Preparing For A Nuclear Scenario

Before you read this post, let me warn you right here: this post will not be for the faint of heart. I think given the uncertainty we are facing in next few weeks in terms of who is going to stay or who is going to leave, it might make sense to mentally get ready for the worst case scenario now. That way no matter what happens we can figure out now what’s the worst case scenario for the prospects of our hoops team next season.

So with that in mind let’s be cognizant of couple of dates.

  • April 27: Players have until April 27 to declare whether or not they will enter the draft. Some may decide to hire an agent. If they do that they will not be able to return to the college game. However, some may decide to "test the NBA waters" just like AA did after his sophomore season. In this case, the player will be able to work out for the NBA teams and get feedback on their draft stock. And in case depending on what they hear they will have to make a decision on whether or not to keep themselves in the draft. That takes me the second date:

  • June 16: That’s the date by which players who haven’t signed an agent will have to decide whether or not to stay in the draft.
So anyway you cut it, we will have some anxious weeks ahead of us in terms of playing the waiting game on figuring out who is going to stay and who is going to leave.

Well, I am not sure if I really want to play the waiting game. I rather figure out now what’s the worst case scenario we are looking at and in that case how we should approach/look forward to the 6th season under Coach Howland at UCLA.

With that in the mind I see the following players as gone:

KL: I understand right now there are some doubts in certain NBA scout circle about KL being a lottery pick. However, my gut tells me that KL is gone as long as gets the feedback of him being drafted high in the first round. I am going to speculate that KL will announce for the NBA draft by April 27, perform well, and not return to UCLA for his second season.

DC: Again see what I wrote above re. KL. Even though DC’s stock might have gone down due to his performances against Memphis and WKU, I still think he is going to declare for the draft and keep his name in it. I don’t see DC coming back for his senior season at UCLA.

RW: Yes, I get the point that RW still needs another year of seasoning in college game as a pure point guard. However, if a kid gets a guarantee from any NBA team that he is going to be drafted in the first round, it is hard to fault him for going pro. And I am not going to be one of those fans who is going to put his or her selfish reasons above what is most important to that kid’s self interest as determined by himself and those around him. So, with that in mind, right now I am resigned to concede RW not returning for his junior season at UCLA.

Now that the big 3 is out of the way, I am going to go ahead and take another step in terms of assuming the worst:

JS: I can see how it could be emotionally difficult for JS to return for his 5th season at UCLA, as most of his friends from last four years will be gone. I am not sure JS is even worthy of a second round pick in the NBA, but he could potentially explore a pro career in Europe (just like his older brother who went to Cal). So let’s stay JS is gone.

LRMAM & AA2: According to Diane Pucin in the LA Times, LRMAM on Saturday said:
"I want to be back and win a title."
Honestly, I am not going to take that as a sure fire sign of LRMAM returning consider what AA said following the Florida game last year:
"I have a lot of respect for my teammates, the coaching staff, the university that's done a lot for me," Afflalo said. "Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for some good things. Coming back next year is something I have to think about. But my sole purpose in coming to UCLA was to win a national championship. I'm still intent on doing that."
Well we know the rest of the story. I think chances are there that LRMAM may come back. But as I said at the very beginning, this post is about assuming the worst. So I am going to go ahead and speculate that LRMAM will not be coming back next season. And his departure, will also lead AA2 leave UCLA since he will be finishing up his degree this June. BTW the idea that AA2 could leave should not be a surprise. The issue first surfaced back in Jan when it was reported that he was on track to graduate early.

Hey, are you still with me? Let’s make the situation even more dire. What if Dragovic decides it’s lot more fun jacking up shots in the Euro Leagues back home instead of learning to play defense and fundamentals of the game from Coach Howland.

So how will the rotation look without all of those guys mentioned above? Well here is my attempt:
1 2 3 4 5
Holiday Roll Stanback Gordon Keefe
Anderson Lee

Again obviously this the nuclear scenario I am envisioning at this case. But honestly, even if the nuclear scenario were to take place, do you think actually think it would be all over and that this team will not compete? Hardly.

