(Progress) Report Card for UCLA

Brian Dohn has his report card out for Week 12 of the current football season. Everyone gets a big fat "F" including the defense and the entire coaching staff. Here are Dohns grades after the SC game this year (emphasis mine throughout):

Defensive line

This was the worst unit in an embarrassing game. Forget the 330 yards rushing yards Cal and Washington gained, because this dwarfed it. Somehow, USC's 430 yards rushing, including an 8.4-yard average, seemed worse than the 441 Oklahoma State had last season.

Grade: F

Linebackers

The blitzes didn't work, and Reggie Bush had too much speed to get to the corner before the linebackers could get there. The Bruins took solace in being able to rattle an emotionally unstable Matt Leinart early in the game. Geez, imagine how many points USC could have scored.

Grade: F

Defensive backs

Marcus Cassel made 16 tackles and was all over the place. Unfortunately, each time he reached a ball carrier it was 10 yards downfield. Safeties Dennis Keyes and Jarrad Page talking about how surprised they were with Bush's speed is telling.

Grade: F

Special teams

There was a botched extra point and an onside-kick attempt USC nearly returned for a TD. It also took too long to adjust to USC's pooch kicks, which nearly resulted in a turnover.

Grade: F

Coaching

Three weeks to prepare for the third-worst loss in series history? There is nothing else to say.

Grade: F
Hmmmm. Well let's do a quick blast from the past. This report card looks pretty much identical to Dohn's Week 12 report card on UCLA football after the Wyoming debacle last year:
Defensive line
This unit got pressure on QB Corey Bramlet, but when it came time to pressure him late in the game, the defense couldn't get to him. Yup, the Bruins lost to a team with much less talent.

F

Linebackers

Spencer Havner was missed on a unit that had just four healthy players. Justin London was one of the few Bruins who played hard every play, which is whythe Bruins lost to a team with much less talent.

F

Defensive backs

S Eric McNeal dropped an easy interception, S Ben Emanuel missed some tackles, CB Trey Brown was awful and CB Matt Clark had two crucial pass interferences. Another example why the Bruins lost to a team with much less talent.

F

Special teams

Bragg's muffed punt turned the tide of the game, Justin Medlock missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. The Bruins lost to a team with much less talent.

F

Coaching
The coaching staff repeated it time and again that Wyoming would be ready to play, and play hard. The players never figured it out so the coaching staff also gets blame for UCLA losing to a team with much less talent.

F
Oh well, so much for progress. According to the Morgan Center lackies nothing to worry about here. Let's remember and look back at our season including the yearly ass kicking we took fondly. GO BRUINS.
