Dohn: NOT SO FAST ON LOVE edit: NO SO FAST ON COLLISON EITHER

Brian Dohn just spoke to Kevin Love's mom:

I just got off the phone with Kevin Love's mother and she was adamant no decision was yet made, and was disappointed about reports she called "false" that her son already told UCLA coach Ben Howland he was leaving.

Update: Brian Dohn also just spoke to Darren Collison:

I just got off the phone with Darren Collison, who said the report he was leaving early for the NBA draft "is not true. I haven't even talked to my parents yet." I posted a small EAPoe comment earlier based on the idea that LA Times wouldn't risk their reputation by reporting something so big without confirmation, but now I realize that LA Times doesn't have a reputation to risk.

Obviously if Kevin Love stays, the implications will be huge.

If Collison stays, the implications will be huge. Expanding this will result in filler text to meet the minimum character requirement.

They always deny
before official announcements.  We'll see.

by Rich1996UCLA on Apr 8, 2008 10:00 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeah, we'll see
Obviously it could very well still be true, but "adamant" is an adjective I would not expect to be associated with routine denialspeak.

by dokein on Apr 8, 2008 10:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

why would they deny now that the season is over
that makes no sense.

They could still go, but that doesn't mean the times had the story right. Since its the times, my guess is their source is Tim Floyd.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

by silverlakebruin on Apr 8, 2008 10:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Because
They want to announce it themselves at a press conference.

by SuperBruinMan on Apr 8, 2008 11:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I doubt Kevin Love's mom would lie about it
The decision won't be made until the family discusses. Of course Love will most likely go to the NBA, but that isn't really a scoop.

LA Times
what a joke.  They just reported recently that Brett Favre was looking to play for another team; or his agent was looking around the league for someone that would trade for him.

by bruin95 on Apr 8, 2008 10:05 PM PDT   0 recs

There was also the Tupac story
they had to officially retract that also.

by freesia39 on Apr 8, 2008 10:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What they say?
He was walking around like Elvis.  :)

by Rich1996UCLA on Apr 9, 2008 12:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

They ran with a story
that P. Diddy (puff daddy, sean combs, whatever) had something to do with the murder but that was discovered to be untrue and their source pretty much fabricated it.

by freesia39 on Apr 9, 2008 9:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

And who was their "source"?
I'm confident it was the guy in the next cubicle.

by Fox 71 on Apr 9, 2008 1:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Sources
I would bet that the LA Times' source is Brian Dohn, and that Brian Dohn's source is the LA Times.

by bornagainbruin on Apr 9, 2008 1:49 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The problem with this is
They're always going to deny that they've come to a decision if they're planning on announcing it a news conference.

Collison's denial does sound pretty genuine though. "I haven't even talked to my parents yet."

by SuperBruinMan on Apr 8, 2008 10:15 PM PDT   0 recs

Fox reporting them gone as well
Claiming to have the story independently. Not just the LA Times risking some of their rep (not that I think they are coming back, though it does seem reasonable that an official decision is a couple more days away).

by bruinhoo on Apr 8, 2008 10:26 PM PDT   0 recs

Fox, FSN or Foxsports.com?
Because Foxsports.com just has the report from the LAT. No independent report or putting their own neck out there.

by ryebreadraz on Apr 8, 2008 10:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Fox Sports Radio
claiming that they broke the story themselves (2 hours after the LATimes story) for what its worth.

by bruinhoo on Apr 8, 2008 10:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Got it
well I don't expect to have either of them next year so I'm not going up and down with these reports.

by ryebreadraz on Apr 8, 2008 10:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
Seems to merely be a matter of premature timing with this report, not that I expect the news to be any different once Love and DC talk w/their families.

by bruinhoo on Apr 8, 2008 11:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Not that it matters much
from our POV because I, too, fully expect the result to be the same in the end, but we do have a problem here. These jackals, in their haste to be the first to break the story, essentially fabricated this report, nevermind that at the moment, it's completely inaccurate. They just wanted to be first. That's the MSM nowadays. And we're supposed to trust what they say on other issues?

by Tydides on Apr 9, 2008 12:05 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It's not much of a risk
Chances are they're gone.  If so, they make out well.  If not, oh well.

by SuperBruinMan on Apr 8, 2008 10:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Fox 71 has made no announcement
Fox 71 (the nation's most authoritative news source) refuses to release an official statement.  "We haven't even decided whether to recognize Kansas as NCAA champion" one Fox 71 source speaking on condition of anonymity said early this morning.  "We have a team of lawyers reviewing the Final Four results, and we believe that UCLA may yet be declared National Champions."