First, even if this scenario took place, I would be Coach Howland and his staff would figure out a way to bring in more players to add to the 4 person 2008 class. Right now the other prospects who are on UCLA’s scout.com board are: Ater Majok, Krys Faber, and Jeff Taylor. I think it’s a good bet that Coach Howland and his staff will be amping up their recruiting efforts in the coming days to intensify their efforts to pursue any of the aforementioned recruits or others who haven't popped up in our recruiting radar. Don’t forget how they were able to land RW two years ago, just days after JF had decided to go pro.

Now that I have typed out the nuclear scenario, let me just say even if this were to take place, I would be more than excited about the upcoming hoops season. I would be just as excited about next year like when I was counting the days for JF, AA, JS and LMR to get started on the campus. Even in this scenario, I will get just as much joy as following our program, because it will be another opportunity to watch Coach Howland mold talented young man into well grounded basketball players, who will give everything they have to make the four letters in front of their jersey proud. It will be a new core, gelling with a whole new chemistry. And I think that’s a strong enough core that will win at least 20 something games, and get better as the season goes along, and will set up the foundation of yet another set of contending teams in the following years.

Again, as I have said repeatedly in this post already, this is the worst case scenario. It could very well be that LRMAM will decide to come back for another season as well as JS & AA2. And if they do our prospects will be even better.

Anyway, I wanted to make sure I get the worst case scenario out in the open … so if it were to actually happen we are all ready for it. I personally am not going to engage in any kind of campaign pleading KL, DC, RW or others to stay. As I have said before if those kids want to go, then I will be supportive of them and wish them luck. And we are not going to allow any kind of attacks on those kids who have given everything they have in their time at UCLA to make all of us proud on and off the court.

From the way I see it here, even if the worst case scenario were to take place, Coach Howland has such a strong foundation in place, that we will have enough talent to fight, scratch, and claw our way into another exciting season with bunch of youngsters who just like Coach Howland’s first class at UCLA, will build the foundation of yet another series of contenders in the coming seasons.

As an alum, I couldn’t ask for more in today’s world of college basketball from Coach Howland. So what ever happens by June 16, I am ready for it.

GO BRUINS.

That would be brutal.
If all those guys left. I think LRMAM and AA2 stay. I have a feeling DC might stay as well because he is looking like a late first round pick at this point.

I'd bet DC is gone
It would be great if LRMAM and AA2 stays. In my book that would be the best case scenario. We really need those two next year. Either way we should brace for the worst case scenario and think it out now.

I hope you are wrong about DC.
But I'm sure you are right. :(

I have never heard of
people leaving early who are not potential NBA prospects. The scenarios with Shipp, Luc, and Aboya seem bizare. I know that this is worst case, but do you have any examples of this type?

by Dodger Hater on Apr 7, 2008 9:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Overestimation of NBA prospects
There are a ton of other guys declaring early and not being drafted.  These guys stand out to me because I remember watching them and thinking what the hell they were thinking declaring.  Some of them were NBA type players who I thought were prematurely leaving while the others made me scratch my head.  These are the ones I pulled out because a lot of them were highly touted (Golden Arches) coming out of high school.  These names are taking me back to some memories.

Victor Page (G-Town)
Jason Osborne (Louisville)
Randell Jackson (FSU)
Winfred Walton (Fresno, started @Syracuse)
Albert White (Mizzou, started @ Michigan)
Schea Cotton (Alabama, almost UCLA)
Maurice Evans (Texas)
Josh Powell (NC State)
Doug Wrenn (U-Dub)
Keleena Azubuike (Kentucky)
Sean Banks (Memphis)
John Gilchrist (Maryland)
Randolph Morris (after FR season)
Shavlik Randolph (Duke)
Anthony Roberson (Florida)
Matt Walsh (Florida)
Kennedy Winston (Bama)
Curtis Stinson (Iowa St.)
Darius Washington (Memphis)

DeAngelo Collins (Inglewood, on Pistons now)
Lenny Cooke (NY; was battling Lebron for #1 at the HS ranks)
Jackie Butler (Suppose to go to Miss St.)

Don't forget our own
JaRon Rush, Jerome Moiso, and Trevor Ariza.

Ariza & Moiso
got drafted.  Can't blame Moiso at all since he was drafted in the lottery.  Only Jaron (forgot about him) did not get drafted after declaring early.

