2013 UCLA Football Fall Practice: Mora's Comments on Malcolm Jones, Defensive Penalties & Replacing Fauria

Here are Jim Mora's comments after morning practice in Day 4:

Mora talked about how the chaos in the practice created by rock music (Led Zeppelin), faster pace and also officials was designed to given the players a real game experience. Guess the practice got sloppy but Mora spinned it as "sometimes ugly is good" because it gives the players a learning experience.

Mora seemed pleased with Malcolm Jones's efforts today. Mora called his performance "impressive" to date and suggested that Malcolm is finally running with his pads level down and with an "angry attitude." Mora is not ready to reward him with a scholarship yet as he is saying that it is there for Malcolm's taking if he can keep his performance up on a consistent basis. It's never too late for Malcolm.

From the AM notes it appears penalties were a big issue today. Mora talked about how the penalties (defensive penalties) were not acceptable. Interestingly he said defensive penalties weren't a big issue last year. Mora said offensively Bruins didn't have any penalties this am, which is a good thing.

The practice according to Mora was intense. There were some skirmishes and Myles Jack and Ben Wysocki were kicked out by the referees. Mora called that learning experience. Hopefully it will sync in with those two and rest of the team how a single player cannot afford to hurt the entire team with stupid penalties by taking cheat shots. Good to get that stuff out of our system now - instead of getting burned by them during game days. One can only hope.

While speaking about replacing Joe Fauria on offense Mora dropped freshman Thomas Duarte's name as a potential key offensive receiver along with Shaq Evans and Devin Fuller.  BTW Mora also threw in the idea of putting Anthony Barr and Cassius Marsh in the offensive mix. I am guessing coaches will be thinking about using those two the same way sometime we had Datone Jones in certain offensive sets last season.
