Lute Olson and Arizona

Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N

You know what's sort of weird to consider?

When Lute Olson took over at Arizona, they were an also-ran program in the conference.

And Olson deserves major respect for creating something out of nothing in the desert. He had many great players come through Tucson and many very good teams. He has multiple Final Four appearances and a single national title.

Now, a national title is nothing to snicker at -- it's a great accomplishment, the ultimate accomplishment. Nothing I can say can denigrate that accomplishment.

But ...

Jim Harrick has a national title. Gary Williams has a national title. Rollie Massimino has a national title. Jim Boeheim has a national title.

Maybe you get the picture: Sometimes you coach long enough and get into the right situation and you're in the right place at the right time enough times and you get the title.

I happen to think Lute Olson has had a great career. I'm not saying he's not a better coach than some guys on that list.

But consider this:

His program is in a shambles. They finished 7th last season and his two best players are in the draft. He's got an entirely new coaching staff (or will, once Josh Pastner takes that job at Memphis). His top recruit is having academic issues (there is an Internet report today that says Brandon Jennings might not qualify -- I bet he does, but still ...)

Add to all that Olson is an older guy and might not coach too many more years.

And, when push comes to shove, he might leave the program right where it was when he took it over -- an also ran -- and the entire Olson era will come and go with one national title, exactly the same amount of national titles that UCLA won during the Olson era.

Think about it: During the Olson era, UCLA had Walt Hazzard, Jim Harrick, Steve Lavin and now Ben Howland. Some of that era was considered sub par by UCLA fans. Harrick had some very good seasons and one really great season. Ben Howland has had three great seasons. But if the Olson era ended today, our record for that time would be very close to Arizona's. Theirs would be better -- I bet they won more conference titles during that span and they didn't suffer the lows of Hazzard and Lavin. But we've been to four final fours during the Olson era with one national title (and an elite eight appearance). We've won at least six Pac 10 titles during that time (I know that Harrick/Lavin won three straight and Howland has won three straight).

The funniest thing is: If Olson's era ended right now, we might actually be better vis-a-vis AZ than we were when he took over. He took over when Hazzard was the coach (I think he was, if it was Farmer, the point is still true). Now, Howland is the coach.

However many years later, we're almost back where we started and though the Olson era at AZ was undeniably a great one, did it really accomplish all that much more than UCLA did during the same time period?

(Side note: Another interesting point is that Arizona will soon -- two years, three years? -- learn what we learned in '75. That it is very hard to replace a legend. Except for a season here and a season there, it took us almost 30 years to find another top coach who would last more than two years. Ask Indiana and Kentucky fans how tough it can be to replace a legend. Arizona is going to find our soon enough.)

Don't forget
that Lute also went undefeated in conference play and won the Big West with Long Beach St then went to  a Final Four at Iowa. He's been a very good coach at all 3 of his D-1 coaching stops and has a national title, something only a select amount of coaches has. Is he an all-time great? No and his program does seem to be in shambles now, but he's been a very good coach.

Yeah ...
I emphasized that he was a top coach.

I was writing more about how UCLA and Arizona might end up right back where they started when the Olson era began at AZ and that what AZ fans consider their "grand tradition" wasn't that much more accomplished than UCLA's accomplishments during the same time period.

Just a matter of perspective.

But if it wasn't clear that I respect what Olson did at Arizona (and also in his prior stops, now that you mention it) than I did a poor job writing the post -- because that's not the impression I meant to leave readers with.

You certainly did
make it clear that Olson's a good coach. It was also clear that you were comparing UCLA and Arizona, but I just wanted to add in that point about LBSU and Iowa. Often people forget what Olson did at those 2 stops so I wanted to throw that in there. Your post made everything very clear though. Very well done.

Cool ...
thanks ... your points are well-taken.

Simon's gone, O'neil's gone
and Andy Katz is reporting that Pastner(recruiting) is leaving for the same position at Memphis. It is also reported that Mike Dunlap from the Nugget's will become an assistant under Olson.

Where did Simon go?
Not sure what he brought to the table, but where/when did he leave?

Last Season
UA is not a bubble team last year if Lute is coaching...O'Neill is a terrible head coach and he did a terrible job with those players.

Lute At Iowa
Being a native Iowan and a U of Iowa grad I vividly recall Lute's glory years in Iowa City (late 70's - early 80's) that included a trip to the Final 4 in 1980 (our Bruins went that year as well under Larry Brown).  After the 1980 season, the expectations were so high and fans so rabid that it eventually drove Lute away to Tucson.

I really don't like this
Lute Olson has done an amazing job at Arizona and established a legacy in coaching that few will establish.  The fact that he did it at ARIZONA makes it all that more impressive.  If I recall correctly, they were 2-24 or something like that the year before he took over.

Lute has definitely irritated me at times over the years.  He's a human, and has faults.  But, I think it is below Bruins to sort of try to dump on him or their program at this point.  I think there is little doubt he has not been the same since his wife died of cancer, and last year endured some very difficult personal problems that directly affected their program.

At any rate, I have a lot of respect for what Arizona accomplished over the last 20 years or whatever it is under Lute Olson.  It's not like we have a lot to be proud of over that same time period, other then a magical 1995 season and obviously the Howland era.

I wrote the original post ...
and I really don't think I dumped on him at all.

Actually
I am pretty proud of what UCLA accomplished during the Harrick years when I was a student at UCLA. From 91 to 96, in addition to winning number 12, we won 3 Pac-10 titles, an Elite Eight, and had Arizona on the defensive. If not for Harrick's unfortunate scandal we would have continued to reestablish ourselves as a national power following the Hazzard years.

Olson is a very good coach. But he was also incredibly lucky to benefit from the debacle that was Steve Lavin. And he went out of his way to promote and protect Steve Lavin in public sphere trying to make sure he remained at UCLA as long as possible to completely destroy our program.

I am sorry to hear what has happened to Lute's personal life. That is sad and unfortunate. However, that doesn't mean I will forget history and how he tried to lend a hand in destroying our program during those dark years of Steve Lavin.

And as Achilles noted he didn't dump on Olson. If we wanted to we could have been lot more poignant.

I wish Olson luck in his personal life. Hopefully he will get to exit in a graceful manner with his dignity intact.

Pastner is now officially gone....

I mentioned it earlier but UA’s recruiting coach has now officially left to recruit for Memphis. He apparently thought he was getting the job Dunlap just took.