Sorry
didn't realize your list were those who weren't drafted. I know Moiso and Ariza were drafted, but felt they belonged in the long list of "those who had no business coming out early".

geez
I've forgotten just how much talent was wasted under the Steve Lavin era. It's really incredible how many players have gone from that era to playing consistent basketball in the NBA, some at star levels...

by blinkshot on Apr 7, 2008 10:56 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Indeed
These guys made it to all those Sweet 16s without a coach!  No doubt we should have won it all in 1997, and Howland would have probably made 3-4 final fours with the guys Quagmire had in the late 90s!

by charnaw on Apr 12, 2008 11:42 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

One thing the guys on the list have in common
I have never heard of even one of them.  (There is a high likelihood that none of them have ever heard of me either, so I guess we're even.)

by Fox 71 on Apr 8, 2008 4:57 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

AA2

The situation with Alfred Aboya is not bizarre at all.  As an example of the kind of young men who come to UCLA to play for Coach Howland, Aboya is on track to graduate this year.  Playing ball and getting enough credits for a poli sci degree in 3 years is amazing (I was a poli sci major, and it took me 4 years with IM ball).

Who could blame him for wanting to start his new life back home?  Great for us if he wants to stay and take postgrad courses for another year, great for him either way.

by islandbruin on Apr 8, 2008 6:45 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Apparently
J'mison Morgan may decommit from LSU, and if he does, he may be interested.  Howland could definitely use some depth in the low post.

In the "nuclear" scenario, I think the backcourt play will still be pretty good and pretty deep too, it's the post play that would be the problem.

by Odysseus on Apr 7, 2008 6:32 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeap ... Post play is the key
That is why main concern next few weeks are LRMAM and AA2. If we get those two back I will be jumping up and down. I am counting the big-3: KL, DC, and RW gone.

Morgan would be great. Yet there is the "fit" issue. I don't think he will fit the culture of UCLA athletics.

by Nestor on Apr 7, 2008 6:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

"Fit" Issues?
I don't know if you are liberty to define that more but if you could, what specifically does that mean? Grades? Attitude? I understand if you can't get in detail.

by Raisin on Apr 7, 2008 7:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

"Fit"
It's an issue at UCLA but not so much at Tim Floyd or at John Calipari's program. I will leave it at that.

by Nestor on Apr 7, 2008 7:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks
I see what you mean.

Not to distract from the original post
but Mata, Deandre Robinson and Matt Lee were all playing basketball in the wooden center a few minutes ago.  It's no surprise obviously, but I think it just further demonstrates that these guys are a team through and through!

Although it is hard to read what we might have to face come June 16th, wonderful post Nestor!

by bruin08 on Apr 7, 2008 6:41 PM PDT   0 recs

I am hoping
what I laid out is the worst case scenario. I think we will be better served if keep it in mind.

At the end of the day I think we will have people at the 4 or 5 either in LRMAM or AA2, or kids Howland and his staff will bring in. We are going to be allright one way or another.

So don't get down after reading my post. Just use it as a reference point for your mindset in the coming weeks.

by Nestor on Apr 7, 2008 6:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Safe to say
that our backcourt situation will be alright next year, with 3 top guards coming in and Roll defintely in the mix.

It's the frontcourt that really concerns me right now. Safe to say that depth here will be an issue at the very least. I hope Howland has a better plan to address this than he did in defending CDR and Rose..... ;-)

One of my favorite sayings
Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

No one knows what will happen, but I'm sure CBH is planning for the worst.

I really want JS to come back. I will not concede that he is a "European" player, yet.

He is one of our hardest workers -- started off on fire this year, and there is no reason he cannot come back and have  a consistent, superb senior year.

He got a lot of BS press coverage from people who did not understand his contributions. I truly hope they have not stolen his joy. I look forward to seeing that smile in a Bruin uniform for another year.

Hit me with your best shot!
Nestor!

Is that the best you can do? Didn't even raise a welt!

The post-atomic era at UCLA means two things: More scholarships and more kids wanting to fill the holes to say that they were the guys who could get it done when Kevin Love could not (meant very respectfully, of course).

I realize this is the hot-stove league, but you guys gotta remember/respect the traditions: Wooden's Wickes & Rowe 'tween year teams, Larry Brown's "Bruins in Ruins" run, and Jim "Ball Burner" Harrick's '95 kids.

