downloading this one, it's short. A "Save Movie" option should appear when you mouse over the image.

I can go to the gallery
but cannot see any images or links in your actual post?

by bluestreet on Mar 28, 2008 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Ok, I'm trying to imagine what you're seeing
So, in my post, you see a blue bar and then the text, "What can you say about James Keefe . . ." followed by another blue bar, and then the text, "Josh Shipp breaking out . . ." as so on?

Right click in the first bar and select "View Image" or "Show Image". What do you see?

Again, what browser are you using? Internet Explorer or Firefox. Are you on Windows or Mac?

Using firefox on window
Basically I see your text and then a tiny blue bar (where I think your image is supposed to show up). But if I browse over the blue bar and click on it takes me to your video gallery and that page loads fine and the videos work all right. The blue bar thing is kind of weird because I have been able to see your images without any problem in the past.

Very strange . . .
I'll continue doing research and get back to you.

Same here
Just see blue boxes with the red X.

The links to the clips work though.

What a game!
Brazelton was a beast! I couldn't believe how fast our 21 point lead evaporated. But KLove and Jkeefe were monsters in their own right. I don't think any of our games are going to be easy from here on out.

Thanks for all the video feeds Tele...
I always look forward to seeing your magnificent work the day after every game.  I too was having issues seeing the pictures, using IE, but now the pictures and captions show up just fine.
