Reasonable Expectations: A Simple Touchstone
Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N
From the Man Who Knows Best -- John Wooden.
Since I joined BruinsNation, two years ago, the issue of whether our expectations, as Bruins, were "reasonable" has been the topic of many discussions and well written posts.
During the lizard years, and the football season, the claim was that we were unreasonable -- that our expectations were out of control, and that we should recognize and accept mediocrity.
Mediocre coaches and their supporters tried to paint us as unreasonable fans.
Now, the "expectations" debate has taken a screwy turn.
We are using the "unreasonable expectations" brush to paint some MSM reporters who are claiming that if we do not hang banner 12 our season will have been a failure.
Eloquently, many BN members have written that our season has been a complete success -- a delight, a wonderful journey -- not matter how it ends.
Is it odd that we are the ones playing the "unreasonable expectations card"?
No, it's not.
Although some may be to simple to see it, our position is both factually and intellectually consistent -- where the reporters and whiner's is not.
The key to the debate is how one defines "success".
Our touchstone has been provided with the one man best qualified to define the term -- Coach.
Here's his definition:
"Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming." During the lizard and KD years, we challenged whether our coaches were leading our players to "become the best" they "were capable of being". We felt they were not, and I do not think many can factually challenge that assertion. Our expectation of "more" was reasonable. This year, we are saying that, however this season ends, we will be at peace because we know that CBH and our incredible players have always done their best to be their best.
This very young team, this team with significant injuries, this team playing other great teams, has always left it all on the floor.
If we win. Great. If we don't, we know that it will not be for lack of effort. And, what more can we ask?
When I was teaching, I was frustrated because I wanted to grade on "effort" not "achievement". It troubled me when gifted students did not try to be the best they could be. In the legal education world, grades are simply a way to spread out people so that the "elite" law firms don't have to work hard in the interview process to find the best candidates. I resented being a part of that process.
When I grade our BB program and our FB program under the lizard and KD, I see programs that underachieved. We expected more effort from those programs and their coaches and did not get it. Under Coach's standard, we were correct when we said those programs were not successful. Our expectations of "more" were reasonable.
When we grade our BB program under CBH, we see the type of effort from a coaching staff that comes into the games well prepared, makes incredible adjustments, and finds ways to win games. When things go against us we don't whine. We just play harder. Under Coach's standard, this season has been a success. No matter how it ends, with or without a banner, it will have been a success. Those who will only be satisfied with a banner are being unreasonable.
We own the "expectations" moral high ground because we have been applying a legitimate standard in a consistent manner.
Those who both supported the lizard and KD and now are questioning whether this season will be a success, have been intellectually dishonest.
Brothers and Sisters, you have done a great job challenging them.
Now, it's time to brush them aside, like a few ants on the table cloth. It's time to enjoy the feast.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Achievements
Very well written. Another aspect which I really enjoy with Coach Howland, and which I hope (and expect) to enjoy with Coach Neuheisel, is that the players progress under the coach's tutelage. There is no doubt that KL was a serious talent when he arrived on campus, but there is also no doubt that he is a much better player now than when he arrived. This is due to his work ethic and his intelligent approach to the game, but it is also due to Coach Howland's teachings. As Exhibit B, we need look no further to the improvement in Russell Westbrook's game from last year.
It was so frustrating in both football and basketball in recent years to hear about touted recruits, who then left campus at the end of their careers with a lack of progress and dashed expectations.
Those days are over.
Go Bruins.

You Make an Important Point
We measure that in "growth". Players should get better each year, show more skills and more knowledge -- and with that success should maintain high standards of character.
Our players do all of the above.
One thing that shines is their ability to handle an interview, speak publicly, and represent the team and University. I have been amazed at how good our guys are at doing that -- especially the young big guy.
We don't all come to college mature. Many kids do not hold up under that scrutiny, pressure or handle the attention that well.
We have a successful program, no matter the outcome of the next two games because it shows individual and team growth.

The Prof and the TAs
As a parent, I have tried always to remember that kids learn primarily from example. I share your pride, 66, in watching our players play and listening to them speak. It is clear that they are bright young men with character. And, it is clear that they have had very good teachers.

penetrating insight here 66
In some ways the tournament is like the world series of poker. The best players will rise to the top. It is rarely only the best players who make it to the final table (this is one of the years where all the heavyweights are there, but it doesn't always work that way due to a variety of factors). And even then anything can happen. A good coach like CBH is going to do everything he can to put us in a position to win. Hopefully we will. But if we don't it doesn't mean he is incompetent. Frankly this final four is really loaded and although I think we can do it and as Meriones says I BELIEVE we can do it, this standard from 66 is absolutely the best way to judge our success, and bottom line is that this season is a success

Nicely
Of course, you are absolutely right about the expectations dichotomy. It really struck me the other day when a friend emailed me with an invite to a Final Four watching party. The email said something to the effect of "and we'll accept nothing less than a championship!"
I think my friend was just trying to be rah-rah, but I had a deeply negative reaction to the email. I honestly feel like this team has performed superbly, and while I hope for banner 12, I'd be completely satisfied if our season ended this Saturday.
Does this mean that my expectations are skewed, or that I was unfairly holding the football team to a higher standard in months past? Of course not. This team is obviously on the right track, and deserves both our support and has earned our appreciation. This season is an unbridled success, and nothing can change that now.

It Came Together for Me Last Night
Yet, that peace was being threatened by those who were demanding a banner as a sign of its success.
I felt challenged. That, somehow, I was a lesser fan, for not demanding the banner.
I was thinking about Coach, and how he never told a team to go out and "win", when it all pulled together for me.
The real key is in the way we define success -- and Coach's definition is the one that I try to use in all of my life.
I think many of us are saying the same thing. We are in a wonderful place. I think that's what BW meant when he said that "order has been restored to the universe."
Go Bruins.