What's on paper is NOT what's on the court. You want more proof of that, take a look at what KU did when they were 9 points down to Memphis with less than 3 minutes to play.

Sure glad I am rooting for Howland and UCLA; sure hate to be a Memphis Tiger fan and have to wait another decade to show up to the dance.

..but, in fairness, paper is all we have to work with at this point. That notwithstanding, and in consideration of your nuclear option, I can't wait until June 16th to see what miracles Howland's gonna pull off to fill any holes.

God, it's great to be a Bruin!

interesting thoughts
i don't think shipp would go try and showcase himself in europe when he still has a year of eligibility at ucla to prove his case to nba teams. he could be one of the go to guys with jrue and maybe luc next year, and if he doesn't have another nationally publicized slump, he might get drafted somewhere.

no sure about luc, i think athletically and defensively i like his prospects to have a long impactful nba career as well as anyone on the team other than westbrook.

by stephons on Apr 7, 2008 9:57 PM PDT   0 recs

Keep an eye on
Faber and Taylor's offer status (both currently have no offer, according to Scout). We've had Majok offerred for a couple of months, and he seems to be a heavy UConn lean right now. If one or both of those two get offered in the next week or so, the frontcourt portion of your nuclear scenario may be coming to fruition.

well
The good news is that Howland can now turn to recruiting. As players decided whether to stay or go, scholarships will be freed up and recruiting for future years can commence.

by blinkshot on Apr 7, 2008 10:22 PM PDT   0 recs

Howland has more than recruiting right now
He'll be busy making calls to NBA GMs and scouts, getting as much information as possible in helping his guys make the decision of staying or turning pro.  And last year Howland only had AA to work with.  This year he'll be evaluating draft positioning for KL, RW, DC, Luc and Shipp.

(I added Luc and Shipp as I believe they will excercise their right to see how they compare playing against others and to get feedback on their games).

by bornagainbruin on Apr 8, 2008 8:47 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i said it in the other thread
I said this in the diary post on talent but we should be happy with this incoming class. Think back to Howland's first class with Farmar, Afflalo, Shipp, and Mata-Real. We brought in a pure point guard, a shooting guard who can handle the ball, a wing guard, and a raw power forward with a knack for defense.

This class coming in is damn near identical. A pure point in Anderson, an athletic and strong combo guard in Holiday, a wing in Lee, and a raw defensive presence in Gordon. Its scary how identical a lot of these players are.

But these new kids are supposed to be more highly rated, more athletic, longer, stronger than our first class and they are supposed to be just as class acts. If this class is as successful as Howland's first class, then we will have great times ahead of us.

Go UCLA!

by madmaxucla on Apr 7, 2008 10:35 PM PDT   0 recs

Don't forget about 2009
We already have Reeves Nelson who we had to go up against UNC to get and local product Renardo Sidney who is the top power forward coming out of the 2009 class.

The hardest thing is seeing this group of kids we love go eventually... but the beauty of college basketball is there will be a new crop who we will love just as much as the past

Can't Imagine Collison Leaving
After Rose showed him up to be a defensive liability, Collison will have to come back to 1) get in the weight room and build his muscles to cable strength and 2) increase his NBA stock to mid first round, instead of early second round.  I predict he's back.  I am not even sure Love is gone, depending on whether he's a top ten pick. Under NBA rules, he loses a lot of money over three years if he's not a top ten pick.

by 75NatChamps on Apr 7, 2008 11:24 PM PDT   0 recs

Disagree
Rose didn't show up DC per se. Rose is a superstar type talent and huge for a PG.  DJ Augustine who isn't too shabby himself couldn't handle him nor the KU guards and whomever else.  He is a match-up nightmare for all PG's unless you have comparable size and speed.

DC's strength is his speed and NBA scouts know this.  DC is still projected to go in the late first round.  His stock dropped but not by much per NBA scouts because they were surprised by what happened against Rose.

DC will come back if he wants another shot at a title and doesn't want to leave UCLA after going 1-9.

