BN 2.0 is Set to Launch on Thursday, May 8

Bumping this up so everyone can see. Again this will actually happen during late Thursday night. So you will actually see the new site when you log on Friday morning. Also as mentioned your current username will be reserved for you in the new site. But if you want to get started and claim it right now, you can go here. GO BRUINS. -N

Ladies and gents of Bruin Nation:

If any of you read any other SBNation blogs frequently, you may have noticed that many of the MLB, NBA, and NFL sites have transitioned to what we're calling "SBN 2.0". If you haven't seen the redesign yet check out True Blue LA (Dodgers), Halos Heaven (Angels), Athletics Nations (As), McCovey Chronicles (Giants), and Gas Lamp Ball (Padres).

The changes that have been made to all of these sites is coming to Bruins Nation. And it is happening this Thursday.

Yes, BN 2.0 is launching on Thursday, May 8.

Since this will be a new platform, usernames will have to be reassigned. But don't worry, many of you will already have your user name saved for you when you log-in to SBN 2.0. However, there may be some cases in which your username is taken by a member of another site.

Some of the new features include:

Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster

BN will soon have all the basic information about the UCLA Bruins and hundreds of other teams. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, and as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step, so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so. We now have special pages that aggregate all blog posts written about games, players and teams. (Note: College Baseball stats are not available at this time)

Auto-refreshing Comments

You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.

As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.

FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)

We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.

FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.

The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.

IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.

FanShots

Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.

For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of UCLA material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.

Network-wide accounts

After you register for SBN 2.0, it will be easy to register with any blog in the network. Your profile will be your hope page, displaying your statistics as well as your blog memberships.

And of course, there's the visual redesign.

So as of right now unless there is a last minute hitch BN 2.0 is set to launch on Thursday, May, 9.

For now, head on over to a SBN 2.0 blogs like the ones mentioned above and create a network account. If you get that out of the way now, you'll have little to worry about on Thursday when BN 2.0 launches. Many thanks to Jake over to Building the Dam, who drafted this template post, which I customized for BN.

GO BRUINS.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Good to know
I've been waiting for this redesign. It looks good.
Class of 2010. GO BRUINS!

Over at McCovey Chronicles
their game day threads constantly get split up after 500-600 posts because the threads seriously lag.

Will that be an issue here too?  I know during the tourney we stopped posting gameday threads part 2 because of potential mojo killing.

The new layout is neat and it's nice that you are able to have the same account over other SBN blogs.  McC just seems a tag laggy at times for me (especially at work when I'm in the game day threads, but I also have the oldest computer known to mankind...)

SBN 2.0 is also active on goldenstateofmind (the warriors blog.)

Hmm
To be honest I have not been in game threads of any of the new 2.0 sites. I think we will see how it goes here. If the threads jamm up after 400 comments, we will definitely look into doing two open game threads. That should not be a problem.

by Nestor on May 4, 2008 8:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Over on Lookout Landing (M's)
we have to go to a new game thread every 600 comments or so, but we also have a tendency to post a lot of pictures. We usually wind up with about 3 threads per game. Once you're in the thread (with the auto-comment updating) it's fine, but if you leave the thread and try to manually refresh, it's a bitch and a half.

Suggestion
Over at the Bright Side of the Sun (Phoenix Suns Blog) they have a live blogging chat during games so that it is more of a continual conversation rather than posting a comment, then waiting to see what someone says, and then responding to it.  Is Bruins Nation going to implement something similar during its re-release because I thought this was a really cool feature and could have a major advantage here.

Ummm..that would be Thursday, May 8th..
..or, Friday, May 9th?

In any case, Nestor, I am sincerely grateful for the work that you put into BN and (as a software type) know what goes into an upgrade effort.

Thanks!

God, it's great to be a Bruin!

I like the design, exciting news on the change
O.A.

been spending more time at Athletics Nation lately
2.0 takes a few minutes getting used to, but does seem to be an upgrade, all in all.

by bruinhoo on May 3, 2008 11:16 PM PDT   0 recs

Based on the other sites I've visited
I'm not a fan of 2.0, but I'm going to withhold judgment until I see it here on BN.

by ryebreadraz on May 3, 2008 11:56 PM PDT   0 recs

I agree
I've visited a bunch of 2.0 sites and really dont like the aesthetics.  All the feature sound great, and I haven't tried posting or anything, so maybe I'll come to like it, but I just dont like the scheme very much.  For example, I really like the blue and gold theme on BN, but all the 2.0 sites have that lame gray hatched background with very little room for team colors, so they all look the same.  BN also uses blue bars to separate posts while 2.0 just uses space, which doesn't look as good imo.  Looks like a cheapo blog design that some guy in idaho uses for his cat blog or something.

by ranelar on May 4, 2008 10:06 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If you have any idea
what went into that redesign you wouldn't take that kind of cheap shot. The new BN will have the same color scheme we have here and it will have lot more features that will make it easy for folks to share pics, video etc.

Sure not everyone is going to like change. That happens. People always whine about change (even when it happens for the better). But what I am not going to be cool with taking cheap shots like that against  some people working very hard to make all this better. So easy to sit from the peanut gallery, doing nothing to contribute to the community and take those easy shots. If you are gonna do that stay on lurk mode. Thanks.

by Nestor on May 4, 2008 10:10 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Nestor
I said the features seem great but based on every single SBN 2.0 site I've visited, the scheme doesn't.  Everyone has that hatched grey background, so even if you keep the blue and gold scheme (which was an assumption anyway), it's going to be muted (hence my comment on lack of team colors).  The only cheap shot was re: cat blog, but really, using space to separate posts just doesn't look good.  Sorry.  And I'm hardly a lurker who does nothing to contribute to the community.  I've been here a while and contributed a lot.  I'm sorry for the cheap shot but everything else stands.

by ranelar on May 4, 2008 10:28 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If you don't like the scheme
then fine. It's your deal.

I am more than confident the new functionalities of BN 2.0 will make this a better community. If it doesn't work you, there is not much I can do for you.

But that doesn't mean you insult the guys who have been working non stop on this redesign. That is unacceptable and uncalled for. And I am not going to let people get away with that kind of cheap shots. Period. End of story.

Is it just me or...
did the ads at the top of the screen just show up?

Not complaining, just curious.

Cool
My screen name was reserved. Filled out the registration and I'm all set to go.

As of now, at one of the other blogs using SBN 2.0
format. I signed up for 2.0 at Athletics Nation, which BTW is an excellent site, which I would suggest taking a look at, A's fan or not.

by bruinhoo on May 5, 2008 8:39 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

same
Yep - works great... my name was reserved as well.  Just fill out the info -- click on the link emailed to you and you are all set for the changeover here on Thursday!  Lookin forward to the new features Nestor!

Poor Dohn. Their blog sight is straight out of 1988.
