In a city that celebrates celebrity, Havner is a throwback to the outback. His hometown of Nevada City, Calif., (population: 3,000) is about as culturally far from Westwood as you can get. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, it is a place where kids come up through the junior programs running the ancient Wing T, same as the Nevada Union High Miners.
"We didn't need playbooks (in high school)," said Havner, an offensive lineman growing up. "We knew all the offensive plays."
It is a community bound by its football and its people, there are more residents serving in Iraq than in I-A football. That hit home when former player Adam Strain, 20, was killed by a sniper in August in Iraq.
