UCLA Football Recruiting: Crenshaw's Mossi Johnson Commits to UCLA

The Bruins are continuing to pick up recruits for next fall's incoming class. Last week, I shared that the UCLA coaches extended a scholarship offer to Crenshaw High's Mossi Johnson. As Scout.com's Brandon Huffman first shared last night, he has accepted Coach Mora's offer to become a Bruin.

GrampaBruin was first to share the news with BN this morning, passing along the Rivals writeup of his commitment (not currently behind their subscription firewall). At first, Mossi had planned to wait until signing day to commit, but after a few days, decided that he did not need to wait, and really did not want to play that game.

I couldn't get any rest," Johnson said. "There was so much on my mind..."

Johnson picked up the phone around 10 p.m. Wednesday and dialed UCLA receivers coach Eric Yarber. He told him he was tired of waiting, tired of not sleeping, and was ready to make his pledge to UCLA.

Currently measuring in at 6'1, and somewhere between 170 and 185 lbs, Mossi really seems to fit the 'athlete' description that the recruiting services love to throw around. Scout rates him as a 3-star WR, while Rivals rates him at 3-stars, and the #77 player in California. Interestingly, in the past week, Rivals switched their rating of him from a safety to wide receiver. ESPN's recruiting arm rates him as a 4-star 'athlete', and the #50 player in California. They posted a scouting report on Mossi this morning (Insider) which reads pretty positively for his future prospects.

UCLA was only the second school to give Mossi a scholarship offer, after UNLV. As noted in the Rivals piece that I shared last week, his potential should lead plenty of other schools to extend offers in the coming weeks, and Coach Yarber and the rest of the staff will need to work to ensure that he stays in the fold. While Yarber has been his primary recruiter, there should be some interest from other Bruin coaches; with his ability to play DB, Coach Martin also has interest in his presence in Westwood. As Mossi told Rivals.com:

"It doesn't matter where they're going to put me," Johnson said. "They said I can be a threat on each side of the ball. That's all that matters."
