So I got around to joining Bruins Nation...

and found someone had already taken my SBN username (seattlebruin) :(. When are you guys migrating to the SB2.0 format?

And so that my first diary isn't entirely devoid of worthwhile content, here's a little piece I wrote out of boredom one day.

"It's all just f-ing luck"

Early in the 05-06 season, Jordan Farmar badly sprains his right ankle. It kills his explosiveness and causes scouts to doubt if he has the athleticism to play in the NBA. Jordan is already planning to leave after three years. Because of this, he enters the draft as a sophomore to test the waters and prove his ankle is fine, and instead finds a first round guarantee. He is followed by fellow sophomore Arron Afflalo into the draft.

Arron decides to come back to school for his junior season, when he is a first team All-American. However, Arron has now burned his draft card, and thus cannot enter the draft and then pull out again. Arron isn't really projected as a first round selection, so it's very possible that he chooses to return for his senior season if the rules permitted it. On a side note, I think 4-AFFLALO would be on permanent display at the Morgan Center if this had happened as well.

Arron is forced to stay in the draft and becomes a first round selection of the Detroit Pistons (sometimes it all works out OK and I can't imagine a more deserving person than Arron). In 2008, the Bruins fall in the Final Four primarily because they lack an impact wing who can guard either Derrick Rose or Chris Douglas-Roberts and make a few jumpers, plus bring unparalleled intensity to the team. They would have had that player had Arron Afflalo come back for his senior year.

Is this to say that Arron for sure would have come back or that the only reason why he declared in the first place was to follow Jordan? No, of course not. We really don't what would have happened - hell, Arron could have come back and gotten three cheap fouls again and we still lose.

The point is that it's all just fucking luck. Skill and talent give you the opportunity to win a national title, but from that point on, it's basically just fucking luck. What if Brandon Rush doesn't hurt his ACL? What if Melo decides he doesn't need to go college (he didn't) and becomes a top 5 NBA draft pick in '02? What if Corey Brewer doesn't say "fuck it, I may be from a low-income family, but I'm going to put off a multi-million dollar contact for a year because I love Florida so much?"

It's just luck. A year ago I said that UCLA probably couldn't win under Ben Howland because the team is virtually upset-proof - e.g. I don't see us ever being upset because of the style and discipline that Ben demands from his players, but I don't see us "upsetting" (I'm using a very liberal definition of the word "upset" here - taking it to mean anytime you play a team with superior talent, not a favored or particularly better team) anyone because of that same style. After thinking a bit more, I came to the conclusion that it's the same as baseball - obviously you can't succeed without talent and skill (coaching), but in order to win the title it takes a perfect combination of circumstances - in effect, once you get close to it, it's sheerly a matter of luck as to whether you win it.

With Ben, I'm sure we'll be there again, and eventually, Lady Luck will shine on the Bruins and 12 will go up in the rafters of Pauley Pavilion.

Here's to hoping it reads UCLA 2009 MEN'S BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I don't know but
I'd say you ain't the only Emerald City Bruin by a LONG shot. My mom (CO'75) has huge ties to UW, so do at least a couple of the regs here on BN. Let's see CRN is an ex-Husky... then there's Lorenzo (albeit on thin ice)....not to mention all the would-be Husky-Bruins who end up stationed out in Pullman...

You gotta square that username shit away EARLY these days bro!

GO BRUIN BLUE.

I got it on the Mariner blog for SBN2.0 =(
Stupid people from Seattle who go to UCLA. I should have been more original and gone to like Anarctica State or something

*Antarctica
not the stupid way I spelled it.

Not bad
for your first post. Stick around and post some more.

We think we will change to the SBN 2.0 format sometime in the May. Obviously we will make sure folks get notice when we have a concrete time on when this change will take place.

Not sure what SBN 2.0 is,
but I just wanted to commend BN, as is, for one particular feature that I really like about this site--namely, the readily apparent (red-ily apparent?) [New] indicators. At a glance, I can see which posts are new, and which posts have how many new comments. I can quickly pick up where I left off in my reading, and can easily find new comments in old discussions.

This is a rare courtesy in the blogosphere. As a frequent browser of many blogs, from political to automotive to recreational, I don't know of any other site that does this "customer service" feature as well, if at all.

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this feature.

I don't think 2.0 would work well for BN
2.0 is great if it's just a blog where one person does the majority of the posting, but BN is truly a community. N does a great job with the front page, but the diaries are great too and I don't think 2.0 would work as well for a community like this.

Don't worry
we had the same concerns when Lookout Landing made the transition. Everyone hates it at first, but once you get used to it, the content is the same, the diaries work the same way, and the functionality/execution is a lot better. Plus the SBN Dev. Team is pretty good about sticking around to answer questions.

2.0
will be fantastic for BN. Not everyone is going to like it as first. And we expect that. There will always be people resistent to changes. But I am absolutely convinced that 2.0 will make this community even stronger.

Also to respond to Bruinut - you are not a "customer." Folks who post here are members of a community. All we ask from people is to play by the community rules (which includes not attacking long term members and moderators) and partake/contribute in all discussions related to UCLA athletics. But no one is paying us to do what we do here.

Anyway ... again 2.0 is coming sometime in May ... we can't wait. It will be a blast.

I know I'm not a customer
That's why I put "customer service" in quotes. I get the community thing, and I'm pretty sure that I have been acting in concert with that spirit.

I know you don't get paid for this. I was trying to compliment you on a nice feature of this site that I really appreciate.

Whether it's 2.0, 3.0, or 32.17, I hope this nice feature remains. Also, I would probably not be alone in appreciating someone's brief description of what "SBN 2.0" is all about.

A question about 2.0
Is it "Geezer-friendly"?  Remember that not all of us have live-in teenagers to handle the heavy lifting on computer things.

by Fox 71 on Apr 22, 2008 9:31 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Can you press the Z button over over?
Yup? Then it's "geezer friendly" enough for you =)

by seattlebruin07 on Apr 22, 2008 10:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Computer literacy
The phrase "Z button over over" is, in itself, not "Geezer friendly."  Does that mean hitting the "Z" key more than once?  And just the "Z" key, not control Z or alt Z or any of that?  And does "over over" mean hitting the Z key twice, not once?

Some of us had problems assembling the "easy to assemble" stuff we got our toddler kids for Christmas.  "Put Tab A into Slot B" wasn't always as easy as it sounded.  And none of this mysterious computer stuff is easy.

by Fox 71 on Apr 23, 2008 4:13 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Haha, yeah, I missed the word "and"
so it should read "over and over." So yes, you simply hit the z button repeatedly to scroll through and mark new comments.
