First Impressions

After the first day Dorrell mentioned Terrence Austin, Jake Dean, Chane Moline, Jeremy McGee and Sonny Tevaga as the freshmen who had impressed him. Looks like we have couple of more names to add to that list.

Freshmen CB Al Verner is turning some heads at practice (including KD's). From the Daily Bruin:

He might make the biggest impact this season for a person you have never heard of.

At least that's what UCLA coach Karl Dorrell feels.

That is the impression that freshman cornerback Alterraun Verner has made on his coaches and fellow teammates during the first few days of football training camp.

"Wow, did he make some plays today," Dorrell exclaimed. "He has the ability to be a special player. He can return punts, play corner, and a little wide receiver.

"He can play anywhere we need him."

Verner was a multi-talented athlete at Mayfair High School in Carson, playing on both sides of the ball at receiver and cornerback.
Well we certainly mentioned Verner as one of the players who could break into the defensive back depth chart (with 4 walk-ons).

Also on defense, sounds like red shirt freshmen LB Reggie Carter is making some progress. From the OC Register:
Freshman inside linebacker Reggie Carter, who had some difficulties picking up the defensive schemes last season as a red shirt, is making quick strides in this camp. "He's grasping things pretty well and putting himself in position to make some plays,'' Dorrell said.
This is great news. We need Carter to step up considering the question marks at LB position. And it seems to alleviate some concerns Dohn brought up in our interview with him few weeks ago. We are going to need to these new comers to step it up on D to improve on the forgettable performances of last season.

GO BRUINS.
