NCAA Pulls 2 SuC Hoops Scholies For Academics Issues

USA Today:

The NCAA on Tuesday hit more than 200 college sports teams with scholarship reductions and other sanctions because of academic shortcomings.

Among them: Sweet 16 qualifier Tennessee and five other teams coming off NCAA appearances in men's basketball and two Bowl Championship Series entrants, Kansas and Hawaii, in football.

The programs posted subpar Academic Progress Rates (APRs), which have been computed by the NCAA for the past four years and hinge on retaining players and keeping them academically eligible. Twenty-six teams -- including 20 in the longtime problem sports of men's basketball, football and baseball -- were flagged as chronic underperformers and handed stiffer penalties including reductions in practice time.

Star-divide

Among the programs that failed to meet APRs: Timmeh's gapclosers:

In men's basketball: Fifty-three programs -- about one in every six in Division I -- were sanctioned, including 39 that drew actual penalties. Tennessee was among those getting "warning-shot" cuts of one or two scholarships. So were 2008 NCAA tournament participants Purdue, Kansas State, Southern California, South Alabama and Portland State.

So whose scholarship Timmeh going to pull? Lil Romeos?

Guess this is what happens when you fill a program with "student athletes" with diplomas from the internets. lololololol

My interpretation...
was that they were warned by the NCAA about their academics but won't face actual sanctions unless a certain number of their players remain academically ineligible. I could be wrong though.

Nope
They were not just warned. They are losing 2 scholarships. Here a link to rivals.com limiting them to 11 scholies instead of 13. A significant blow for a hoops program. Having to do with 11 instead of 13 makes a difference.

So much for Bruce Pearl...
In a week they've lost 2 scholies and had to dismiss two other players because of multiple failed drug tests.

It's a good thing they've got Chris Lofton to bring in some good publicity.

Umm...
What did I miss? Chris Lofton played for Tennessee, doesn't he?

And yet ...
justsc loses two scholarships because there weren't enough Senora Ross classes to go around, but the bu$hgate saga just doesn't warrant any interest from the ncaa.

This reminds me of when I was in the Army.  Most of our trucks wouldn't move without being towed, but we were listed as "combat ready" because all our paperwork was in spic and span and all the parts had been ordered.  The ncaa's lesson appears to be that as long as bu$h and his colleagues kept up appearances in class, it doesn't really matter how much they were getting paid.

Fox, don't you remembe the Army saying
"There's the right way, the wrong way, and the Army way." My old man was in the reserves for six years and I have heard my share of Army red tape stories.

There were a lot of Army sayings
most of which had a lot of F-bombs in them.  One of my favorites was the invariable response when you walked into the supply room to get something.  The guy behind the desk always had his feet up on the desk and was reading the paper.  (Apparently there was some Army regulation that made this mandatory.)  Before you could say anything and without looking up from his paper, the guy behind the desk said "The guy who takes care of that's not here today."

I loved that expression.

(And I liked the graffiti on the wall of the latrine (which is French for potty) -- "Flush twice - it's a long way to the mess hall.")

I just realized how long ago it was that I was keeping the world safe.  I'm getting old.

OJ2 and Duh!von's leaving, or will that show up in next years NCAA Data?

SuC already getting cute
This is from Adam Rose - a USC alum - who posts on Suc Blog in the Trojan Times:
The scholarships were actually cut this past season, 2007-08, due to previous low APR scores. It wasn't too evident on the court because the team had a number of walk-ons (including Daniel Hackett, whose tuition is covered by the school because his father is an employee of USC) and only 11 scholarships were handed out.

By the time things are sorted out this year, the school could be back up to 13 scholarships -- the full complement allowed by the NCAA.

Hiring a recruit's Dad as a "coach" so they don't to pay for a scholie. Only in Timmeh's world.

I guess they found a way to take the "hit" last year.

by bluestreet on May 6, 2008 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Will the same thing happen
for Dwayne Polee when he finally is able to sign his his LOI because his dad is the "Director of Basketball Operations" and thus a U$C employee?

That Is Actually Kind of Funny
"Oh well, that's ok, because my daddy already paid my ticket and I don't even have to go to court until next year."

So, um, I guess they..
..won't be closing the gap so fast, will they?

Look on the bright side: cheaper to fly to the one-and-done NCAA tournament appearances. Hell, if they keep going, maybe they could get 'em all into a big SUV and save a ton of loot.

God, it's great to be a Bruin!

Purdue
For me wins the "one of these things is not like the others" award for this issue.  Always thought of them being fairly strong academically.  At least in hoops, guess not.
