With March Madness well in the rear-view mirror, and Football still beyond the horizon, this is the time for the non-revenue sports to gain the attention of Bruins Nation. Some of our Spring season sports have concluded, while others are getting ready for their own postseasons. While Ryan is covering Bruin Baseball in much more detail than I could possibly do here (and better than anyone covering the beat), here is a quick update on our other athletes:
Women's Gymnastics
The Women of UCLA have completed their season on the floor and the beam (Etc.) with a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships, trailing five-time champion Alabama by the final score of 197.375 to Bama's 197.65. Samantha Peszek won the individual NCAA championship on the Balance Beam with a 9.9 score, while Brittani McCullough has been named one of four finalists for the Honda Award, honoring the nation's top collegiate gymnast.
Men's Volleyball
8th ranked UCLA Volleyball has also seen their season come to a close, though not in as favorable terms as the Women above, losing last weekend to #1 USC, at Galen Center in the MPSF Quarterfinals. The Bruins finished 16-15 for the year, with three players receiving all-MPSF honors.
Softball
Last weekend, the 11th ranked Bruins won two games out of a three game series against #9 Washington at Easton Stadium. Friday saw the Bruins win 4-0, behind a one-hitter pitched by Donna Kerr, which the Bruins followed up with a 5-2 victory on Saturday. On Sunday, UCLA fell in 9 innings, by a 4-3 final score. This weekend, the team travels to Berkeley to take on the Golden Bears.
Women's Water Polo:
The Bruins finished their regular season with a pair of home victories in mid-April: A 12-5 victory over #8 LMU, and 9-3 over #9 SDSU on Senior Day. The Bruins finished the regular season tied for 3rd place in the MPSF, drawing the #4 seed in the conference tournament, and a first round matchup with $5 seeded USC on Friday in the San Jose-hosted Tourney.
Women's Golf
The then #1-ranked UCLA Women finished in third-place in the Pac-10 championships, held in Tempe, AZ over the tax-day weekend. Now rated second, the team earned the #1 seed in the NCAA Central regional, to be held in South Bend, Indiana from May 5th through the 7th. In the meantime, five UCLA golfers earned All-Pac-10 honors.
Men's Golf
In their last competition before the Pac-10 championships, UCLA Golf won the Western Intercollegiate tournament, finishing 8 shots ahead of runners-up USC. The tournament, held in Santa Cruz (hosted by San Jose State), was UCLA's 3rd victory of the year. The team will be competing this weekend at the Pac-10 Championships, hosted by Stanford.
Women's Tennis
The 6th ranked women finished their regular season on April 15th with a 5-2 victory at #14 USC. With the regular season over, the team is traveling to Ojai for tomorrow's Pac-10 Championships.
Men's Tennis
The 9th ranked men finished their regular season with a pair of matches last week at the LATC, shutting out Cal Poly on Monday, before losing to #3 USC in the finale last Wednesday. The men will also be making the roadtrip to Ojai for the Pac-10 Championships this weekend.
Women's Rowing
The 17th ranked women traveled east two weeks ago to take part in the VIrginia invitational, held just outside of Charlottesville, Va., where the team fell in separate competitions against #18 Texas, #2 Virginia and #13 Clemson. The Bruins returned to Los Angeles, where they will face off against USC this Saturday in Marina Del Rey.
