Cowan and Olson Injuries Confirmed

From the What's Bruin blog over at the LA Times:

Star-divide

Pat Cowan's MRI shows damage to his left ACL and his medial meniscus. He will be reexamined when the swelling decreases Ben Olson's X-rayshows a fracture in his right 5th metatarsal. It is possible that he may have a screw put in the bone. He will be sidelined 6-8 weeks. At least they have time to heal before practice starts again in July, but then Neuheisel had a conference call about the QB situation, and added there's a chance Cowan may not be back for the season, but we'll just have to wait until the swelling goes down.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

BO situation
Actually, for both BO and PC, get your degree, leverage your experience with the UCLA football program, and get a job. I would not be surprised to see BO (he is older) pass on more football and get on with his life...he is married now, I believe and with his injury history, I couldn't imagine him in another year of college football, let alone NFL competition....

Makes you wonder...
...how much good his Mormon mission did for him...any chance he regrets it?

by tasser10 on Apr 25, 2008 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt he regrets it
It's part of his religion.  It's fulfilling from a spiritual perspective to him, I'm sure.  Yes, it's fairly apparent it appeared to do harm to his football career, but given his faith, I'm sure that's a somewhat ancillary fact.

mission + QB = Bad.
I read something a while back about Norm Chow's opinion of QBs who go on LDS missions. He is against it. He thinks after 2 years of not touching a football its too difficult to get back into the physical and mental part in a short amount of time. Look at the stars he had at BYU and none of them went on missions. If I am a top prospect (please listen Kevin Prince) I would look at the success QBs who have done the misison thing against those who didn't and listen to Chow.

Just a guess
I'm not a member of the LDS church (and could go on and on about that, but not in this forum), but I suspect that if BO felt a real calling to do a mission, that calling superceded everything else in his life.

I once spoke with a missionary friend, and told him that I had a fear that I would get a "call" to go to some place I really didn't want to go.  He told me that if I really got something that I thought was a "call," I would want to go wherever it was that such a "call" took me more than anything else in the world.  Not having experienced anything like that, I can't describe it, but I sure had a better understanding about things like that after I talked with this guy.

That's what I mean
Was it a "call" for BO, or was it a guilt trip?  I don't know how deeply he believes in his faith, that's for him to know.  Anyway, it's too late now.  Good thing he'll get a UCLA degree!

i dont revel in any person's injury...
except for maybe oj simpson and derek jeter. with that said i am happy at the circumstances the injuries provide us. i really think craft and forcier are the 2 quarterbacks that will provide us the best chance to win this year. i think now they'll get the chance to prove their stuff.

Why Derek Jeter?
You must be a Red Sox fan.  What has Jeter done to deserve your ill wishes?  He's clean, he's a leader, he's a team player...well, maybe that's why: he's just too good for you.  Not that I'm a Yankees fan either.

Red Sox fans
are classless/insecure bunch.

rb
Just a suggestion. Don't insult Jeter again here. Thanks.

by Nestor on Apr 26, 2008 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jeter???
I'm OK with OJ, not because he's a former trojan, but he's a murderer.

Only a Red Sox fan would wish harm on Derek Jeter. Maybe your not a fan and he did something inappropriate to your sister???

This makes me want to cry
Why can't our football team get a break from all this terrible luck.  What have we done to offend the football gods.

not a red sox fan
im a dodgers fan. i dont like jeter because i prefer a-rod. and i dont liek the yankees, jeter is the symbol of the yankees, thus i dont like jeter. sorry that hurts your feelings, i suggest you get over it. i still think we'll be ok with craft and forcier though.

Plenty of room on the Rays Express
Don't look now, but the Rays are tied for first!  This is big news in Tampa.

Uhm
I suggest you think again if you want to post ad hominem attacks on Derek Jeter.

by Nestor on Apr 27, 2008 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

suggestion box is full
but please dirct me to the ad hominem attack i made against jeter. only responses to employ that rhetorical tool have been yours aimed at me. but i will assume it's in jest or at least not mean spirited.
and i still think we're fine with forcier and craft battling for starting qb.

