UCLA v. Memphis: 2008 National Semi-Final Open Game Thread

It's finally go time. This week didn't drag on, did it?

Last time the Bruins met the Tigers in the Tournament, the nation (small "n") stood witness to the beauty of Coach Howland's in-your-shirt defense and how it completely shut down the more athletic Memphis squad. After the game, we had to hear the pundits, some of which still won't go away, about how "ugly" the Ben Ball Warriors made that game.

To the Nation it was a thing of beauty, and you certainly cannot argue with the result:

Bruins embracing the ugliness

Here is to more "ugliness" and more of the same results.

Let's stick with the same MOJO combination from our last game:

It's great to be a Bruin right about now.

This is your official National Semi-Final open-game thread. Have at it.

Go Bruins!

Time to turn down the CBS clowns ...
... and blast Chris Roberts and Don MacLean.

(Fox71, I know you already have the TV sound off)

Listening to Bruin radio is part of my ritual.  Anybody else agree Donny-Mac was not only an exceptional scorer but is also an outstanding analyst?

It's a pleasure to be sharing this day with the rest of BN, though I'm so amped up I can barely type straight (maybe that's due to the beer part of the ritual).  Go Bruins!

YOU KNOW OUR NAME.
YOU KNOW OUR NAME.

I'm a longtime Bond fan, and to get geared up (not like I need any help), I like watching and listening to the opening credits from the last Bond movie.

"...If you come inside, things will not be the same
When you return to the night

If you think you've won
You never saw me change
The game that we have been playing

I've seen diamonds cut through harder men
Than you yourself but if you must pretend
You may meet your end...

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you

You can't deny the prize; it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die

The coldest blood runs through my veins<
You know my name.
YOU KNOW MY NAME...
"

The mission is what matters, and the mission is this: "...do our best to become the best that we are capable of becoming."

And the best we are capable of THIS YEAR... is BANNER 12.

We must be smart. Swift. TOUGH.

And that is what we are.

IN CASE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY HAS FORGOTTEN, we haven't.

I just finished praying on a blue rosary.  I've got my AA jersey on.  My kid has his Farmar jersey on.  Ms. M is stuck in Sacramento of all places on a school competition (she's a teacher), but she's calling in regularly.

WE ARE THE UCLA BRUINS.

YOU KNOW OUR NAME.

3 EARLY KEYS
  1.  Catch the ball better in the paint.  No bobbling.
  2.  Play off the Memphis drivers -- let them try threes.  Cover back.
  3.  Hit the OFFENSIVE glass.  Shoot close, miss close, we get putbacks.

Mem is taking long shots...
... but since they're keeping their guards back to shut off the break, they're getting long boards.

I liked our earlier frontcourt of KL, LMRAM and JK.  If we can go long stretches with that frontcourt, or AA2 in there, too, we can lock down the D glass AND keep our guards tracking long rebounds.

Get the ball to Love.  Draw the third foul on Dorsey.

Hope and pray CDR does something stupid that leads to his second.

And, if we're dreaming, Rose gets arrested for sleeping with a minor.  That'd work out real well.

Memphis is all one-on-one
UCLA has a much better system.  If we can step up our defense, we should pull this through.  Remember, we are a second half team and Coach Howland is hundred times the coach that Calipari is.  Calipari just buys talented players and then does nothing.  We may not have as much talent, but we play a better system and we have a better coach.

Let's get this done, Bruins!

Feeling pretty good overall
Offensively, we are getting it done for the most part.  Lots of guys are involved, and besides some mental mistakes, etc., I like it

Defensively, we've got to refocus on the boards, defensive particularly.  They've made some impressive moves around the basket, and were shooting out the daylights early.  If not for a period of more reasonable shooting, this could have gotten ugly.

Other than that, I agree with many that we've got to be careful about the pace, but think we did okay besides a few spots.

Also, the ref'ing has been just fine in my book.  It's never perfect, but they've basically let us play without the touch fouls that I'd feared.

All in all, we closed out the half well, and I feel good about the second half.

Now let's GO.

GO BRUINS.

WE ARE VERY MUCH IN THIS.
KL has been quiet -- only 8-10 points -- but you KNOW that ain't gonna last.

JS is hitting from distance, and he's LOOKING to drive.

DC is getting more comfortable with MEM's defense, and he only has ONE FOUL.

