WWL Sits Down With "the Caretaker" of Westwood

Here is the perfect followup to jjreicher's post on Coach Wooden.

WWL had a little "Final Four Sit Down" w the Caretaker of Westwood:

Pretty solid interview. Although the awkward audio issue around 3:59 mark is pretty hilarious.

Anyway Coach Howland touched on a number of issues heading into San Antonio this weekend. He makes it very clear toward the end: we are going to be the "underdogs" on Saturday. But you can bet our boys will be prepared and ready to go.

GO BRUINS.

Hmm
I am not sure I agree that we are underdogs, and I am not sure how I feel about Howland saying so.  On one hand, he is the type of coach that is always very respectful of the other team, which is great because he brings his A effort.  But on the other hand, our players are very talented and have played very hard, and I feel like we aren't underdogs to any (college) basketball team.

This is just semantics, I know Howland refuses to let our players believe they can lose.

He's just being polite
It's a certain Memphis coach who's going to have to learn a lesson in humility.

audio issue around 3:59 mark
that was pretty hilarious.  Can this guy improvise or what?  Irrespective of any supposed talent gap on either side, I like our chances with Coach Howland leading  the charge.

Check out the Jay Bilas and Ben Howland interviews
Jay Bilas and Jim Rome "honking" Ben Howland big time.  If you have a membership to The Jungle, it's a great listen.

Perfect...
Way to play it.

Howland did the right thing and didn't give Calipari any ammo for his underachieving team. Calipari has made a lot of hay from what he perceives from the media as being disrespect for his team. He'll put anything on the bulletin board to motive these guys.

But...

Here is where their passion bucket is to run out. I think that Memphis will return to their old ways this game. Mark my words.

absolutely is
the right thing to do to give memphis props

why not?  they have dominated in the tournament against good teams, it's not like our guys won't come out and be prepared to play

i am just amazed though at the difference in hearing CBH in interviews after the game relative to others.  Calipari just kept repeating, "its our guys time" where Howland is always giving props to the other team, his players effort, etc.  Seems to have a very different culture...

I can just
imagine Coach Cal printing fake quotes out and creating bulletin board material.  I can see him handing out a quote from "The Bruin Times" where Howland is quoted as saying "Memphis has gotta be the weakest one seed the tourney has seen in years" lol..
O.A.

Nice backdrop.
I thought it was cool that when CBH is on the split screen in the intro that you could see a few of the NCAA trophies behind him.  Nice touch, I thought.

But then when they go to the full screen of him - holy cow!!  That's gotta get an opponent's attention just a little!
