Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

A special thanks to my extended Bruin Family

Bumped again. This story is more important than a few vids -Telemachus

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

A year ago at this time, I was in a pediatric intensive care unit where my four year-old son Tyler was on a ventilator after having his trachea crushed by a tumor that was rapidly growing in his chest cavity.  My family was suffering and we needed support wherever we could get it.  One of the places we found it was in the caring network of fellow Bruins here at Bruins Nation (and also from the moderators of Conquest Chronicles, proving that some things are bigger than rivalries.)

Tyler is now one year into a two year chemotherapy protocol.  It's been an emotional year, full of ups and downs.  During those lower times (mostly as a result of side effects from his chemo), it's been very helpful for me to have places like Bruins Nation, whether it was for support or, just as helpful, to simply have a distraction to take my mind away from the worries of the real world.

I'm happy to report that Tyler's last two PET scans have shown no evidence of any tumor and his oncologist has decreased his chemo and says that Tyler's response has been the best case scenario, and that he looks great.  I'll let you guys be the judge:

He is the mighty Bruin.  Triumphant evermore.

Thank you, Bruins Nation for everything.  I'm so lucky that Bruin Family really does mean family.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Warm thoughts going out to you and your son.
I have some small inkling of what you're going through.  My sister just finished her third round of chemo for ovarian cancer.  She has relapsed twice, but this time the numbers are looking good.  Good thoughts help make healthy bodies.

"Good thoughts help make healthy bodies"
I may not have believed that before, but I certainly do now.  Obviously, better drugs and treatment regimens are the major factor, but having that positive attitude and inner strength optimize the body's ability to maximize the effectiveness of those drugs.

Best wishes for your sister.  Let's hope the 3rd time is the charm.

Wonderful news
May Tyler's next picture be with Coach Howland.

He's like the little gnome in Amelie...
... and here he is at the Banner-Raising Ceremony at Pauley...

... and here he is at the College World Series...

... and here he is on the medal stand at the Women's Gymnastics Championships...

... and here he is helping Pete Carroll get up off the field after the 42-3 pounding at the Rose Bowl...

Tyler keeps asking me
if we can get tickets to "the final two" in San Antonio, but I think we're going to have to settle for Anaheim.

Is it bad...
that I'm already living vicariously through my kid?  How come the dance team members never ask me for a hug?!

AWESOME!
FREAKING AWESOME!!!

I will keep fingers crossed and include him in my daily rosaries just to make sure everything's OK.

I don't know your family personally, but to me, Tyler sure appears to be a good-looking, HEALTHY little kid.

May the great big Bruin in the sky bless all of you with good health, good news ... and really good futures.

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS, INSOMNIAC!

Wonderful!!!
This is wonderful news! I'm so glad he is doing well.

My wife is a two-time cancer curvivor (breast cancer & acute leukemia), so I know how great you must feel seeing your son doing so well.

He is a Mighty Bruin!

Much thanks
While it stinks that your wife had to go through the battle not once, but twice, it's always great to hear about other people who have beaten the big C.

Wonderful!
Tyler's looking great and showing the strength of a true Bruin!

(BTW, the PET scan was invented at UCLA by Pharmacology Chair Michael Phelps.)

Go Bruins!!!

I assume by "good people"
you're referring to my son.  I had my good person card revoked years ago.  :)

Great news man
Your son sounds like a Warrior already. Any 4-year old that goes through those types of tough times is special.

I think he can really benefit from more interaction with our dance team members though. ;'}

What a Great Bruin Warrior
I am spellbound by the sheer bravery and fortitude of this little boy.  I am a cancer survivor, and it is extremely difficult for me to even imagine what it must be like for a little kid to go through all of this.  God Bless you guys.

I too am spellbound by his bravery and fortitude
And yours as well.  One of the many (and better) memories from the past year that will last with me forever is walking with Tyler in the "survivor lap" during last summer's Relay for Life.  You couldn't help but draw strength and inspiration from the crowd of fellow survivors.  I was in awe.

Uplifting Story
He is the personification of the "gutty little Bruin."

My heart is with you
when I had cancer, I had to go through the pediatric oncology ward on my way to treatment. I thanked God, every day, that I had the cancer and not my child.

In many ways, it was clear the illness was harder on the parents than the kids. The kids would smile and goof around, but there was so much pain in the parents' eyes.

So, my heart is with you, as well as with Tyler.

It must be so hard to have a child fighting the battle.

Fortunately, it's a battle that is being won, more and more often.

Best to all of you.

And, thank you for this inspirational post and the stories. Things like this keep our heads in the right place.

I'm lucky
Tyler has enough joy in his heart to fill my own during the more difficult times.

So glad to hear that your treatment was a success.

Even the geezers are winning the battle!  :)

Can't Imagine...
Man, I get sick to my stomach when my son even gets a little ear infection or the flu, I cannot imagine what it would be like for him to have the dreaded C. You guys are definitley in our prayers here! Next time he's sick I'll just read this post for a reality check. God bless!
Go UCLA!

Today tell Tyler the Gold C on the jersey is
for him. He is a champion too!

The Gold C will make me think of all the Cancer survivors in the world and how much UCLA Medical Cancer has done for the advances in cancer research and care.

I went through surgery and 5 weeks of radiation in 1997 for a type of testicular cancer that they said wold have been a death sentence just 10 years earlier.

We are the Mighty Bruins and our victories are not just on the court and on the field!

A Bruin is Forever...
Many of us owe our futures to UCLA, but mostly because we got to enjoy some wonderful years in school and come away with that valuable degree. Your son will forever be tied to the Bruin family in a way few of us ever will. Every member of the Bruin family looks forward to the day he will join us in the exclusive club of Bruin Alumni.

Tyler
Our prayers go to your son for healing, and to your whole family for the energy to carry on.  My wife and I are both Bruins (Class of 1981) and Bruin band alumni, whose son (Greg) has been battling cancer for 4 years (Osteosarcoma).  Despite many surgeries, 2 rounds of chemo and an amputation of his right leg, we have been supported by love and prayer by 100's.  Many fellow Bruins donated blood for Greg while he was being treated at Children's Hospital LA.  Maybe Bruins Nation can commit to donating blood in Tyler's name for use by other pediatric patients at either the UCLA Children's unit, or at Children's Hospital LA.

We rejoice in the health of your son and in his continued strengthening!