RW is, what, 5 for 7?  AND WITH ONLY ONE FOUL.

Luc is hitting the glass and looks to be giving up the baseliners (ugh).

Only 6 turnovers for us agaisnt a frenetic athletic team.

Despite all the talk of pace, this has NOT been a runaway by Memphis -- and when's the last time these guys had to play a close battle against a team that knew how to play solid D.

CDR will cool off.  CBH will get these guys re-set on D, and LMRAM will start forcing him out.  Wtach for it.

We don't have them EXACTLY where we want them, but we have them right where they don't want to be.

WE'RE GONNA TAKE THEM.

I agree, M
We have not played particularly well, but we're down only by three.  If we had scored on just about any of our turnovers, we would be in business.  And there is the luck factor.  We are getting zero luck.  They shoot the all-time brick from three point land, it hits the backboard and rolls to the half-court line where they pick it up.  When will that ever happen again?

If we just calm down a bit, and get half of the lucky breaks they're getting, I am optimistic.

by Fox 71 on Apr 5, 2008 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

People usually scoff at "luck" but
I totally agree. A brick 3 pt. attempt that comes out to half court for a rebound? Collison steals and foot touches out of bounds? A pass off of westbrooks toe out of bounds (Ok, not actually luck, just a fluke). I agree

What I want to see in the 2nd Half
  •  Darren Collison start playing like they could actually lose the game.
  •  RW play a little better D (I know, that's like asking for something to be more than perfect, but you know...)
  •  KL to get ANGRY.  He could use a wake up call too.  I know his first half wasn't that bad, but if he wants to he can take over the game, we've seen it before.

They are going after the ball more agressively.
UCLA looked a bit lazy with hustle. They need to match their focus and energy and go after every ball like their lives depend on it, otherwise they are gonna keep getting second chances all night and you can't win a game giving them two chances per possession. On offense, go inside, get them into foul trouble. Do not hoist us silly jmpshots that feed their fast break.

Just go inside do not pass around the perimeter. Ball on the perimeter with shot clock running down is recipe for last second jumpshots and turnovers.

OK, here's the plan...
...(1)  get RW in at the point NOW.

(2)  JS ahs to shot on the drive.  he can't wait for wide-open shots -- there won't be any.  He HAS to look to SHOOT.  EVen if he misses, we can get baOAds for putbacks and maybe draw fouls.

(3)  KL.  Feed it to him.  Lob, backscreen, give it to him for isos.  GIVE HIM THE BALL!!!!!

Hell, I'd stay and get a degree, UCLA is a fantastic place to go to school and be an athlete.  The NBA will ALWAYS be there.

Frankly his game could stand another year of tuning as well.

Put it this way...if you knew you'd be the Big Man inside each and every game, playing massive minutes for a premier basketball program with a wonderful history, OR would you rather ride the pine in the NBA getting maybe 5 minutes a game for a BAD team with no hope of making the playoffs.

NONE of the Bruins had the passion tonight.  THis wasn't the same team.

Bullshit attack?
All I said was I wouldn't mind if he went to the NBA and didn't come back - WHICH it looks like he probably will.  Jeeze Louise - so is this a site where we can post NOTHING but positives and NEVER criticize our players or coaches?

Oh wait, isn't this the site that called for a certain Football coach to get FIRED?  So if I can't criticize a player or coach for a bad game once in awhile, does that mean I have to post nothing but platitudes and bon mots?  Give me a break - look up the term "hypocrite" Nestor, you might see yourself there.

Oh and don't worry, I won't be posting criticisms of anyone here anymore, I probably won't be posting here much, this doesn't seem to be a very friendly "blog"/"message board."

Mata-Real is still a champion.
I'm very sad we couldn't give LMR a title as a going away present.  He's been a great warrior for us, and he, with Josh, Arron, and Jordan are the foundation of what has been rebuilt into the nation's greatest basketball program.

Great season.  I can't say I'm not extremely disappointed in how our guys played today, but Memphis earned it.  They hit their FTs and they played a great second half.

We had them within 3 and with their big guys in foul trouble.  We threw it away.  I know this really burns.  I know our guys our in a lot of pain.

I hope they remember that pain and disappointment next year and use it to bring the national title back to where it belongs.