Not "were"
but "weren't"

by BlueReign on Apr 7, 2008 11:51 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

its hard to say
Its hard to say how much Collison has dropped because we're all forgetting that Rose is a superior talent. Keep in mind that during the year, Rose didn't need to put up gaudy numbers. However, during the tourney, the guy put up 21/7/7... those are some  plain sick numbers for a guy who supposedly hasn't learned a proper mid-range or deep jump shot. Sure, Collison might've gotten schooled, but he got schooled by a point guard that will be one of the best in the NBA next year and going into the future.

by blinkshot on Apr 7, 2008 11:51 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

By your logic
Augustin will stick around for one more year because he got torched in one game by Rose. We know that's not happening. DC's stock is not going to go down all that much based on just one game.

by bluestreet on Apr 8, 2008 7:17 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree that if the players want to go pro...
then they should go pro.  There is no need for any of us to pull a "Coach K" and be disappointed in any of the players for wanting to realized their dreams of going to the NBA for our own selfish reasons.  They will always be representing UCLA even in the NBA.

by bruindodger on Apr 8, 2008 1:06 AM PDT   0 recs

Agreed
Sometimes we seem to forget that there is an issue of money and a livelihood behind it all.

Maybe DC will remember his knee injury and the fact that he could be out $millions if it had been worse.  Maybe he wont get as much as a late first rounder but I would guess ALL of the posters on this site would not mind making low first round salaries for the next couple of years.

I think the NCAA should provide insurance to all participants.  If they pooled everyone it would not be that expensive (the VAST majority would have no real NBA potential so would be paying in for those few that do).  Of course I am dreaming but maybe they could at least allow schools to pay for it.

Go Team Go!

Just glancing at the potential depth chart
Not much to add except that it's a good thing Matt Lee is graduating. Between him and Malcolm Lee, "Lee" on the back of the jersey would be ambiguous, as would "M. Lee".

Gordon Gone....
NBA time for Indiana gaurd Gordon. No surprise.
Go UCLA!

by madmaxucla on Apr 8, 2008 6:14 AM PDT   0 recs

Well, I guess that is a nuclear scenario.
But it is a little too much for me.  Shipp leaves b/c he has no friends and wants to play in Europe?  Just don't see it happening.  Shipp WILL come back next year precisely because he could be an NBA player if he plays a complete season.  Same with Luc.  (I understand that you were going with a nuclear scenario--but it's like getting prepared for a Shark attack in my opinon.)

However, assuming this nuclear scenario pans out, then I think you were overly optimistic about the result.  This team could win 20 games, but it wouldn't be easy (and 20 wins wouldn't even guarantee us a tourney slot).  Holiday would have to have a huge scoring season, Stanback would have to have a miraculous improvement, and Gordon would have to give something on the offensive end.  Plus Keefe and Roll would have to have good years, and EVERYONE would have to stay healthy.

If we are thinking nuclear--we can't expect best case scenarios from our players (even though Howland will make them better).  Also you have Lee and Anderson as back-ups, which tells me they couldn't get in over Roll or Stanback--which would be sort of a negative, particularly for Lee who was an All-American.

It would be fun to watch the team--as it is with any Bruin team.  And it would be great to see improvement on a young team.  But the nuclear scenario would be known as "rebuilding."  More like Florida this year, then UCLA the last two years.  We had trouble scoring this year--think for a second how we would score next year under the nuclear scenario.  Scary.

Has Everyone Forgotten About NAU...
Everyone in the Media says Ben Howland is not open offensively. That he stifles down his players with his methodical approach to offense. I still remember commentators saying that Afflalo did not flourish offensively, like he would have at other schools, under Howland because of the type of offense they ran. How quickly they have forgotten that when he coached NAU, he operated and run and gun offense to give his team a chance. They would jack up threes like their life depended on it...
Next year a core of offensively gifted kids are coming in to carry the torch. Malcolm Lee has been projected to be a one and done player by some scouts. If they can keep up the defensive intensity and provide that additional offensive firepower, this will be a team to reckon with. Howland will adjust his coaching to suit the teams strenght. Yes there will be growing pains but I believe they will be okay...

SI Top 10 Next Season
For what it is worth, SI's Luke Winn put out a top 10 for next season, which is obviously dependent on who opts for the NBA or not.  He has UCLA at 3 (behind UNC and UConn) assuming KL and DC leave, but RW stays.
