[UPDATED] Coach Walker Turns Down The Farm

New, comments

UPDATE (12/15):More good news on this front. OC Register reports today that DG and KD are working hard to keep Walker. -N

Great news from Westwood. Coach Walker says no to Stanford. From Dohn:

UCLA first-year defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker turned down an opportunity to interview for the head coaching position at Stanford, sources said.

Walker is a hot name in coaching after turning around a Bruins defense that was one of the worst in the nation in 2005. His crowning achievement came in UCLA's 13-9 defeat of then-No. 2 USC earlier this month.

Several attempts to contact Walker were unsuccessful.

Walker took over a defense ranked 113th in total defense last season, and saw his defense improve in every major category. Entering the Dec. 27 Emerald Bowl clash with Florida State, UCLA is 33rd in total defense (304.8 ypg), 12th in rushing defense (89.9 ypg), 57th in passing efficiency (122.7 rating) and 27th in scoring defense (17.9 ppg)

Two sources said that by Walker declining an opportunity to interview with Stanford, it demonstrated his commitment to remain at UCLA.
I'd say that was one of the more important "recruitment" notes for the Bruin football program following this year's regular season.

This was a smart move on the part of Coach Walker. If the defense continues to improve and we can combine it with a legit offense (cough*new OC*cough), Dorrell, Walker and co. should be able to put together a 2007 season culminating in a BCS bowl game. Walker's stock will really go through the roof at that point he will have much better offers (which may include being the next head coach of UCLA should Dorrell jump to the NFL after his first complete season in Westwood). Anyways ... this is good news.

Now back to focusing on Florida State.
