Center Court: Ben Ball (Stanford) Open Thread

Don't need to write all that much for tonight's game thread. Everyone knows what's at stake at Pauley.

It's Go Time.

There shouldn't be any surprises tonight against a very good team. Once again we need our warriors to stay focus and listen carefully to their coach:

We need our guys to stay calm and poised and come out with the same ferocity that came out with against Washington State and Arizona. If you want to read up more on this game go here and here.

The tip off is set for 8:00 pm PST (FSN). If you are not getting the game on television you can follow it via links provided at the official site.

As always, if you are watching, listening, following, or tracking the game online, post your comments here.

This is our Ben Ball Warrior open thread.

Fire Away.

GO BRUINS.

PUMPED UP
No pre-game show on TV, so I spent the last hour re-watching The UCLA Dynasty special from HBO last season.

SO pumped.

No Bruin Broadcasters?
So for the most important game of the season we don't get either set of standard Bruin announcers?

dude, don't complaint
UCLA and the Pac 10 are so incompetent that THIS GAME IS NOT BEING BROADCAST IN SAN DIEGO.  Think about that.

All we get down here in San Diego is God-awful Trojan basketball, if we even get that.

Game is on in Tampa
and with no broadcasters.

Turn the sound off.  You never ever have to worry about standard broadcasters or, as is is apparently the case here, substandard broadcasters.

I just saw each team make a basked.  And to my surprise and wonder, the score is actually posted on the TV screen.  Hence, I don't need to hear the broadcasters state the obvious, mis-state the obvious, or anything else that they do so well.

UCLA Telecast
How does Hansen keep his job as Pac-10 commissioner?  Here are the 3 and 7 teams in the country, and we get this announcing crew, for a game which is not even being televised apparently in San Diego.  Ouch.

by Dexter Fishmore on Mar 6, 2008 8:43 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The offense is really struggling

is a joke, honestly.  When the shots aren't falling is when you have to execute, and instead we're throwing it to the wrong guys, forcing shots, etc.  Very very ugly.

Calm down 78
Yes we had a terrible first half. Our guards need to calm down a bit and take control of the offense. We need to keep those guys from getting second chance pts and hit our FTs.

But don't shit over our team based on one bad half. Otherwise get the fuck off our bandwagon.

Perimeter Offense
Right now, we have none.  3 points from the perimeter in the first half - that's it.  If we're not scoring from outside, we need to be essentially perfect in the other phases of the game.  Obviously, that's far from the case.

I'm not meaning to pile on Josh - I know he has been doing a lot of good things for the team - but the disappearance of his outside game has become a big problem for this team.

the team that regardless:
has won 10 of its last 11 games

has overcome double-digit deficits more times than I care to count

has a coach that time and time again has proven that he can make the adjustments that win games - and can shove a boot a good foot-to 18 inches up a struggling player's A@*

by bruinhoo on Mar 6, 2008 9:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

UNACCEPTABLE.
Yep.  I have faith, but this was COMPLETELY FUCKING UNACCEPTABLE.

Observations:

(1)  Defensive adjustment:  Our doubling with bigs down low was NOT working... until CBH made the right adjustment and DELAYED the double until the post-man started the dribble.  What started out as shades of Florida debacles past turned into sound adjustments.  Props to the staff.

(2)  Turnovers:  We had at least TWO turnovers caused by the simple failure to CACTH THE DAMN BALL.  Two more because our guys didn't look to see a defender standing less than 2 feet in front of them.  UNACCEPTABLE.

(3)  Lousy free throw shooting:  Anybody remember when AA got his rhythm back in the Tourney last year by driving to the line and MAKING his throws?  Paging Josh...  SHOW UP.

(4)  Josh:  I know, I know, he has done the little things in games where his shot isn't falling.  He is NOT DOING THEM TONIGHT.  No boxing out, losing his guys off screens.  UNACCEPTABLE.

(5)  TRYING TOO HARD:  Kevin going behind the back in halfcourt, 18 feet from the hoop?!?  Darren trying to triple team Brook Lopez while his man breaks free for a layup off a give and go?!?  Russell leaping to strip B. Lopez on an inbounds leaving his guy to drain a three?!?  Darren going AWAY from screens set by Kevin and Lorenzo?!?

UNACCEPTABLE.

Yeah, I'm pissed.  I'm pissed off by unfocused, foolish play that goes against everything we're accustomed to seeing from this team.  Kevin, Luc, and Lorenzo are BATTLING -- and a Karl Dorrell FOOTBALL team has scored more in a half this year than this.

And Brook Lopez doesn't even have a foul yet?!?!?

GET IT TOGETHER, BRUINS.

We can usually
compensate for poor shooting with superior rebounding, yet we are being out-rebounded 19-14. This is where the adjustments need to come. Howland can't do anything about the shooting, but we must hit the boards better. If we can do this, we can pull this out.

There are 20 minutes in a half of college basketball.

NO, IT'S NOT!!!!
We need to BEAT CAL, and win two games in the P10 tourney.

If Stanford wins the PAc-10 tourney, and we flop, they'll be No. 1 seed out west.

DON'T LET UP!!!!

Absolutely Not Sealed
Remember last year?  Lock up the conference on Thursday night, lose on Saturday, lose in the first round of the conference tournament... #2 seed.

by Dexter Fishmore on Mar 6, 2008 10:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

agree
As was noted during the 1st half when people were looking for a train to jump under, we will most likely play these guys again next weekend at Staples.  That game could be relevant for ultimate seeding.

Personally, there does not seem to be all that much difference between a 1 and 2.  UCLA did just fine last year as a 2.  The big thing is to stay in the West and in Anaheim.  Hopefully, they accomplished that tonight.

crap all game just to hear them whine at the end.