(Fox 71 is not affiliated with Fox Sports, and does not eat free food offered in the press box.)

by Fox 71 on Apr 9, 2008 5:14 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Now that's a stroty
I can run with.

Very funny.

Can I have your free food??

by artybruin on Apr 9, 2008 8:01 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Coming from Dohn
it must be wrong.  So either KL's mom and DC didn't deny the reports, or KL and DC are, in fact, leaving.  Either way, it's bad news for Bruin fans.

by gbruin on Apr 9, 2008 12:54 AM PDT   0 recs

I don't necessarily think Doh!n is wrong
all the time. But obviously we raise red flags any time he makes a report or bases an opinion on his magical "unnamed sources". In this case, the sources are cited, and I don't think there are many reporters bold enough to take that kind of direct quote and spin it into something else.

However, in the end, I believe both will be gone, and that's all that really matters.

by Tydides on Apr 9, 2008 1:57 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You're right.
Unfair of me to throw a cheap shot like that, and I shouldn't take out my frustrations on him.  I guess it's kinda like how I hate my dentist, when I'm really just bummed at facing what I don't want to face (losing KL, DC, RW, LMR, maybe AA2, etc).

Howland's Presser today
Anyone know what time it will be or if it will be broadcast anywhere?
greg in denver

by gbruin on Apr 9, 2008 2:28 AM PDT   0 recs

Seen this movie before
Love and DC are gone. It will be made official today after Howland's press conference. You can bet the house on it.

Westbrook is about 98% gone too. That 2% I'm leaving to the small chance that he may just decide to "test the waters", not hire an agent, have a bad workout in front of NBA scouts, etc....

At this point we should just consider losing those three a given, hope that it stops there, and move on.

"You don't make it to the Final Four three straight times for no reason..Obviously coaching has something to do with it." Darren Collison

by godblesstyus95 on Apr 9, 2008 5:23 AM PDT   0 recs

Expect this not to drag on and on..
Howland (and KL and DC and RW) will want to clear the air as soon as possible about their status. It serves no one to wait, to drag this on and on. The three will probably evaluate their market value with parental and professional advice this week and make a decision. But, if I am Love, why would I want to spend between now and April 27th being hounded by reporters about my decision?

If they stay, then Howland and UCLA can make plans for the Fall. If they don't stay, then he can contact, notify, and pursue potential replacement recruits.

God, it's great to be a Bruin!

by whp68 on Apr 9, 2008 6:40 AM PDT   0 recs

This is all just a guess...
Since Collison has tested the waters before, and since we have way too many guards coming in next year, i'm sure he will go and get an agent right away.

Love will definitely go to the camp and test the waters, but he won't hire an agent I feel right away...leaving us all hanging...

by uCla on Apr 9, 2008 7:15 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Collison
Hasn't tested the waters before.

by Raisin on Apr 9, 2008 8:39 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

oh woops
oh woops...well then nm my guess on collison

by uCla on Apr 9, 2008 9:43 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

All of this may be true
But they could still both be leaving.

by jjreicher on Apr 9, 2008 7:03 AM PDT   0 recs

Three wealthy and influential alumni
have confirmed that they will all either leave, or they will stay at UCLA, or one or more (depending on some such, etc.) will stay or go.

by Class of 86 on Apr 9, 2008 8:22 AM PDT   0 recs

HA!