Don't try to get too cute
You equated Jeter with a double murderer. If you insist on attacking Jeter that way - you will have to do it somewhere else. Consider it as your last warning. If you want to stick around just discussing UCLA football/hoops then you are more than welcome.

Seriously man
Take a chill pill. If you want to dislike someone, make it the MLB or Steinbrenner. The Yankees in baseball are the same as the Bruins in basketball. Your dislike of the Yankees is ultimately rooted in the fact that they win, and what irks you more is probably that they win (a lot) within the rules. UCLA does it with recruiting and coaching, the Yankees do it with their payroll. Get over it.

Shoot man, Jeter of all people. Nonsense.

Now back to our regularly scheduled Bruins sports.

It goes way, way back Tas
When I was in kindergarten, I was aware of the World Series, because I heard the Gilette Blue Blades song as I left home (and I never got to stay home and watch.)  It was always the Yankees and the Dodgers, and indeed, I assumed they were the only two teams who ever played.  Duke Snider had a men's store close to my home town, and naturally, I thought he was about the greatest thing ever to walk.  But the Yankees always won, and when you're 5, it's pretty devastating.  So I am happy to report that I despised the Yankees way before most of you guys were born.

Jeter is a horrible guy.  He's horrible because he plays for the Yankees.  And that goes for A Rod and all the rest.  Now, if it should happen that they would get traded somehow to the Rays, then they would be great guys.

But seriously, folks.  There are a lot of guys to despise on the Yankees, but Jeter has done nothing to merit that sort of sentiment (other than drive a spear through my heart on a fairly regular basis against the Rays.)

Don't I know it!
I lived in NY for 8 years!  Red Sox fans are by far the most obnoxious and rude fans.  Jonny Damon was a city hero, even had ice creams named after him.  Switches teams, becomes a pariah.  Some things should only go so far.  I have my own teams that I can't stand, but I don't think I've ever "hated" a player for no reason other than his jersey.

by tasser10 on Apr 29, 2008 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tough philosophical question
Who's more obnoxious - Baaaaaaaston fans or justsc fans?  Nah, that's not really a fair question.

I think one problem with people from New England is that they have become more openly obnoxious and abrasive because of the success of their pro teams in recent years.  And after so many years of having to endure that weather and those taxes and such awful teams, I guess I really can't blame them all that much.

But they still get under my skin a whole bunch.

last comment on this issue
nestor i didn't get why you were so bothered, but i suppose being put in company with oj sr. is bad news. it wasn't meant as an insult per se. it was a reflection of my personal opinion. just two athletes that i dislike for both similar and different reasons. i didn't say he was a bad guy.
i think my words were misconstrued and misinterpreted, and some comments carried some pretty rude insinuations. i don't think i wrote anything to be cute, except for the subject line, nor did i write anything that required me to "take a chill pill." i simply tried to clarify my comment, or at least strip it away from your interpretations.
to tasser specifically, if you can't understand how a player can be hated for the jersey he wears, then we're just on different wavelengths. i don't root for ucla teams because they're good nor do i hate the yankees for the same reason. ucla is my alma mater and the la dodgers are my hometown team. they're my teams, i love them when they stink, i love them when they're good, because i love them. conversely, i hate their rivals for the same irrational reason that i love my teams, doesn't that make sense? the dodgers' true nemesis is the yankees(the giants don't really count cuz they stink so it's not even fair) so i don't like them. i grew up in the 80's and the yankees stunk in the 80's and i still didn't like them. and i hated mattingly because he was the symbol of the yankees, like jeter now. for the record, i hate the red sox too. mainly because hey were the most staunch opponent to integration and were the last team in mlb to have a player of color on their roster-they may be the most racist team in sports still. and why should i hate mlb or steinbrenner? i actually like steinbrenner for what it's worth. now as far as the pinstripes winning by the rules, pettite's and clemens' buttcheeks may indicate otherwise.
all's i wanna talk about is bruins bball/fball, if you look at my last lines on my posts i tried to bring it back to topic. i'm done responding on this line for sure. but if after all, you still feel offended enough to ban me, get your gestapo on.
