Last season, the Bruins won just 27 games all year, but in a mere 34 games this season, they have already topped that number. A 10 inning, 6-3 win over Arizona in yesterday's series opener was UCLA's 28th win of the season, but more importantly, they drew first blood in a massive Pac-10 series against a top 20 team on the road. Now, the Bruins will go for the series win against those same Wildcats in hopes of pushing their overall record to 29-6 and their Pac-10 record to 7-4.
The man who will lead the Bruins out at Jerry Kindall Field is the right-hander Trevor Bauer, who is 5-2 with a 2.65 ERA. Bauer got roughed up last week against Oregon, but the last time he struggled in a start he bounced back with 7.1 shutout innings. Last year against the Wildcats, Bauer threw 5.1 shutout innings of relief to earn the win. In that same game, Arizona's Kyle Simon allowed five runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings of relief to take the loss. Simon will start for the Wildcats tonight and he brings a 6-2 record and 3.39 ERA into the ballgame.
The game gets started at 6 pm PDT tonight and you can follow along with it on GameTracker. You can also stay updated on my UCLA baseball twitter and it looks as if this site will have a free stream of the ballgame for those of you who want to watch. If the Bruins can pull out tonight's game, they'll take this key Pac-10 series and set themselves up well for their gigantic visit from Arizona St. next weekend. Before they can worry about that, though, they need to secure this weekend's series and that begins tonight.
