Pigskin Notes (Recruiting Weekend)

UPDATE: Well, stand-out wide receiver Drew Davis announced earlier this morning that he was choosing the Ducks over Bruins. Despite Dorrell paying an in-home visit this week to Davis, he went with Belloti?s exciting Ducks offense. Pretty astounding that Dorrell, despite being a NFL ?wide receiver coach,? has only been able to land one stand out WR (Austin) after four years at UCLA. Perhaps the recruits are not all that impressed with his struggling, ineffective WCO, which has only produced one good season (statistically) out of his four years in Westwood. Given the fact that UCLA had only limited scholies to dole out this year (due to the face it has given out lot of rides to ?diamond in the rough? caliber players during KD?s first three years), it is crucial for Dorrell to finish strong this recruiting season, taking advantage of the huge win on December 2, 2006. Reported UCLA has 3 remaining prime targets. They just missed out on the first one. Not good news for Karl Dorrell. Hopefully he can close strong by prying away Warren and Smith from Pom Pom. If he wants to establish himself a credible head coach at UCLA he needs to win these last minute recruiting battles. GO BRUINS. ? N

Brian Dohn has some football notes. While the OC Register reported (linked below) that DG and KD met to discuss upping Walker's K, Dohn reports negotiations are going on for a new K, which will keep Walker in Westwood.

Dohn also has some recruiting notes:

Recruiting corner: UCLA will host about a dozen recruits beginning today during its first major recruiting weekend of the season.

The Bruins will host the seven players who already gave non-binding oral commitments, as well as a few others, including a pair of safeties in Glenn Love (Hamilton High of Chandler, Ariz.) and Chris Conte (Loyola High). In addition, 6-foot-6, 305-pound offensive lineman Mike Harris (Duarte High), who is considered a soft verbal, will visit. Currently, he is a grayshirt commitment, meaning he will enroll in January 2008.

Also, UCLA is awaiting word from Denver Montbello High receiver Drew Davis. He is considering UCLA, Cal, Oregon and Washington, and will announce his decision today.
Keep an eye on subscription sites (BRO and Bruin Blitz) today re. DD. If Bruins get him, pairing him up with Austin, will be significant upgrade (talent wise) at WR. It will be a nice coup for Dorrell's staff.

GO BRUINS.