UCLA has 11 scholarship players
After Mata graduates, thats 10 left.  The team is allowed 13.  With 4 coming in, even if KL leaves, UCLA will be at the max.  If RW leaves, there would be one available for a big man.  I think there are a couple of big men who are looking to see what happens.

Thanks Guys
Great season, such a pity it had to end tonight.

DC, don't be too hard on yourself (and come back next year!).

Kevin and RW, do whatever you think is right of course, but the phrase "unfinished business" springs to mind...

LoMata, thank you most of all. You've been a great presence these past four years, it won't be the same without you. Good luck man.

Everyone else, bring on next year!

The Heartbreak
Man, I really, really, really thought we could take on Memphis.  I love our guys and I just want to cry, it wasn't even close.  What the hell?  Memphis is not the better team, no way, we just got some bad breaks.  Too many good looks that just didn't go in.  Now, I think Collison comes back (but I said AA would be back last year), does Love?  What were his stats for this game?  He wasn't the overpowering beast we all expected, was he?  God, this totally sucks.  Love, come back, please!

Thank you, Lorenzo.
You have been a true warrior and a great winner for UCLA.  You gave everything you got to us over the last four years and have helped us reach great success.  Thanks again, Lorenzo.

Don't think we'll loose to the winner this year
I really don't think Memphis will win against NC.

Great season and all, BUT
I think DC totally quit.

How else do you call that?  Fouls out with 3 min to play on a b.s. foul?  Really!?  How else is anyone supposed to view that!?

Evil wins.
That is the most damaging part of all this.  Memphis is the dirtiest program in the game and UCLA is the most elite of the teams that do it right.

As long as we got Coach Howland, we will be back.

An Open Letter to Whoever Keeps Putting Up Mojo
Yes it's fun, yes I like it - but this is three years in a row we haven't finished out and gotten Banner 12.  Can we retire the mojo and come up with something else that's fun and likeable?  Nothing against you or Austin Powers, I'm a huge fan of it all I think the idea is great it's just this is three years in a row.  It's starting to be a negative tradition.

Let's not use superstition
as an excuse.

Memphis has a ton of talent and they hit their shots.

Some quick thoughts
Westbrook played a good game, 10/19 (although a few of the points came in the very end).  At this point in time, I would say his performance increased his draft pick--he was really able to run with the Memphis team.

Love played a great first half, but ended up shooting 4/12.  I was not so happy when he went to take open 3s.  Although he is able to hit them, when he steps out we lose all our rebounding advantage.  You have to give some credit to Dorsey for playing a great defensive second half, but I think overall we didn't get Love the ball inside as much as we needed to.  I am a little bit suprised this wasn't addressed early in the second half (or if it was, that the players didn't make the plays) after Dorsey got 3 fouls.

Luc did well with rebounding (13), and had quite a few good drives to the basket (ending in 12 points).  However he also took some outside jumpers which were unnecessary.

Shipp started out draining 2 threes, which was great.  Later he started driving to the basket, which is also what we needed more than him hitting 3s.  Overall, I think he should spend the offseason working very hard on his shot consistency and his lateral movement.

Collison, ... he's been a great point guard all year except in 3 games (Washington, WKU, and Memphis).  I understand that Rose is a very possible 1st round pick that made DJ Augustin look average.  However, DJ Augustin was still able to draw a few fouls.  I understand that the Memphis team is tall and atheletic, but to score only 2 points on 1/9 shooting is way below his potential.  Collison had 28 points driving in a Stanford zone and shooting over two 7 footers, and I just feel that for whatever reason he was off tonight.

I think the style Memphis plays suprised our players.  I think our backcourt and other teams felt that they had to "match" Memphis's backcourt, and as a result made some uncharacteristically poor decisions under uncharacteristic pressure (with the exception of Westbrook).  Therefore, overall we too many perimeter shots and didn't get the ball to Love (who was clearly tired by the end of the game) enough.

On Memphis's end, I just have to say "wow" on CDR and Rose, who drew the fouls (13 and 12) and then made them (87%).  In comparison, the rest of their team had 0 fouls.  The two players combined for 53 of 78 total Memphis points on 48% shooting.

I have to say that I am disappointed that it wasn't even a close game.  We had a couple runs, but they were VERY short because we couldn't stop Memphis; they had dribble penetration seemingly at will (hard to play man against dribble-drive offense).  Nevertheless, we had a great season and I look forward to next year.