That was a tough game
I could barely stand to watch it.  I figured if I chimed in here with anything I was sure to upset any hint of any karma or mojo that might have existed.

And I didn't hear the announcers, which was great.  I'm sure they were rooting for the furds, because no one likes to see the favorite knock out the challenger.

Just watched highlights
think bruins caught a break with Hill's foul on Collison at end of regulation. That looked pretty clean.

by Bruins095 on Mar 6, 2008 10:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

It was 100% clean
we got lucky with the call.  However, the shot prior to that when Hill made that runner, that was a charge.  Tit for Tat.  Furd can complain all they want about that call but we would have had a legitimate gripe for the refs not calling a charge on Hill when Love was there waiting.

Pac 10 refs are horrible but at least they are consistently horrible.  Sounds so stupid though.

by BlueReign on Mar 6, 2008 10:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

nope
the block itself was clean, but DC got hit on the right arm (Defender's left hand) before the block. The talking heads conveniently missed that part during their 15-minute whinefest.

by bruinhoo on Mar 6, 2008 10:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Clean or Not
Justice prevailed.  That was a close call, although it looked like DC got hit on the elbow on the way up.  Meanwhile, there were so many no calls and bad calls (double dribble, etc) that to focus on one play and say that either team got jobbed is a lack of perspective.  The better team took the other team's best shot (the deserved number 7 team in the country) and gutted out the win.

by islandbruin on Mar 6, 2008 10:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You can't be serious
put yourself in Furd's shoes.  If we had that type of foul against us, you would really sit there and say, our guy hit his elbow first?  I'm a diehard fan but not blind.  That was not a foul period.  It's just a shame the refs are so retarded.  The wolves are already out describing how Stanford got jobbed and we got Duke-like tx.  From Dookies too.  How ironic is that.

by BlueReign on Mar 6, 2008 10:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude
whatever you think of that call - maybe it was weak given the circumstances, but in the long run evens out for calls/noncalls that the trees got prior - those refs' got nothing on what the ACC refs give to Duke. Not! Even! Close!

I actually went to Duke's game last night in Charlottesville. If there had been room in the Virginia student section, I would have been on the ground rolling in laughter by the end of the first half at the calls that Duke gets (and on the road no less). Not even close.

Bruins - why won't you listen
TURN THE FREAKIN' VOLUME DOWN!  The announcers have yet to figure a way to have the score reversed in a game.  The announcers do not realize that this is a dead parrot.  It is not pinin'.  It is deceased.  It is an ex-parrot.  All their whining will do only one thing - it will cause whining in Palo Alto and anger in Westwood. And to what end?  The game is in the books.

I had problems with the game, but only because my stomach was churning.  I had no difficulty at all with the announcers.  I could see everything.  Yes, there was indeed a foul on the guy covering Westbrook.  That was fairly obvious from the TV shot live in fast motion, and probably not something they could see at all from their vantage point.  But controversy helps ratings, so they'll be controversial.  The intentional fouls on Collison in OT?  Without the interference and distraction from the announcers, it was obvously an intentional foul.

by Fox 71 on Mar 6, 2008 10:41 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to see it again
maybe he did get hit on elbow. Gutty win regardless.

Wow
What a great game. I agree with Coach Howland, this game reminded me of the OT thriller at Berkeley to clinch the Pac-10 championship. Afflalo in that game was comparable to DC today.

These announcers are embarrassing. What a joke.

Oh man, RW's free throws killed me at the end of regulation.

by Raisin on Mar 6, 2008 10:28 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I love Westy and all...
And yea, he's 70% free throw shooter. But for some reason, it always scares the hell out of me when he's the one who ends up taking the free throws. And yea, he makes 'em. But I'm not sure it'll ever change: give me Collison, Love, Shipp on the line, not Russell!

by jaffa on Mar 7, 2008 12:56 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I just looked at over and over.
Watch his hand..you can see that it hits the elbow and his hand kind of bumps on it and moves oddly.

Hit the elbow, it was clear.

Great game
Congrats to the Ben Ball Warriors!

Announcing sucked...

Officiating spotty, as usual...Pac10 needs to do something about it.  Nice no call on the Stanford double dribble...

by RandBruin on Mar 6, 2008 10:29 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Elbow?
Who cares about the elbow?  He hit the whole body.  He didn't have position, jumped up and forward, and hit him belly-to-belly.  It's a foul, no matter how much time is left on the clock.

thanks
I feel better. I'll take the win regardless, but would hate to see them win the conference on bad call.

he did NOT call the elbow..
i watched the referee as he made the call, and he was pointing to his body as he made the call.

what a finish.  and besides, the way things were going, who is to say that we wouldnt have hit a shot with 3 secs left anyways? :)

Yeah it was a foul.
There were many reasons it could of been called a foul.

I understand the frustration felt by Stanford, let us not forget the Texas call at the end of our game.

But the announcers are just whining now.

he called the body foul.  i honestly thought everything above the shoulders was pretty clean

by tp on Mar 6, 2008 10:36 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

All Heart
This team is all about heart.

As for the Foul, watch ESPN's Sportscenter highlights. They show you the reverse angle and Collison is definitely fouled ON the body going up (just like the ref indicated after making the call).

Regardless, Johnson and B. Lopez cleared the lane a couple of times with their pass + charge, but no calls were made. Where were the announcers then? Please.

Post Season Tune Up
That was a great game for both teams to get ready for the NCAA tourney.  Remember 95 with the Tyus full court dash against Missouri.  The Bruins (and Stanford) got an excellent session of pressure basketball tonight.  The Bruins responded big time- hopefully that will carry over in the coming weeks.
