Bruins 10 game Pac-10 winning streak came to an end with a tough loss in what sounds like a sloppy performance yesterday against Washington State:
The No. 7 UCLA baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 22 Washington State at Jackie Robinson Stadium in the second contest of a three-game Pac-10 series Saturday afternoon. The Bruins (42-13, 17-9) had four hits, each of the solo home run variety, as their 10-game Pac-10 win streak came to an end.
Washington State (34-19, 15-11) scored four two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh to overcome a 4-1 deficit before adding one more run with a solo homer by first baseman Michael Weber in the ninth.
Left-hander Matt Grace (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering one unearned run in one-third of an inning of relief. Right-hander Trevor Bauer struck out eight batters and walked four through 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) and five hits as the Bruins' starting pitcher.
Washington State right-hander Seth Harvey (3-1) earned the victory in relief, tossing 2.2 hitless inning while logging two strikeouts and no walks.
Tough for me to offer any kind of additional analysis since I didn't get to watch any of the game but the 3 errors and 3 unearned runs in the box score really stick out. Seems like they cost the Bruins when they appear to be cruising with a 4-0 lead. Just can't do that against scrappy teams like the Cougars. Those kinds of mental mistakes will also will probably cost us via early exit in the regionals (making all the discussion about seeding about super regional moot).
Still you have to give credit to the Cougars for battling to the very end. They are going to come out with the Lady Mo. on their side this afternoon. Hope the Bruins can respond to the challenge.
The rubber match is set up for today - Senior Day - today at 1 pm PST. Senior Day festivities begin at 12:40. Head out to JR and root the guys on for a proper send off and hopefully a victory before the start of the NCAA tourney.
GO BRUINS.
