UCLA gets ready for their final two weeks of the season with bad news. Tyler Rahmatulla has been suspended for the season with an academic issue so the Bruins will have to go through the rest of the season without him. It is somewhat ironic that this news comes out just before UCLA plays Cal St. Fullerton considering that it was Rahmatulla's home run with the Bruins down to their final out of the season in last year's Super Regionals that got UCLA past the Titans.
The Bruins have played several weeks without Rahmatulla so going on without him is nothing new. Tonight they will try to beat the Titans with freshman Zack Weiss on the mound. The freshman is 5-2 with a 2.55 ERA this year and actually made his first Tuesday start against Fullerton earlier year, giving up three runs in the first inning before bucking down. Since then Weiss had pitched great in a starter's role until he had a rough one in the Bruins' loss to Long Beach St. last week so it will be interesting to see how he responds. Opposite Weiss will be fellow freshman Christian Coronado, who is 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA this season
Fullerton got the better of UCLA earlier this season, edging the Bruins 5-3 at Goodwin Field. Tonight the two teams will square off in Westwood at Jackie Robinson Stadium. First pitch is at 6 pm PDT and you can listen to the game online with John Ramey and Tim Wilhelm. You can also follow along and get all other links and information on my UCLA baseball twitter, while GameTracker also has the game.
