Irish Time ...

UCLA-ND talking about restoring a classic college hoops matchup:

The rivalry may return, but Mike Brey has to wait.

He and UCLA coach Ben Howland discussed adding UCLA to Notre Dame's non-conference men's basketball future schedule, but nothing can be worked out yet because the Big East is deciding between a 16- or 18-game conference season.

"I think it is something we would bring back on," Brey said. "Stanford, Cal, those are three in the Pac-10 you think about down the road.

"Ben and I talk, we've talked about doing it again down the road, starting it again."

UCLA associate athletic director Marc Dellins said the Bruins would be interested in restarting the series with the Irish and that there is a slot open on the 2007-08 schedule. Generally, Dellins said, UCLA likes to schedule two marquee home-and-homes, a certified tournament and a neutral-site game at the Wooden Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

"We think the UCLA-Notre Dame series is one of the classic in college basketball," Dellins said. "We would certainly entertain talking in the future."

Ok it's a rivalry only in the eyes of Digger Phelps. Still it would be fun to restore this OOC matchup in hoops.

It would be great national exposure to have these two classic programs going at it every year. I can't get really excited about our football game against the Irish given the coaching staff we have, but no such problem when it comes to UCLA hoops.

GO BRUINS.