by Rich1996UCLA on Apr 9, 2008 5:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What??!
I think definitely they all are staying or they are all leaving or a combination of any one or two of them may be staying or going!! That's a lock. I bet my life on it!

by cyberdbk on Apr 9, 2008 8:41 AM PDT   0 recs

Inside info
And that is from me a not so wealthy and influential alumnus

by cyberdbk on Apr 9, 2008 8:44 AM PDT   0 recs

I just heard from a reliable source that..
Fox71 is leaving.  They think Tylides is staying but Nestor is calling a press conference late this afternoon to neither confirm nor deny any of the above.

by popopapa on Apr 9, 2008 10:51 AM PDT   0 recs

Fox71 should stay
Another year in BN will definitely raise his stock, as he really needs to develop his game watching skills with the volume on.

Prof 66 though, we knew all year he was gone.  Hopefully the Trojie Times will draft him to run that brilliantly conceived combined UCLA-$cjc blog.

I am leaving early
too for the summer, but haven't yet contacted an agent for my travel itineraries.  So that means if I  change my mind after finding out the fares might be prohibitively expensive due to higher fuel costs, I may be back staying with BruinsNation.

Under the federal FCC guidelines, this is an option available for me.

by Htse005 on Apr 9, 2008 11:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I asked my boss about leaving early..
..and he said it was o.k. -- especially when I told him I came in late to make up for it.
God, it's great to be a Bruin!

by whp68 on Apr 9, 2008 11:46 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I would rather trade Fox71 . . .
for a geezer to be named later.

by charnaw on Apr 9, 2008 12:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Which reminds me of a true story
Long ago, the Tigers traded a journeyman catcher named Harry Chiti to the Mets for a player to be named later.  At the end of the season, the player the Mets named was Harry Chiti, making him to this day the only player to be traded for himself.

And on a side note, I think I am taking way too much heat here.  I am not declaring for the draft, and in fact have four years of eligibility left.  Unfortunately, I doubt that I could get into the school with my high school GPA and my SAT scores.

by Fox 71 on Apr 9, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Not to mention
the new SAT is out of 2400. All of us that took it prior to 2005 I think look even worse than we did before.

No grades, huh?
Trent Johnson is dialing your number as we speak.

by gbruin on Apr 9, 2008 1:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If only he were in 8th grade
Timmeh would have offered him already.

by Tydides on Apr 9, 2008 1:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Never too late
I admit I'm guessing, but isn't Fox (...71, so about 21 + 37..) somewhere right around OJ Mayo's age anyway?

Or vice versa?

greg in denver

by gbruin on Apr 9, 2008 1:31 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No he's older than that
Same age as Davon Jefferson though.

by popopapa on Apr 9, 2008 1:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Dickie Noles
Actually became the second baseball player to be traded for himself when he was traded for a PTBNL to the Tigers from the Cubs during the 1987 season. Then, the Tigers returned Noles to my Cubbies after the season was over.

by Raisin on Apr 9, 2008 1:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Come on, your not that old..
you have more than four years of eligibility left in you : )
O.A.

by Ollie on Apr 9, 2008 5:56 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I was waiting for that
It's a hard ch, not a soft ch.  Although the guy's lifetime numbers made a soft ch much more descriptive.

by Fox 71 on Apr 9, 2008 6:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

espn news about to cover the story of
The Love of NBA Money" as they put it.

by popopapa on Apr 9, 2008 2:03 PM PDT   0 recs

if two of the three stay...
We can almost guarantee a championship. Why is it always one year too late. Afflalo would have helped us big time this year. Im kind of getting tired of the close but no cigar speech as an Alum.

by Lboogee31 on Apr 9, 2008 4:17 PM PDT   0 recs

We can never guarantee a championship
or almost guarantee one. In a single elimination tournament, you never know what could happen. One bad game and you're done or one game where the other team is shooting unconsciously and you're done. We would be the favorite should 2 or 3 return and have an awfully good chance at a title, but nothing is ever guaranteed.

by ryebreadraz on Apr 9, 2008 4:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Re: we can never guarantee a championship
I know...I said almost.
